I did the same thing to mine accept. I glued mine to the inside of the silicone case and it works great and you don't have to look at it on the outside

I cut off a sock cuff and wrap around the bottom of my GoPro with it to cover the mics. It works great.

What a great easy thing to do.... I tried the deadcat stuff, but those don't work well at all. This looks and sounds much better
I copied this, but found that superglue didn’t stick to the silicone case very well. The foam fell off while riding my bike. I fixed this by sewing the foam on with a needle and thread. Now it works great!
When I did this I wasn't sure if the foam would stick to the case either, certain materials are difficult to glue. Did you use a good super glue? The foam on my neoprene case is still sticking to it to this day
@@bavarianbynature yes, it was a high quality superglue I can’t remember the name off hand but it’s generally good stuff. Honestly though sewing it on works great so I thought I’d leave a comment for anyone who’s thinking of trying this or having trouble with getting it to stick.
Glad I bought the 2 pack…lol,just in case I screw up the first one. I was using the foam from a set of old headphones for my GoPro 11 and cut them to size,taped them on with electrical tape. The foam wasn’t thick enough,but it did make a difference. I just ordered the windscreen today. Gonna give this a go 👍

this is genius! I love the use of the silicon sleeve the most about this idea, as I've stuck deadcats directly to my gopro and as other have said, they don't work particularly well... and when they do finally stick they're very hard to get off when it's time to replace them. I'm going to give the foam a go instead of the deadcat too, your test was very impressive.
Thanks. The idea came to me as I was hiking in the woods thinking about how unhappy I was with the wind noise :D Now 2 years later I am still using the same camera, same silicone sleeve and same foam piece that I made in this video. It really works great!

I tried out the full foam cover before it was cut up when I was driving about 40mph (64kmh) and it was on the GoPro 7 and it worked pretty good but the faster you go the nosier it gets. I am sure there are videos out there that demonstrate it.
i've had my dirtbikes license plate attached with velcro for like 10,000 hard offroad kms + plenty of highway in between. if it can hold a license plate it'll hold a bit of foam on lol.

Great idea! Though, why a silicon case should be used? Not sure about that but it might be enough to get an appropriate foam case and cut the hole there
I had a foam case for my old gopro and I found it much more cumbersome to use. It also makes the camera larger and from what I have heard foam cases don't last very long

Problem with this is the neoprene cover holds the heat and contributes to overheating. As a matter of fact - overheating with the neoprene cover is guaranteed.

your idea is great. I'll be using a sock or black colored instead of foam .. and I'll be using in on the inner side of the camera so that it doesnt look bad on the outside. I wouldn't want to carry such weird looking setup in my classroom or at the uni hehehe.
Hi, thanks for commenting. Before I made the video I checked the manual and it was showing only 2 microphones. If there are 3 I must have covered them all because I have zero wind noise and I am extremely happy with the outcome. So you want to use a neoprene sleeve and on the inside of it cover the microphone openings with a thin layer of cloth? That sounds like a great idea. I would be interested to know how that works out
@@bavarianbynature Thanks for letting me know .I just checked again .. yeah there are 2 microphones.. I must have seen it wrong.I'll be covering the inside with a thick towel like cloth.. And I will make a video about just like you did... hopwfully it'll work too

@@bavarianbynature front, bottom under one of the mounting fingers, and apparently those 2 holes on the left side of the gopro affect mic recording loudness so they might be the 3rd mic. keep in mind if the gopro is in 'wind' mode apparently it only uses 1 mic. not sure which.
In the GoPro Hero 8 manual, in the beginning of the manual (right after the contents section), it shows the different parts of the camera and only calls out 2 microphones - one in front, under the lens, and one on the left side, below the mode button. Both are numbered "9" in the diagram for the camera. Note that there's a speaker in the bottom of the camera, numbered "12" in the diagram. But in the second to last page (in the tech specs:ProTune section), it does say there are 3 microphones - "Your HERO8 Black uses three microphones to capture sound while recording video. You can customize how they’re used based on conditions where you’re shooting and the type of sound you want in your finished video."
I am going to try this on my motorcycle handlebar mount for my GoPro Hero 7 Black. It overheats and I'm sure being in cased in black foam doesn't help.

No issues like that. The foam stays cooler than the camera housing

anyone here tried drilling holes in their case and doing the same foam mod to the case? i'm wondering if its worth it. the wind noise is pretty bad with a case already on there covering the holes, not sure if its worth drilling them and making it louder/worse.
If I were to use double stick tape instead of SuperGlue, should I cover the mic holes with the tape or cut around it?
I would keep the mic holes open. I hope it works out for you. I still have the same setup as shown in the video and it works great
why dont you just put the windslayer on instead of cutting it and put on the silicon case? curious.
legit question. Installing the windslayer is a pain and it feels like it can tear and eventually will. And you have to remove it every time you need to change the battery or memory card.

@@LyonJerry I don't know if you watched the full video. There is a cutout in the silicone case to access the battery compartment. I never take my silicone case off unless I use the camera under water
@@bavarianbynature Yes I watched. What I meant is that you can do the same thing with windslayer. You can cut those part so you dont have to take the windslayer out? I'm just curious if why you didnt use the windslayer, is it performance issue? and doing like your way is better than just the windslayer? I honestly grateful for this video because I'm currently only using the windslayer but the noise is still coming in even tho not a lot so I want to get an idea if this way is better or not making much difference :)
@@LyonJerry Yes you can. The wind noise would probably be the same. I guess it comes down to personal preference. I never cared for the windslayer, it makes the camera more bulky and you have to be more careful with it. My gopro would also not fit in my small camera case with it. I think if you cut the windslayer open to access the battery compartment it will probably fall apart after removing it from the camera a few times (like when you want to remove it for under water use). At the time I made the video the windslayer I had didn't even allow you to see the front screen but they have different ones now.

BTW..that front little grill is the speaker..it's not a mic - And I just realized the GoPro8 has its charging USB C plug inside the battery door.. that SUCKS.. You can't film while you're wired up for power.. My Go Pro5 and Go Pro 7 both have the USB C plug apart from the battery door.. and I film the whole day with a plugged in Go Pro.. - why would they do that???? So much for upgrading!
Actually the front grille is one of two microphones on the GoPro Hero 8 (the second microphone is on the left side, below the mode button). The speaker is on the bottom of the camera, under one of the mounting fingers. This info is from the user manual. You can confirm it too by blocking the grille in the bottom while playing back a video on the GoPro (you'll see the playback sound is muffled when you cover the grille on the bottom of the camera)
GoPro sells a replacement door + 4-foot USB-C charging cable that you can use to charge the camera while recording

Sooo... Buy two things & make it yourself instead of just buying the Mod?
I had the Media Mod. The sound quality of the internal mic is better (there are many other videos about it). Mod doesn't come with a windscreen. So if you only want the media mod for the microphone I wouldn't recommend it.
