Loved The Young Ones. I still occasionally recite "Revolutionary biscuits of Italy, rise up out of your box. You have nothing to lose but your wafers, yum yum yum yum yum". Just for the hell of it. Get some funny looks so it's always worth it. 👌

Great to hear Lise. She's the real unsung hero of The Young Ones. Looking back, it's amazing how many of the gags appealed to young kids. I remember loving SPG headbutting the teddybear and Rick's Pollution Poem.
To add to the list of famous cameos, what about the late, great Dave Rappaport?

Really enjoyed this episode on the young ones, and I think Lise should definitely have a binge watch of the Young Ones. It's easier to enjoy your own work when you have some distance.
But I can fully understand the struggle of cutting down the script to make it fit an episode. There was always so much going on.
When The Young ones came out, there was nothing like it, and it was not just the writing and acting, but as mentioned also the use of special effects and props that made it.
Would not mind a second episode at all.

I was 12 and it caused so many 'did you see that last night?' moments at school - one of the biggest was after Alexei had been on wiith Radical Posture (episode Oil), loads of idiots going round school next day going 'Woo!'

Great episode generally, but I really loved hearing about you doing Kung Fu. I do Choy Li Fut myself, a Southern style developed from three of the Five Animal styles. I was particularly interested to hear you do White Crane style, the only style of Martial Art I have ever been much interested in learning, mainly because it is so very different from my own style but also as a small person, it might benefit me. There is no White Crane style in the ancestry of Choy Li Fut as far as I can ascertain. It's not commonly taught in the UK, so I'm really pleased to find out it is. You can see examples of Choy Li Fut forms on my channel.

The core cast of The Young Ones was basically an amalgamation of two acts from the Comic Strip club - "20th Century Coyote" (Rik Mayall & Adrian Edmondson) and "The Outer Limits" (Nigel Planer & Peter Richardson). Peter Richardson used to play a cool guy sort of character on stage and he was supposed to be Mike, but this didn't happen because he and Young Ones producer Paul Jackson didn't get on. Lise mentions about 40:30 into the episode here that Keith Allen and Timothy Spall were up for the role of Mike. I read somewhere that Ben Elton was keen to play Mike but the BBC didn't like that idea, I think they weren't impressed by his acting abilities. Christopher Ryan got the job and if he seems like an odd fit, it's because he was a "legit" actor in a jobbing role rather than a guy from the alternative comedy scene (as Rik, Ade, and Nigel were).
I agree that Chris is obviously playing a lot younger than he is but I actually think he's underrated in The Young Ones. Mike's not written or played as outrageously as the other three characters (he's the only one who could pass as a reasonably normal guy) but I think he provides some balance, a grounded centre for the others to work off. And he does get quite a few good lines. As to what his character is supposed to be, it's usually assumed that the four characters are broadly representative of a succession of decades - Mike is the 1950s Fonzie type, Neil is the 1960s hippie type, Vyvyan is the 1970s punk type, and Rik is the 1980s anti-Thatcher student type. It could be argued that Mike is less potent comedically because he's signifying an archetype that was far older older and less culturally-relevant by the time the 1980s had rolled around.
