- Today, my wife and I are watching Mission Impossible for the first time!
When U.S. government operative Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his mentor, Jim Phelps (Jon Voight), go on a covert assignment that takes a disastrous turn, Jim is killed, and Ethan becomes the prime murder suspect. Now a fugitive, Hunt recruits brilliant hacker Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) and maverick pilot Franz Krieger (Jean Reno) to help him sneak into a heavily guarded CIA building to retrieve a confidential computer file that will prove his innocence.

"love so many pieces of the media he's in" That would be referring to the art. "How deep he is in the scientology" is discussing the artist/the man. While the original subject was just the man/artist. And I agree love his movies, disturbed by the man, and that is seperating the art from the artist.

One of the greatest things about this movie was that in the original Mission: Impossible series, you always felt afraid for the characters, you always felt tension that they were going to die, but they always made it out. None of them ever actually die. And then in this movie they just totally subvert that expectation and shock watchers of the original series by killing nearly the whole team within the first 15 minutes.
But it does go against what the Mission:Impossible title was supposed to be about. A team effort, with each member having their part. The movie series turned into a Tom Cruise solo franchise.
@@Yngvarfo This is true, to an extent. I mean, he certainly takes center stage. Everybody does have a contribution to make, but his seems the largest. I do feel like you get more teamwork in the later movies, like Ghost Protocol on, but he's still the star. Huh. I wonder how the movies would be different if characters had equal screen time and importance.
My favorite action franchise of all time. The series has no bad movies. even the second one is so ridiculous that its a blast. And I consider 5 and 6 absolute masterpieces. I am beyond excited for 7 and it's my most anticipated movie of the year.

For long time I found the 2nd movie somewhat a step up compared to the first one and I kinda liked it, and the 3rd movie was the least liked one.Theese days it has turned,yes,the first movies story telling is a bit confusing the second is the weak but its still fun cuz its ridiculous!The 3rd one I consider very serious and became a solid fan after that!Can't wait for the next one!Tom is great!
Yessss! Tell me you're doing the whole series of movies. The stunts in these are unrivaled. And they keep getting better and better. 2 and 3 were a little meh but since then it's been insane.
C'mon. Everyone's dissing John Woo's MI, but it was such a blast. Tom Cruise never did such crazy fight choreographies until Fallout
@@HABO2210 2 was frankly a misstep and doesn't gel all that well with what comes after. 3 rights the ship somewhat and then 4 and onwards are just great. I'm glad the new one is bringing back Kittridge to tie it all together.
I agree 2 don't fit but as a standalone movie it's alot of fun and for its time which was the bullet time era was a great action film

The way it was shot with unique camera angles was due to Brian DePalma directing, it’s a style of his he used in Scarface, Carrie, The Untouchables and Carlito’s Way. He’s very good at filming tension, the stairway scene with the baby carriage in The Untouchables comes to mind.
My favorite 3 underrated films from DePalma are BLOW OUT, BODY DOUBLE and DRESSED TO KILL.

I would hardly call the staircase scene in The Untouchables a good example of Brian DePalma's originality, considering that it was lifted straight out of Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin.

That baby pram scene in The Untouchables was *amazing*
Cruise's original plan for the franchise was to make each film radically different from one another in terms of style and tone. It's why John Woo came on to direct the 2nd film and later why JJ Abrams made #3. It's wasn't till then that they started making a long running story arc that started in #3 and continued all the way to the latest movie Dead Reckoning.
Personally for me this is one of those series that just gets better and better.
Though I like all the movies, #2 dropped (no pun intended) in quality, but #3 and onward did increase in top-notch entertainment.
Except for 2 which is worse than 1 and is easily the worst in the series, 3 was very good and 4-5-6 are absurdly good especially 5-6

The theme by Lalo Scrifrin is so timeless with Intrigue and excitement.
Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen from the group, U2 did a new version of the theme song for this movie.
Tom Cruise in the mid-1990s officially became a producer.
Both Cruise and miss Paula Wagner formed a company.
Both were given the greenlight for the rights to make M:I as an movie.
This first film matches the tv series at almost perfect beat and Cruise becomes the consummate stunt performer we know him to be today.
As the tv series resurged back into reruns, Cruise definitely had a franchise and we couldn't wait for more missions on the big screen.
Your gonna love the other 5 installments.
So some extra info about this film. Jon plays the main character from the show Jim Phelps played by Peter Graves at the time. He was supposed to return in the film but the actor refused to play Jim as a Villain so they recast him with Jon Voight.
Also, alot of easter eggs and references from this particular movie make a come back down the line so do pay attention and try to remember them. Makes it all the more fun.

It's a good thing you're going back and watching these from the beginning. There are characters here that actually return in later installments. One character introduced in this film shares a family connection to a character in a future film. So, there's a sense of continuity story wise between the films.
Fun fact: Jim Phelps (Jon Voight's character) is also the team leader in the original series from the 60s. The show's cast HATED this movie because of what it did to Jim's character. Some of them even walked out of the premiere.
They did MI '88, they should be ashamed.
Most fans of the original show hated this too. I watched the show when I was a kid, but wasn't that invested in it, so it was a cool twist to me. But I get it. Like if they made a future MI movie and had Ethan Hunt be the bad guy who betrayed everyone, current fans would be upset too.
What is even more stunning that Jim Phelbs was the mole at the time is that he was the main prodagonist of the entire TV show !
Was looking for this before typing it myself. Its a shame the original actor didn't reprise the role, but understand his reasoning (partially) for why he didnt.
Yeah, there was a lot of hate for making Jim the villian. He was always a paladin, so having him so pissed that he wasn’t the HMFIC anymore that he’d turn on everything he fought for was not recieved well by fans of the TV show.
Thing is if you gew up watching the tvv show th etwist that Jim Phelps was the mole was ridiculously shocking. It would be like if they made a Star Trek movie and it turned out Kirk was the bad guy all along.
Also, they killed off Emilio Estevez at the very beginning, and he was HUGE in '96. I was in HS, and I didn't really know John Vought at the time, but I damn sure knew Emilio.

Mission Impossible... this was the first movie that my wife and I watched in theatre together. I watched the origin TV series in re-run all throughout my childhood and loved it. I loved the bassline for this with the drummer and bassist from U2 for the theme.
So, Jim Phelps is a character from the original TV show (and the 1988 reboot) played by Peter Graves. People weren't especially thrilled that he was made into a villain, especially because this was supposed to take place in the same universe as the shows.
You can include Peter Graves on the list of people who weren't happy with Jim Phelps being the villain. He was actually asked to reprise his role in this film and turned down the role saying why would I play a character that I made famous just to be the villain it's theatrical reboot. So they got Jon Voight to play the part.

@@therandompandaman4521 It's cool. Actually I'm not sure if they tried to reach out to Steven Hill since he played Dan Briggs in the first season before leaving due to filming constraints. Then again he was probably busy with Law & Order at the time and probably couldn't have done it anyways( contracts and all). I kinda wish they never went that route. They tried it again in the second Charles Angels movie and none of the original Angles took the offer(the part would later be played by Demi Moore with only a cameo by Jaclyn Smith).

Maybe it’s because I’m just an old fart but MI:1 is still the absolute best MI movie after all these years. The OG DePalma style of psychological tension and cinematography just cannot be duplicated by any other director.
If you are interested in seeing more DePalma movies, I highly recommend *_Raising Cain_*_ (1992)_
I consider MI:1 as one of the best in the franchise. It really keeps that classic psychological tension without taking the leap to almost superhuman levels of action. The shooting style really draws in the viewer at points as if they are in the position of a character which something so rarely done today.
Oh! And if you are interested in other spy movies that are not MI, I’d also recommend *_The Saint_*_ (1997)_ starring and with a great performance by *Val Kilmer*

Alan Silvestri composer of Predator, MARVEL'S The Avengers, and Back To The Future, was hired to write the score to the movie but was fired by Director Brian DePalma thought that score wasn't powerful enough.
Silvestri would use his rejected score for the Arnold Schwarzenegger Action Adventure ERASER.

About MI2, you're right. it's directed by John Woo, with his signature "two gun" style. So it's slightly more actionny vs espionagy.
Hey, Holden and Jen! The Lalo Schifrin score was made famous by the '60s TV series.
What many people don't realize is that Voight is playing Jim Phelps, the team leader played by Peter Graves in the original show and '80s reboot! That means the hero of the series turns into the villain of the movie!
Phelps kills his young wife because his ego couldn't tolerate her being attracted to his young protege. He wanted absolute loyalty and commitment from her. Having her work in close proximity to a guy like Ethan, their December-May relationship was doomed from the get-go! Lol. Their mutual attraction was evident in the first scene.
The series was more about long cons such as the opening set piece and relied on the gimmick of wearing disguises and utilizing cool spy gadgets. The movies are more about white-knuckle stunts performed by Cruise himself!
The series is consistently excellent and is one of the best action franchises ever made! Beginning with the third film, the narrative becomes an ongoing one carrying over into subsequent chapters. The first three films are products of their directors bearing their undeniable signatures: Brian DePalma, John Woo and J.J. Abrams.
Can’t wait for you guys to get to the latest movies, specifically Rogue Nation and Fallout. The new two-parter that’s being produced right now is looking super promising too, and as a Norwegian I’m pumped to see the Cruise stunts he’ll do here on the big screen.
This first movie and Rogue Hation are my absolute favourites. The others are okay but don't quite stack up in my opinion. But they're still good.
For like, 3-4 years of my childhood, I was 6 or 7 when I first watched this movie. Whenever I needed a haircut, I would go into the salon and ask to get the, Tom Cruise from Mission Impossible, because of this movie. The only reason I stopped, was because the movie fell out of popularity and the hairdressers no longer knew what I meant.
Haha a pup named scooby do reference and a La noire reference within a minute of each other in this video Holden killing it with the one liners in this one.
It’s always interesting hearing the opinions of someone whose seen the later films going back and watching this because the series has evolved so much. This one is so distinctly De Palma
Originally Luthor was not supposed to make it to the end of the film as an ally of Ethan Hunt. Ving Rhames commented that he's like to avoid the black character being a villain and/or dying. Tom Cruise asked that the role be re-written and he became his only ally and then subsequently returned for the remainder of the series.
Also, the actor who is killed on the elevator is Emilio Estevez, good friend of Tom who served best man at his wedding to Mimi Rogers. The original series revolved around an ensemble cast, but the filmmakers wanted to kill off the team to shock the audience early on. Estevez had a break between another production and was already in the area where they were shooting, so he came on board for a few days to shoot his scenes uncredited as a favor to Cruise, who had cameoed in his film "Young Guns" some years prior.
Plus, many of the original TV show actors disavowed the film, saying that it had wildly departed from the spirit of the original show. Some going to far as to boycott it after discovering that Jim Phelps, who was the leader of the team on the show, had been turned into the main villain.
I watched this one, 2 and 4 in theaters. So much fun.
The first one is especially good. If I remember correctly it was directed by Brian de Palma who also directed "The Untouchables". He is really a master of suspense through editing.
Interesting to know is that Jim Phelps is the leader of the IMF team in the TV-Show and the leading character of the Mission Impossible show since Season 2. Making him the bad guy in this movie was quite a move.

So quick bit of history about mission impossible. Originally, Mission Impossible was a TV series from 1966 starring Peter Graves which is where the theme song originally came from. In fact, the character played by Jon Voight (Jim Phelps) was the main character from the original 1966 series!
Fun fact. The scene on the wires was filmed in the UK. Tom Cruise kept tilting forward slightly. So to keep him flat and level, they put a £1 coin in each of his shoes. It was just the right amount of additional weight in just the right place to keep him perfectly paralell to the floor.
I was in High school and working in a theater when this movie was released. We used to clean the theater to the Mission Impossible music, while ducking behind and running in-between theater seats.
Yea, Ethan figured it out upon meeting up Jim. We saw it in his head but he played along with Jim. Notified Kittridge ahead of time and...."Good morning, Mr. Phelps." Absolute brilliance~
Yeah, this first movie is the most spy twisty turny in its plot. I too was confused by the Ethan/Phelps scene when I was a kid, but have grown to LOVE it. You see Ethan putting all the pieces together in his head, but he is verbally saying the opposite so that he can keep the edge over Phelps.
So confusing, but so brilliantly done!!!! While I love the later M:I films, this one is my personal favorite.
So those types of tilted shots are called " Dutch angles". You see them in a lot of horror and mystery films because they are suppose to represent a sense of Paranoia and unease.
Hey Holden! Just wanted to help clarify something you pointed out - when we learn Jim is alive and he sits down with Ethan, we see Ethan piecing together what's going on and discovers Jim is the mole...but Jim doesn't know Ethan has figured it out. We get to see Ethan's thought process, but he's just playing along pretending to believe Jim that Kittredge is the mole. That's why Ethan talks about Job to Jim like it's a different person. Ethan doesn't want to let on that he knows the truth. It's actually one of my favorite scenes where the subtext adds some nice tension. Anyway, love your reactions and can't wait to continue the series with you guys!! 😁
Some fun trivia, mission impossible was the very first property that Tom Cruise and his production company purchased. So they made this movie and he started it. They still own the property and likely always will. Also Jon Voight's character was the star of the mission impossible show in the 50s.
Just wanted to answer Holden's little question : The "bullet train" they climb onto towards the end is the French "TGV" (stands for Train Grande Vitesse, litteraly translated : High Speed Train) and it goes up to 300 km/h (186 miles per hour) with passengers and 575 km/h (357 miles per hour) without anyone onboard. It's like a video game fast travel ability in France since every major city has a TGV station.
I loved watching the wife get so involved in the suspense that she was wound up and almost shaking
I used to watch the reruns of the 60’s TV series as a kid and then the follow-up series in the 90’s. The movies are great too!😊

Back in 2008 in my sophomore year in high school, when Quantum of Solace came out, I took a girl to go watch it but I had never watched any 007 movies - not even the previous Casino Royale. To show her how excited I was, I sent her the theme song and was so pumped. She never said anything but I found out years later that I sent her the Mission Impossible theme instead.
I think about that all the time.
If you had sent her the QoS theme she probably would never have spoken to you again.

I read somewhere, that Kristin Scott Thomas (Sarah), when asked about the fact that she died so soon in the movie, said something like "I died on page 27, but I died in the arms of Tom Cruise, so it was worth it".
I loved this tv show as a kid. From memory the music is from that. I think they had a rotating cast and then the boss (who was consistent in all episodes) would reveal which skills they would need for mission and therefore who was in the crew.
I love in Prague so that “That’s pretty” made me happy haha. Some of Ghost Protocol was actually also shot in Prague, and there a couple of czech actors in the movie.
Fun movie fact, the White Widow in MI6: Fallout, is Max's daughter. She monologues about her mother briefly in that film.
I remember my father watching the TV show when I was little. While I was too young to understand what was going on, I remembered the theme song, the _"this tape would self destruction in X-seconds"_ and that the main guy would always select a team of agents (often different) that might be best for that mission.
When I saw this in theaters as a teen, I was disappointed, and even said to friends that I felt it was Tom Cruise wanting to do his James Bond thing, instead of making a movie about a team to try and solve the problem (often times by setting up someone else, so it couldn't be traced back to them).
Hi Holden & Jenn, loving the fact your doing this series, they just get better and better. I’ve a personal love for MI 2, John Woo is the director (of Face/Off fame) and main bad guy played by Scottish actor called Dougray Scott who without spoiling anything when he says Hunt you can almost imagine he’s meaning another word (used a lot in Scotland) that rhymes with Hunt, I’ll let you guess it and not type here. If you notice the LACK of gunplay. They wanted to be true to the old TV show that never had guns in it. They only had one shot in the whole movie for a Tom Cruise action movie. The other movies are all JUST as fun. Hope you react to them all.......

- Holden... Ethan immediately knew it was Jim, so he decided to play along and pretend Job was someone else, both, to expose Jim, AND to figure out if Jim's wife was in on it.
- That WAS the theme from the original 60s TV show. In that show, Jim Phelps was the lead (played by the head pilot from the AIRPLANE movies), so some folx were upset that he turned out to be the villain in this movie. And that fact probably helped fool some viewers who were fans of the old show.

Important to remember it was 1995, as far as some of the critique's about the technology and what not. Also I'd never been in a more silent movie theatre than during the white room break in scene. Also Tom Cruise had this and Jerry Maguire release the same year. Both mega hits.
A Quiet Place
It’s not a bullet train, it’s the eurostar: a train that connects London to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. It’s really fast and a trip from London to Paris only takes 2 hours. It passes under the english channel through a tunnel which is why there’s that long underground helicopter scene

@@tomas.lambert they have magnetic levitation trains too now! Where the magnetism is provided by electromagnets with superconductors (requiring cooling the metal to very low temperatures).
I had a VHS of this movie, and it was always in the helicopter jump part. I would put the movie just to see “red light! Green light!” 💥. To me, that jump from the helicopter back to the train was the coolest thing.
The theme was written by a guy named Lalo Schifren for the original television series that premiered in 1966.
the silver and blue color scheme would indicate a french TGV Atlantique train - however there are numerous problems with this scene - TGV's have on overhead wire that they get power from which isn't shown in the movie. The Atlantique doesn't go through the Chunnel, only specific trains go through it, including a car shuttle train, electric freight trains, and a specific type of TGV designed for multi-power source and Chunnel operations. The Chunnel tunnels are one way - they don't share a tunnel bore with oncoming traffic. And they left out all the Chunnel rail yard and control infrastructure nearby the Chunnel entrances. The TGVs in general have a max operating speed of about 186 mph, but I think the Chunnel has a slightly lower speed limit.
at 13:20 they told the old lady to keep vacuuming cause it would be strange that she would suddenly stop. as they thought eathan was in the room and as a secret agent he would notice these type of irregularities.
Jen, catching the clues before the reveals and seeing her confirming look in the reveals, was awesome...

The bridge the train goes across is just outside village i grew up in. Was big deal at the time it was filmed. In all the papers and local press. Always loved this film
The funny part is that the team who raided Max hotelroom with Kittridge is the actual team from the TV-show Mission Impossible.
I think Holden’s analogy of Alien vs Aliens is apt. There’s a huge tonal shift from campy thriller (more true to the original series) to high stakes action movie franchise after this one. I love this movie, the performances and above all how De Palma it feels. I saw both this and the second in the theater but after that I saw the third on cable and I was out. They just are over the top and clearly just exist so Tom Cruise can show how fearless he is with an ever escalating series of stunts from film to film and the story suffers as a result.

Except for 2. 2 is the black sheep of the MI family. Its okay though (Great Soundtrack personally) but after 3 and especially 4, this franchise just kept getting bigger and better. Its rare these days to see that in a franchise for you to be able to say the next one was just as good or better than the last one.
The Mission Impossible Theme is the opening credits theme from the 1972 tv show that went on for 7 seasons.

One of my favorite directors Brian de Palma started this movie franchise that is based on the TV show that began in the 60s. Tom Cruise is the most underrated actor in the world. Check out both of their resumes. You have probably seen most of them. If not, watch the untouchables, Carrie, body double, scarface, femme fatale, cocktail, jerry McGuire, a few good men, vanilla sky, far and away, knight and day, edge of tomorrow, jack reacher, the last samurai, for starters.😮😊
Mission Impossible was a TV series that was extremely successful in the early seventies. The Tom Cruise movie version of the series pays homage by using the original theme song (not original recording) and stylized series opening sequence. That begins with a fuse lit and rapid fire scenes related to that specific episode/story while the theme song plays out. All these Mission Impossible movies maintain a similar stylistic opening as the TV series.
Jen keeps bringing 2023 computer technology into a 30-year-old movie action scene centered around a fictional computer.

Based on the '60s hit TV series of the same name - the game-changer was making Jim Phelps (the show's hero played by Peter Graves) the villain/mole - and the theme was from the show as well. Cruise delivers the goods and top notch director Brian DePalma helps a franchise debut with satisfying smarts & skills. Also: famed make-up wiz Rob Bottin (THE THING/TOTAL RECALL/ROBOCOP) created the masks used in the twists of the plot (which also was a staple of the TV series).

If I'm understanding your criticisms about Ethan referencing "Job" when talking to Max, of course before the big Gideons twist was revealed, Ethan didn't know Jim was actually Job. That's the exact moment he figured it out. Then the reason he kept referring to him as Job even after that is he didn't want to give away to Max that he knew about Jim because he needed them to stay oblivious so that Ethan could expose Jim being alive to Kittredge.
This movie is so surprisingly good. This was an era when every other TV show from the 1960s got a movie remake. Most were terrible, with three exceptions: The Brady Bunch Movie (for going satirical with it), The Fugitive, and this one. All the others (and there are many) have been forgotten.

Staples for me growing up, it was James Bond, Mission Impossible, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and The Saint. I really hope (since there's only one of each to get to) either at the end or during this series, you watch Man from uncle (Henry Cavill connection) as well as the 90's awesome cheese The Saint, with Val Kilmer.

As a fan of the original series, I was originally incensed that they made Jim Phelps the villain in this adaptation. But time and perspective have made me realize that it was necessary to drive the plot twists, and establish Cruise's Ethan Hunt as the new team leader for the franchise going forward. But wow, a 10 rating from Jen!? Didn't see that coming.

There was a 60 series. Jon Voights character was the maim character in that series. Most of the main cast in the series are the main team that die in the movie to make way for the new character, Ethan Hunt, and a new era for Mission Impossible. Fans of the original series hated this but it made it easier for the creators to make a show that wasn't tied down by the original show while keeping it in the same universe

This is isn't my FAVORITE franchise, exactly...but I feel it's my IDEAL franchise. Cool gadgets, good twists, great stunts, minimal sappiness. I always enjoy the clockwork plotting and the slick execution of the team's strategy. My favorite in the series is the third movie, as it's a closer look at Ethan's personal life. The upcoming 7th movie is high on my list of 2023 must-sees.

One of the biggest surprises about this movie was the fact that the character Jim Phelps was the main character of the TV Show on which this movie was based. No one would have expected him to be the villain.

I remember not liking this movie when it came out. The mission impossible tv series was always an ensemble effort and this always felt more like a James Bond movie to me. Because if this I’ve never seen any of the others.
