    I discovered The Young Ones when it came to America on Mtv. I became obsessed with it, and it was a major part of my childhood. I'm so sad to hear these amazing people weren't compensated properly for the U.S. run. In addition to running the episodes, Mtv used TONS of clips from the show for promos, commercials for other shows, bumpers, etc. for years.

    Why has nobody mentioned that Mike represented the 1950s, Neil the 60s. Vyvyan the 70s and Rik the 80s? Seems obvious to me.

      @@That_Random_Bloke Totally agreed, great observation. -Having said that, according to the Young Ones book 'Bachelor Boys', Mike is painted as a fan of Santana, which puts him more in the 70s. Whatever way, Rick is the only personification of early-80s mores..

      Anybody 'can' represent almost anything, I've heard the 'family' theory as well, Mike the dad, Neil the mom, and the two kids. But its true, they each seem to represent that pretty well. Mike and the fifties is the hardest to categorize, but finding buddy holly and his authoritarian father figure kind of fits into that. But I'm not sure just how far that representation can be stretched, maybe they weren't 'representatives' of anything. But if somebody were going to do a research study on it, that would be a good one to follow up.

    I like Peter Richardson with the other three in the Comic Strip but I think Christopher Ryan plays Mike perfectly. Part of the reason why is Christopher Ryan obviously is a lot shorter than the other three who almost tower over him but they have such huge respect for him so on a mature and intellectual level he is much more bigger than them.

    • @briane5706
      @briane5706 Год назад +1

      They all speak very highly of Christopher Ryan. Lise Mayer says they were in awe of him as he is a “real actor”. Nigel and Alexei agreed he was the solid guy that the rest could be silly. Adrian says he’s a brilliant performer. Ironically it’s Ryan himself that underestimated how good he was.

He has much fonder memories of The Comic Strip.

    Americans wanting to recreate sublime, typically British comedy series like The Young Ones or The Office; and wanting the characters to be "more nice".. tells you how much they're afraid of subversive, gritty, dark humor and cringe. I find that fascinating from a cultural differences point of view.

      @@SundaeRoastactually it is with commercial networks but not so much with subscription services.
      I've watched countless documentaries about sitcoms and the amount of times they get notes from the network where they want to change a character trait to be more likeable or even recast to appeal to a different demographic that would please some of their sponsors as that's how they make their money.
      With subscription companies like HBO they tend to give creators freedom

  • @Polemicist0

    There were in fact three co-scriptwriters to the television sitcom series, The Young Ones, that was originally aired on the BBC Two channel during 1982 and 1984.
    The highly significant contributor and very influential third co-writer was Benjamin Elton. Unsurprisingly, both Alexei Sayle and Lise Mayer are, nowadays, rather pathetically, attempting to airbrush history, by deliberately pretending that this never ever actually happened.
