Started a real Ketogenic Diet through your channel and I got a two for one life change. I went on a low carb diet starting in early June 2021 I lost a few lb's. Then I found you and followed you through your training and BAM weight is finally coming off the way I wanted it to. Quick self health explanation. I am type 2 diabetic for many years was taking 70 units a day, gave birth to 8 boys, started on insulin 1 year ago and 50lb's came on with vengeance from the injections. I have lost 17 lb's starting the Keto Diet fasting 2 days out of the week and water, water, water with electrolytes and filter water as well. Just started walking for 30 min. a day. As of today I am taking 0 insulin in the morning & 4 units at night my glucose readings went from 400+ to this morning reading 116. AMAZING & owe a thank you to Mr. Delauer for my success!

I watched the video with the recommended plans and it's still unbearably confusing. I am tech savvy. I received 2 different emails with different content in the body of each but the same download versus what the body says.
This is not what I expected from Thomas as he is so concise in all his videos. I'm disappointed.

I avoid all carbs since a heart attack in May. I made a glycemic index chart and followed it. I lost so much weight very specifically where I thought I could never lose it! I lost 4 inches in my waist. I feel great now, because I look better than I ever did. Watching your videos has guided me away from fruit which I previously thought was essential(though I was only eating cherries and prunes at the time). I've always eaten with reckless abandon and still do. Now I just avoid carbs and try to eat within the 8 hour window.

Four weeks ago I started to keep track of my daily carbs. The first week I changed nothing and averaged 318 net-carbs per day. Week two I averaged 256.2 net-carbs per day. Week three I averaged 139.7 net-carbs per day. Last week I averaged 53.7 carbs per day. since I started to cut my carbs (starting 25 March) I've lost 13.4 pounds. My goal is to stay at 50-60 carbs per day while also keeping 1000 calories under my caloric needs. Is this an effective way to have consistent weight loss? My demographics are; 35, male, 6' 3" current weight 436.6 pounds, sedentary lifestyle (although I find myself with a lot more energy to move about the house quite a bit), stay-at-home dad (starting weight 25 March 2019 was 450 pounds).

I find low carb and keto confusing. I eat low carb but not keto (tried keto, it was okay but a bit boring) and about 60-80%+ of my calories come from fat. I do intermittent fasting, have bulked up with muscle over the last ten years and maintained my abs the whole time. So surely my body is burning fat for energy and I'm rarely going without carbs for days on end.

In November, I was 320 lbs. Had two spine surgeries 2 and 4 months prior. Working out was barred for me by doctors. I used info from Thomas and Dr berg on keto and I am now at 195. No exercise outside my normal daily routine (my job is quite physical). And tbh, Ive lost very little muscle. 125lbs in 5 1/2 months is pretty amazing.
    Thanks Thomas.

In 2018 I weighed 240 at 5'6" I randomly saw one of Dr. bergs videos on youtube. I figured what the hell why not. By the time 2019 came around I was 163. Went and rejoined the military "Navy reserves" I had gotten out of the Marines in 2010 and didn't think I could ever get back in.
I'm a fatty at heart, daddy likes to eat. After the first 2 weeks it's easy. I mixed in intermittent fasting and eventually got down to one meal a day.

Try some fasting, too. Works amazing and not just for weight loss.
Some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data:
The hunger hormone ghrelin lowers over time with extended fasting and rise from dieting
Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system.
Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic.
Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque.
Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods.
Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body.
Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy!
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus.
Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility especially in women with PCOS.
It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue ruclips.net/video/giEDadzoErs/видео.html
Does the body prefernetially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, it never uses mainly glucose for fuel and using glucose for fuel is very biochemically damaging! ruclips.net/video/Nf1jwMbvNxw/видео.html
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
Is fasting just the same as caloric restriction? No! Dieting increases the hunger hormone ghrelin while fasting decreases it and has many other health benefits! ruclips.net/video/sVl-nilhWLc/видео.html
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.
Does fasting burn muscle? In most cases no! ruclips.net/video/teQIaU6wp2o/видео.html
Fasting can make you gain muscle faster: ruclips.net/video/5RM8GRzsIIg/видео.html
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! ruclips.net/video/BeC_gIR2Z14/видео.html
Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections.
After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system.
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging.
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow.
      What breaks a fast? ruclips.net/video/7aRLsCpxy3o/видео.html
Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it and builds muscle!
      ruclips.net/video/fJUDucBWv4s/видео.html
Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

I don't think I'm in Ketosis, but I've lowered my carbs dramatically. I find that if I do a v low carb diet for up to 3 or 4 months I start to feel emotionally empty, it's a weird sensation. I have no cravings and I'm not hungry, but emotionally I feel flat. I think it's because the food is not giving me my endorphine high. I love to eat veg and salad, I love meat and cheese, I eat all those things, but without the carbs I think I start to feell empty and blah emotionally. Does anyone else get that?

Exactly, it was a way to reverse type 2 diabetes and the bonus was weight loss. So we are actually looking at almost 60 years ago. Atkins was ridiculed by medical profession at the time and into the 1980s, but now the doctors seem to have caught up and are recommending his plan for diabetics.

Ketosis is not "starvation" mode. It just means you are using fat as a primary fuel source instead of carbohydrates. This was the natural metabolic state for 95% of human history until the advent of agriculture about 10,000 years ago. Our bodies have adapted to running off glucose because our diets have become so carbohydrate rich. The body produces its own glucose when it needs to from fats. There was never any significant source of carbohydrates available to our hunter gatherer ancestors in nature. The fruits, veggies, and grains we consume today have been manipulated and bred for thousands of years to suit us. The idea that you are "starving" once glycogen stores are depleted after 24hrs of fasting is absolutely ridiculous. In ketosis, the body actually retains far more muscle mass than a restricted calorie diet and the average person has at least one month's worth of fat reserves before the body would even consider using muscle for fuel. The point where muscle is being used for fuel because fat has run out is true starvation. To rephrase, starvation is when you run out of fat, not when you run out of carbs.

You have no idea what the fuck hunter gatherers ate. The majority of the fossil evidence that we have provides evidence for a majority plant-based diet, NOT a keto diet. Even with fossil evidence we can only GUESS what they consumed. Your logic is fucking smack too. We don't need carbs because our body can produce them from fat? We don't need to eat fat because we can produce lipids from carbs. Just like there are essential fatty acids that come from foods high in fat, there are essential micro-nutrients that you can only get from plants. You're all fucking morons. Keto, low-carb, high-carb, it doesn't fucking matter. You can lose fat eating exclusively twinkies, google the twinkie diet. All that matters for weight loss is being in a caloric deficit. There are zero populations of humans that have long-term keto diets. There are zero humans who have done a keto diet long-term. The fact that you're smashing in saturated fat when we know for a FACT that it increases your risk of developing Alzheimer's, heart disease, and metabolic syndrome just shows how fucking desperate you are to believe in pseudoscience.

A celebrity, one of the worlds famous sports scientists, Dr. Tim Noakes is a celebrated author and follower of KETOGENIC diet. Surprisingly and in fact, Noakes hasn’t even succeeded in curing his own diabetes-as he will tell you. He diagnosed himself, based on his blood-sugar levels and family history. Even after a year on the high-fat, low-carb regimen, his fasting glucose had barely budged; it was still hovering above 125. “Nothing happened,” he said. So he prescribed himself metformin, a common first-line diabetes drug. “He was on two grams a day, which is a massive dose.” When that didn’t work, he added supplements, including berberine, curcumin, and one called N-acetyl cysteine. That finally got his glucose and hemoglobin A1c (another marker of diabetes) under control. “So I’m cured,” he says. “But he not cured, because he still has to take the medicine.”
    WHY?
It is about how many times you eat a day, it doesn't matter what you eat and how much you eat, of course processed foods are a big no and importance of macros cannot be underplayed, OMAD diet and TMAD diet will work and sustainable throughout life. The hormones and calories and carbs and proteins and oils and Keto and extended fasting (think about thin and non obese people) and other lines of discussions are meaningless and confusing. So many proponents for each of them with conflicting stands. Because the reason is not Glucose or Ketones, it is Excess Insulin. Please go through Dr. Joseph R Kraft's videos and his book "Diabetes Epidemic and you" Or go through touchworld.org
The beauty is we can measure the insulin patterns and reverse diseases by following OMAD and TMAD diets. Almost all diseases, mental and physical are associated with excess insulin! KETOGENIC DIET supresses the Glucose levels in blood, but does not cure the dormant disease. WHAT is this dormant disease? The diabetes as we know is created by Pharma and almost all doctors, health professionals and people are misled, the truth is it is not glucose level that matters, it is Insulin!
Animal PROTEIN has a high insulin response. The reason they are actually never cured of diabetes, it is only their symptoms of diabetes are supressed. KETO followers are happy with lower glucose levels or lower readings of HbA1C. Wake up friends!
Dr. Kraft addresses the true disease simply and practically and it is equated with Hyperinsulinemia and measurable. Not only millions of (great) doctors and scientists are mislead, they are looking at plasma glucose levels to determine if you are diabetic, which is totally wrong, they talk of low carb diet/ketogenic or fasting to keep away from glucose. No doubt, a great doctor, Dr. Jason Fung’s 24 hour fasting is nothing but OMAD diet, who is closest to the truth and helps in reducing the chronic high insulin levels in the blood.
In KETO, PROTEIN has a high insulin response. The reason they are never cured of diabetes, only their symptoms of diabetes are supressed, with lower glucose levels or lower readings of HbA1C. Wake up friends!
Dr. Kraft has clinical data on 14,000 + people collected over 25 years, as proof on what constitutes TRUE/REAL DIABETES. Obesity, diabetes mellitus, dementia, etc are all symptoms of “Diabetes” as defined by Dr. Kraft, which manifest after 7 to 12 years being hyperinsulinemic. Only One meal a day or two meals a day will solve the problem. It works for non obese persons as well, they get CURED of Obesity, Diabetes, Hypertension, etc., and most of the mental and chronic physical ailments.

I have a question. I’ve been doing intermittent fasting, is it good (or at the very least, ok) to break my fast with whey protein isolate? I know I should have some bone broth, but besides that. Well, I’ll explain actually. Most the time I have chicken and vegetables, and cottage cheese. Sometimes all I have available is not great, like now I have baked pork chops with a barbecue sauce on it. Not real barbecue sauce, just ketchup and mustard, but still, kinda sugary. So I wanted to break my fast with a small protein shake then eat a pork chop. My shake is body tech whey protein isolate. Thanks 🙏

Wildly misleading title; this 8 minute peroration is just a cheering section for keto diets; NOTHING about low carb is given, except, at the very end, he intimates a low carb diet could make you feel nausea, sick, rundown... because hey: you ALMOST got into ketosis (the promised land)... but you failed to get over "the hump". Yeah: that's a pretty balanced comparison alright...

Everything I look up just pulls up keto rash information. Please find something about it! 💕 P. S. I’m not a new subscriber. I’ve been watching you for years!

Have you been taking enough sunlight? A lot of skin problems are actually healed if you spend at least 45 minutes under the sun (do not use sunscreen or sun lotion, those are the actual causes of skin cancer). Find an hour of the day with the lowest UV index, either the first hour after sunrise or the hour just before sunset, and expose as much of your skin as possible to it. Or find a place in the shade in other hours, and step into the sun gradually, as long as you are comfortable, so that you do not get a sunburn.
I live in Mexico, I am white, and after taking these sunbaths, I am now able to spend 45 minutes under the sun at different hours, without taking a break; I've been doing it for several years now, and since then, my skin has no rashes :-)

Inches have come off my waistline, and I'm down 25lbs. However, I do have a question, I do enjoy a HIIT workout at least 2x a week. I usually take a CKO Kickboxing class that is 60 mins in duration. I have noticed my energy levels drop significantly during this type of workout...Is there an option to eat higher amounts of carbs, say 90 mins before a HIIT workout, and burn those carbs off during the workout, thereby giving me energy that I need while not kicking myself out of ketosis? I just really enjoy kickboxing and like the results I am getting from the keto diet.

2:30 you're talking about total calories. I was watching another channel from one of the medical research doctors I follow recently, and I've tried to find the video so I could link it, but I'm not seeing it, but that guy was saying that his research showed that a fully keto adapted person doesn't just use or store calories. In other words, if you're not using the calories to do something (running, swimming, thinking) normally you would store them for later, but a keto adapted person will shed excess calories into his environment by either using it to produce excess body heat, by breathing the ketones out, or by excreting the ketones in urine.
I believe it is because the lack of insulin that the body is simply not triggered to go into storage mode, and what ever isn't getting used is simply being shed. This means you can actually eat more calories than you use, and still lose weight. You don't have to end the day on a caloric deficit.

You just have insulin resistance. I bench over 400 and have no problem working out after fasting for several days. If you go keto it will take months to get totally used to it but if you fast it is fairly quick.

Fast carbs/sugar even in very small amounts, slow carbs when going over 30 grams of total net carbs pr day (some can do more some less) and to much protein (gluconeogenesis) will kick you out of ketosis.

Sqze how much protein a day do you recommend to stay in ketosis

    • @Sqze
      @Sqze 7 лет назад +1

      +Todd Huynh
Between 1- 2 gram of protein pr kg lean body mass.
If very active, healthy and lifting weights seriously you 'need' and can tolerate more. If really overweight, unhealthy and sedentary not much.
If in doubt you can test it with a glucometer what works best for you.
Most who are in ketosis, well adapted and feeling good will know if they drop out into either carb sugar burning or gluconeogenesis because they would know what they ate to much of... or if they ate something they have a hard time tolerating ;)

2 grams of protein per kg of lean mass is way too much even for a skimo.

There's been studies that once you are truely keto adapted, the energy levels are much higher in ketosis rather than running on glucose.

Great video explanation. Thank you. Have you ever talked about ketongenic diet for diabetes? I'm D2 recently and trying to work out a keto diet while monitoring blood sugars from carbs etc but want to regain my energy and muscle mass at the same time. My Quadriceps reduced quite a bit in size including other muscle groups when I was struggling with my diabetics and now trying to build it back up. Any information you can send my way? Thank you

If you are doing high performance you can do carb ups. For when you need it then back to keto.

is playing tennis 3-4 times a week, running and cycling (this I do everyday) considered high performance? Because I love the feeling of ketosis, but I want the max energy i can have.

Keep carbs at 20-30, greens and some cheese

I'd say mostly no. Depends if you are jogging or sprinting. The tennis could be high performance though

Are you able to build muscle on a keto diet?

  • @HoneyDrake
    @HoneyDrake 2 года назад +1

I lost 30 lbs. with keto in the first 4 months . From 164 to 134.
It lowered my pre-diabetic from 6.3 to 5.1 . I’m 73 so I’m not moderately active so a keto diet works for me . I tried doing veggies and ended up with diverticulitis. And gained 7 lbs …now I’m back to keto and having a hard time losing those pounds . Ugh !!! I walk my dog twIce a day 30 to 40 minutes, plus, I do yard work or vigorous house cleaning. I have experienced the keto flu and the low energy that comes with it, so added some almond flour baking so I can get a few carbs in, but I think I do need to cut back on my fatty meats . And salads, although I love them, seems to put weight on me . Help !

@ Think about it. Someone made a critique about a camera cut on a RUclips video and you lash out by claiming they are jealous about the guy's body. Are people only allowed to respond positively or else it means they're jealous? It's pretty obvious that you're the one with the insecurity issues, especially since you LOL in all your replies. What are you 12yrs old?

It’s just to add something to the video to keep you interested. I believe people who are trained in shooting professional videos do little things like this to subconsciously keep your brain interested. I mean the clips of people doing activities aren’t necessary either right? But it’s done to keep the video fresh in a way. Whoever shot this for him is probably trained in some of these tactics. Presentation is just as important as the content being presented basically.

As a biochemist, you have some correct and some false information. For one, both glycogen breakdown and beta oxidation of fatty acid are ATP producing process via NADH production leading to electron transport chain activation. So it was false for you to day that carb runs via ATP while fat runs via beta oxidation is false, for they are both getting ATP. The reason why glycogen breakdown is better for athletes is that glycogen breakdown is a simpler process than ketone body breakdown. Ketone body process requires reversal reaction leading to acetyl coa production that enters the kreb cycle afterward. So it's much easier for glycogen and faster, which is why athletes need carb

The way he explained it was the same as was explained in my health and fitness class, it is a lot more complicated than what he said but that is how most fitness and basic science classes summarize the process because the two are broken down differently even though it is technically the same process. So he wasn't technically wrong, it was a summary not a full, in depth explanation.

    • @guilbertmedina325
      @guilbertmedina325 6 лет назад +6

Silver Scale Productions he was wrong when he said you don’t use ATP’s when in Ketosis, because you do. That’s how we get energy. Even when you don’t get oxygen in the transport chain, your muscles go to a state call fermentation and ATP’s still get made. ATP’s is what we run on. It’s easier for our body’s to process carbs than it does with fat, but at the end, we still get ATP’s.

    • @SilverScaleMA
      @SilverScaleMA 6 лет назад +2

@@guilbertmedina325 well that is what I meant, the process between the two is slightly different but the end result is the same, I was mainly just saying that most health classes describe it the same way he did. Science classes go a lot more in depth and into the specifics of the processes but most health classes usually just give the gist of it because it does get very complicated. But by what I understood from my various classes is that, while all the processes to produce ATP's use energy, some processes also use some ATP's in the process too. Ketosis doesn't because, by its nature it is the process used when the body already does not have enough ready made energy. He did forget to clarify that one point and left it open for misinterpretation.

I trust you know what you're talking about, at least in terms of biology. But with that said, it depends on the kind of athlete we're talking about.
I'm not sure parkour or gymnastics counts because I have no problems with performance on ketosis. I would say both are explosive sports, and I train pretty hard.
Of course, this is an anecdote.
