Summer of 1996 was great. I addition to this there was Twister, Independence Day, The Rock, Nutty Professor, Eraser, Courage Under Fire, A Time to Kill, Striptease, Tin Cup, Phenomenon, Cable Guy, Dragonheart, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Kingpin, Escape From L.A., and The Frighteners. I paid to see every single one of those in theaters. I practically lived at the theater. I saw Mission Impossible about 4 times! Can you imagine that many films coming out during a summer movie season these days? I absolutely HATE the fact that theatrical distribution is slowly going away and we're all just going to be watching everything at home. Part of the magic of the movies is that you have to sit in a room with a bunch of other people, and you have to be 100% dialed in. At home there are too many distractions and the experience is just completely different. It makes me sad.

Yes, the mask thing was a big feature in the TV show. The team would have a 'faceman' ( the character would be some professional actor who apparently was good at voices too ) wear a mask, have some conversation with a bad guy ( let's call him Guy 1 ), posing as some other bad guy ( Guy 2 ), when the team was sure Guy 2 was away. Faceman would leave, then later Guy 2 returns. Guy 1 gets mad, accuses Guy 2 of double-crossing him, sometimes a shootout or murder happens. The team drives away during the confusion.

Jim Phelps in the TV series of Mission Impossible (not a bad guy) was played by the actor who was the pervy Captain in Airplane! (AKA Flying High). Just to give you a heads up, "Get Smart" was in no way a serious TV show. The head villain was Doc from "The Love Boat", and a running gag was the cone of silence. But, having since watched the old M:I series as I got older, what's really cool is that 'Mr. Phelps' (played by Jon Voight) was the youthful protagonist in the original show, so fans of the TV series watching the movie would have been like 'Oh, there's no way Mr. Phelps would betray the IMF!'. Such clever writing.
Also, I completely agree with all the previous comments about M:I 2. I personally did not like it, but they certainly tried something radically different with director John Woo. Every movie after that has been excellent, with parts 5 and 6 being simply amazing action films!

Something you see more with TV shows is that it takes awhile for a series to find it's footing, for the actors to get a real feel for their character and the writers to know what kind of story they're going to be telling, so with this movie series the 1st sets the foundation of what to expect going forward, the 2nd kind of drifts away a bit, on its own it's a good movie, but compared to the series it stands out(personally I feel like they were trying to also change the film to be more like an American James Bond type of movie), but by the 3rd they get back on track, stay true to what got them there, and each one from then on out is better than the previous one.

Quite coincidentally/unfortunately during the 1988 Writers Strike (which at 153 days was, and hopefully always will be, the longest WGA strike) there was another Mission Impossible series created. This is the opening theme: ruclips.net/video/najnclm0F50/видео.html
Since reality TV wasn't really a thing back then and they needed new shows to put on the air they decided to use scripts from the 1960's Mission Impossible, update them a little and create a new show. It sticks in my mind because it was one of the first major American productions filmed in my home country of Australia. At the time it was like 20% cheaper to film here. The only person from the original who came back was Peter Graves as Jim Phelps. The rest of the cast were mostly locals except for Phil Morris who was the son of Greg Morris who played Barney Collier in the original series. I have fond memories of watching it as a kid. They did lean on the masks quite a bit. The updated theme may be my favourite version possibly because it was the first version I heard but i still love it. It's been years since I've seen them all. Like anything it has it's ups and downs but it's not too bad. You can see for yourself as all episodes are freely available on RUclips.

The reason the henchman looks like a Die Hard villain is because he WAS one. It’s Andreas Wisniewski who plays Tony, the first John kills and writes his ho-ho-ho message on. He also plays a villain in Timothy Daltons first Bond outing. Not bad going for a retired ballet dancer !

One of several classic tv series, created by Bruce Gellar.
Among the many iconic series of the 1960s Spy craze.
There was a continuation of the series in the late 1980s with characters from the original and newly added characters.
The theme by Lalo Scrifrin is so timeless with Intrigue and excitement.
Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen from the group, U2 did a new version of the theme song for this movie.
Tom Cruise in the mid-1990s officially became a producer.
Both Cruise and miss Paula Wagner formed a company.
Both were given the greenlight for the rights to make M:I as an movie.
This first film matches the tv series at almost perfect beat and Cruise becomes the consummate stunt performer we know him to be today.
As the tv series resurged back into reruns, Cruise definitely had a franchise and we couldn't wait for more missions on the big screen.
Your gonna love the other 5 installments.

Before we get into the movie ... No, no, no, there are already 6 in the series now, so the next 2 will be #'s 7 & 8 in the series:
    1. Mission Impossible (1996)
    2. Mission Impossible II (2000)
    3. Mission Impossible III (2006)
    4. Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol (2011)
    5. Mission Impossible Rogue Nation (2015)
    6. Mission Impossible Fallout (2018)
So, you better get to gettin' ...
Now, there were 7 seasons of the TV show, not 3, 2 with Desilu and 5 with Paramount, and went from 1966-1973, but there was no Ethan Hunt in the original series.
The 1st Spy movie or TV show was James Bond's Dr. No. Get Smart came was a Spy Movie/TV spoof and had 5 seasons from 1965-1970. Another really great series was Wild Wild West, which had 4 seasons from 1965-1969. Then, there was The Man From U.N.C.L.E., a 4 season British spy series from 1964-1968. Then, there was the show, I Spy (Robert Culp & Bill Cosby) which was on for 3 seasons from 1965 to 1968. There was also another British Spy TV show called, The Avengers, which enjoyed I believe 7 seasons from 1961-1969 (skipped a year twice in its run). Finally, though there were others of lesser importance, there was The Saint (Roger Moore) which ran for 6 seasons across 8 years, 1962-1969.
All of these shows were really very good, especially for the times.

After making films like Phantom of the Paradise, Obsession, Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Scarface, Body Double, Wise Guys, The Untouchables, and Carlito's Way, he never made another film after Mission: Impossible that was either critically or commercially successful.

The scene of the explosion forcing pushing Cruise/Hunt forward was generally mocked. An explosion pushes you forward instead of tossing fire and other bad stuff into your body?
It's easy to imagine Cruise, and other people working on these movies, to think "Can we make the action scenes more real?" So we end up with Cruise doing actual scenes in the movies following this one, which a regular human would not volunteer for.

Hey, YouMe! This franchise is based on the 1960s TV SERIES starring Peter Graves and its 1980s revival.
Both runs of the series were more about long cons by a small team of operatives such as the opening set piece and relied on the gimmick of wearing disguises and utilizing cool spy gadgets. The movies retain those elements but are more about white-knuckle stunts performed by Cruise himself!
The LALO SCHIFRIN score is one of TV's most iconic themes and never fails to set the electrifying pace!
What many people don't realize is that JON VOIGHT is playing JIM PHELPS, the team leader of the TV series played by PETER GRAVES in the '60s original and '80s reboot! That means the hero of the series turns into the villain of the movie! Graves was actually approached for a cameo but he didn't like the twist about his signature character and declined to participate.
Phelps kills his young wife because his ego couldn't tolerate her being attracted to his young protege. He wanted absolute loyalty and commitment from her which she betrayed by coming to Ethan's defense. Having her work in close proximity to a guy like Ethan, their September-May relationship was doomed from the get-go! Lol. The hot youngsters' mutual attraction was evident in the first scene!
The series is mostly consistently excellent and is one of the best action franchises ever made!
The first three films are products of their directors bearing their undeniable signatures. This was every inch a BRIAN DEPALMA film with POV shots, flashback sequences and low-angle vantage points.
DePalma was most definitely inspired by JULES DASSIN's heist films for the famous Langley caper scene. In both 1955's "RIFIFI" and 1964's "TOPKAPI", the intricate thefts are plotted out for the audience, executed in SCORELESS SILENCE, initiated from a ceiling ingress and nearly foiled with a slip.

As you have ridden the chunnel, you must realize the massive errors in that scene.
    1) the TGV is an electric train, powered by overhead wires which are strangely missing in the scene, likely because their presence would have made Phelps' escape by helicopter plan impossible - the helicopter's line would catch on the poles which suspend the wires in seconds.
    2) The scene where Ethan has to avoid being crushed between 2 trains. - The Chunnel trains are in 2 separate tunnels (there is a 3rd service tunnel between them). Having two trains meet head-on at 300 km/h in a narrow tunnel would cause nasty pressure waves which would not be good for the trains, let alone anyone foolish enough to be hanging on the outside of it (or a helicopter which somehow made it in to the tunnel.
    3) About that helicopter - Bell 500 helicopters have a rotor diameter of 8.33 metres. The chunnel diameter is 7.6 metres. I don't care how good a pilot Krierger is, that is like trying to stuff a 25 pound turkey into an easy-bake oven.
