Principals of The Royal Ballet Yasmine Naghdi (Juliet) and Matthew Ball (Romeo) perform the passionate Balcony Pas de deux from Kenneth MacMillan's 20th-century ballet masterpiece.
Kenneth MacMillan's passionate choreography for Romeo and Juliet shows The Royal Ballet at its dramatic finest. Sergey Prokofiev's iconic score provides the basis for the ballet's romantic pas de deux and vibrant crowd scenes, while 16th-century Verona is created by Nicholas Georgiadis's magnificent designs.
In 1965, MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet was given its premiere at Covent Garden by The Royal Ballet and was an immediate success: the first night was met with rapturous applause, which lasted for 40 minutes, and an incredible 43 curtain calls. The title roles were danced by Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, although the ballet had been created on Christopher Gable and Lynn Seymour. It has been performed by The Royal Ballet more than four hundred times since, as well as touring the world, and has become a true classic of the 20th-century ballet repertory.

When he picks her up, she looks like she is flying. She really embodies how young Juliet actually was through her movements. The chemistry between the two seems so real, especially when they kiss. Wonderful, wonderful performance.
two of the most talented humans on the planet, Its so sad that thier career has been crulley interupted by this horrible state of affairs. they are 2 of the most gifted dancers around at the moment.
@Tejaswini Anbazhagan of course, what else

Pointe shoes were created to seem like the dancer was floating
@grapeball XD
i don't think I've ever watched a pas de deux and felt so much romantic chemistry or tension between the two partners. they're so wonderful together it hurts.
I said that to myself when I watched this video yesterday and now, I'm watching it again :-) , they're really special together, unique couple¡¡¡ and Yasmine is absolutely divine , her technique is superb , magnificent, and the beauty of her dancing is really a joy to watch , what a beautiful ballerina ¡¡
Yepp
True
It is simply the best emotional pas de deux around!
I felt the same. It was the best
She is like water and he is so gentle. God this is magnificent
(Edit) JEEZ thanks for all the likes everyone!

okay...honestly the most beautifully depicted Romeo and Juliet I have seen
This was so beautiful too but i think you should watch Alessandra Ferri's Romeo and Juliet balcony scene
the new generation of Principle Dancers of the royal ballet are beginning to express their true talents
a mac agreed!
I think Jasmine is especially lovely.
Yasmine and Francesca are the best Juliettes I can ever imagine!!
Just imaginging how a they will feel when they see this comment🥺
I've always wanted to be a ballerina but now I'm 17 and it's totally too late, but maybe it would happened in another life , this is art , wonderful .
It's never too late. If you love it, do it
I'm 17 too, I started dancing last year, I really want to go further, but it's hard to find time, but dude, if you want to do it, go for it, it can't hurt more than the regret knowing you could have done something but you didn't try
It may be too late to join a ballet company, although not necessarily. But it's not too late to take up ballet for your own pleasure. Don't give up!
If there's a will there's a way... don't give up on your dream, it's never too late
Some of the best artists, athletes, and great minds didn't start learning their trade until they were much older than 17. It is never too late to do something important, and if you strive for something with all of your heart, might, mind, and strength there is nothing you cant accomplish.
For everyone who regrets not starting ballet at a young age: when I was 7 I started ballet but I didn’t know anyone in my classes and I couldn’t take part to the final show of my dance school because my grandma died right before it, so I quit dance. It was the worst decision I’ve ever made. At 11 I started watching lots of ballet videos on RUclips and I wanted to go back dancing, but my friends made me think that it was too late, also because the other girls of my age already started to do pointe work. Last year at 14 I decided that nothing couldn’t let me down again so I enrolled in the school where I used to go when I was 7. I’m so happy, of course it was a bit hard at first, but I worked hard and after 5 months I started doing basic pointe works. After one year I can say that ballet is one of my biggest passions, of course I won’t become a professional dancer but I’m doing what I like and that’s what really matters. I’ve also made lots of new friends who immediately welcomed and helped me.
So don’t be scared and do whatever you like! 💗
Update: now I’m 17 and I am more and more in love with dancing. I am so happy of my improvements and I know my hard work will be repaid!

Amazing story for you!!! Ballet is wonderful and we can know a lot of things through it. No ballet no life🩰❤️❤️

@Kylen Davis I’m happy about it! I’m sure that with determination you’ll be able to reach your goal!
Our stories are so similar, damn. I started ballet when I was around 8, my grandma used to take me. When my grandma passed away, I stopped going because I didn’t feel it was the same. That was when I was 11. I’ve just recently got back into dance, contemporary, but I’m thinking of starting ballet again. I’m 16.
I keep thinking she’s about to leave but then she DOESNT
edit: also oml the way the fabric of her dress moves with her.. ethereal
plot twists happening over and over again
Just like in Shakespeare! :)
LMAO YEAH LIKE BYE SEEYA CUTIE... SIKE
I KNOW IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL I'LL CRY
This was so intimate, so passionate. The story they were telling seemed so real that I felt as though I was invading a lover's privacy simply by watching--and yet I couldn't pry my eyes away! :, ) Ballet is powerful. No amount of words can outdo the all-encompassing speech that is movement--that is bodily expression. MY SOUL IS EXPLODING.

Yeah, I was in tears while watching 🥰
That's so true! I felt so uncomfortable but intrigued!
We were there that night and at the moment of the kiss there was a group sigh all around the auditorium. Such a magical experience, such wonderful dancers and so perfect to think that it was seen by a huge audience everywhere watching Big screens
those pique attitude turns...GORGEOUS
Anna Dai-Liu I was just thinking the same.
The way that she move and the dress flowing is beautiful
Their acting is wonderful. And that kiss in the end, the way she just disappears in that innocent but satisfied and happy way... oh my. When you consider how their story goes on, it's really heartbreaking to see them this happy and fulfilled
As someone who’s done ballet for ten years and studied the play itself - this is the most beautiful thing in the entire world.
I admire Ballet dancers... they're athletes as well as actors. It must be hard not to crack a smile when they have to kiss too. Especially here, it was a almost a makeout session
I have a ballerina friend, quite a beautiful, well known dancer, who had to stop her career. When she went (?) 'en point' and would spin on one toe, she would release violent farts, even heard over the orchestra. She would be in tears, but the public would be hysterically laughing. So sad and awful for her.

This is so romantic and also sensual at the same time. I definitely could feel the Romeo and Juliet atmosphere 😍
When he kissed her hand and she flutterd away, that is the physical embodiment of what it feels like inside
they're like dust particles dancing in the rhythm of time. so beautiful.

I feel like the duo's love ends up maturing so fast in this ballet.
- In the party Romeo and Juliet are 14. Young, innocent, playful and flirting.
- In the balcony scene, they're in their 20s. More mature, deep, meaningful, passionate. This is no longer a childlike infatuation. This is true love.
- In the bedroom scene, they're in their 30s or 40s. Melancholic, forced to be adults and make adult decisions. The sorrow of farewell.
- In the death scene, they're 14 again. So young and vulnerable, having lost their first true loves and overwhelmed with despair.
dumb kids. one reason i never cared for the play...
Oh jesus. Her dress it's dancing with them.

How wonderful and breathtaking. What a couple!
The way she throws herself into his arms!! So much trust and chemistry
I love how joyful their movements are! the young lovers being swept away by what they find in each other is magic ❤
Indeed ❤

YES
I WAS THINKING THAT THE WHOLE TIME
Watching her point her feet is so satisfying
the way he holds her look like she's the most precious thing in the world
3:58 they are incredible. They made 3 minutes seem like hours, and I’m completely convinced that they are falling deeper and deeper into love just by DANCE- it’s immaculate
This is just so beautiful and I'm not exaggerating, I literally cried. That elegance, that romance! Best Romeo and Juliet!
3:14 wow ne next seconds are so wonderful, she makes it look so flawless and easy and he is holding her like nothing, pure magic 🌟
Obsessed! Saw this in the cinema and literally got goosebumps. Their chemistry is AMAZING. Wish I could have been there in real life. Perfect Romeo and Juliet!
The chemistry though, i can't. Acting skills 10/10
Thank you Royal Opera House for reposting the extract with the last bit of music.
That’s what makes this Opera House and ballet company my favorite. I see true respect not only to the viewers but to the art form itself.
And again, this is an exquisite performance. My heart is full!
Their lines are literally so perfect it makes me want to cry from joy! Also they dance together so seamlessly I didn't know who's limbs were whose half the time. Absolutely stunning!
THAT WAS THE BEST BALLET CHEMISTRY IVE EVER SEEN
absolutely beautiful...I must say that Matthew is quite handsome!

I love watching ballet. The dancers just throw all their emotions onto the stage, and the movements are so graceful. It truly makes you understand the truth behind communication through dance.
Великолепно! Необыкновенно красиво и романтично. Танцоры выше всяческих похвал. Истинное удовольстаие видеть этот дуэт. Браво!
We should get a DVD of this performance of R&J!!! PLEASE PLEASE. This couple is absolutely exceptional.
It's just been released!
Really??? Great!!!
I have watched this over many times and I can tell you it is ballet at it’s finest.. where everything comes together, from years of training to principal dancers. As a ballet teacher and ballet coach for many years, every so often one comes across that undefinable magic between 2 dancers.. and this is it. The flawless technique and emotions conveyed by these 2 superb dancers speak a thousand words. Yes, and that moment where they kiss is truly seen and felt. Just pure joy to watch. Kudos to the 2 leads and their portrayal of the star-crossed lovers…this, and the bedroom scene, brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it. 🩰♥️🩰♥️
The joy of young love. So beautifully portrayed. Perfect partnership.
the arabesque sequence at 3:15 is just pure magic
Who else stays up all night watching ballets until 3?
This is one of the best chemistry performances I've ever seen within the younger generation dancers. Breathtaking@
Amazing...they can communicate so much joy and passion without a single word. A perfect representation of the giddiness of young love.
oh wow this is perfection just tugging at my heartstrings. the way he breathes her in like air...they just told a story without words
Screaming, crying , throwing up. This is SPLENDID
It's lovely to see a Romeo and Juliet performed by dancers who appear to be age appropriate for the roles. Absolutely exquisite!
My eyes are watering from the beauty. They are just stunning. And the music, their acting, that kiss!!
Watching this dance is like water - they're so in sync with one another. They adapt to each other's shape so well. Profoundly beautiful.
It’s like I could FEEL the chemistry and their attraction towards each other through the screen!!!!
So incredibly beautiful I don’t know what to do with myself.
Wow she's literally gliding... such beautiful, light movements.
Breathtaking😍 they are incredibly talented dancers and have amazing chemistry😍😍
The dancing is so perfect, it looks so effortless, like she's floating, flying and free.
There will never again be such entrancing choreography as in this past de send! You can feel the love. Totally magnetic!Bravo Kenneth MacMillan
so satisfying to see macmillan danced cleanly with attention to line.
They are such an amazing dancers♥️ their connection is fantastic, I never felt that romantic sense and it makes me want to be in love 😍
She was so graceful and he was so emotion filled it was one of the prettiest things I’ve ever seen. They made this truly magical. ❤️🎶
They look like they're dancing in a little elegant bubble, they beautifully portray the passion and excitement
It doesn't get better than this! Two bodies moving as one. Not only amazing dancers but brilliant actors!
I think this is one of my favourite videos in youtube. Love them plying Romeo and Juliet. They are just perfect. I wish so much watch all the Ballet.
This is terrific. Every single move is done at the exact time it should be. It never stops flowing. Makes me understand more how important each and every detail is. I’m just a fan.
He made her float so gracefully
the way her dress flows is so satisfying... and kudos to him for being able to carry her so many times while performing such an elegant show
SO BEAUTIFUL I WASNT EXPECTING THE KISS BUT IT WAS MAGICAL
OMG. Will watch that a hundred times over. Wow. So Exquisite - the beauty is unparalleled.
I mean this in the best of ways:
Their dance looked so perfectly geometrical, but like, one of those patterns which is composed of straight lines, yet manages to give the impression of curves. Enchanting!
The most divine...her arms, them melting into each other over and over, the kiss, his face after she leaves, the choreography...this was truly special.
I keep watching this and crying every time...so absolutely beautifully breathtaking!
Jesus she's incredibly graceful and makes it look effortless. Like flowing water
I really hope ROH will one day release this particular production to blu ray. I loved Bonelli/Cuthbertson but this couple is perfection.
I am hoping so too! I have the Bonelli/Cuthbertson Opus Arte version but this would definitely be one to get!👍🏼😊
I hope so too.

This has been one of my favorite pas de deux (and love scenes) since seeing Baryshnikov/Browne in 1977’s “The Turning Point”.
This pair tops it, for me. Great technique, beautiful phrasing, and incredible chemistry and connection between them. Stunning. ☺️💞💞
One of the most beautiful things i’ve ever seen! Just wow
this brought me to tears. everything was perfect, I couldn't count a SINGLE flaw
This is the best chemistry. Comparable to Corella and Ferri. The kiss. Just wow. Their movements are glorious.
Matthew is the perfect Romeo👌
this is so beautiful. the amount of technique and skill needed for this piece is unbelievable, and they execute it perfectly. i am absolutely mind blown.
Performances in ballet should be filmed and videotaped as much as possible. That way people can have "gems" and "witnesses" of their craft for generations and generations to come.
i couldn’t stop myself from smiling. this piece is stunningly beautiful. the choreographer and dancers did a fabulous job 😊 her arabesque is perfect
this is gorgeous. i could go to a million ballet musicals, but never this one this romantic! i love Romeo and Juliet and especially this one.
Ballet and musicals are not the same thing
Never have I seen such gentle and beautiful unspoken passion, wowza
This is the ultimate performance of the greatest choreography of the best scene in my favorite ballet. The orchestra could not be better. This leaves me breathless!
This is the most beautiful balcony pas de deux... they both have this lovely, innocent and shy smile 🥰 Looks so real! Sublime 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️
they are beautiful and the chemistry and intimacy and romance is just portrayed so beautifully and their dancing was so elegant
I get so caught up in the beauty of this, that I forget the amazing technicality of the dancers. They make it seem so easy like they're two lovers, but when you stop to think of all that goes into giving us this amazing magical performance it's mind blowing.
WHEN SHE GOES EN POINTE (is that the term?) SO THEY CAN KISS MINUTES AFTER THE ALMOST KISS IM GOING FERAL
I have a ballerina friend, quite a beautiful, well known dancer, who had to stop her career. When she went (?) This pas de deux is the reason I started ballet :P
Glorious! They are artists of the highest caliber: technically, dramatically, artistically - pure magic and all so very simple and natural (as it should be) and therefore, the most expressive and touching R & J I have seen in my 60 years of seeing ballet in New York. This is the magic of ballet. BRAVO!
They are both magnificent. Besides their respective technique, what sublime performers .. They are literally possessed by their role. In three words: a pure wonder.
when i say this dance has never made me cry i’d be lying. one time my studio did this dance for a showcase thingie (some professional guest dancers did this particular dance) and me and all my friends were balling our eyes out backstage
Was so lucky to see it in Covent Garden with these two beautiful dancers. Simply cannot wait for us all to be able to go to the ROH again, see ballet, opera, music live once this COVID relents. In the meantime, rewatching some of the ROH gems is a much appreciated treat! Thank you!
I'm watching this with the sound off, and their acting is so good and moving, I'm brought to tears! :)
It was like they are extensions of one another. Like any good relationship you are meant to add to one another. Plus their chemistry made this pas de deux.
