The big problem I had with the windslayer and other foam-style covers is they will cause the gopro to overheat way faster. Maybe this is not a problem for bikers; I use my gopros for fishing.
It definitely helps to cool it off when you’re riding a bike. Since making this video, I’ve been using the Media Mod with Rode Wireless GO II a lot. The sound quality is amazing! I think it would work really good for fishing, but it’s not a cheap setup 😬
@@HookinDinks Rycote Micro Windjammers or something like them. Little "dead cat" mic covers attached with a circular sticker. Really cheap and does a great job. Just look up the schematic of your GoPro and make sure to put one over every mic hole

True 👍🏻 It’s also very lightweight. I’ve noticed the heavier I make the GoPro,,, the more I have to worry about it shaking around on the chest mount. It definitely effect footage at times when you have the media mod and wireless mic 😬
Great test thank you! I was thinking the media mod with the back mic on was probably the best quality. The windslayer let the most wind noise through of the hardware methods. The wind mode On wasn't nearly as bad as I had guessed it would be. The dead cats sounded very good also. The Rode Go2 sounded great but the price is hard to justify.
I was really surprised how good the media mod sounded by itself 👍🏻 Since making this video I’m mostly using the Rode Wireless GO II, but it’s kind of a pain to set it all up sometimes.
From what I hear from the tests, the wind slayer is the one that gets the most wind noise (except with nothing on the camera plus no noise reduction)… and the rode 2 sounds the best for sure.
Great video...I think the built in noise reduction is by far the best and it costs nothing I can live with the quality of audio when having the wind reduction on. Top video very informative 👌
Thank you for the thorough breakdown! I do canoe trips and need to maintain waterproofness and avoid overheating. I am going to try the deadcats for the summer trips and the windslayer for winter.
The wind slayer is awesome, but it acts like a blanket. Not an issue in the winter, but in the summer the GoPro likes to overheat regardless, so adding the wind slayer drastically reduces film time before the camera overheats and shuts off. On a hot summer day I usually get about 15 minutes of film time before it shuts off when wearing the wind slayer. Media mod is the same issue, but it does last 3x as long before turning off. Dead cats are a pain to put on but at least the camera stays on. So I’m left considering replacing my GoPros with DJI for being able to use external mics without a media mod. I built my channel with GoPro for 3.5 years but I’m tired of dealing with it since I live in a very windy region.
@@AdventuresMadeFromScratch main issue with external mics is the battery 🪫 required. You’ll go through your GoPro battery a lot faster so just need to keep extra batteries on hand.
I prefer the dead cats, and I think your video proves there superior sound quality. I use dead cats on my own Hero 9, but also admit that they are a pain in the ass and the need to keep verifying that they remain tightly sealed to the camera. I use the lens mod and have learned not to change the lens out unless absolutely necessary. Thanks for a good comparison!!
Glad to have helped. I’m my new GoPro, I glued the deadcats to the adhesive foam ring. Then stuck that to the camera. Hard to explain, but it works great.
thank you for such an outstanding job of doing head-to-head comparisons. After watching, and re-watching and rewinding your video multiple times I think that the GoPro built-in wind reduction is by far the best and easiest of all of them. by the way, that boy of yours is quite the ham, and he would be a great sidekick in your videos😊😊😊
Honestly the digital wind reduction did better than I thought. Especially is you are purely recording for the video and will be adding music later anyway and want some sound from the experience mixed with background music. Thank you bro 🤙🏻 I’m hoping this video helps some people. I was surprised how good the media mod and Rode Wireless GO II sounded 😯 but still such and expensive option.
I personally think the rode wireless and media mod for my motorcyle and I don't have a problem with the extra cost but the battery life will be like what, 1 hour?. My set up now I can plug my GP into an external battery for about 8 hours and I don't think I'd be able to do that with the Media Mod. I'm not sure what would be the best for long tours on the motorcycle. I enjoyed your videa
Thanks for the reviews! I use my GoPro 8 when I'm sailing, so you can imagine wind is a major issue! I'm definitely getting the Media mod...maybe the Rode wireless also!
Thanks for the video very informative, I use a different type of dead cats and I’ll trim the adhesive and the cats so they just cover the microphone ports and are not as intrusive. That way I can swap lenses very easily and the only time I really need to swap out the cats is when I take it in the water.
Sounds like, Wind Mode "On" is pretty satisfying. As a motorcyclist here, I am using my Gopro by turning off all the sounds and on my left chest pocket I carry a Zoom H4N aound recorder with a deadcat on it. Later on, I sync the sound and the video footage.
When you mentioned creating a product I immediately thought: "What about a case, similar to the media mod, sealed and windproof, with dead cats permanently attached?" You could easily take it off if you need to get the gopro wet, and the dead cats can also be easily replaceable for when they wear out or get damaged.
Windslayer ended up being useless for fishing. Gopro hero 13 overheated in 45 mins and it was just on 4k30 with no hypersmooth or gps. The mediamod was not as bad as I expected. I have 2 of them and never used the onboard mics because when testing, it sounded bad.

Appreciate the video - I don't currently own a GoPro so I can't test this strategy. It looks like the GoPro has 3 mics. Any way to access each of these as audio channels (when you export the recording does GoPro make each of these channels accessible?). You can stick a dead cat on the two mics that don't inhibit interacting with the lens and in post you can mute the front mic (the one without the dead cat) or lower the gain on this one to your liking to compensate for any wind noise. Would that strategy work/is it feasible? Or do we lose too much input audio but removing/reducing an entire channel
Unfortunately it doesn’t let you control the mics independently. The best technique I’ve found is in the RUclips video I created. The ONE Trick That Eliminates GoPro Wind Noise Forever! ruclips.net/video/hReHhFrxevc/видео.html
Nice video, I have a couple of questions. Did you test the media mod with front facing mic? Does the media mod drain the battery faster only when using the rode mic or does it drain faster even without a mic plugged in?
I test d it using the rear facing mic. The media mod drains the battery a little faster, and when you add the Rode mic it drains the battery about 2x as fast 😬 but I think it’s worth it for the awesome audio quality 🤷🏼♂️
Nice tests. Thank you for sharing! After see your video, for me it’s quite obvious that externe mic has the best quality. That’s why its super expensive 😂 Anyway maybe windslayer suits perfect for what i want
@@JaredHoff I imagined. Thanks for the tip! Another concern with de windslayer is about water. Do you know how''s it going? I mean if the windslayer get wet i lost it?
Great effort and comparison mate, you changed my mind from using dead cats to windslayer. I have one question....i intend to use gopro with windslayer on chest mount for motorcycle ride...do you think i will have reasonable audio (talking) without using Media mod or any external mic...thank you...brilliant video...keep it up 👍
Since filming this video, I’ve been using the media mod with rode wireless GO II. This is the absolute best audio setup, but it drains the battery 🪫. Windslayer will get good results most of the time. However, sometimes when you go around turns and the wind hits the windslayer at different angles it will create wind noise. Windslayer is still the easiest to use, but I’m always trying different things.
Great video, thanks for the info. I'm ordering the Windslayer. I only paid $ 300 for my new GoPro Hero 10, from GoPro. I won't pay more than that for noise reduction!
I am looking to record the sounds of nature around me while hiking, but need to cut back on the wind noise. I'm leaning media mod, but it's not cheap. What would you recommend for my needs?
Media mod also drains battery 🪫 but media mod definitely captures better audio. Rode wireless mic with media mod is also good, BUT you’ll want to carry extra batteries with you. Maybe even get the enduro battery.
What model GoPro do you have? I’m used to seeing Wind mode Auto, On and Off. I always keep the wind mode set to off since I use wind noise reduction devices like deadcats and such.
Hey guys. I have a 7 hero black that i just started using as a dashcam. It has a horrible overheating problem so i just purchased a fender bolt mount that im gonna use on my sunroof visor for easy access and ventilation. My question is does the windslayer block out ventilation as well as wind noise? I dont want to purchase something that will defeat tje purpose of placing it outside in the first place
Yes! It definitely blocks out ventilation. When the GoPro is being used out side of the car, like the way I use it on my mountain bike, it’s no issue. But I’ve had it standing still, on a tripod, in the hot sun, and it started overheating with the windslayer on.
where can we buy the dead cats? those specific ones with the proprietary 3M adhesive. (that's what makes them expensive) ... I want to use them with the DJI pocket 3. which is about 4 pinhole microphones around the whole camera. and these dead cats you can cut them you can shape them etc. -anyway great video. I've believe you said in the video that you would leave the links down below for these products. now I can find all the other products on my own but I just cannot find these adhesive dead cats.
Looking at windslayer options, I wonder if it's possible to use one for the gopro 5/6/7 that doesn't have the cutout for the front screen, which I won't be using when I'm on the bike anyway, and seems like it would catch a lot of wind. Likewise for the button cutouts, I really don't need them, would rather they be covered with continuous foam. I won't be using this in a very hot environment.
@@JaredHoff sorry what I meant was I'm using a Hero 10 black, but I don't need the front screen, so I would love to have a windslayer that doesn't have a front cutout for the screen.
Definitely too expensive 😞 I just got the Hero 11 mini for mountain bike. No media mod for that, so I’m back to searching for wind noise reduction for the mini
1:20 avoid Rycote lavalier mic dead cats, the fur falls off fast and the glue is not that great. I tried it, not great.I've also tried a wind slayer but the one I tried was by Donguan Pangnlu Technology Ltd, it tore too easily, too fast. cut was not good. I've also tried furniture pads, some work great, but you have to find pads with proper adhesive, not something that falls off easily.
Thanks for the input 👍🏻 I have a new technique for dead cats where I super glue the fur to the adhesive foam pad, then stick that to the GoPro. It’s been working good.
@@virtualcitytours oh man! Sorry to hear that. I’m currently using the Rode Wireless GO II and been really happy with that. But not sure if that would cause even more heat because it’s using extra power for the media mod and witless mic 🤔
gopro has only 2 microphones the one on the front and the small one next to the capture button the port where the cap is situated is for water drainage after using the camera underwater without any housing so the mics wont capture muffled sound
@@JaredHoff yes ruclips.net/video/SIIAxncG7NI/видео.html Trust me, it is way cheaper than what you have in the video. Besides, if you have a fleet of GoPro the dead cat adds up quickly. One Santa hat you can easily cover 10 gopro. The Santa hat fabric looks very similar to the amazon dead cat beside the fact that it is white/red
@@JaredHoff What do you mean What I mean ? there is no wind block, sock, foam ,screen ,cover, shield, cover, pop filter that fits the Gopro Media mod besides the stock one , are u being serious you don't understand?
Sorry to hear that you keep losing those. Make sure to get the HSU ones if you decide to buy more. They are definitely the best. Although, I’m pretty happy with how the Media Mod and Rode Wireless GO II sounded 🤔 just so expensive 😬
What would you recommend me that will give me if not the same but as near as iPhone audio quality on my Hero 8 & 11? ruclips.net/video/Zu8Doi2AtA4/видео.html < This is the type of content I create which I basically place the GoPro on the plane’s window with the suction cup. I want better audio but of course I need wind noise control with the muff or dead cats/furr. I thought about buying external multi directional mics like the Rodes or lavalier mic that could give me a similar audio quality like the iPhone but I read a lot of reviews and comments that the GoPro sometimes will not receive the audio or the mics simply stop working mid recording or even the audio not being synced. Another option I’m considering is not buying any mic and just turn off the GPs wind noise reduction setting and stick small wind muffs or foams on the built in mics, and now that I’ve seen your video I’m tempted to this option😅

I’m working on a video now that talks specifically about the media mod with rode wireless go ii
Great video, thanks for the info. I'm ordering the Windslayer. I only paid $ 300 for my new GoPro Hero 10, from GoPro. I won't pay more than that for noise reduction!
Glad to have helped. I’m still using the Rode Wireless Mic and loving that, but definitely expensive 😬
Thanks for the Video! Can anyone explain difference between Non Stereo Audio on and off mode? Is one higher quality when on?
Media mod sounded the best!
👍
where can we buy the dead cats? those specific ones with the proprietary 3M adhesive.
The ones in this link are the one I currently use. They come with the “deadcat” and the adhesive pieces.

@@JaredHoff thank you. so helpful!!
It gets tricky with those older models, but I’m sure they make something for them because they are still good action cameras.
@@JaredHoff sorry what I meant was I'm using a Hero 10 black, but I don't need the front screen, so I would love to have a windslayer that doesn't have a front cutout for the screen.
I have read the windslayer really heats up the go pro causing premature shutdowns, have you experienced this?
Yes, but not when I’m moving fast mountain biking.
Does the windslayer prevent GPS lock?
I don’t think so, but I don’t really use that feature.
Why does the rode wireless thing need the mediamod? There's not a usb to audiojack adapter?
It connects to the microphone audio port on the media mod. I wish it worked without it. GoPro needs to make a wireless mic.
@@JaredHoff thanks, it for sure wouldn't work with the gopro 3.5mm mic adapter dongle thing?
Where’s the link to the wind slayer?
Media mood and road ii is the best .🌹✌️
💯 percent! That’s what I’ve been using ever since doing this test. But it’s definitely not cheap 😬
🔥vid
Thank you 👍 that means a lot
great effort
Thank you 🤙🏻
Windslayer does really well
It does, but I’m back to using deadcats for my mountain bike rides. Not as convenient, but I think the sound quality is better
@@JaredHoff very interesting point
Usiing media mod and using rear mic settup is better to all this. but the media mod price soo expensive lol.
Perfect
Thanks 👍
Hard work...👍
Thank you 🤙🏻
What about overheating in that foam case?
It definitely makes it hotter, but I never had it over heat
@@JaredHoff I have overheat issues even without it)
@@virtualcitytours oh man! Sorry to hear that. I’m currently using the Rode Wireless GO II and been really happy with that. But not sure if that would cause even more heat because it’s using extra power for the media mod and witless mic 🤔
gopro has only 2 microphones
the one on the front and the small one next to the capture button
the port where the cap is situated is for water drainage after using the camera underwater without any housing so the mics wont capture muffled sound
If you don’t cover all three it gets bad wind noise when mountain biking.
Not shipping to Canada?
Which one are you looking for? Should be able to get from Amazon.
amzn.to/3OhdZxA
Windslayer. HSU contacted me and guided me for ordering. Thanks
Your iPhone model?
I think that was when I had my iPhone 12 Pro
Built-in noise reduction was the best option, and no extra cost. Voice quality was not bad with it. I don't think the HSU Windslayer did a good job.
Got to do what’s right for you 👍
After watching this I think I stick with my Santa Clause hat at dollar store and Scotch®4011C double sided tape from 3M. 🙂
That sounds like a great budget option. Did you make a RUclips video on that?
@@JaredHoff yes ruclips.net/video/SIIAxncG7NI/видео.html
Trust me, it is way cheaper than what you have in the video. Besides, if you have a fleet of GoPro the dead cat adds up quickly. One Santa hat you can easily cover 10 gopro. The Santa hat fabric looks very similar to the amazon dead cat beside the fact that it is white/red
best video.
Thank you 🙏🏻
The problem is with the media mod NOTHING is available if you lost the original foam wind sock.
What do you mean? Not sure if I understand what you’re saying.
@@JaredHoff What do you mean What I mean ? there is no wind block, sock, foam ,screen ,cover, shield, cover, pop filter that fits the Gopro Media mod besides the stock one , are u being serious you don't understand?
The media mod was the best
For sure! It’s just the heaviest 😬 which can be bad for mountain biking using a chest mount
@@JaredHoff that may be so but if you care about sound quality it's a winner
18:27 i mean, just use those regular thin double sided tape and cut out the size you need.
Heck yeah! Probably works just as good and cheaper price 👍🏻
Wind noise is white noise. And it's relaxing.
We aren’t talking about a cool breeze. Going full speed on a bike creates horrible sounding wind noise.
bro the different windslayers are the same exact thing, but I understand that you gotta promote HSU
They fit the GoPro different. But HSU is the best foam Windslayer I’ve found so far.
Different density foam will affect the quality of the audio too. Cheap windslayers will usually have low density foam so won’t work as well
@@some_doofus word!
@@JaredHoff alright I’ll be waiting for a comparison video on cheap wind slayer with good reviews vs HSU wind slayer
I keep loosing mine. I used wind slayer but for some reason I always loose them.
Sorry to hear that you keep losing those. Make sure to get the HSU ones if you decide to buy more. They are definitely the best. Although, I’m pretty happy with how the Media Mod and Rode Wireless GO II sounded 🤔 just so expensive 😬
The wind slayer makes the camera warm up and the lense then steams up.
Oh no! I’ve never had that issue. Try using dead cats, or RODE WIRELESS GO II
No Windslayer for gopro 8, so I will have to make it))))
There’s the hero 8 media mod.
amzn.to/3tGqknr
Then you just choose “rear mic” and it will reduce the wind noise coming from the front 🤔
Camera manufacturers should insert the dead cats into the camera! INSIDE!
Sick
This one was a little long, but I thought it was good info.
I take that back the wireless mic was the best lol
😂 Wireless Mic with media mod
15:20 dude check your brakes your wheel isn't turning :D
I think the ride wireless go II with a lave mic would be best. amzn.to/3XIWjBj
@@JaredHoff Now that Prime deals are up I could check them out, yet, my biggest worry is the GoPro might sometimes not receive the audio or the mics simply stop working mid recording or even the audio not being synced as I read out there. Do you know anything about this?
15:25 Nice front tyre xD
This video has chapters, so you can skip back and forth to watch one section at a time.
Tell your Dad Wim I said sup.
Wind slayer for us cheap ppl lol
I hear ya 👍
