Hey Jared. Excellent comparison between the windslayer and the dead cats. You’re the only video I found that compare the two products. I’m a fan of the dead cats but was considering the windslayer. Not anymore!
Thank you for the feedback 🙏🏻 I’m always looking for ways to make my GoPro footage better. The dead cats are the best sound, but they are also to expensive and Not easy to remove and reinstall if you ever need to do that (water sports, media mod etc.) I’m currently working on a new wind noise device, which I’ve been testing and creating myself.
In this case the dead cats where 100% better. But like you said the wind slayer was still way better than nothing. I have found some quality differences in the “wind slayer” products. Some have had significantly denser foam and seemed to work mush better. While others have been thinner and more flimsy.
Thanks for the feedback man. I was wondering about different windslayer foam density. For now I’m using dead cats, but I might try a different windslayer brand. Any suggestions?
Awaiting my first GoPro to be delivered (Hero 11). Knew that wind noise was #1 complaint, but also know that overheating was a strong 2nd. Windslayer seems like a poor choice as it would retain a lot of heat and prevent any (minimal) windflow the gopro has inherently in the first place. So, my choice was to order 'mini'-deadcats designed for lapel mics. My idea will be to use gaff tape to outline the microphone holes in the gopro body, then use a permanent craft adhesive (NOT crazy glue) to glue the cats to the tape. This will create the strong bond of the deadcats to the tape, but still be able to remove them if needed by peeling the tape off of the camera body.
Excellent video Jared - and thanks for your hard work to create a good solid comparison. Here in Australia, it gets hot... a lot... and Windslayers are generally considered inferior to dead cats because they overheat the GoPro in no time. Yes, dead cats can be a pain, but overall (and as your video showed) they're the best choice for wind reduction. Biking is of course different to hiking, rafting or 4x4 camping in the amount of air flow generated across the camera when in use, but for me, dead cats do a decent job - at least until GoPro comes up with a better alternative to their less-than-ideal digital reduction! Cheers, Remote River Man

Excellent review! Thanks for the effort, really appreciate it. I'm wondering if the deadcats will stick on going +120 mph on the track? I'm currently using the windslayer secured with a rubber band around the gopro.
Idk 🤷🏼♂️ one of my complaints with deadcats is they falling off. I think if you used some extra glue, but you’d want to make sure you don’t ruin the GoPro 😬
Thank you! I’ve since made a new version of this video reviewing the Top 4 wind noise reduction devices. I’m currently using the media mod with Rode GO II mic.

@Dave Munsie in my experience you really need the top, front and side covered for mountain biking. When wind hits from different angles it will cause that horrible wind noise 😬
@@JaredHoff I use them for bicycle touring, on tarmac, on descents, and on gravel roads as well. I've had a GoPro HERO 6 Black for years and use the GP adapter and a pop-mic for my MotoVlog and it works great! I have another channel for regular vlogging (on foot) and I tried using the HERO 6 with the adapter and a RODE shotgun mic and it was horrible. All sorts of popping and the audio was so bad I couldn't use half the footage. I've been wanting a GP HERO 9, but now I'm concerned what type of audio setup I should use for regular vlogging. I'm hoping the HERO 9 is FAR better than the HERO 6 for that function. I'm thinking I could use the Windslayer for normal vlogging with the HERO 9 since I'll just be walking around. Have you vlogged (not riding a bike) with the HERO 9 and tested? Like talking to other people to see what they sound like? All I want is to be able to walk around and talk to other people where the audio will pick up me and the other person without using adapters and external mics. That would be IDEAL. :)
The Hero 9 with media mod will be good for that because you can select front mic or back mic depending on what side of the camera is pointing at you. I’ve never vlogged, BUT I used that filming style holding the camera sometimes in my videos. Only downside is the media mod takes more battery.
@@JaredHoff I'm just worried if I'm filming a person in front of me would my voice be too faint having the mic in the front position. Can you have both front and rear mics enabled? If not I may have to research a solution. Thanks man!

Would using both cut all wind noise and protect the dead cats during storage? It's overkill for sure, but if it provides the cleanest audio and works... but maybe it would muffle and distort the othe audio? Just thinking out loud 🤔

@@JaredHoff that's gd I'll have a look because I'm needing a good one for being outside of a vehicle recording races etc.....and now that you say dead cats were the better option as you can hear.....they will come off at over 150mph surely 😂😂😂

Thank you for all your efforts to make this video. I stumbled across your channel while searching for a video that could help me fix the wind issue I have been experiencing for quite a while. I usually use a windslayer but I have not tried dead cats yet. My only issue with a windslayer is that my camera overheats when I film for over 5 minutes in hot weather conditions. Most of my videos are walk-and-talk videos. So here is my question for you... Based on your experience, which one causes more overheating issues (windslayer or dead cats)?
Deadcats cause no overheating, or at least I’ve never experienced it with them. I use deadcats on my Hero 11 mini and Rode Wireless Mic on my GoPro Hero 9
Just ordered the wind slayer have been sticking on the dead cats type all last year and worked great. But this year I had trouble didn’t notice a corner came lose so I had wind noice in my video 😡 then I replaced them but the stickies came lose again and had a ton of wind noice hopefully this will solve my problem
The windslayer isn’t quit as good as the deadcats, but you won’t have to worry about those stickies coming loose. I’ve also noticed that the windslayer will get loose overtime and start to let more wind noise in. But it’s a cheap option. I’m always testing wind noise reduction devices, and in my most recent video I tried out the media mod and rode wireless GO II microphone. It’s expensive, but works so good.
@@JaredHoff I really wanted the media mod when I got my camera but all my videos are canoeing with water splashing on the camera and possibly the camera going in the water. The media mod was not water prof I don’t think. Even lost my GoPro max in the river that sucked
The foam windslayer will increase the chances of overheating. I’ve never had it overheat with dead cats. Both work fine in the rain and mud, but not submerged in water.

Why not combine both? Clue the dead cat on the inner side of the slayer. Maybe you have to found out on which length the dead cat has to be cutten down. Or clue the dead cat on the gopro and use the salyer additional.
"dead cats" were best, but maybe the windslayer is good enough. It shouldn't be surprising. Professional camera work is done with a foam pad (like the windslayer) indoors to avoid the puff of a "P", but they add a dead cat layer when outside to get rid of as much wind noise as possible.

But surely with the dead cats you’d have to unpeeled them if u wanted to put something like a floaty case on it. And they’d loose the stickiness after doing this repeatedly. I just think the windslayer is a better option for the average person that isn’t using there GoPro for professional use.
Totally hear you man! I think the windslayer is much easier to use and take on and off. I’m always searching for the best possible sound quality on my videos and have been using the deadcats a lot.
@@JayhooOutdoors no media mod is not water proof unfortunately
My gp9 hero black overheats if it's like, 65 degrees or more out.
will either of these increase overheating?
And, how do they work when wet?
The foam windslayer will increase the chances of overheating. I’ve never had it overheat with dead cats.
Both work fine in the rain and mud, but not submerged in water.
Best comparison ever !!!!!
Thanks a lot for your help.
Deag cats 🐈 for me 💪👍
Thank you! I recently made some more comparison vids, and I’m currently using the Media Mod with Rode Wireless GO II. It’s an expensive setup though 😬
Why dont you use both? Can you try it out? The cats doesn't get on the way like that and the sound is still good maybe?
I did try that. The GoPro overheats 😬 I’m currently using the windslayer only, and it works good enough.
@@JaredHoff alright 😁 gonna try the windslayer

Does the wind slayer induce any extra heat build up?
Yes, but my GoPro has always worked with it on.
Why was there a significant video quality difference between the dead cat on and dead cat off ?
🤔 I’ll have to watch it again closer. I didn’t notice that. Im not using dead cats anymore. I’m using a different windslayer now by HSU.
I was wondering if a velcro can be stick to the go pro and the other side to the dead cat so that we can remove the deadcat when doing water activities or something
. hmmm Please make a video for this
I’ll look into that. I’m a bit behind on videos right now, so it may take me a bit to get it out in my channel. Thank you for the feedback 🤙🏻
Why not combine both? Clue the dead cat on the inner side of the slayer. Maybe you have to found out on which length the dead cat has to be cutten down.
Or clue the dead cat on the gopro and use the salyer additional.
👍🏻 I’ve tried doing this but it just didn’t work as good as I thought it would.
Nice vid. Just made a video and it was ruined by to much wind noise. Thanks for the review. Subbed
Thank you 🙏🏻
Next video, dead cats plus wind slayer!! Lol
I tried that. It overheats the GoPro 😬
Lately I’ve been using the Rode Wireless GO II microphone on my GoPro and it provides by far the best audio quality. I’ve made some videos on that as well in case you’re interested.

Thanks for the awesome comment 👍🏻
Does the camera heat up with the windslayer?
Yes, but when you use it for mountain biking it doesn’t get too hot.
Você não pára de falar um segundo brother.
Do you use sir built in mic of gopro hero9
For this test I was using the internal mic, but I’ve done videos recently where I used the Rode Go Wireless II and the sound is amazing.
How about some deadcats on the windslayer?
I tried that but didn’t work as good as I thought. I made another video that talks about that and more wind noise reduction stuff that I’ve tested. Check it out if you want:

I really appreciate your efforts here..awesome..!!
Thank you! Much appreciated. I also recently did a GoPro audio test using the media mod and Rode Wireless Go II. Always trying to get the best out of this GoPro 👍🏻
Thank you for the feedback 🤙🏻
Check Seth's channel for the dollar store fake fur dead cat option with haircut. Great video, super helpful
Definitely will. It’s crazy paying $19 for these, but dead cats make the audio sound so much better.
How do dead cats hold up to water?
Honestly, I’m not using dead cats anymore. I’m now using the HSU Windslayer. It’s much easier to use, and it removes easy if you want to go in the water. Checkout the website below and use the promo code👍🏻

Sorry I just skimmed through the comments, but how about wind slayer over the dead cats?
I’m planning on doing another video soon. I she been using windslayer more lately. They are so much more convenient to take off and put back on.
They should make a windsalyer for tha max so I could capture 360 audio so I ordered some of those dead cats
The deadcats work great. Just a little bit of a hassle because they fall of at times and you have to buy new ones.
I’ve come up with some better ways to stick them on to my GoPro and will be making a video about that soon.
Why don't you put the windslayer over the deadcats? Wouldn't it be the best of both worlds?
Add that same exact thought and tried that however it overheats when riding during the summer, which is mainly the time that I’m writing my mountain bike and making a lot of these videos
@@JaredHoff Oh I see! Thanks man now I know that's a no-go for me too 😁
Double up the windslayer!!
I talk a little bit about that in my latest windslayer versus video. It overheats the GoPro when you double up 😂 but seriously 😳
Tall mother 29
Why don't you combine it?
I’ve tried that and it overheats when foam is over dead cats, and it doesn’t make a difference when deadcats are stuck on top of foam windslayer

Dude youre talking sooo much
I hear ya bro! I'm always looking to improve. Thanks for the feedback.
@@JaredHoff Didn't mean it as an offense! Thanks for your video
It's good he did so we can hear voice quality with the different combinations!
