This video let me more confused. So how I really can know the amount of carbs I can eat that wont take me out of ketosis. This Keto stuff is crazy. Is such a delicate state that is extremely hard for someone to follow specially in the beginning.
I'm down 40lbs watching this guy and Dr. Berg, lots of contradictory stuff but intermittent fasting is the magic... Only eat 2 meals (one at 3 then one before 8pm) and absolutely no snacks ever again. Also, hell with "net carbs" just avoid them all. Net carbs is bull crap IMO. There are a million new low "Net carb" snacks that are just as bad as a bag of chips. If you're rewarding yourself, or out with friends a few times a month, just eat the yummy carbs. All the rest of the time avoid any possible overt carbs. All just my experience!
I agree to this. I think if you just stay to a hefty protein dense and fat dense meal twice a day, you won't be hungry for snacks. But maybe have like a treat, maybe a little keto ice cream at the end of the day just to balance the monotony of keto diet flavor plate.@@aheath7838
For people doing keto. You should maintain your Total Carbs under 50g if beginning, and Net Carb under 35g as well. Later you can push to do Total Carbs under 35g, and Net Carbs under 25g
"Now, blood sugar is one thing, but just so you know, when you're in ketosis, all those sugar alcohols and all those fibers still count towards your overall ketosis number, so even if your overall net carbs are only at 10 grams but your overall total carbs are at 50 or 60, it can still knock you out of that ketogenic state" Do you have any link to where this information is from? I'd like to do some further research, thanks!
I think this is because of most sugar alcohols are partially broken down into simple carbohydrates, for example sorbitol something about 50% fructose, as I know only erythritol doesn't (perhaps mannitol also). Atkins products use maltitol which has glycemic index 36! But instead fiber metabolizes as short-chain fatty acids
Keto Connect this is the most important point he makes...many of the "keto friendly" carb replacement recipes on RUclips, with very low net carbs and high fiber, still knock you out of ketosis.
Keto Connect - love your content! Honestly one of the only channels I also watch on RUclips! So interestingly enough it has to do with soluble vs insoluble fiber. Through my own independent research (and also with alveolar air testing that I've worked on with UCLA) it seems as though soluble fiber does NOT effect ketosis and more than likely has to do with the drawing of Water into the intestinal Tract thereby further halting absorption. Insoluble fiber does have an impact and has been shown as a side note in some studies that I've seen (has to do with the carbon chain still being cleaved off through the first pass). You know my channel and I don't put things up that aren't backed up ( I think literally every video has references) but this one is a bit more on the "what I've discovered" side of things. Side note- shoot me an email, would you be interested in collabing on some videos?
It's still debated. Some of the experts say total some say net. I do net carbs and stay in ketosis, however too many nuts and sugar alcohols can trigger cravings I think. Leafy greens and cruciferous veggies don't have an impact on me but everyone is different. Do what works for you.
@@MoneyStrategiesSOULutions too many nuts I said... people make a lot of "keto goodies" with nuts/nut flours, plus use nuts for snacking. The carbs add up.
Thanks for the great vid, but now I’m really confused LOL. First it sounds like you’re saying you don’t need to look at total carbs, but then you finish it by saying that you do. 🤔
Your total carbs counted should go into your totals for macronutrients. You still need the ~70% fat, ~23% protein, ~7% carbs balance or better to keep your body in fat burning mode. The net carbs is simply tied into blood sugar. Your body doesn't care how the carbs are used, it just measures total carbs consumed.
It just depends just don’t do so many “keto substitutes” for things like bread for example the net carbs maybe to lower but only bc they added a bunch of artificial fiber to it to get get to that number . That could raise your blood sugar to levels that would knock you out of ketosis regardless if your net carbs were under your goal. Focus on net but beware of total carbs when trying new things and you should be okay
If you want to lose fat, you shouldn't compromise your well-being with the keto diet. I recommend getting a personalized diet. I've had great success with the *Agoge diet* for example.
Trouble with that is you have to select grains and starches, you can NOT omit them. I’ve just tried. Agoge is not Keto. Glad for whomever it works for but it will not be for me!
Also, lot of people/brands will say “sugar free” but they just mean refined sugar, instead they’ll use for example dates, honey, maple/agave syrup, and that is just going to kick you out of ketosis (probably)
Well this is frustrating. I've been hearing only that you count net carbs when calculating for keto. If fiber doesn't affect blood sugar, why on earth would it knock you out of ketosis?? Another thing, if what you say here is true, merely reaching the recommended daily grams of fiber would put one way over the 20g of carbs rule of thumb for keto-adaptation. This doesn't make sense to me at all.
It is frustrating. And it actually has to do more with insulin than just blood sugar. Fiber still affects your blood sugar, just not significantly enough to cause a serious effect. However, ketosis is a unique state of metabolism that isn't exactly "normal" by most standards. And yes, if you were to reach the daily recommended allowance of fiber, you would have a good chance of being knocked out of ketosis (albeit, it may be for a short time). Remember, RDA is based on a 2,000 calorie diet that also suggests a significant amount of carbohydrates. So, in other words, the RDA doesn't apply to this. It's frustrating, I know. Even psyllium kicks me out of ketosis if I'm not careful.
Thomas DeLauer ok. Thanks for taking the time for a great response. By the way, I've always heard fiber is not digested but simply passes through the digestive system so I'm confused as to how it can invoke an insulin response, especially not being accompanied with a glucose spike. Apparently I have much to learn about insulin.
"Even psyllium kicks me out of ketosis if I'm not careful." Psyllium isn't pure fiber, there around 15% carbs. So kicking out of ketosis because of carbs in psyllium or to much protein....or...
I think it's important to know what works for you individually. To know that, you have to test yourself. I personally think most confusion stems from all these companies making "low carb" treats. If you do a natural ketogenic diet comprised of whole foods then the chances of getting kicked out of ketosis are very slim. Once you begin to make baked goods, drinking diet soda, and buying bars, then you really need to be careful. Me, I can eat protein powders, and drink diet soda, but can't consume large amounts of greens and other "keto" veggies without getting knocked out.
tbh i tried keto diet mostly because i want to lose weight, i just want to share my experience with it, its really actually hard to sustain plus i do experience very excruciating headache thats why i stopped it and started agoge diet. i did lose weight without all those bad things and i have never been happier. maybe keto is not just for me
I just read that if you experience headaches its because you had keto flu. Basically withdrawal symptoms from carbs or sugar. Withdrawal from sugar is very similar to withdrawal from smoking or alcohol
Im new to ketosis but been researching like a mad man. Im on day 6. This video is almost correct. I love this author/creator but when ‘subtracting’ the fiber from your total carbs you can only subtract the fiber carbs that are INSOLUBLE FIBER and alot of packaging makes it difficult to know what type of fiber it is because SOLUBLE fiber does count as carbs. For best result try and aim for 50 carbs a day. If you go over a little its FINE but keep on striving! Good luck! Ps stay away from the added sugar alcohols
My question is, if you subtract fiber from carbohydrates, couldn't you then just eat something higher in carbs but counter that with taking a fiber supplement?
Hello Thomas! I am glad to see your channel is growing and I would greatly appreciate it if you could do a video on acne and on my issue specifically. I have been suffering from acnes for 7 years and has put myself through a lot of stress as a result of it. I took all the vitamins from A to K2, minerals from Calcium to Zinc in virtually all shapes and forms that are available out there (citrate, chelates, oratate, gluconate, etc); herbs from Ashwagandha to Tarragon in dried, liquid, capsules, and natural forms. I stoped taking them all a couple of months ago and I feel horrible. My current diet for every day is: Brussel sprouts, salmon, avocados, buckwheat, almonds and dried apricots and nothing else. I have been jumping from keto to vegan, from vegan to regular, from regular to low-carb so many times that I just don't care what I eat as long as it doesn't harm me. My activity level: wake up at 5 am and workout for 1 hour, followed by 30 minutes swim (in the morning before breakfast.). As soon as I leave the swimming pool, I am feeling incredible but once I have my first meal, I feel horrible and this feeling remains with me until I go to bed. Next day is the same and such have been almost all my days recently. I have literally run out of ideas. Read about 100 articles on ncbi related to acne, searched all the posts and forums, watched all the videos on RUclips and tried everything on myself. In this January alone I spent around $2000 on dermatologists/cosmetologists/medications. I got rid off the money but the acnes are still with me. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Not sure if you'll see this, and maybe you've addressed this issue, but what about what I call "mystery carbs", a food that supposedly has no sugar carbs and yet the net carb shows far more than the fiber carb grams. Hummus, for instance. Looking at a recipe for this and it lists fiber as near 0g, sugar as 0g and total carbs 7g/Tablespoon. It's not just hummus though, I've seen similar on many food labels, even vodka. What are these unlabeled carbs, where are the from, do they count towards net carbs and will they eff up my ketosis? I suspect they will so I've stayed away from many foods I think would be helpful if not for the extraneous carbs.
I dont know why people are so confused about this video. What he said is net carbs are the carbs that count toward blood sugar. So if you're someone like a diabetic, then net carbs are the carbs that really affect you. If your doing ketosis, its POSSIBLE that all carbs will will count against your ketosis; so air on the side of caution and count all carbs.
This doesn’t pass the sniff test, recommend daily intake of fiber is 30 grams a day, most the keto vids recommend anywhere from 20-50 carbs a day. So if your meeting your daily recommended fiber - which every health professional on all sides of the spectrum heavily recommend, it would be impossible to do a keto diet
I think the whole net carbs vs total carbs truly falls to individuality. Some people tolerate fiber and carbs better than others. I think it's best to test it out and go with what works best for each person.
I count carbs, because I must (type 1 diabetic....my pancreas cells were killed by an auto immune attack). And I do use the fiber subtracted from total carbs method.
Every body is different but I was pretty dark on the strips but went over 8 carbs ( 28 total for day ) and bam went down a notch on the keto strip. Dang Atkins bars. Beware of Net carbs 😡
Ceylon Santo, please get yourself a ketone blood reader, they also read glucose as an added benefit. Urine strips are not accurate as you get deeper into ketosis because your body learns how to use them for fuel. Look it up, blood ketone readers/delauer.
Keto has so much to understand, tried to cook an listen, kept zoning out. Ended up replaying it 3 times, hard to concentrate on something so new. Cut out bread, rice, desserts, chips, sugar, and I still have to cut fruit, and certain veggies, still need better self control. :( This scale better go down once I do
Yep, clear as mud. There was never any question for me that all carbs count. I was specifically interested in his perspective on the glycemic index/load effect of fiber carbs on blood sugar and therefore insulin spikes. I have insulin resistance, so when my insulin elevates, it takes a long time for it to come down, so I was interested in learning if the high-fiber tortillas and buns I eat on occasion spike my blood sugars as fast as the tortillas and buns without the extra fiber.
Very new to keto here, trying to learn all I can. Sadly not much available in rural Australia that I see on some of these channels. I am reading labels like a crazy lady and my shopping is taking forever. if the label has 2.4g Carbs. 1.0g sugars and 2.5g fibre, does that mean the net carbs are -0.1. Is it possible to do negative carbs?
What country does the subtraction on the label? I read they do the subtraction for you somewhere. It makes the product "more salable" with the low number of carbs.
fiber is a carb that your body can't digest so in net carbs fiber is subtracted from total carbs. Same with sugar alcohol, it is a carb your body can't use so it is subtracted from total carbs as well.
Hi Thomas.. I have muscular legs and calves and I want to loose muscles in that areas so I can wear dress above knees and shorts.. Will ketosis be helpful for me?!! Thanks in advance.
Hey Thomas...love your videos!! Been committed to keto for a few months now and LOVE IT! Still confused about sugar alcohols however. Does Erythritol in any amount big or small kick you out of ketosis or effect your ketones in any way? I've watched all your videos on sugars and sugar substitutes I can find and I'm still not clear if Erythritol is detrimental to maintaining my ketosis state. Some say it's ok, and some say it's not?! What do you say about that one in particular?
Nutrition labeling is almost worthless for Keto (for non-health foods). Net Carbs need to be strongly defined and made mandatory. Sugars seem to be manipulated on the current labeling protocol, specially on consumer foods. MY assumption is that sugars and alcohol sugars are not always properly labeled, I hope I am wrong...
I'm so confused about keto and carbs. I saw these protein low carbs in Walmart. Said on box. 1gram of carb per bar. But on back total carbs was 10 fiber was 7 so I subtracted that ...so that would be 3 g left. Of net carbs. So how they got 1g I don't know. I'm finding keto so hard cause I can't figure it out
Very confusing indeed. How could non digestible fibers, which can't be assimilated by the human body, influence the QUANTITY of sugar in the blood ? They will certainly slow down the sugar rise but how can it increase it ?
Depends on the person's sensitivity to be honest. We all react a bit different. I can speak for myself when I say, "yes," it does. However, note that the 50g carbs per day is only a rough estimate and a standard, so to speak.
@TRK I'd say ur about right.. Its taken me a while to get things where i want them losing BF and gaining muscle with compound lifts. I now find 0.75g Protein /lb Lean BW is enough protein for me and works well for ketosis. I use Dr Schmidts ratio 1:1 for ketosis keeping Total carbs to 60 or less. Why not have the psyllium and acv at the end if ur eating window.
@ Thomas DeLauer: So I’ve just started the Keto Diet, I train in MMA which is extremely endurance heavy on both the body and mind, and my caloric needs are quite high due to two days a week I work out twice a day. Is it possible to reach the macros without going over the recommended amount of carbs to hit Ketosis?
Damn lol. I saw this Keto Friendly bagel and has 33g total carbs, 23g dietary fiber and 5g sugar alcohol = 5g net carbs. Was hoping it wouldn’t knock me out of ketosis…
Can you do a video on how many carbs would be considered the maximum daily amount on the keto diet for men and women? I have to imagine it is less for women, because just about everything else is. I want to start keto full time soon (and already sort-of have just to get used to it) but I want to make sure I know exactly what to do so I do not derail myself because of an oversight. Thanks a mill :-)
Ok i just started the keto diet and im trying to figure it out i have an app that counts the net carbs and fiber i get from 20- 25 net carbs a day but when it says total carbs it shows up to 40 is that ok? Do the fibers not matter towards the net carbs please help im so confused and im scared to do it wrong ans end up with a fatty liver instead of losing weight😣
I'm being serious when I say this, i just bought a ton of chia seeds and have been soaking and eating them at each meal thinking they would counter the carbs because of the high fiber.
Great video as always Thomas, but I’m still confused on this. What should I actually be counting? Net or total carbs? This sounds a little tricky so just wanted to ask for some clarification. Thank you for the great work.
Thank you for this video 🙌🏽 Unfortunately in Australia 🇦🇺 they don't have fibre in our labels. Makes this very complicated! Any suggestions? Many thanks!
Wow, I watch fitness videos all the time, exspecially keto onces, but all of them said just subtract the fibers, and their ripped and go by it. I've been aiming under 20 every day, but I guess counting the fibers ive been eating 46 grams every day and still loosing weight and feeling great, hm idk ! I'm a new subscriber to you and your awesome still! Just kinda sucks I find out this way I've been mis-doing it wrong 😫😭😝
ValdezRUclips you gotta do what works for you. I think the key point to take from this is that if you are not getting results, then maybe trying to count net carbs doesn't work for you. If you're getting results, have energy, and aren't hungry all the time, tryna keep doing what you're doing 😀
Net carbs is an excuse! It is understandable if you are having one of those whole grain tortillas for a wrap that have 15 grams total carbs, and 4 net carbs. But people blow it out of proportion and eat 30 net carbs and 100 total. You will still drop the weight but if you do that make sure you control your fat intake.
Keep it simple.. stay away from sugar alcohols. Its not realistic to eat your sugar alcohol laden treats and stay in optimal ketosis. Stick w real foods
Thanks for the clarification! If the fiber and sugar alcohols count when talking about ketosis does that mean I should count total carbs if I want the health benefits of a low carb diet? 😂
welll booo...i was really looking forward to enjoying a "keto" cookie that Quest products came out with that has carbs at 20 g fibers at 10 g erythritol at 5 g. putting the net carbs at 5 g...what a bummer. but you did explain what i need to look at when buying groceries.

Every body is different but I was pretty dark on the strips but went over 8 carbs ( 28 total for day ) and bam went down a notch on the keto strip. Dang Atkins bars. Beware of Net carbs 😡
If there is any ketones in your urine you are still in keto, lower is actually better. Your body is using it for fuel.
:( This scale better go down once I do
How did it go, if you don't mind me asking?
that was as clear as mud ...I will just stick to total carbs for the count
I’m saying 😂
Total Carbs - fiber = net carb
But total carbs still affect ketosis.
In Australia we already have nett carb labels ,so be careful thinking you take fibre off of the carb amount
That makes no sense. Last thing you said contradicted your whole video🤔🤔
fiber is a carb that your body can't digest so in net carbs fiber is subtracted from total carbs. Same with sugar alcohol, it is a carb your body can't use so it is subtracted from total carbs as well.
Should we still try to have the recommended daily amount of fiber when on a ketogenic diet?
Hi Thomas.. I have muscular legs and calves and I want to loose muscles in that areas so I can wear dress above knees and shorts.. Will ketosis be helpful for me?!! Thanks in advance.
Bella Mae no.
So when i eat carbs that have little net carbs does that mean im getting minimal carbs for energy restoration?
Europa has another rules on the nutrition label. Sugar alcohols counts in total carbohydrates, but fiber doesn't.
Hey Thomas! Would love to hear a talk on exercise induced glycogen debt and it's effect on ketosis!
So should I track total carbs eaten or net carbs?
I need a visual explanation. How do I work this out when looking at labels? I’m from the uk and labels here look a little different I think
So... We should count the normal carbs in everything except for the vegetables???
Nutrition labeling is almost worthless for Keto (for non-health foods). Net Carbs need to be strongly defined and made mandatory. Sugars seem to be manipulated on the current labeling protocol, specially on consumer foods. MY assumption is that sugars and alcohol sugars are not always properly labeled, I hope I am wrong...
I understood this until the last 45 seconds.
I'm finding keto so hard cause I can't figure it out
I wish I could afford a personal nutritionist and chef. Trying to figure everything out and eat properly is like a full time job. 😕
Hey Thomas any tips for a type one diabetic?
Very confusing indeed. How could non digestible fibers, which can't be assimilated by the human body, influence the QUANTITY of sugar in the blood ? They will certainly slow down the sugar rise but how can it increase it ?
im confused. so does eating Psyllium Hust which takes you over 50 carbs kick you out of keto?
Is there for Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetics?
how does fiber or sugar alcohol cancel the crabs,,,
how about carbs by difference? is it the same as carbs?
I still don’t understand how the protein or sugar alcohols cancel out a carbohydrate.
Great content thanks Thomas. Could you please do a video on the optimal way to bulk on a keto diet and also a cyclical keto diet? Thanks
@ Thomas DeLauer:
So I’ve just started the Keto Diet, I train in MMA which is extremely endurance heavy on both the body and mind, and my caloric needs are quite high due to two days a week I work out twice a day.
Love your kitchen.
I am hungry during keto. Why?
Are you getting enough fat?
Ok i just started the keto diet and im trying to figure it out i have an app that counts the net carbs and fiber i get from 20- 25 net carbs a day but when it says total carbs it shows up to 40 is that ok? Do the fibers not matter towards the net carbs please help im so confused and im scared to do it wrong ans end up with a fatty liver instead of losing weight😣
I wish you can cover losing fat and maintain muscle mass during the month of Ramadan. Thank you
I'm being serious when I say this, i just bought a ton of chia seeds and have been soaking and eating them at each meal thinking they would counter the carbs because of the high fiber.
Great video as always Thomas, but I’m still confused on this. What should I actually be counting? Net or total carbs? This sounds a little tricky so just wanted to ask for some clarification. Thank you for the great work.
Often people try net carbs first and then only total carbs if things aren't working for them!
Thanks man!! So informative!
Thank you for this video 🙌🏽
Unfortunately in Australia 🇦🇺 they don't have fibre in our labels. Makes this very complicated! Any suggestions? Many thanks!
stick only to the veggie
It's because the carbs are already nett carbs
Great information
You will still drop the weight but if you do that make sure you control your fat intake.
hmmmmmmmm. and i usually take around 30g net carb but sometimes over 100g total carb mostly from flaxseed and chia seed
Thank you for sharing and posting this informations. I needed this!
If it all counts anyways, why subtract it in the first place??
So…can’t we just take fiber supplements to get an even lower NET carbs?
So what does your total carbs need to be then ??
Funny how so many ketosis guys (and girls) say you can deduct net carbs from your numbers and still stay in ketosis.
Keep it simple.. stay away from sugar alcohols. Its not realistic to eat your sugar alcohol laden treats and stay in optimal ketosis. Stick w real foods
Nika Boyce exactly.
This guy needs a shirt that fits.
Clears up so much confusion! Thanks Thomas
Thanks Thomas❗️💥👍
I'm confused. So, dont pay attention to net?
Ketosis rule #1
Do TRT and don’t tell any of your viewers and claim it’s all keto nice one 👍👍👍
Trt?

Thanks for the clarification! If the fiber and sugar alcohols count when talking about ketosis does that mean I should count total carbs if I want the health benefits of a low carb diet? 😂
If fiber does t affect bl sugars then how can they knock you out of ketosis? This vid did nothing to resolve that claim
i dont see net carb on any of the ingredients
Avocado an Cacao has too many carbs for 30grams in a day
What if a food has higher fiber than carbs... bean sprouts for example ... please let me no
So, count total carbs, not net?
then if youre trying to be on ketosis all carbs are counted and net carbs mean nothing.... so greens WOULD count as carbs
So in other words, it's better to ignore net and go with raw carbs. That was my summation
welll booo...i was really looking forward to enjoying a "keto" cookie that Quest products came out with that has
carbs at 20 g
fibers at 10 g
erythritol at 5 g. putting the net carbs at 5 g...what a bummer.
but you did explain what i need to look at when buying groceries.
I tried the Agoge diet but it was difficult to follow. But I found that the ketogenic diet works for me!
Me too! My doctor told me the Agoge diet is unsafe. Keto is great!
If you want to lose fat, you should not compromise your well-being with the ketogenic diet. I recommend getting a personalized diet. I've had great success with the Agoge diet for example.
NOOOO. I just knocked myself out of ketosis. Keto flu here i come!
U didn’t clarify anything as it relates to keto.
thanks Thomas, I absolutely love your channel, it's so very interesting and informative.
best of luck to you!☺👍👍👍👍
Thank you, Sarah!
I don't understand :(
I was suspicious of my plateauing in keto. Now I think I know why. Curse you sugar alcohols!!!
So carb - fiber - sugar alc= total carbs?
That deep v, though
This information wasn't very clear.
Fibre can knock you out of ketosis? Oh, I give up.
Damn it Tom, why do you have to say these things lol. Oh well I save my carbs for greens and some lactose anyway. Thanks for the info!
Because I'm trying to make your life miserable :-)
But, you're very welcome for the info!
So, to stay in ketosis, look at total carbs. Net carbs mean nothing important
I knew it was too good to be true 😂
so how many overall carbs should we eat.?
Jean Jospitre most people believe 50 grams total carbs from non starchy foods. Dark leafy greens, mushrooms, asparagus, sprouts, zucchini, broccoli, etc.
Well ain’t that a kick in the ass. So, no, net carbs aren’t helpful in a keto diet. That much, I guess would be helpful to add.
