Largely very good interpretations, but I do think his No. 15 is a little too fast and showy for what the piece actually is, although still a technical marvel. I may just be jealous, though.
I've been practicing the Glass Piano Etudes for a couple months now, and while No. 5 is probably the simplest (and slowest) from a purely structural point of view, it really requires a deft ear and hand to bring out the full emotional resonance of this piece. Some of the "harder" etudes are actually easier to make sound good once you get the technical nitty-gritty out of the way, but with this one, there is complete transparency between performer and listener since the music is just so direct. I applaud this performance, especially the restraint to keep the tempo so rubato. I find the inclination to speed up a little over time hard to resist.
I totally agree. The trick in this piece, is too bring out the emotion in this etude. Technical skills aren't too challenging, pulling out the mood of the piece is the hard part.
However controversial he may be, I love Glass. He reveals sublime beauty in the most simple structures and harmonies. His music is delicate, and exposing. I'm a fan.
Simple structures and harmonies too but very difficult to find and to compose with simple structures. Very difficult to keep them together to make sense to make a figure yet he miraculously does it. I find this great in Glass....great genius.
I don’t have words, just enjoylistening Vikingur. I stared with his Ave Maria. There are no many deep piano players like him. I’m a ballet dancer, but love classical music soooo much. I ‘m an individual who feels and love his play.
Beautifully played. Incredible control with such a light touch. The piano sounds amazing too. The random people walking by outside oblivious to the delicate piano happening just inside that huge room is pretty surreal.
At first this video popped up, I was like, who is this guy, bad composure playing the piano sticking his neck out, he is out to get himself some spinal pain in the neck, and what is wrong with the music, why is it so slow and not changing, but as soon as his right hand hit the fist note, suddenly I was dragged into this psychedelic outta space, or feeling stuck in time or something, I found myself kept listening after several minutes, and obsessively searching for Philip Glass in the next few days, and buying his etude book, and begging to play his piece, and sharing his Video. That is what a thoughtful stable as-if digitally composed multi-tracked music which fully displacing acoustic music instrument’s flavor can do to modern listeners .
All'altezza del maestro

why do you keep calling this sad? it's not sad, it's calm and relaxing, everytime i hear this i just imagine myself in the bottom of a cold lake, just lying there thinking and so on, and then i listen to another really great composition (which i suggest by the way, and hope you enjoy): Shostakovich - Piano Concerto No. 2: II. Andante, and that makes my day.
This reminds me of the opening to a Quantic Dream title (Heavy Rain, Detroit: Become Human), and all of the depth of sadness that you're about to embark on. The stark simplicity and resonance between pauses and the last key played, that just brings this - melancholy to the track, that really makes it feel grounded and depressing in a grey-skied world. I love it though. It *really speaks to me.

A quiet place, to think about all the darkness and terrors in the world - forgotten - in solitude, yearning for a deeper meaning to it all, wishing for this life to be snuffed out or renewed with hitherto unbequeathed purpose.
Glass finds harmonies, sometimes even in just intervals, that seem hidden from access to the average mortal. Then he assembles them in metrical scaffolding that might be called non-Euclidean. It's about as "Road Not Taken" as possible from the would-be ascendant to the throne: dodecaphonic composition. (That king died before his gluteus could maximus.)
Nice. Contrary to what we might think, those Glass works are somehow difficult to interpret for there is only music in them. And the difficulty dwells in creating the right ambience. So good job.
How do you like the Glass album which Víkingur Ólafsson released on DG?
Deutsche Grammophon beautiful interpretations, the original shines in a new light
A superb performance by Vikingur. Also a striking visual capture and background, is so apropos for this musical piece.
Solo a me sembra una porcata pazzesca?

@Konstantin Ridaya Well said! I was a bit reluctant at Philip Glass's work at first, but I've changed my mind.

Just bought the score. The video shows a lot of the pedal work, which should help.
Right. The pauses in the music mean everything. possibly his greatest sonata to date.

Really?
He's part of the canon now, specially his operas, perhaps the most important composer alive today.
Yup

Glass' music springs to life in the hands of Vikingur Olafsson, far more so than when the composer himself plays it. This is beautiful!

True. Olafsson plays with more drama than Philip Glass itself.
True. Glass is not a particularly accomplished pianist, from what I've heard. (That's not an insult.)
