Very interesting! The young Dunster was the model for Rudyard Kipling's 'Stalky'. When I was at primary school in the 1950s. I was madly in love 😄 with a girl whose mother was Dunster's daughter (and my 'girlfriend's' father was one of the few successful escapees from Colditz in WW2), but, alas, I didn't get to hear anything about Dunster other than the above.
Kenneth Garland Now,that you have a girlfriend who’s grandfather is one of the allies, now get a central power side chick,we want a new world war. Sorry,if I offended you or her.
wow wow wow! Sounds amazing! Thank you for sharing, in my young ages I was madly in love with stalky himself after reading kipling's book. That really influenced all my live - I know a great deal about Dunsterville, Kipling and Beresford - those two friends from the book and now I'm Kipling's translator in russia (Russian is my native language)
My name is Barren Alley and I'm the poorest man alive. I was trapped inside the Dumpsterforce, and when I got out the war was still going on. I am the Foch.
I had thought that Orwell was exaggerating when he satirized this in Animal Farm by writing that the animals never really learned anything about Animalism, but holy cow he really wasn’t.
If the British paid the Cossack loyalist force for combat operations did that not make them mercenaries? I remember that the question about the use of mercenaries came up once in the Chair ov Wisdom.
Great episode ! As a Middle-Easterner I learned from this special episode that the (not so) great famines were much more spread in the Middle-East than I previously thought it only hit Syria and Lebanon...
Finally an episode about the Persian front! Thanks Indy and crew. I hope you can one day make a special episode about the Persian front in general. Oh, and merry Christmas.
Anytime Indy covers the history of this region I get confused. I am forced to watch the episode a few times. That's not a problem, but this region and the names are so new to me. Great show! I happy to be a patreon supporter.
I was really surprised by this. Knew nothing about Dunsterforce, Iran being on the verge of communism or this choatic state of the Caucasus front at this stage of the war. WWI keeps surprising. So glad you guys are here to show me interesting, obscure and important stuff like this
*bowing with his hat off and waving it* BLOODY BRILLIANT!!! Just the Christmas Episode! HUGE THANKS, Indy, Flo and the Team! Merry belated Christmas and happy New Year!
I appreciate this great video it was so interesting to me since I am from northern Iran(city of Rasht province of Gilan) that Koochek khan movement took place there, I rely enjoyed.
These British officers must have been real daredevils, wouldn`t even think of driving around these parts of the world in a tank. Happy Xmas from Scandinavia.
Merry Christmas to everyone that watches this channel as well as the creators of this amazing channel. Its Christmas yet The war is still on, maybe next year? Fingers crossed.
In addition to all the Situations that you listed, there are the Unfamiliar Names Situation and the Lost in Central Asian Geography Situation. Interesting but very confusing, will have to watch again. Thanks and have a great New Year.
Yeah, I'll sure mention that to the countrysides that Washington's army plundered for supplies and did so frequently enough that there was almost a separate uprising against them, not to mention the intended Army coup in 1783 over bad conditions, lack of pay, and pensions that were promised (the Newburgh Conspiracy).
Well yeah when one army guy plunders a goat or two to eat from the countryside farmer .sure it got them annoyed but nowhere near as bad as the socialist revolutions who would take more than a goat.
Great eprode, Indy. Why don't you do one on the Indian Expeditionary force A on the Western Front in 1914-1915? Indians effectively held 1/3ed of the British line during this time, while the British trained the Kitchener armies. If you want to pursue this, please contact me
Would be nice to have a video on the war years in Persia, I know there was the Out of the Trenches one, but it seems the situation was a lot more complicated than mentioned there. And the resources online for this topic aren't great... even though the historic implications of Russian/British meddling in the Constitutional Revolution from 1911 and during and after WW1 form the start of a series of events that culminated in the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the deep rooted fears of Western interference that characterizes Iranian politics to this day.
One of the reasons that they had so many NCOs with their armoured cars was that this was largely manned by the remains of the RNAS armoured car squadron that had been formed in Belgium in 1914, and then sent over to Russia. The Royal Navy automatically promoted all of the men of their armoured car squadron to Petty Officer because they had all joined with the knowledge of how to run and repair a car, which was considered a skilled trade.
The doodads on Indy's desk keep changing position from week to week. I see that what appears to be a new rock, well probably not a new rock since most rocks are very old but I digress. A rock of undetermined age has been added to the accruments that usually reside on said desk. Hmmm, what does it all mean???
@TheGreatWar will you guys be doing specials are the political and fighting action of the Russian Civil War and the adventures of the Czech Legions pre and post 1918?
Lovely episode as always The Great War. Flo, I dono if you're in the comments but uh, Merry Christmas to you and the team. :D Can't wait for the shocking conclusion in 2018.
Edward J. Lemon (2015) "Dunsterforce or Dunsterfarce? Re-evaluating the British mission to Baku, 1918," First World War Studies, vol. 6, no. 2, pp. 133-149.
The war kept going despite the treaties and what the papers and text say. The damn commies, socialists, Marxists, and Bolsheviks, and many splinter groups kept fighting all around the world. There was even that mass intervention in Russia to try to stop the Red armies which didn’t accomplish much.
Guys, your episode about the snipers recently surpassed the mark of 1.000.000 views. Is this a first time for you? Anyway, congratulations for another landmark.
This story sounds like it would make one heck of a movie!
I had NEVER heard of this little campaign. Thank you, once again, for revealing yet another arcane aspect of the Great War.
Ladies and gentlemen, we can say from today that this war will be over by next Christmas, and it will be true!
Lol finally
V. Athanasiou you're so brave to make such a prognostication!
;-)
But the Versailles Treaty was not signed until June of 1919. So technicially the war was not over only a cease fire
I heard that year ago,we won't get fooled again.
Yeah that's what they told us in '14 too. Keep on dreaming.
This part of the war is the most interesting to me I think, all the intrigue and revolution going on in that area of the world made it very volatile
It is the least known part of ww1, too.

At first I heard Dumpsterforce.
Yaldabaoth Dumpsterforce sounds like a hobo special forces unit.
My name is Barren Alley and I'm the poorest man alive. I was trapped inside the Dumpsterforce, and when I got out the war was still going on. I am the Foch.
I was told the war would be over by Christmas.
Merry Christmas Indy, Flo and crew.
Little Jenny Well it's 3 years late
When ever someone says that the war will be over by Christmas, remember to ask them to be more specific as to which one.
No there’s kaiserslacht the last german operation
That's where I failed. ;)
It wasn't really over until Christmas 1945. There was a 20 year armistice between The Great War part 1 and The Great War part 2.
"The Adventures of Dunsterforce" sounds like a bad Chevy Chase movie.
Isn't 'bad' assumed when it's a Chevy Chase movie?
Don't give Chevy Chase ideas!
True, Great actor Chevy Chase
4:26 that Russian soldier may have been uneducated but he was a long way from poorly spoken. I'd go so far as to call his statement eloquent.
being conscious of the fact you do not know things is the first step to in educating yourself
Kerry L More important is the self-awareness itself.
True they were uneducated, but they loved to sicuss things and smarted themselves through conversations
The surprising level wisdom in his words from someone completely illiterate was probably exactly why it was recorded down.
I had thought that Orwell was exaggerating when he satirized this in Animal Farm by writing that the animals never really learned anything about Animalism, but holy cow he really wasn’t.
Merry Christmas! Time to go home right? Right?
This is getting out of hand
Just give me 48 hours and some Calvary

Tbh this would make a great little adventure movie. Thank you to Indy and all you at the Great War for sharing this obscure story.
Probably for a mini series for how complicated it is.
I'd really like to see Indy appearing in the RUclips rewind. Kinda gives the history buffs of youtube some representation...
Merry Christmas, watch The Great War everybody
This would make an amazing TV series. The story of Dunsterforce, I mean.

Merry Christmas to my very favourite channel on RUclips, that I have been an ardent of since 2014!
I appreciate this great video it was so interesting to me since I am from northern Iran(city of Rasht province of Gilan) that Koochek khan movement took place there, I rely enjoyed.
You are one great storyteller. Merry Christmas indy and team!
These British officers must have been real daredevils, wouldn`t even think of driving around these parts of the world in a tank. Happy Xmas from Scandinavia.
Merry Christmas to you as well Mein Freund! It's almost a Year Later!
"No, no, no spoilers, you'll just have to check it out for yourself" That was pretty funny, I actually laughed out loud in front of my monitor!
They were a very stealthy army hush hush :3
Out of all of the fantastic names that have arisen from this war, Dunsterforce is definitely the best.
Merry Christmas, Indy and crew.
Please make a video about non Turkish conscripts in Ottoman Army during the Great War
This sounds like a thrilling story for a movie.
How about creating special about Central Asia? Fantastic show. Keep up a great work! :)
lel polel yes
Merry Christmas to everyone that watches this channel as well as the creators of this amazing channel. Its Christmas yet The war is still on, maybe next year? Fingers crossed.

This is a bit like another Lawrence of Arabia
Lionel of Persia
I've finally caught up with this series and now I'm going to have to wait for the episodes to be released... Well, damn it. What a Chrimbo.
Merry Christmas entire Great War team!
7:15 The truth about all revolutions
*Orange Kayak*
That is absolutely true.
All *socialist revolutions
The American revolution was individualist sacrifice
Yeah, I'll sure mention that to the countrysides that Washington's army plundered for supplies and did so frequently enough that there was almost a separate uprising against them, not to mention the intended Army coup in 1783 over bad conditions, lack of pay, and pensions that were promised (the Newburgh Conspiracy).
Well yeah when one army guy plunders a goat or two to eat from the countryside farmer .sure it got them annoyed but nowhere near as bad as the socialist revolutions who would take more than a goat.
It takes a lot more than a goat or two to feed an Army for 8 years
What a situation...
Great christamas gift! Thank you guys

Hold on...
Is this not the last Christmas special?
Jona Willekens rip
Jona Willekens yes
Is it? Is it not? Who can say?
Qazvin, so many tales to be told from the land between the seas
Merry Christmas to you all!

The resources offline aren't great either. At least in English.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Great video! Would have appreciated more detail about which Dominions the Dunsterforce troops came from (since I'm Canadian).
Happy New Year to all.
That's an amazing story
I'm going to need to watch this one a few times, I think
I heard "Dumpster Force" - Not a name that evokes fear in the enemy!
so I am not the only one then:)
@@exploatores no you are not

Ward Vermassen I hope so.
Edward J. Lemon (2015) "Dunsterforce or Dunsterfarce? Re-evaluating the British mission to Baku, 1918," First World War Studies, vol. 6, no. 2, pp. 133-149.
Im confused now, i will read about this, as the story looks awesome.
Merry Christmas
i learn something new again
Pt. 2?
Looking forward to it!
Yaay you made a episode biased in iran!! Also merry Christmas!
Fake information! The war ended in Christmas of 1914
(Edit: I hate to be that guy, but holy Von Hötzendorf I've never gotten this many likes before)
Merci my friend

Love Indie’s voice
This all sounds like quite the situation...
Dumpster Force, raiding trash dumpsters and dustbins from London all the way to Bagdad.
I was totally confused, can you please show their progress on map as well?
Guys, your episode about the snipers recently surpassed the mark of 1.000.000 views. Is this a first time for you? Anyway, congratulations for another landmark.
Is it bad I read Dunsterforce as dragonforce?
I read it as Dunderforce.
It doesn't even have a 'g'!
TheAlmightyToaster
Yes
Dumpsterforce
TheAlmightyToaster you mean like the gaming brand?
Awesome Christmas special, when will part to be posted
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas TO
