For something labelled as 'entry level' the Olympus EM 10 mark ii really is a feature packed camera, but does it hold up in 2023?

Some of the best photos I’ve seen on Flickr were taken with e-m10s. I think the people who buy these aren’t full of themselves or over educated with RUclips photography drivel. It’s my belief they lean on the camera and just push the shutter button without over thinking. After forty years of snobbery and making things more difficult and suffering for some delusion of photographic purity, I’ve rediscovered P mode and I’m loving it.

I started photography with the E-M10 mark II and can confirm that I click the shutter with very little thought as I walk around. I have better cameras now but this is still my walk around camera probably until I break it, I guess.. 😅

This video was a game changer for me. I have a Nikon D750 and several lenses - much too heavy to lug around on hikes through the woods. This video prompted me to do more investigation on the e-m10 and in a week I had purchased a mark ii from eBay. I love this camera! I love micro four thirds so much that I just bought an e-m5 mark iii. My photography has improved dramatically simply because this camera is so light and fun to shoot with that I have it with me all the time and shoot much more! No more dreading the idea of lugging my heavy full frame camera and lenses around - which I seldom did. Thank you for this video and the path it took me on.

I have the mk3 and love it, small, good quality, does everything I need it to do and probably a ton more than my basic skill set needs. Keep a medium zoom lense on and for quick point and shoot my Phone does a good job for everything else when it's not around.

I switched to m43 a couple of years back and got a GH5 as I did more video than photography. I got interested in trying out some street photography and bought an old EM10 mk i for less than £100 which takes good images. I wish I'd got the mk ii to be honest which I could have got for around £150. Currently looking for a used EM10 mk iii or an EM5 mk ii ( I like fully flippy screens too). EM5 also weatherproofed which helps here as when it rains it really rains. Enjoying your videos since I recently found your channel. Tykes rule OK! 😉😉

One of the biggest advantages of MFT is the quality of the cheap, tiny lenses. An OM10 with three primes is a lovely bit of kit. Also I really like the built in vintage filter effects.

I no longer want the neck ache of larger cameras and gave all my old gear to a nephew while in the UK last summer . All I have left is a Nikon FM2 A and 50mm 1.8. I cannot use it because of my eyesight failing , but love the design of the camera and won’t let it go .
Today I use a em10 Mkii and have a couple primes and a kit zoom I rarely use since I got a 30 and 60 mm 2.8 Sigmas for walk about and portraits .
The camera is perfect and sits nicely in a Billingham digital bag that keeps it dry and protected from knocks .
At a push , I can get all the gear in the bag if I wanted to - but don’t .
It is a lovely camera and those who view the images I print each year in my photo books just love the pictures . This is equally true of photographers who use pro gear , which speaks volumes about picture quality .
Finally , I also shoot a lot on a iPhone and if you know how to see a great image and have basic processing skills , then use Snapseed and you will have a collection of work in no time that will do you proud .
It is not the gear but the person taking the picture that counts .
I am not interested in video , so turned off flip screens and won’t use those great number of cameras that do have them - very sad .
There it is . If I had not chosen the em10 Mkii then I my next option was the Fuji XT 20. It is a great camera , but the em10 Mkii is so much better to use for my style of photography. Back in the film days I used 5x4 alongside 35mm. Yes, I studied photography on the way to running a law department , being an academic and a few other things in a varied career before retiring .

I think your rant around 5:00 is really about the people who have bought into the consumer mindset that "this is good because they said so, and this is bad" and people who actually go out and shoot for the enjoyment of photography learn that things are not as social media and advertising has made them seem. I have an a7iii but am very excited to get my first lens for my first Olympus omd em10. I want to take cool walk around shots and doing that on my a7iii is cumbersome.

The OM10 mark 111 was bought new this week Tue Apl 4 2023. If only I’d known about this camera a few years back when it first came out. There is only one word to describe it…SENSATIONAL! I’m an artist and use photography to adapt the shots I take into water colour paintings or oil paintings. This camera is absolutely amazing. I don’t care what else there is out there to buy in way of cameras because this one 😊ticks every box I’ve ever wanted to tick…..it is truly an artist’s dream machine.
It’s beautifully put together and the menu system is easy to understand with automatic point and shoot if you’re in a hurry with loads of built in options for all kinds of situations. On the other hand it is also a camera that can be set up using the menu’s for the creative photographer who wants to go a bit further than point and shoot…..that’s me! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF KIT
NOTE: The supplied 14-42mm lens is equal to a 28 to 84mm on an SLR camera. Plenty of lens and reach for nice general portrait stuff, landscape, and people shots that most people need.
I wasn’t looking for the best lens, or the best camera. I was looking for something that compliments my work as an artist, so stumbling apron this wonderful machine made my day…….and I haven’t taken any photos yet…..I only got it today!
p.s. ‘love it to the zoom and back’.

I got one bundled with a 14-42EZ pancake zoom last fall, had been looking for the lens for a reasonable price for a while and paid about £110 for the lens and body, along with the message that the cameras back screen was not lighting up when flat. Quick look on the net and it is a known fault with the screens cabling. Anyhow, took delivery of the package and was seriously smitten by the camera. The fault is there, the screen needs a bit of jiggling to work, but hey-ho deduct the price of the lens and I am possibly out about a tenner on the camera. Ended up getting another body for about £100 which was fully functional and have explored the other oldies with a OG E-M5 and E-M1, all of those are great value for money even now. The one E-M I wouldn't buy now, is the OG E-M10, it is seriously lowered specced than rest of the line-up.

Jokingly I've been using my original GF1 and I'm amazed at the rendering and output of it. Specifically the jpegs are all very film like and no longer feel the need for fujifilm. It really put my actual needs into perspective for me and now I'm looking at cameras like the em10ii. Also, it's a personal preference but tilty screen all the way. You'll notice Fujifilm uses them a lot and it really resonates with photographers. The FAS on everything mentality came from YT Vloggers and I feel like its ruined a lot of cameras for me. In a perfect world models would come with an option for either, or have the video oriented bodies FAS, and photo specific tilty.

Yes, ISO 3200 has lots of noise - but when using the right settings for noise reduction in post (I always go RAW), this noise does look quite natural and unobtrusive! As an old film shooter I would say: Embrace it! Your cons sum it up quite nicely. Hi David,
Don't worry about or bother mentioning noise. The reason I say that is Ivor Rackham over at fstoppers has started a series of articles using several manufacturers cameras and using several third party software providers for RAW converters Lightroom classic, DXO etc. The first conclusion is that some software produces noise and even artifacts whereas others don't with the same RAW file, but it varies depending on the software/camera mix. He hasn't yet thrown the manufacturers own RAW converters into the articles, but it looks like decades of camera reviewers conclusions may have been skewed depending on which third party software they use in their post processing workflow.
So when a camera reviewer states noisy iso performance the caveat that should go with it is, with x brand third party software. The same may be true of colour science but he's not got that far yet..
And no, it's not all to do with sensor size, in some cases, just the third party software being optimised, or sub optimised, for one or other of the camera manufacturers RAW file formats.

    • @c.augustin
      @c.augustin Год назад +1

This is spot on, noise performance is highly dependent on software and settings! I got aware of this when I compared high-ISO JPEGs out of an E-PM2 to RAW conversions, and found that the in-camera noise reduction does a marvelous job, producing noise that resembles film grain (I like it!). Modern "AI" based noise reduction software might be the best, but I found that tweaking my settings in Adobe Camera Raw does the trick and works good enough for me; I could use Olympus Workspace (or however it is called now) if I want similar results to the OOC JPEGs, but it's not worth the bother.

Camera settings are situational. This is why putting settings on the images isn’t always helpful.
When you’re shooting in manual mode, you’re responsible for every element of exposure and while the settings on my images worked in my situation, if your lighting wasn’t the same, the settings must change too.
An easy way to get comfortable with manual exposure is to pay attention to either the light meter (-3-0-+3) or even better, the histogram. Using the light meter try and get it close to 0 for a balanced exposure of the scene or using the histogram, make sure you aren’t hard right or hard left. Hope that helps 🖖

I'm a canon user and I've always liked the Olympics. What doesn't work for me at all are the Sonys 6... I don't like the feel, the software.

I’ve owned the a6000 and a6300 and they produce great images, but I have to say I much prefer the Olympus. I love my Canon ff too but for street, the Olympus is awesome 🖖

what lens works best with this camera for street photography?

My personal favourite is the 45mm f1.8, but depending on your style of shooting you might prefer a 17mm or 20mm. It all comes down to how you like to shoot and there is no right/wrong or best/worst lens really 🖖

@@scoffs8919 a good way to figure out what kind of focal lengths you like to shoot at is to use a regular kit zoom like a 14-42mm that will possibly come with the camera and see where in that range you shoot most👍

It's about the art, not the camera.

The camera is a big help though, hard to take pictures without it 🖖
