- Swan Lake is one of the most iconic ballets of all time, with a history and story that has captivated audiences for generations. In this video, we delve into the origins of the ballet and its legacy. We explore the tale of Prince Siegfried and his forbidden love for the enchanted swan princess Odette, and the powerful themes of love, betrayal, and redemption that have made the ballet a timeless classic.
I started "Ballet Explained" to make videos which focus on the narrative and meaning of famous ballets. I want to present ballet in a simple, entertaining, clear and concise way.

I've watched a few videos about this balett, and yours is the first one that mentions that there are two different endings. I was so confused why all of them show something different at the end. Thank you for explaining it so well, now I'm truly ready to see my first ballet next month! 😁
Thank you for your comment! I hope you enjoy your first ballet ☺️
I hope it is as mezmerizing as ballet is for me at it's finest!
there are about 3 different endings: the usual is the Prince and Swan queen die together, break the spell and are united in death.
there is a "Soviet" ending in which the Prince kills Rothbart and he breaks the spell that way and he and Odette are united alive
a super tragic ending that was used first in a staging by Nureyev--the Prince drowns in a storm created by Rothbart(super dramatic) and Odette is transformed completely into a swan forever.
I always thought it was bullshit that Siegfried accidentally declaring his love for someone disguised as Odette apparently counted as betrayal. It's not like he was actively cheating on her -cough like Albrecht with Bathilde-
As far as he knew, he was swearing to love Odette and didn't know Odile even existed. After all, the black costume is for the *audience's* benefit, the characters don't know they're in a ballet.
At the other hand Siegfried should have felt within his heart it was not his loved one. In Russian fairy tale movie Varvara the Beauty the princess turned herself into a bird and replicates it. And two guys have to guess where is the girl among many birds. And only the one who really loves her instantly sees her among the other birds. He says he just didnt note the others. ruclips.net/video/0ZXi-3AtYZI/видео.html
Have you ever thought that maybe Albrecht truly was in love with Giselle & that his engagement to Bathilde was arranged? Maybe he didn't want to marry Bathilde but had no choice. If that was the case, Albrecht is still to blame for Giselle's demise, but at least then he would come from a better place
Finally a video I was looking foor thanks for explaining the plot
One of my favorite anime is Dance Dance Danseur (a teenage boy rediscovers his love for ballet) and this is where i learned of the multiple endings to swan lake. They performed the tragic ending but also killed Rothbart with true love
Don’t forget princess tutu is basically an anime tribute to the ballet as well as the main character being the “Odette” while “Odile” is portrayed by another dance named Rue
I've never seen swan lake the ballet. But i loved the swan princess as a child and still do. I love love love odettes name! I vaguely knew what swan lake was about, but when you Said odettes name at the beginning i put two and two together and realized the movie is based on the ballet. I did ballet for several years and my mother took me to see a few, most notably the nutcracker. But i really can't believe i never put them together until now!
Wow, I hope you continue to make these videos. I dont consider myself a very deep person. I don't naturally pick up the meaning behind poetry, dance etc. It's nice to get an explanation with the visual.
Thank you! I'm glad that it was helpful 😊
Just got tickets to see this ballet. It will be my first. Excellent video, thank you. I can't wait.
Hope you enjoy it!
MIl gracias! Este Ballet es un regalo del Cielo y gracias a tu explicación puede llegar a mucha más gente.
Egyptian Mythology tells a story of Isis, Osiris, and Nephthys. Nephthys pretends to be Isis as she is jealous of her sisters relationship with Osiris. She deceives Osiris and Isis finds out and is heartbroken. Osiris begs for her forgiveness….
Sounds similar yes? Mythology at the root of all timeless classics ❤thank you for making this video!
I just found your channel and you explain the stories so well! There's so many people that don't understand the stories behind the ballets and miss out on them. I can usually figure it out myself, but its nice to have it all explained so well! I see you haven't done a video on nutcracker yet, please consider it!
Thank you so much! The Nutcracker is on my list for sure :)
Thank you for this
I never knew there was such a dark meaning to this ballet...
The American Ballet Swan Lake is my favorit to date.
I deduct points due to the fact that you didn’t mention Barbie in Swan Lake
Fair 😂
I was waiting for it too lol. That's where i first learnt of swan lake
She sucks
Barbie was when I first learned it was a ballet😂 the swan princess was just a awesome movie to me, but barbie was advertised as "based on the ballet" barbie introduced me to alot of things that I likely would never have been interested in otherwise.
That's so cute lol 😍 I mean that sincerely
Ballet is so beautiful
Wow which is the company with the dancers through the sun? That looks amazing! 🤩
Yes, that's the one 🙂
Wait a minute, New Dream Swan Music Collection; Swan Lake Ballet, The Lake of the Swans Ballet, The Happy Swan Ballet, The Dying Swan Ballet, Odette; The Dark Side of Swan Lake Musical, The Wild Swans Ballet, Children of Lir Ballet, Children of Lir Opera, Honk the Musical, The Ugly Duckling Song, Swan Song, Le Cygne Ballet, and The Swan of Tuonela Concert.
not me as a child learning about swan lake from barbie
Thank you for your very concise & through summary of Swan Lake. I just watched a short of Neal Sean’s program re Miss Merkle informing King Charles the Dear Harry will not be attending the Coronation of the King in May unless SHE, Miss Merkle is included in the invitation. Her father-in-law was
tThat Dear Harry will not be in attendance unless, SHE, Miss Merkle, is included in the
invitation as well. King Charles thank her for her response to the invitation to the Coronation & ended the call. Whereupon the cameras shifted to a concert hall & the orchestra starting to play the beginning of the playing the introduction to Act 3 or 4 of Swan Lake & Odile , dressed in black, makes her entrance pretending be Odette & I reacted immediately w/ a loud “HUH? Isn’t that from Swan Lake?” Then I realized just exactly who & what theme from Swan Lake was being played & I got it.
I’m sorry that my comment is kinda garbled, but I had a fall & a concussion followed by a TIA a month ago so I am garbled. But I did think the use of the darker theme of Swan lLake made perfect sense under the circumstance, even though my brains are rather scrambled.
I am so excited!! The Russian Ballet Company will be visiting our country and I am booked to watch that master performance! I am over the moon!❤🎉❤
MLBB Odette brought me here 😅
Thy eternal summer shall not fade
What an absolutely amazing channel. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. 🩰
Thank you so much!
Where can I see the full performance of the ballet in this video?
I mostly used footage from the American Ballet Theatre production of Swan Lake. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/I9rEmB4h6TE/видео.htmlsi=XLIrNc6s_9xgCTVL
So The Lake of the Swans was originally a Ballet-Pantomime for Tchaikovsky's Nieces and Nephews created in 1871 at his sister's home in Ukraine.
Lindos 💕
Interesting video, but the AI voice freaks me out. She doesn't draw a breath once whilst "reading" the script and it's so earie.
Duuuude. Why do you people preferably choose the tragic ending???
Don't get it fucked up ya'll... I must be the crazy one 👀
wait wait... does the couple die in the end?? 😮
In the sad ending version, yes.
It sounds like Disney little mermaid, now we know where they get the story from
No, you should considered Brother Grimm existed before
@@adamejialainez4461 did you mean Hans Christian Andersen? The dude who wrote the little mermaid.
Most of Disney's classic animations are often based on fairytales and already existing folk tales.
It's a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. Disney's version is not the original. It's common that the fairy tales by H.C. Andersen and by the Brothers Grimm ended in tragedy or some other negative outcome, and there are instances of violence and tragedy in the middle of the stories, too. The unrelenting cheerfulness and sweet endings are Disney's devices to make the story more popular for his purposes.
I wish I wanna wear that ballerina dress
So The Lake of the Swans is German and Swan Lake is Russian.
The b,ack swan is a juvenile swan
Why do you fill the swan lake are dance drama group.
Let's be honest, most men would probably love that deal. Half the time his wife is a swan so he doesn't have to listen to her lame stories and gossip? He can relax and have personal time and only see his wife at night? Psh... Come on.
It seems that your heart has been through an awful lot.
I pray that you find inner peace. 🤍
@lapiz6839 you may not know it, maybe you do, but you went absolutely nuclear here.
