Douglas Manifold: The sprinklers tested are ESFR pendent sprinklers, not a standard spray sprinkler .ESFR sprinklers have listings and NFPA-13 installation standards for deflector distances greater than 12 inches from the ceiling deck. Typically ESFR sprinkler piping is much greater diameter than piping for standard type sprinklers; the greater deflector distance is usually required given the much larger pipe and ESFR sprinkler. I think the requirement you are referring to is for standard sprinklers.

A Fog pattern has to be tight enough to penetrate the energy of the flames and wind while still covering as big an area as possible. The type of nozzle in a room as to be chosen by the use of the room and it's contents/furnishings. This showed that this room needed a tighter pattern and other locations to deal with this pile of pallets. One size does Not fit all when your life or possessions are at stake.
This fire year is about useless really. This is why FM is the leader in testing people. Show me racks. Show me fire in those racks. Show me delay in the fire being contained due to obstruction....
