  • A look at the role of a coach and how they prepare the dancers of The Royal Ballet to perform at the highest level. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/swanlake
Swan Lake was Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky's first score for ballet. Its 1877 premiere was poorly received, but it has since become one of the most loved of all ballets. The twinned role of the radiant White Swan and the scheming, duplicitous Black Swan tests the full range of a ballerina's powers, particularly in the two great pas de deux of Acts II and III. Other highlights include the charming Dance of the Little Swans performed by a moonlit lake and sweeping ballroom waltzes in the splendour of the royal palace.
Anthony Dowell's glorious interpretation uses classical choreography created by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa for the ballet's revised 1895 version. Dramatic costumes emphasize the contrast between human and spirit worlds, while glowing lanterns, shimmering fabrics and designs inspired by the work of Peter Carl Fabergé create a magical setting.

Something very nice about these videos, is that you can follow over the time the progress the dancers have made. Francesca Hayward, whom we see there being rehearsed as a corps de ballet member, is now a principal dancer.

I love these videos because you get to see how the ballet gets to the stage from all the perspectives, dancers, coaches, management, pianists, musicians. You understand what a true team effort it has to be to keep the Royal Ballet and any ballet company in top shape. You also see how much work goes in to every ballet whether it is a classical or contemporary work.

Love this video. Though I haven't gotten to explore the whole array very much yet, I really appreciate all this wonderful content from the Royal Ballet and the ROH. So well done, and so interesting. I hope to get to see the Royal Ballet live again someday (how about a little tour to Dallas, and Texas generally?), and will be glad to see the company again in the cinema, hopefully soon. The ROMEO & JULIET shown in cinema a few years ago (Lauren Cuthbertson was Juliet, but that's all I remember for sure) was devastatingly excellent. I was weeping, sometimes at the beauty, sometimes at the drama and tragedy. Unfortunately, there were only about 10 people in the hall (which was up from two or three for Osipova, Vasiliev and the Bolshoi in a ridiculously fabulous DON Q, and the Bolshoi again, with Alexandrova, in a marvelous ESMERALDA; no promotion, and people just don't know these things are showing, so then the cinemas cut back on showing them). Anyway, thanks so much for these videos!
