Víkingur Ólafsson - Debussy: La fille aux cheveux de lin, Preludes Op.1, No.8

- The prelude's central idea takes after its title - a girl with golden hair, which in the fine art symbolizes innocence and naivety. This voyage of musical discovery introduced Ólafsson to the immaculate blend of “freedom and discipline” in Debussy’s piano writing. “As extraordinary innovators of both harmony and form, with a unique ear for colour and a keen sense of the theatrical, both composers, Debussy and Rameau, wrote music which engages more senses than just the hearing”, he observes. “And both enjoyed giving their compositions titles that stimulate the imagination - the music itself ranging from the purely programmatic to the entirely abstract. As in previous albums, however, I have left the music itself guide me, rather than a fixed ideology.” Watch pianist Víkingur Ólafsson (“Artist of the Year” at the Gramophone Awards 2019) perform Debussy's 'La fille aux cheveux de lin'.

Debussy's inspiration for the piece was a poem by the same name by Leconte de Lisle. Do you think there is a connection between the poem and the piano piece?
They are imageable. Readers and audiences might imagine themselves in front of the impressionist paintings like Auguste Renoir's. More than 'beautiful,' the performance pictures a girl with warmth, smile and peace.
No.
@@Sam-zj6mw hmm.
As it can be read on the video's description the music engages more senses than just the hearing.
Was just jokingly replying to the marketing-speak rhetorical question...
Thank you
I remember now why Debussy is one of my favorite composers. Absolutely stunning
One of the greatest pianists alive. I like his Debussy even more than his Bach. Good taste, no mannerisms or romanticisms, no jumping up and down on the piano bench and making silly grimaces like so many other pianists do. There's the "clarté française" Debussy (and Ravel) wanted to.
In my opinion the best Debussy since Michelangeli.
Entspannung pur. Dankeschön für diese schöne Musik ❤
Quite an original interpretation. I liked it.
the prelude was inspired by images from the childhood of the composer and the nostalgia to the time of innocence and simplicity.the metaphoric implication of the soft-silky flaxen hair aimed to depicting how love could be in a world lacking obstacles and barriers.hence the music came in such an easy flow of chords .
I used your comment for description on my video for this piece
Very interesting. If you search for the poet Charles-Marie Leconte de Lisle, you'll find a poem by him titled "La fille aux cheveux de lin".
Can you please share your source of information so I can read more about Debussy and this piece?
Yes it is based on that exact poem mentioned
Oh, Víkingur. Is there anything you cannot play to perfection?! Your music calms and soothes the soul. Bravissimo! 🎉❤
OMG so beautiful! With his characteristic stillness, super sensitive tone and the surreal, impressionistic lighting (which I think was a distraction for performers but he seemed ok for that), I was totally immersed in this incredible two-and-a-half-minute fantasy!
All I can discern is a deep rivers of gentle flowing waters to trickle away the pain, suffering and sorrow we are all experiencing in this world!👑👍🌹❤️👌
My favorite playing of this piece! Beautiful.
Extraordinarily beautiful !! 👏👏👏
Execução primorosa, impecável leitura de Debussy.
This familiar great masterpiece he plays with exquisite skill and breathtaking technique is comfortable and soothing to the ears and the mind

Omg his tone! So beautiful 💕
The lighting was a little bit distracting to me though... 💧
thanks
now I am jealous of you :(
Beautiful ❤️
Thank you! 😊
This music feels like watching people spending time on the promenade in autumn. Dunno why. It's beautiful tho.
So lovely! Ólafsson has a deeply touching sensitivity.
This video made my Sunday bright!
Cheers from Brazil!
Perfect
Très bien la musique!!!
Maravilhoso, obrigada
so delicate introduction...
His wonderful performance is felt the scent of Debussy‘s aesthetics
He holds an unchallenged position as s an interpreter of Debussy
J'aime cette pièce de six bémoles depuis ma jeunesse.
Gorgeous
Maravilloso♥️
So good played.
Ein schönes stück das er spielt
I love you
Apart from his amazing talent he doesn't resemble a refugee from a boy-band as so many of these young male pianists and singers do.
I wish he had taken more time on some places, it felt a bit rushed. I am also a fan of the left pedal wich did seem like it could have been used at some points in this piece to make it milder
if you didn't know Debussy was an impressionist era composer. In the impressionist era the art wasn't limited to music, famous artists such as Calude Monet, Edgar Degas and others. If you look at these paintings you might see something in this video that I did too. The camera angles and lights make it look like he is being painted in an impressionist style. Truly incredible.
In my own mind, Impressionism is not the thing (the subject). It is the impression of that thing.
@@brucekuehn4031 I am eager to hear more. What is this, impressioning if that’s the right word
the interpretation was somewhat histerical, but it's obvious the interpreter has put effort into it so im sure many people will like it
cool
Impressive!

Great playing! I just uploaded this piece too :)
Ich wusste gar nicht, dass es sich bei den Préludes von Debussy um sein Opus 1 handelt. Wie werden dann seine früheren Werke bezeichnet?
👏🎉👏🎉
I will save Astarion from his master, and Karlach from the hells! This I swear on my oath!
great performance though that pair of glasses is adorably distracting!
He has his own style, like Friedrich Gulda had and Yuja Wang has....and that's good!
Very nice performance but the lightning in this video made me feel so dizzy.
No pierxx
music was good but MV was eww
Debussy is so original that he is impossible to be influenced by him. Personnaly ,I don't like his music . I am too easily lost . His music is confusing.
Fine musicianship, but the video is promotional, not artistic, tantamount to distasteful.
This isn't good.
I think most of us would disagree.
@@emaych2 Because it IS good, maybe the best Debussy since Michelangeli.
Great interpretation. I hate this yellow label videos
I love Vikingur's Bach, but I don't think he is creating the luminosity of Debussy here.
I agree. He plays Debussy like Bach, he can't get any color out of the notes.
Which pianist do you have in mind that creates this luminosity?
Víkingur plays Debussy as if he were German.
@@victoriathorlacius874 i think Vikingur would really appreciate this comment, as long as he stated he wished to be German😂
@@vessiealdakou2292 I meant he plays Debussy as if Debussy was a German composer. But I guess it works both ways. My sentence wasn’t very clear, English is not my first, or second, language.
