    Giselle is the quintessential Romantic ballet. It transformed the dance world when it was first performed in Paris in 1841 and remains at the centre of the classical repertory. Peter Wright's production for The Royal Ballet, which had its premiere in 1985, has had more than 550 performances. With its combination of memorable story and exquisite choreography, Giselle is the perfect way to discover classical ballet.

    I finds these type of clips sooo informative. I have saw Giselle over 50 times by my beloved RB,but I had no idea that the willis arm placement at times is meant to signify the holding of children they never had or as they stand at the side of the stage they are on the looking for ant unsuspecting man to kill , Bravo to the RB for these type of clips , I look forward to seeing more of this type of feature

    • @RomyMacias
      @RomyMacias 4 года назад +10

      Yes! David, in our ballet company, we were also told to hold our arms like that because if you were to lie on your back it's how arms and hands are placed on the dead... so much symbolism!!! And having danced in the corp, I can tell you, I had to hold my tears in every time we performed Giselle.

    • @tsochengkimo
      @tsochengkimo 3 года назад +4

      @@RomyMacias That's so moving. It must be a wonderful experience to be part of Giselle but also difficult to face both technical and emotional challenges on stage at the same time. That reminds me of the RB performance with Osipova as Giselle. Funny enough the saddest moment for me was actually at the curtain call because it was clear that Natalia wasn't able to come back from the deep sorrow when the audience were already cheering. That was heartbreaking.

    the girls say that they think the corps de ballet is really important, I would suggest that the corps is absolutely vital! I can happily skip through DVDs just to watch the corps, esp Giselle and La Bayadere

      La Bayadere...completely agree, the corps is superb. I love Nikkiya's variations but nothing can compare to the Kingdom of shadows entrance...

    When Annette Buvoli puts her veil on backstage---it's everything theatre is, everything the magical ritual of performance means...and under the veil with her large eyes
    she looks exactly like the lithograph of some legendary 19th C ballerina! What's more sublime in Art than 'Giselle'?

    Having finally attended a Royal Ballet performance of the production this week I can say that it is a quiet transcendental experience and the illusions created on stage are extraordinary.

    I was named Giselle by my mother during her pregnancy, she told me that she was delighted by the Act and by the ballet dancers. I've actually became a professional belly dancer, it's not quite a ballet dancer though but, it's a bit close.

      Hannah Bruce, if not going for a professional level, would you still be able to perform on stage?? Or would it just be constantly in a studio learning? I'm currently 17 with no chances of going professional, but I'd still love to learn. Even if I never set foot on a stage.

      VonSmore some dance schools have annual dance shows but depending on how old you are, you can audition for some productions for people under 18. I’ve done both and shows are really great to do!

    What a beautiful story. And the ballet is so powerful and emotional in every way. Was this Giselle played by Natalia Osipova?

    • @RoyalBalletAndOpera
      @RoyalBalletAndOpera  8 лет назад +67

      +Pauline IV This film was created for the 2014 cinema broadcast which starred Natalia Osipova and Carlos Acosta, but during that run of performances the corps de ballet also danced with other casts, including Roberta Marquez and Steven McRae, Sarah Lamb and McRae, Marianela Nuñez and Thiago Soares, Lauren Cuthbertson and Federico Bonelli and Laura Morera and Bonelli.

      First Artists are the Royal Ballet's more senior members of the corps de ballet, whereas a First Soloist is the highest soloist rank before Principals. Hope that helps :)
