Swan Lake was Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky's first score for ballet. Its 1877 premiere was poorly received, but it has since become one of the most loved of all ballets. The twinned role of the radiant White Swan and the scheming, duplicitous Black Swan tests the full range of a ballerina's powers, particularly in the two great pas de deux of Acts II and III. Other highlights include the charming Dance of the Little Swans performed by a moonlit lake and sweeping ballroom waltzes in the splendour of the royal palace.
Anthony Dowell's glorious interpretation uses classical choreography created by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa for the ballet's revised 1895 version. Dramatic costumes emphasize the contrast between human and spirit worlds, while glowing lanterns, shimmering fabrics and designs inspired by the work of Peter Carl Fabergé create a magical setting. That is fascinating! The start of a new partnership. They are so suited to eachother, Matthew Golding and Natalia. Perfect pairing. The corps is also fascinating, so disciplined, so unified. I love the way Natalia sees her role as a fragile flower, needing protection.
Swan Lake is my favorite show!! :D
I LOVE that Natalia says she's much more of a fragile flower than a magnificent queen. She knows the role, I love it!! :D
Its not a show its Ballet :-)
ArkanTheClean 👍
he says it. she is being spontaneous. and that makes a great artist , makes her more than just a great dancer. ( which she is) i never saw her before and just saw a giselle. wow. it is like the 80s when i saw makarova or kirkland. a real classical ballerina. wow i am now a huge fan
Natalia and Matthew... my gawd. Absolutely breathtaking
Matthew is my cousin and he's what made me take up ballet, he's so graceful and inspiring!
she says her partnership is new. she knows he is a great dancer and now she wants to know his soul. what a very insightful thing to say in approaching dance
Their productions are superb - Natalia Osipova is always amazing to watch and the corps de ballet are beautiful.
Thank you for showing so many Osipova clips lately. I love her dancing. Even during rehearshal, you can see so much emotion displayed for the role. She is absolutely wonderful. And these rehearsal clips are so helpful to know how each detail gets corrected before it goes on stage.
Yes, she is, unfortunately she speaks only Russian
I wish we had seen more of them together.... I love this version of Swan Lake, even with the skirts.
Natalia Osipova and Francesca Hayward are so lovely. Thank you for posting this - it was wonderful to watch.
Saw this last night my local theater!! Absolutely stunning performance!!!
BEAUTIFUL, BREATHTAKING, BLOWN AWAY!!!!!!!!
That girl can dance!!!!!
I watched this as a live screening last night. I was utterly entranced at the thistledown lightness of the whole ballet. It was my first ever ballet and we are now hooked.
I am really impressed with both of them. She has great technique and energy in her dancing and he is very powerful.
wonderful broadcast yesterday (seen in a cinema in hamburg).... saw natalia osipova before as giselle, again she was perfect (and she was not the only one)... thanks a lot for this evening...!
Natalia is so beautiful!!!!!
just beautiful, this new partnership is full of promise, 😊
I live in tulsa and i finally went and saw this ballet for the first time and I loved it
"Matthew being the size he is.. is also powerful"
Sorry I can't help but laugh a bit, no offence to anyone 😂
What’s so funny?
@@daphnesplinter2842 it's been 5 years.... I've forgotten what this is about
This is very insightful and fascinating to see and know from the inside. The almost superhuman efforts required from everyone involved are very impressive, even dazzling. Brava and bravo to all!
The pianist😍
lovely
NATALIAAAA❤️
💜👍

Please gather up all those knee-length swan tutus, seal them in a vault guarded by four rottweillers, and throw away the key.
I know, right - they look like those garbage bags that you cut into strips and attach them to the top.
+Aves Raggiana I agree that the corps the ballet costumes aren't the best, but think of it this way - the weird fringe-like tutus are supposed to represent the feathers
+Aves Raggiana I think they look beautiful on stage. they float like clouds :)
Aves Raggiana what? No! I love those skirts, it sets the corps away from Odette and Oile visually. The pancake tutus make them more noticeable.
whats the name of the pianist?
The pianist for the Principal rehearsal is Colin J. Scott www.roh.org.uk/people/colin-j-scott, at the time a Jette Parker Young Artist for the Royal Opera House.
What is up with Matthew! He looks like Brad Pitt OMG!
I really loathe the RB tutus for the swans. They look like recycled carrier bags.
Thankfully they changed them! Now you can actually see their beautiful legs' movement.
@@eurekamreum5458I am very glad to hear that!
H🤠wdY!
Be confused as to why Jonathon cope is a coach on acting - His acting was poor for most productions during his performance time as a lot of roles he only got due to being tall enough to partner Bussell !!!
Does not Natalia speak english?
Natalia Osipova does speak English, but she prefers to give interviews in her native Russian.
Is it me, or does it seem like she's lost a lot of weight recently?
Swan tutus are... weird. Really, really weird. Not in a good way.

Dislike the black swans in the corps de ballet. Like a keyboard. Black swans are rare in nature; just one or two in a small population. Moreover, the eye is diverted around in a way that the all-white ensemble does not cause. Odile's entrée in the story should be visually strikingly; seeing black swans previously hurts this effect. You'd think Royal Ballet would have realized this? Has this something to do with a misplaced nod to some idea about racial sensitivity? It reminds me of ABT's 'Firebird' production with a corps of red firebirds. Ridiculous. Thus by the time the real firebird appeared the magic of her entrée was ruined. A red bird in the forest? We've got 'em in droves!
I believe the black swans in the corps de ballet appear in the 4th Act, hence after we are introduced to Odile. To my knowledge, in this production all swans in Act 2 are white and in Act 4 there are some black swans.
Ah! Thanks for this correction. I should have realized that the swans had managed during Act 3 to recruit some new black swan membership to replace various AWOL white swans---which is still odd. Some other YT clips here of this production seem to have an all-white 4th act, but I could be wrong too! my other aesthetic points still hold. I just read that in original Russian iterations there were mixed black/white corps, but I still prefer the all-white tradition. Start reading about the growth/tradition of SL and your mind gets twisted in knots. It's really complicated about what SL 'is'.
2 !mrdunn brucvald: Come on! It's not about biology, it's a fairytale and a comprehensive metaphore of what's going on and who is who.
i dont really like it when the ballerinas facial expressions are too much. i think it takes away from the attention of the dance
Swan costumes are horrid.
It seems like see grass, not the swans. Poor Natalia, she has to put up with all of this...
