    Any time people talk about how Chainsaw Man is a tragedy, part of me can't help but agree... mostly. The difference, in my mind, is that Chainsaw Man uses subtlely to preach hope. No matter the tragedy that happens, there is a glimmer of hope for the world to be better tomorrow. That's how I interpreted Denji's willingness to fight Makima at the end. The series is hopelessly hopeful.

    • @monsterhunterayame4941
      @monsterhunterayame4941 3 месяца назад +24

      To expand on this, that's another way that Makima is Denji's opposite. She has no hope for tomorrow, so she will remove all the pain, the suffering, the bad movies from the world so it can be better tomorrow. Because she doesn't believe it can be better on its own, while not seeing that in doing so she would remove the beauty from the world.

      @@gabrielleite32 are you talking about when the Falling devil shows up & Asa is ready to give up but Denji gives his speech about life being mostly a sh¡t sandwich but that's okay because he has something to look forward to? That's what I was thinking of

      @@gabrielleite32 @gabrielleite32 I'm sorry to hear that. I'm doing better now, but I've struggled with depression & anxiety my whole life so i definitely know how it is. But I'm glad you were able to find some solace in Denji's heartfelt speech/plea
      And I'd love to see this channel cover that part at some point & have him fill in the speech bubble with what Denji really means when he says sex is the thing that keeps him going. It probably be something similar to the first time, i.e. he really just wants to find & maintain a real & meaningful connection to someone. Which is also what I think Asa wants.
      In the same scene, she says she's fine with it all ending though she would've like to experience something just one time. And I think that's what she was talking about too, finding a meaningful relationship. They just have slightly different ways of expressing that desire 😅
      But ya, I love CSM & the subtle yet profound moments of hope we get from time to time, in between all the large helpings of shit sandwiches. Unfortunately, it's very relatable 😁

    One of my favorite aspects of Makima's end is how Denji wouldn't have been able to breach the contract keeping her alive if she hadn't fostered that unhealthy love from grooming and destroying his sense of self.
    Had she cared for Denji in an genuine and even slightly more humane way, no one could have stopped her. She wouldn't have lost control of her plan if she didn't try controlling him in the way she did.
    The excessive authority Makima strived for groomed Denji into the ultimate refutement of it.

  • @mr.nicehat7525

    When Denji asks about the bad movies, I always recall the chapter where Denji sat next to Kobeni and she told him that a normal life is a life with highs and lows. I really love that moment, and I really feel like in that moment, with a character that atleast I never suspected to give Denji advice, a switch flipped in Denji's mind. Like he finally understood what he was trying to achieve. A normal life.
    Great vid

    Another thing I love about Denji's continued love for Makima, is that in the context of Denji's world, she kind of represents life itself. Life can give you so much, and in the blink of an eye, life can take it all away again. Life can make you and destroy you all the same and Denji continues to love Makima because he has learned to truly love life, regardless of all the pain and suffering it can put you through. He is able to accept that life is pain and peace all at once, something truly human.

    The metaphor of good movies and bad movies is absolutely genius. As a wise man once said, "No rain, no rainbow". You gotta take the good with the bad. Because if Denji had never been through such hardships, he never would have known how good jam on toast, a warm bath and touching breasts would feel. You need to experience sadness to truly appreciate how good happiness can make you feel.
    That's what makes Chainsaw Man one of the best stories I've ever read from a literary standpoint (I don't know if this is the right word) through its use of imagery and metaphor between cats, dogs, doors and bad movies.
    Really great video man. I've watched a few now and they are incredible. I've noticed since watching your videos, my English grades have improved (60% on the last test. I'm delighted). So maybe it's a good idea to keep watching. Keep up the amazing work!

    i think you also missed the point that denji knows the movie he loved is a bad movie because there were no other people were watching it while he enjoyed it despite it being bad. this is also reflected in the ending when he says he still loves makima despite everything thats happened.
    but makima wanting to make a world without bad movies means that she is rejecting denji, and the connection they had during the bad movie. she was unable to see what they had in that moment while he knew the whole time what they had then, which was what makima says she wanted all along but she doesnt understand it.

    I haven't watched the video yet, but I'll answer my opinion about the title, the need for bad movies is like a phase of Syndrome, from the movie The Incredibles
    "When everybody is Super, no one will be"
    If all movies are good, none will be truly good. We won't have the same feeling of watching a good movie because we won't know the difference between what is bad and what is good. It will be meaningless

Fujimoto is a geniys.

    Fujimoto is such an excellent writer. The fact that we had two instances of absolute shock, revolving makimas character is truly astonishing and not many writers can do that the “makima is listening” panel and her explaining the plan are so well built up that you feel the impact of that information. Once she explains why she did everything, it makes you immediately think back to all of the chapters you’ve read and she’s been manipulating everything. Even in the very early chapters when she’s feeding denji soba, he said he would’ve been fine eating then she asked and persist, and that forces him to bark like a dog. She has been manipulating and taking advantage of this kid since the moment he saw her. And her explanation of simply wanted to break the contract ties everything together perfectly.

  • @ToeTruck1958
    @ToeTruck1958 2 месяца назад +4

    I think, like most things in chainsaw man, Denji continuing to love Makima, even after all the things she did to him, and as he eats her to kill her for good, seems silly at first, almost contradictory, why does this boy who was tortured by this woman still love her? It seems like Makima may have still won an emotional battle regardless, like if batman ever killed the joker, but I think despite loving your abuser being a bad decision in the real world, his love despite everything is his truest victory against her. He is able to overcome all the pain she put him through, and still cherish the memories he did not share with her, but had with her. It means he can overcome the grief of killing Aki, of watching Power get murdered in front of him. Makima wanted him to be consumed by grief and pain, and him choosing to not be consumed by hate for her, to accept the crappy movies he had to watch, means that she failed and Denji succeeded.

    I've had a similar experience akin to Denji with Makima, with me only really being loved recently around a year ago. I met a woman who exploited what my skewed vision of love was due to childhood trauma I was subject to, and used it for her own sense of pleasure. It gets to a point where it breaks you down to where you want to be free of all responsibility, or, "I don't want to think for myself anymore." You see this stronger person and realize that, if you just give yourself to them, you can be free of all of life's obligations. It's such a hard thing to break out of that mindset, but after mulling it over, I decided I wanted to live for myself. Even if life throws hard decisions my way, or even if I don't know what love may be, I won't let another person define it for me. That's what, in my eyes, Denji is. His story is one of a sense of individuality and the formation of self respect. Never let another person control your entire being.

      I probably should have been more clear on that for sure, but I think the messaging of their dynamic and Makima’s goals in relation to chapter 39 still works perfectly fine. Since Pochita and Dennis were with each other and unified in both events, the story thematically works the same. But yeah, I could have been more clear for sure

    I can understand english, but ain't really good at expressing myself with it, so please spare me this time:
    Me encantó cómo este video me hizo mucho más sentido después de ver tu reflexión sobre Griffith.
    Al principio estuve un poco a la defensiva, ya que me cuesta empatizar con el discurso sobre la masculinidad víctima debido quizás a mi propio lente femenino y a todas las historias de mujeres muy heridas y a la vez muy enteras, fuertes y maduras que me rodean (que no siento que sea el caso de la mayoría de los hombres que conozco, y los culpo por eso, desde mi propia carencia e ignorancia). Claramente estaba equivocada y esto va mucho más allá de una lucha de género.
    En un momento incluso pensé (antes que lo dijeras) que lo ideal era aspirar a ser como Makima y entrenar al perro, hacerlo humano, controlarlo; pero claro, no creo que puedas sentir una pizca de amor (vínculo? conexión?) con un ser al que no le tienes ni el más mínimo respeto (por esto se me hace muy gracioso que, al final, Makima se convierta en esta niña "indefensa" que solo necesita abrazos. Jajaja, qué generosos!).
    Creo que mi conclusión después de leer el manga, no habiendo hecho ni la mitad del trabajo de reflexión que hiciste tú y estando profundamente equivocada en varias cosas, fue más o menos la misma que la tuya, y opino que eso es lo que consigue una buena obra de arte. A pesar de que encarna muchos de los aspectos que me parecen más grotescos del género masculino, lo que siento por Denji es sincera ternura, y ciertamente estuve animándolo en secreto (de mí misma) desde los primeros capítulos (hasta le habría ofrecido dejarle tocar mis boobs si con eso lograba consolarlo un poco, qué bueno que al final la cosa no iba ni cerca por ese camino D:).
    Todos queremos ser amados y, quizás también todos, nos desviamos del objetivo persiguiendo lo que creemos que nos hará felices y completos. Ver tu video me hizo darme cuenta de que en algún punto también estoy perdida y también muchas veces he querido ser el perro. Así que, antes de retomar La Búsqueda, me detengo un momento con este comentario para agradecerte :)
