- In this video, I explain how to open Earthbound's Debug Menu on the recently released Nintendo Switch version of Earthbound. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments! I'll respond as fast as I can.

For some reason every time i do the sl and sr bit it never shows the ho oh screen no matter how fast i press the only thing that shows up is either no problem here or qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq then QoA and a bunch of weird symbols and then the text box closes automatically
Nvm i was using CRT filter and it turns out ness's shadow was 1 pixel too far

@@BlouePickdMan Yeah, unfortunately it's completely random and there's no way to really control it. How fast you press the buttons won't affect your outcome.
The fact that you're getting q spam actually means you're doing it right, so keep at it.

I love how after clearing magicant, its completely possible to just remove ness from your party and even beat the entire rest of the game without him including the post game sequence, just don't try to return Paula or else the game turns into a shitty creepypasta

While i was attempting to do this i managed to corrupt the game in a way that warps me to the broken mani mani statue in Jackie's cafe, and im not able to interact with anything without freezing in place. Though pressing A a bunch sent me to the sea of eden with my entire party and the camera man taking a picture after i walk a few steps. after the camera man took ness's picture the screen goes black and says jeff fixed something up and the game freezes up after that.
What in the world!? That's hilarious
Question though, is there a way to re-access the debug menu after you’ve already accessed it? Or do you have to go back to Onett and redo all these steps? For example: I accessed the debug as soon as I could, now have progressed the story to where I have Paula with me but now I wanna max out her stats and gear.
Unfortunately, you're gonna have to go back to Onett and redo all of the steps.
Chances are it'll take a lot less time though since you have a better idea of what you're doing.
Theoretically, you could perform the Check Area Glitch in any spot that is an outer corner of a room that touches the edge of the game map, such as that one spot in the Threed Tent.
Would you pls do a video on the debug menu itself?? All the inputs you can do

I'm playing it on the Switch, I checked the corner for about 30 minutes and it came up with a bunch of U's followed by a lowercase L, and then, without any tricky frame perfect inputs, the debug menu opened 🐧
I have no idea how I skipped the need to stress over those frame perfect inputs, but I'm not complaining
That's happened to me before. I wish there was a way to consistently do it, but it seems completely random.

@@Nillerz It was pretty lucky, though immediately unlucky by the fact that exiting it seems impossible for the meantime, even after killing all of my party members (No glitchy game over screen came up)

I'm trying to open the debug menu but failed
Whenever I try to do the wall clip ness just moves out of position and I’m in the right spot why is it pushing me out of position

Question. I'm using the pro controllers and I have two of them, I've been holding right bumper or Y on the second controller and pressing left bumper / check repeatedly. I'm also using the same alignment that you suggested, yet it's not working. What am I supposed to do?
It's possible you're just getting unlucky. What exactly isn't working?
If you're getting garbage text (random symbols+letters, qqqq...) then you're doing it right.
Ive been getting the same thing but at the end when it did the full caps alphabet the menu just closes itself

@@BlouePickdMan what i did (still havent gotten into debug menu, just the empty textbox)is im pretty sure i just mashed buttons when it say QA (aka right after the "endless q's") and eventually it worked, but in my attempts ive discovered that you can "softlock" yourself so be careful and make savestates

So this is all well and good, though I've come across another variation when the text just does U with and L at the end. This seems to instantly bring up the debug menu without the frame perfect inputs. However upon adding items into my inventory and trying to close the menu the sprites either become glitchy or in the case of teleporting yourself to location can crash the game.
My main question is how do you got about exiting the debug menu without crashing the game or jumbling the sprites?
I've never seen the U and L thing before! I wonder if that's what happens when you get the debug menu randomly- was it a consistent thing?
As for exiting the debug menu, your best bet is IDU > ONtT. This'll teleport you straight to Onett, but it's possible for the game to crash- unfortunately you're going to have to get a little lucky.
Once you teleport, a textbox with garbage text should show up. Don't move, moving will crash the game. Keep advancing the textbox until it disappears, then walk into the nearest door. The game should run as normal now.

@@Nillerz I'll have to give the try of not moving then, though it wasn't as consistent as I hope it to be, as I did get the endless Q's a few times before the text changed to the U and L.

I know it's been a while, but I just discovered a new trick if that's not working for you- you can kill Ness within the debug menu and the game will take you back to your last save with all of your items. All you have to do is TKSyZyUTI > Ness > DIY (And repeat for other party members if you need to). This will diamondize him, cause a glitchy game over screen, and teleport you back to your last save. It's 100% consistent (from my testing) and lets you keep all your items!
Sorry for taking a minute to figure something out, but I hope this helps!
@@Nillerz editing your party leaves their stat boxes on screen so you'll have to save and reset or wipe out before they'll go away
@@Nillerz So it's been a while since my lat comment, though I found out the reason for the U and L thing, which happened when I had all four party members at the time, and was past Summers (when Poo joins the party). Giving a retry with just Ness at the start although I wonder if it's been patched out since then.
I just found your video and was happy to see that it's possible to access the debug menu on the Switch version, but I have to ask: Do you have a guide on how to access it with a Switch Lite?
I do not, but the process is almost the exact same. Just hook up an extra controller and use the lite as 1p and the other controller as 2p.
If you don't have an extra controller, it's possible to get it through pure chance in the same location if you'd like to try your luck. I haven't done it myself though so I'm not sure what the odds are.
Me and my gf had to do this like 6 times and we finally got it!

You can do use this to cheat in Sword of Kings, so you are not overleveled by the time you get it. Its not a superweapon, its just Poos only weapon.
If you are going Sok, cheat it in and dont feel bad, or ruin the rest of the game because its way too easy!
idk if I'm doing it right. I press the buttons and the box shows up scrolling a bunch of q's with 0a at the end then capital qa and when I press a its scrolls bunch of letters and the box disappears 😒

I accidentally closed the black text box. What do I do?
Do you know if the menu can be accessed at any point of the game or if there's some sort of deadline? I'm at the endgame where Onett has been taken over and I've gotten up to the point with the empty text box, but for the life of me i can't get the debug menu open, even after trying with different controllers and following along with clips of successful attempts.

Pretty darn rare. I haven’t done it myself, so I can’t tell you from personal experience, but based on what I’ve seen the chances are pretty low.
Definitely not impossible, though.

I got this glitch down pretty well. But during the part when I need to actually open the debug menu, all it does is bring up a window with an arrow on the top left corner. What am I doing wrong?

I have been trying the final step a few hours everyday for 4 days I just can't get the timing right with the fps. Talk about a migrane.
For anyone that got a triangle in the top left: that is a complete softlock and you’ll have to reload
I'm having a lot of trouble getting the text box to work the way I want it to. I used to toy around with the check glitch a long time ago and it never took this long. But I also never held R on controller 2 either. I have two controllers connected but controller 2 can control Ness, is that normal? They are definitely controller 1 and controller 2, and the snes app says two controllers connected, so I dont think I'm doing anything wrong there.
I also definitely have Ness in the right spot. But '20 minutes' is so far back in my past I would have loved for this to have just taken 40 minutes honestly. Is there something different about the switch version that makes this harder to trigger?
curious, is there any way to get out of the corner when you exit the debug mode? i’m stuck in there. i also have a leftover skip sandwich, if that helps.
After exiting the debug menu, I'm pretty sure you're stuck.
As far as I know, the only way to exit that area is using the debug menu to teleport out (IDU>ONtT).

mmkay, random side note, when i try to do it in mother 2, there’s music changes that seem to occur randomly? it’s changed from the onett theme, to silence, to the naming theme.

Chances are you have the timing as close as humanly possible, but are just a couple frames off every time. Keep at it, at this point it's just luck.

That's pretty common. The fact that you're getting that means you're doing it right. There's no chance of getting the blank textbox after the qs though, so reload your savestate as soon as you see them.
Hmm.. no matter what I do or how fast I do it, I can't seem to clip through the wall in Step 2. I am in the right spot and I do clip in a couple pixels but that's it.
Make sure you're pressing left as well. If this doesn't work, you might need to just walk away and reset your position. This has happened to me too.
I got the “register your name” screen for some reason

You can! First go to "GtZStTI", then to "GtZKWER" and enter "35". It should go straight to your inventory!

There's a couple different ways- IDU will let you teleport to any area (ONtT is Onett if that's where you're going), or you can use TKSyZyUTI, select all your party members and use DIY to diamondize them, killing them and returning you to your last save after exiting the debug menu.
It sounds like pressing B won't close the menu though, so I think IDU is your best bet.
Or if IDU isn't working, try the TKSyZyUTI method.

Hey! I'm a bit late to this video, but I still have a question
After I've done all the stuff I wanted to do in the debug menu, can I leave without negative consequences? (e.g. constant garbage textboxes, broken sprites, random flags set that I likely wouldn't want to be set, all the aforementioned stuff permanently being saved on my file, the save file itself dying or corrupting)
I've seen Chuggaaconroy's video on the glitch and every time he left the menu he'd get screwed over by glitch textboxes that would strain performance and trap him in Jackie's Cafe, along with permanent glitchiness
You can! The best way to do it is to use TKSyZyUTI and then DIY to diamondize your party members. After that, mash B to exit the menu and a glitched-out game over screen should appear, but will function normally. Select continue and you will be at your last save point with all of your items and any changes you made with the menu.

I'm trying to do this on an emulator (bsnes, version 115) and I can't seem to do it
i reached the empty textbox and i have savestated on it. now I'm supposed to press a 2P button then press down-right-a-b-y but i can't do it
i press the 2p button (down, which is assigned to my T key) then down-right-a-b-y (which are assigned to down, right, c, x, v) as fast as i can (probably not 13 frames tho)
unfortunately it doesn't bring me to debug, instead i get more glitch text (which changes depending on what inputs were accepted? dunno)
i think this is because b and a dismiss the textbox and don't let me use l (assigned to z) to dismiss it

@@BetterCallBigShotAutos I think your problem is that you're pressing down-right-a-b-y after pressing the 2p button. The 2p button should be pressed WHILE holding down-right and Y, and after the 2p button is pressed you should press A+B (while still holding down-right and Y).
If that's not the problem, make sure that your A+B press isn't as soon as you can- I think that 13 frames is longer than you think. There should be sometime between the 2p press and the 1p press.

What is "R" on the 2p controller? Am I just moving the joystick right on that, or something else?
"R" as in the button. "SR" if you're using two single joycons.
If you're talking about AndyPerfect's inputs, the "D R" on the left means Down-Right on the first player controller and the "R" on the right means the "R" button on the second player controller .

@@benjitsux2425 He's pressing R instead of Y, which also works (you can actually press any button as long as it doesn't advance the textbox).

It's possible to get the debug menu, yes, but there's no consistent way to do it and it's entirely luck based. Not sure what the chances are but probably not worth your time.
He says y when he’s literally pressing b not very good on the last step

It can take quite a long time. It took me around 20 minutes when filming this video and probably double that time the first time I tried to do this.
If there's delay between when you press "SL" and the "No problem here" textbox shows up, you're probably doing it right. "q" spam can either be super frequent or not seen at all, it's incredibly inconsistent.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean in that last part- do you mean when you get garbage text, do you have to keep advancing to get the blank textbox? If so, then yes, you do. If all you get is "No problem here", however, you don't need to spam "SL". Just once to open it and once to close it.

Yo nillerz can i use 2 pro controllers
When i do this, there is an Arrow on the left side of the text box. Nothing works exept b, and that Just spews out garbage before placing an Arrow top right of my screen. Dont know what i did wrong
Also, pressing ZL again crashes the game, just for extra measure

You're not doing anything wrong, it's unfortunately just a random thing that can happen when trying to get the blank text box.
The fact that that happened actually means you're doing it right! Keep at it, it can take a while.

I don’t really understand how to count frames- is there like a time interval I should follow??
Unfortunately, frames can't really be counted by humans, so there's no real way to know the timing without looking at it.
The inputs displayed at 3:00 are what you want to follow (I looped it a twice) and after watching that part a few times you should get a feel for the timing.
Ideally, you are able to record the second-long clip of the inputs with your phone, watch the clip and do the inputs at the same time.
If you want to know the specifics, one frame is 1/60 of a second (in Earthbound and other games that run at 60fps) so the wait between releasing "R" and pressing "A"+"B" is 11/60 or 13/60 of a second, which, again, is pretty much impossible to actually know how long that is.
It's all just a feel thing. Once you find a comfortable position to view the clip and do the inputs at the same time, you'll be rolling.

It's technically possible to get the debug menu by complete chance just from checking the out-of-bounds area, but the chances are incredibly low and I wouldn't recommend it.

It sounds like you’re doing inputs after q spam. The inputs should be performed before. If you get q spam, there’s no hope of the text box showing up after, so just reload your save state.

Im not asking for help but when i tried to do it the down arrow appeared in the top left corner and then after a few seconds, the screen went black and a repetitive noise is now playing. I know how to fix this.
Also, i got a HO spam and then after, it said “•Ness chewed a piece of bubble gum, but it wasn’t as satisfying as food.” Is this normal?
Yeah, it’s not uncommon to get random dialogue. I’ve gotten a few hints from the Hint Man before.

As long as you have another controller, yup! The lite should be your first player and the other controller should be your second player.

It’ll still work! You’ll just need some additional accessories like a pro controller or a joycon.
Although some people have been saying that they can no longer get the menu open on switch. I haven’t been able to re-test this out myself though.
How were you able to load the save state using only 1 controller at 2:43?
You can use - and ZL or + and ZR, depending on the joycon.
Also how does one change the rng so that the qs don’t appear
I guess if you wanted to try and manipulate the RNG, you could open and close the "A" and "B" menus a few times. If there's a consistent way to manipulate the RNG to get the blank text box first try, I'm not aware of it.
I'm not even sure if the blank text box is affected by RNG manipulation as reloading a save state and doing the exact same inputs (checking with "L" while holding "R" on 2p controller) gives different results each reload, when it theoretically should give the exact same results since no actions are being preformed that would change the RNG value.
If you're just stuck on the q spam, keep at it. It might take a lot longer than you expect. The fact that you're getting the qs means you're doing it right, so you'll definitely get it eventually.

Yes! Note that you might not be able to get back to where you are in the story, though. Make sure you have a save state beforehand.

At 6:21 how do you follow his inputs? I can’t figure out when to press a and b from his numbers on his video
What I did was record the two seconds or so of his correct inputs with a screen record app so that it showed up in my photos, then used that clip to follow the inputs.
The inputs in my video at 3:00 are his successful attempt (I looped it a couple times) so you can also record that if you want (but I'd recommend checking out Andyperfect's video if you have the chance).
As for the inputs themselves: the "D R" on the left is him holding down-right (southeast) and the "Y" is him holding "Y". When the "R" shows up, that's him pressing "R" on the 2p controller. After he releases "R", "AB" shows up indicating that he pressed "A" and "B".

eh I just prefer spamming the threed tent pillar for an hour until it randomly gets pulled up. Only because I can listen to podcasts during the glitchy journey, though.
ouch now that I’ve actually tried this method, I’m afraid that accessing anything other “No Problem Here” isn’t possible for me after a half an hour of trying (the check delay is there for some reason, though.) Same pixels in the corner and everything. I also started in a new file, with the general timeline you put in the video. Still, nothing

Just make sure you're using two controllers, checking with the first player controller, and holding R with the second player controller.
Other than that, it would appear you're doing it right. I'm sorry that I don't really have an answer.

@@Beebear26474 There's a corner in the bottom right of the Threed Tent that, when positioned correctly and checked, causes some crazy stuff to happen. Look up "Threed Tent Bug", you'll see what I mean.

It requires a lot of patience, but in my experience it was worth it!
Question, does this have to be in a new save file, or can I just stop my adventure and go to Onett to do the glitch? Also is it possible to do with pro controllers because my joycons sr and sl buttons are dead.
You can absolutely stop you're adventure, but do the entire process in a separate save state file (or just make a backup save) as getting back to where you were in the story could be a pain or impossible.
Two pro controllers is totally viable.

@@pikafan100 It's totally possible for it to take hours. It took me 4-5 hours my first time.
If you're unable to get the blank textbox, you might be doing something wrong. If you're just having trouble with the inputs though, you're probably doing it right but your timing's a bit off.
Make sure you're timing the inputs how they're timed at 3:00.

"q" spam is unfortunately a random thing that can occur when trying to get the blank text box. The fact that you're getting "q" spam actually means you're doing it right.
Keep at it, it might take longer than you expect. One thing to note is that (from my experience) it's impossible to get the blank textbox after the "q" spam, so if possible immediately reload your save state as soon as you see the "q"s.

Is it possible on the switch lite?
Yup, as long as you have a second controller. I don't have a lite myself to try it out but the lite should be able to be your first player controller while the other controller is your second player controller.

To get the blank text box, hold R on the 2nd player controller and press L on the second player controller.
To get the menu, hold down-right (southeast) on the 1p controller, then press Y on the 2p controller, release Y, then 11 or 13 frames later press A+B on the 1p controller at the same time (while still holding down-right and Y)

Does the tent glitch work too?
It's possible to get the debug menu from the tent, yes, but as far as I know it's completely random and there's no consistent way to do it (I don't believe stuff with a second controller does anything).

Nope, still works. Unfortunately getting the blank text box is completely random and can take over 30 minutes. If you're getting q spam or garbage text you're doing it right.

If you have an extra controller, you can still open it using the lite as the 1p controller and the other controller as the 2p controller.
It's also entirely possible to get it by pure chance, if you want to try your luck (the odds aren't in your favor, however).
