I heard the same thing but think it is a simple accident :) soluble = "susceptible of being dissolved in or as if in a liquid and especially water"; insoluble = "incapable of being dissolved in a liquid and especially water" Cheers!
I am confused about what you mean by this? I would think that it would be the other way around. the more strict you are would mean the more powerful the prescription would be.
Great video, but the last piece of information is confusing. I thought it's the soluble fiber that contains some calories (around 2kcal/g) and it's the insoluble fiber that just goes through our intenstines and helps bowel movement?
Well they both help bowel movements. Soluble fiber by attracting moisture into the gut with water balance and nutrient absorption, and insoluble fibers only 2-3% is fermented in the colon and the rest go straight through us... I don't know how many calories soluble fiber has but that's my understanding!
@@DanielosVK because some people digest more insoluble fiber than others. I think he said the wrong one, as you've said. But there may be something im missing too... In the end, we dont need fiber. And as long as we are sticking to natural foods and not baked almond flour goods and bars daily, youll be just fine. Crutches we have cannot turn into daily habits.
My concern is that by diminishing the total fiber being subtracted (by half in this case), you're left with with very little wiggle room in your daily meals: you'll reach 20g of carbs before even approaching dinner time, provided you're consuming more than a small handful of veggies for a single meal. So I've never understood how to reconcile the two...
Counting half the carbs in packaged products is a good idea, but I think on natural foods and veggies it's ok to just count net carbs. Anything packaged is where they try to deceive you
What do you mean by "copious" amount of sugar alcohol. Maybe you can do a video how 2 or 3 sugar alcohols affect the body, the latest research on the topic & which you recommend to consume over the others.
This video supported my previous decision to count total carbs instead of net carbs, at least for trying to lose weight. Maybe I'll go with net carbs once I've lost the weight and just want to maintain, or maybe not. Thanks for the explanation of how it works, though. Your videos help me to make informed decisions about diet and nutrition.
Sugar alcohols range very drastically. Erythritol has .24 calories per gram. This has negligible impact unless you are eating spoonfuls of the stuff. Xylitol has 2.4 calories per gram. That is 10x the impact of erythriol. So there is no blanket answer for this, you need to read the label and have a rough idea (or a phone to look it up) which sugar alcohols have negligible impact vs ones that are straight up not keto friendly. Using one general formula is very risky when trying to stay true to keto.
Hey Thomas...I just wanna say that I'm really digging how your videos are starting to look a bit different like......like a tour around the studio/house or wherever it is that you're filming. I'm seeing different rooms, different areas, I see the video production equipment here-and-there - great job in changing it up from time-to-time. I like it, brother. The only thing I'd say that kept distracting me a bit were those big black light shades. My eyes kept gravitating towards it. Love the different rooms, just make sure there's not something too big obstructing in the audience's lens. Love the format...keep it up totally.
I’ve been doing keto for a little over a year and have noticed that although some women work well on keto, not all women will function super well on a minimal carb diet. Too few carbs for me threw off my hormones and caused my secondary amenorrhea. If u feel off aswell try increasing your carbs a little bit.
Ya, my clients have had great results and me too. Even less known, if you're trying to lose fat, taking beberine, especially on a cheat day, will help to drive your insulin sensitivity way up
Sounds like a sensible approach, I go super cautious and just count the carbs and try to stick under 50 grams a day at the moment. Seeing good results on long endurance cycling 👍
Right after I was losing a pound a day and then I started eating really high total carb with low net carb products (tortillas/bread/chocolate) of course in moderation that I noticed I plateaued.
Hello Thomas! Great Video, but i don´t really understand the last part of your video. On the one hand you say we should go for soluble fiber and then on the other hand you talk about insoluble fiber that is drawing water to it thusly making it better for us. Then again you talk about Insoluble fiber not being broken down and soluble fiber forming the bulk. It´s very confusing to me. Maybe you could explain it again?
Me too. Thomas is a good dude but he's not answering this misspeak. I think he's hoping we just figure it out. I'm going for the insoluble as a better choice. Too much math makes my head hurt.
Do manufacturers add fiber into the total carb count? If not then it makes no sense at all to subtract fiber from carbs when they're two different things. What is the relationship between fiber and carbs that lets us subtract fiber from carbs? It makes no sense.
Dr. Cywes says that net carbs is bs if one is trying to lose weight, because it's not what goes in your mouth, but what goes into your bloodstream...I am so confused. I just want to drop this last 30lbs I have been struggling with. I plateaued after 70lbs.
Well blood sugar and insulin go hand in hand, except for cephalic response, when your body is preparing for a food since it sees or smells it and anticipates you're feeding the pie hole. So raw sweetener may visually cause insulin to go up so dont stare at it.. i cant really smell it especially if in a container. Blood sugar has a higher impact on insulin, and many ketoers can have good results without even knowing about cephalic response. ✌
Think you had an earlier vid where you mentioned the 1/2 fiber and 1/2 sugar alcohols ... now I know why... (I still don't subtract sugar alcohols at all, as I am nearly Carnivore as it is, so there is no need and just because it is easier) Thanks for explaining
I’m sharing a bottle of red wine with myself and some old cool music (in this moment Madonna “Candy perfume girl”). Feels SO good it can’t be wrong 😉😎 Peace from Copenhagen, Denmark 🇩🇰
What about UK? I’m told total carbs. Does MFP take total,or net. If I go to carb manager and it measure net how much do I deduct from UK product. Thanks
I'm hoping you can answer a question I've not seen anywhere, I have type 2 diabetes and am eager to do keto, so mbut feel I can't until I get this answer when my sugar crashes, which it does daily when I'm eating regularly, what can I do to take care of it that won't take me out of ketosis? this also happens when I try IF @ 12 or 14 hours like clockwork, can I do IF?
@S***** bingo...net vs total only matters if you rely on nut flour baking and eat baked or processed bars multiple times a week or even daily. It doesn't matter if its veg and meat! Its still better than reaching for xxx but when will you address the eating relationship? Everyone needs to see dr cywes..he is a true keto mentor!
I’ve tried keto ice bar and it jacks my sugar up. I’ve lost 110 lbs when I cut sugar completely but now I thought I would try some of the new keto foods. And sadly none of it works for me. Each item I’ve tried causes my blood sugar to increase significantly.
Do you think people need to do the half thing with whole foods (greens, cauliflower, nuts, seeds and so on)? I understand doing that with the bars and keto treats (which is why I try not to have too much of those) but for whole foods I feel like you shouldn't have to do that.
Hey Thomas, do you recommend taking a probiotic while fasting? I’m doing a 36 hour fast and I’m not sure if I should take it during or after the fast. I’m also doing the ACV, lime, and salt drink once during the fast
Smelling sweet and tasting sweet get different responses. Not for all either. The science I read on fiber digestion was 2-3% on a current day human. Its a hard argument to say we are vegetarian for that reason. Ketoconnect has a good video testing a lot of common sweeteners and their effects, and I've heard of a lot of variation between people testing themselves. Will make a difference if one is diabetic/IR as well. I always say anything that has lots of nuts or is a processed bar should be a rare occasion if at all and is a crutch for the first few weeks of keto otherwise it may stall you. The biggest part of eating is finding out your relationship issues with food and when its an emotion vs fuel. I think obese/IR people should use total carbs for that reason. I was strict while losing and at maintenance need to be so much stricter.. "Its ok to have a treat" or something dirty comes back.. I need to not bake at all, really.. ✌
Did you misspeak re: which fiber is "best" to include? You said to "go for Soluble" but then said "insoluble is more powerful because it draws water, and has less risk of of it actually affecting blood sugar," ... way too confusing.
I have been watching your videos since September of 2019 and have lost 65 pounds using keto and ADF :) I have found for me that I need to count total carbs because I have to be super super strict due to severe insulin resistance, but I know that it varies by person. It's been a difficult road but I am positive with content like this and my motivation that I will get to my goal! Thanks for uploading!
I need your help.i found an organic cacao powder with 20gr carbs per 100gr cacao, and the fibers are 31 gr per 100gr cacao.that means that actually this powder has zero net carbs(-11)???
Hey I am new to the video and would love to try Keto. I have looked at a few of your videos but dont seem to find anything to say which is better from Almond Milk and Coconut milk and also Almond flour and Coconut flour. Where I live Coconut Milk/Flour is easier to get
If that's the case, would that mean you'd have to up the total calories on the label? I.e 20gs of carbs - 10gs of fiber would be 10g net carbs (the calorie-total on the label reflects those #s), but if you're sayin to only count half of that fiber, wouldn't you have to add another 20 calories to the ones labeled on the package? I only bring that up cause that could play a huge difference in somebodies total calorie intake when it comes to tracking macros. Anyway, just a thought. Love the vids! Keep up the great work!
Can you enlighten me about Infrared heat wraps? It looks like a sleeping bag that zips up and makes you sweat. ( it's supposed to act like a steam room). I'm curious of the benefits. Also, how do you feel about the vibrational machines that are out there? Any real benefits there?
Hey Thomas I know with everything going on right now it will be difficult, but down the road could you do another ALDI Keto walkthrough? They have a lot more stuff since your video including taking the sugar completely out of the bacon etc..would be cool to see what you find as well.
I’ve been eating OMAD everyday, and I noticed my net carb is around 100g some days but most of it coming from leafy green and cruciferous vegetable, seeds, nuts etc and I notice it doesn’t kick me out of ketosis at all. I usually have around 3000 calories a day and sill 72 to 77% of calories still come from fats. Should I be concerned about net carbs as much since I’m doing OMAD? And this is the nature of my question. Keeping my net carb to 4% or 12% doesn’t seem to make any difference on how I feel, since most net carbs come from vegetables and veggie burgers (14G per burger). I wonder if because of the OMAD effect if it becomes harder to be kicked out of ketosis.
Are you fat adapted? (Been on keto with no cheats for 4-6 months..hard to say if diabetic though). What are the total carbs if net is 100g? I eat omad and my net carbs rarely break 15g each day. Do you do heavy exercise? It will also depend on your size and what you ate before. If you arent breaking ketosis, are you doing blood measurements or peeing on a stick to measure?-- makes a huge difference here! Id be happy to talk to you about this. :) been omad for 2 years this month, keto 2.5 :) ✌
dana102083 I’ve been fat adapted since July 2019. 161 pounds, 5’10’’, 14.7% body fat. I go for long walks daily (over 100 kilometers a week) I do HIIT runs twice a week for 15 minutes each day. Exposed to the son for about 2 hours a day. My OMADs are done on less than 2 hour feeding window (average 50 minutes) I burn over 1000 active calories a day. And on this example of a day where I consumed 98g of net carb it was mostly coming from vegetables, blueberries, strawberries, dark chocolate, seeds and nuts. This day in particular I consumed 3065 calories, 96.9g net carb (14%) , 217.7g fats (71%), 105g protein (15%), My question is, when I go low keto and keep my net carb under 25g or when my net carb is at 96g I do not feel myself going out of ketosis nor I experience any difference in cognitive function. In other words, is it normal for those doing OMAD every single day, 6 to 7 meals a week. (I do one 48 fast and one 72 hour fast a month) , to not notice any difference in cognitive function or overalll well-being wether I have 96g of net carb or 25g. I ask this question because for so long I had been so conscious about keeping net carb as low as possible. At 3000 calories a day a day, a good number to aim for everyday has always been around 32g, but then again I noticed if I had 65g or 80g net carb, as long as they are coming from vegetables and my veggie burgers (Trader Joe’s) as well as berries, I’m still feeling ketosis at the forefront exactly the same if I kept my net carb to 4%. Hopefully someone can share their wisdom.
ck kendrick I’m not sure. I started doing 16:8 and within a week it had become 18:6 and within a month 20:4. I would do fasting 4 to 5 times a week for the first 3 months or so. And by month 4 I had already fully adapted to one meal a day. In the first 4 months of OMAD I would mostly eat within a 2 hour window m, and now for the last 3 or 4 months, it’s common I finish my OMAD protocol in as little as 15 minutes. (Usually the calorie count on those days are around 2100) but it’s pretty common I would go though my whole one meal in 45 or 55 minutes on average. I eat crazy healthy so that might help with getting that many calories in one go. My smoothie can have easily 1700 calories. They contain (cacao beans, sauerkraut, olive oil, mct oil, Brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, coconut butter, coconut shreds, hemp seeds, flaxseeds, chia seeds (occasionally) Chlorella, Spirulina, wheat grass, maca, gotu-kola, Bacopa, 100% dark cocoa chocolate, blueberries30g, strawberries 40g, probiotic Bulgarian yogurt 70g or less, beet juice powder, acerola powder (high vitamin c 500mg in 1 tsp) and finally 12 or so ounces of dark leafy greens, kale,(cruciferous), spinach, Swiss chard, collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, parsley, cilantro, bok Choi, leeks, green onions, celery, beet greens, and also cauliflower, broccoli. Avocados daily average 150g a day. 3 large pasture raised eggs a day. Macadamia nut oil. Fish 3 times a week , salmon (wild caught) sardines, oysters (shell fish), mackerel. Red meat, just liver meat twice a month. And lastly turmeric on everything. As you can see all that stuff add up carbs pretty quickly. If I have 2 veggie patties for example that’s close to 30g net carb right there. And my point is, wether I have an extra 30g or not of bet carb, maybe because of OMAD maybe because of walking 10 miles a day, I feel no difference if I go super low on net carbs or not. That’s what I’m needing help with.
@@coyclarkchannel hey! The reason i asked as I either thought you were an exerciser thats fat adapted or morbidly obese and unsure how to do things..like measuring urine ketones forever... :) so for others reading-- this approach would likely.knock someone out of ketosis. Its 100% because you are fat adapted and have high exercise.. If you stopped exercising but continued to eat that way consistently..id put bets you would notice in a few weeks. Always go by how you feel. If something changes, look back at the last 24-48 hrs to see what you did or didnt do. Id loce to see what volumes you eat..i cant see how the math is net vs total carbs.. I struggle to eat enough protein and know im an outlier due to my illness but you must run a very efficient metabolic machine my friend!! If I eat
I just bought your green detox and thankyou for making buying health supplements fun and not a waste! I feel incredible bro! Thankyou!!! ILY child of God!! You rock!🙂
hi Thomas, im just wondering, im cooking for my wife's lunch everyday in my fasted hours, does tasting and or chewing the food without swallowing it can break my fast? TIA 😁
So I've been doing keto for 4 weeks now and the first week I did the egg diet and I lost weight then I found out you can have net carbs I stayed in 20 and I started gaining back what I lost so I went back to total carbs and now I'm losing it again I don't understand what I'm doing wrong? Maybe because I was eating one bars and quest bars also Atkin bars that was messing me up and I couldn't resist I would snack on one each day
Question: How do I know if I'm out of ketosis? Let's say I'm wrapping up a fast and my keytones are at 2.6. After eating I see they fall to 2.0 then 1.5 then 1.0. but they never fall any further. Did I not go out of ketosis because they didn't fall to zero or did I go out of ketosis because I have falling keytone numbers? thank you
But by this method 100 g of flaxseed would contain close to 17g of carbs and it would be impossible to consider it keto friendly. And not just flaxseed, every other high fibre keto friendly food would have to be avoided.

I'm thinking exactly the same, weight loss stalled after a couple of months on keto
Great, now I can eat as many donuts as I want as long as dip them in psyllium husks /s
Is there a calorie tracking app that does the net carb math?
I use the Cronometer app. It’s does that.
@@MommyStashingMoney thank you!
@@Chicago_Podcast_Authority No problem. :)
Great video Thomas
Would you do a video on plant based meat? Carbs? GI index? Healthy? Thanks
I’ve been doing keto for a little over a year and have noticed that although some women work well on keto, not all women will function super well on a minimal carb diet. Too few carbs for me threw off my hormones and caused my secondary amenorrhea. If u feel off aswell try increasing your carbs a little bit.
Great video my brother, love your attention to detail and helping us all to be better.
How come no one is talking about adding Berberine to their diet- especially for insulin resistance, Keto, etc? Did I miss it somewhere?
Ya, my clients have had great results and me too. Even less known, if you're trying to lose fat, taking beberine, especially on a cheat day, will help to drive your insulin sensitivity way up
Error at 40 seconds you say the sugar alcohols" are subtracted from the total fiber content", they are subtracted from Total Carbs.
Eye opening. Thank you 👨🏫👏👏👏
I still dont get it. Simple question, if I ate a donut and then ate something else that was all fiber, would it cancel the carbs in the donut?
I needed this video a long time ago!
do we lose muscle if we do low crabs,,,? body seems to burn up a lot of protein to make sugar about 200g for a normal person,,
So why can’t i a fiber supplement and negate the carbs in pasta?
So if you divide the fiber in half that’s fine , but what if there’s more “total sugar” in it than fiber
What about monk fruit sweetener like Lakanto? Do those same rules apply?
Erithrytol is the first ingredient in lakanto..then monk fruit.. So yes it applies at least in half.
Do manufacturers add fiber into the total carb count? If not then it makes no sense at all to subtract fiber from carbs when they're two different things. What is the relationship between fiber and carbs that lets us subtract fiber from carbs? It makes no sense.
Should I divide vegetable fibers in half, too?
You are the best as always Thomas!
i love the whiteboard videos
Thanks for the clarity it's needed
what does it mean when there is like 22g carbs and 28g fiber in food label.... raw coca powder...
So basically you’re saying I can eat my halo top icecream. That’s what I came her to find out hahahaha
Dr. Cywes says that net carbs is bs if one is trying to lose weight, because it's not what goes in your mouth, but what goes into your bloodstream...I am so confused. I just want to drop this last 30lbs I have been struggling with. I plateaued after 70lbs.
Are the mission low carb tortillas keto friendly? Are there any other on the market that you would suggest?
If they have oat and wheat fiber Id encourage you not to eat them.
They're not "healthy", but they can fit into a keto lifestyle, yes.
The xtreme wellness fiber ones are pretty good
Shouldn't we be worried more about whether it's spikes insulin than blood sugar
Well blood sugar and insulin go hand in hand, except for cephalic response, when your body is preparing for a food since it sees or smells it and anticipates you're feeding the pie hole. So raw sweetener may visually cause insulin to go up so dont stare at it.. i cant really smell it especially if in a container. Blood sugar has a higher impact on insulin, and many ketoers can have good results without even knowing about cephalic response. ✌
Great video! Thanks, Thomas
Happy Birthday Thomas! 😁
New kitchen? Looking good 👌💪
Think you had an earlier vid where you mentioned the 1/2 fiber and 1/2 sugar alcohols ... now I know why... (I still don't subtract sugar alcohols at all, as I am nearly Carnivore as it is, so there is no need and just because it is easier)
Thanks for explaining
I’m sharing a bottle of red wine with myself and some old cool music (in this moment Madonna “Candy perfume girl”). Feels SO good it can’t be wrong 😉😎 Peace from Copenhagen, Denmark 🇩🇰
What about UK? I’m told total carbs. Does MFP take total,or net. If I go to carb manager and it measure net how much do I deduct from UK product. Thanks
Is psyllium husk a soluble fiber? I love adding that to my keto pizza with almond flour and golden flax seed.
Hey, Thanks for all the videos. I want to know, what's your take on legumes like lentils on keto?
I'm hoping you can answer a question I've not seen anywhere, I have type 2 diabetes and am eager to do keto, so mbut feel I can't until I get this answer when my sugar crashes, which it does daily when I'm eating regularly, what can I do to take care of it that won't take me out of ketosis? this also happens when I try IF @ 12 or 14 hours like clockwork, can I do IF?
Thanks for the breakdown!!! This is a tedious process but I'm gonna hang in there. Your knowledge is a great asset.
Is it true that net carbs really only count with vegetables?
(Asked before I watched the full video, but I'll still avoid the low carb bars.)
When I eat a plant I count net carbs. I’m a little more careful with processed foods.
dana102083 Dr Cywes is wonderful. I highly recommend his “How to Eat Vegetables” video. He is down to earth and practical.
This helped me so much. I have either been stuck or gaining a little weight and I have been so confused. Now I know why. 🤦🏾thank you
Thank you so much for this information !!!
Hey Thomas, do you recommend taking a probiotic while fasting? I’m doing a 36 hour fast and I’m not sure if I should take it during or after the fast.
I’m also doing the ACV, lime, and salt drink once during the fast
Hey Thomas, aren’t there studies that show these “zero BG impact” sweetners still increase insulin?
Correct. Look at how the Cephalic Insulin response works
How much time do salt take to lower the cortisol level in a body.... So that I can consume lean protein after a 46 hrs intermittent fasting...
This is such a great topic! I've been wondering if I should switch to total carbs for a bit now. This is super helpful for me, i appreciate it!
Thomas, what do you think about allulose and it's effect on glucose, insulin, ketones?
I need your help.i found an organic cacao powder with 20gr carbs per 100gr cacao, and the fibers are 31 gr per 100gr cacao.that means that actually this powder has zero net carbs(-11)???
Do you have a video addressing keto and hair loss? Two of the ladies I follow both suffered hair loss in keto. Why? How to prevent?
Iodine
Even I had the same theory and thought like you. I counted half the fibers. Thanks good video
Aldis has a 0 carb bread..what is your take on this product?
Hey I am new to the video and would love to try Keto. I have looked at a few of your videos but dont seem to find anything to say which is better from Almond Milk and Coconut milk and also Almond flour and Coconut flour. Where I live Coconut Milk/Flour is easier to get
While doing keto is it alright to have Diet Coke or Coke Zero?
This was the missing link. You just kicked ketosis into highest gear for me. Thank you...
So sweet matcha is not good?
Great video brother, thank you 😎
Can you enlighten me about Infrared heat wraps? It looks like a sleeping bag that zips up and makes you sweat. ( it's supposed to act like a steam room). I'm curious of the benefits. Also, how do you feel about the vibrational machines that are out there? Any real benefits there?
Could you please please please review
ISO 100 hydrolyzed clear protein powder
Hey Thomas I know with everything going on right now it will be difficult, but down the road could you do another ALDI Keto walkthrough? They have a lot more stuff since your video including taking the sugar completely out of the bacon etc..would be cool to see what you find as well.
😄😄I was just at Aldi's today, and there was barely even any meat there!! Did get some grass-fed organic hamburger 🐮
You eat 3000 calories in one meal? That's alot , i don't think most people can do that
dana102083 I’ve been fat adapted since July 2019. 161 pounds, 5’10’’, 14.7% body fat.
This day in particular I consumed 3065 calories, 96.9g net carb (14%) , 217.7g fats (71%), 105g protein (15%),
My question is, when I go low keto and keep my net carb under 25g or when my net carb is at 96g I do not feel myself going out of ketosis nor I experience any difference in cognitive function.
You rock!🙂
Wish they delivered in India
hi Thomas, im just wondering, im cooking for my wife's lunch everyday in my fasted hours, does tasting and or chewing the food without swallowing it can break my fast?
TIA 😁
@ThomasDeLauer Is INULIN fine on keto??
So I've been doing keto for 4 weeks now and the first week I did the egg diet and I lost weight then I found out you can have net carbs I stayed in 20 and I started gaining back what I lost so I went back to total carbs and now I'm losing it again I don't understand what I'm doing wrong? Maybe because I was eating one bars and quest bars also Atkin bars that was messing me up and I couldn't resist I would snack on one each day
Do u check ketones? I check 60 min after I eat stuff like that to make sure I'm still in ketosis
Hello Thomas I'm starting omad keto do u recommend taking electrolytes
I did omad and keto and lost 109 lbs so far in 7 months felt great with no electrolytes
Mohammed Tafal I get headaches a lot drink tons of fluids but sometimes regular water is boring
Thank u
What is the word on starch vs resistant starch? Has that been debunked or should we be cooking and cooling our taters or pasta?
Thomas is keto. He doesn't eat pasta and potatoes.
Question: How do I know if I'm out of ketosis? Let's say I'm wrapping up a fast and my keytones are at 2.6. After eating I see they fall to 2.0 then 1.5 then 1.0. but they never fall any further. Did I not go out of ketosis because they didn't fall to zero or did I go out of ketosis because I have falling keytone numbers? thank you
Anything above .5 is ketosis. Falling ketones? Your body is using them to burn fat.
But by this method 100 g of flaxseed would contain close to 17g of carbs and it would be impossible to consider it keto friendly. And not just flaxseed, every other high fibre keto friendly food would have to be avoided.
So is fiber bad?
Not from fresh unprocessed foods.
