Hey Carb Dodgers! So I'm all about making videos that answer your common low carb diet questions! Got an idea for a video? Then drop it in the comment section below! :)
I am in UK, and lowthyroid (for about 24 years now) and have tried to lose weight since 1978 when I first heard of Dr Atkins Diet Revolution! I could get into ketosis, (used ketostix) but not lose any weight. I thought taking Levothyroxine would change things, but it didn't.
hello! what do you think about a video explaining why keto diet is recommended/or not if you have some diseases? like uric acid or thyroid? because of the protein etc! Thank you :) huge fã here!
Hi, a video on measuring and portion size would be great! I’ve just discovered the (magic) Keto way of eating this past two weeks and I do feel that I maybe overcomplicating things slightly regarding measuring and portion size. I’m wondering if using my hand as a guide to portion size would be easier than constantly measuring everything... which can quickly become time consuming and maybe off putting if you’re having one of those days where you’re not feeling as focused or are maybe eating out at a buffet for example. I understand that Keto, is a science that needs to be followed in certain way for it to be effective and that it also depends on your sex and what your aim is...but is there a quick way to measure food portion sizes? Thanks Dan. - Lisa (UK)
Hey Dan, I’m a new subscriber and absolutely loving your videos. Thank you! Im also new to Keto and IFS. I wondered if you could do a video about combining exercise with both? Eg. When is best to exercise? how best to sustain long runs or bike rides? what exercise is best to combine with both?
I think as a Diabetic (Type 2) i would like to know why you bought into the industry lie about net carbs.?? Diabetics should be looking at Total carbs! This Net carb BS is I fell mostly the food industry of trying to make their crappy foods look better than they are!!! Its fake advertising !
I'm just starting the keto world and was really confused about net carbs versus total carbs but you have absolutely simplified this in such an easy way thank you so much and needless to say I am definitely subscribed
Thanks a lot for this video and the heads up about net carbs. It helped me a lot with my current struggle. I’m new to trying keto, and i had difficulties to keep my carbs low.
Yes, in the UK we'll have to be careful with net carb numbers on labels. I used your Chia example via google then looked it up in Sainsburys and saw that Sainsburys separate out everything as separate line items - Chia still shows at 8g Carbs / 100g of seeds but it doesn't say its a net or gross or show any way it was calculated. I think I'd like it more if there was a bit more math shown, but I don't think I personally can get the food industry to change overnight on this!!!! Overall, a terrific video. All new knowledge to me and ultra helpful. FYI on day 6 of keto - flu hasn't been too bad as I've taken plenty of salts and stayed hydrated. Had the other symptoms in a mild form. Really quite excited how this is going to go over the next month
Hi, so i have a question I recently bought coconut flour which I heard it's great for keto, but I'm confused because it has 32g carbs and 45g fibre Is it considered a processed food ? To have the net carbs should I calculate 32-45 ? Does that mean it has 0 carbs ?
I was told by my doctor not to adhere to the keto diet because it's unhealthy. He said I should eat a diverse diet so I tried the Agoge diet and I am starting noticing less persistent belly fat really fast.
Hello Dr Dan, I am a new subscriber to your channel and your way of explaining things is amazing. Just wondering do you have video on healthy fats for vegetarians wanting to do keto? Regards.( Duganiv from Australia)
Well explained and straight to the point! Well I’m curious, I’m sure it varies, but is there a rule of them as to how many net carbs one should have to stay in nutritional ketosis? Thanks 🙏🏼
Isn’t fibre already separated from the carbs on labels in the uk? So, if it says you have 5g carbs and 2g fibre, then you actually still have 5g of carbs? Can you clear things up for my please. Love the videos and all the information, very much appreciated. Keep up the great work!
Hi I have a question about this so-called keto ice cream I bought. The label doesn’t make any sense at all and it does it says it has three net carbs per serving however when I add it up it doesn’t come out to three no matter which way I do it. It says total carbs per serving is 14 total g, fiber is 4 g, total sugars 0, then it says erythritol 3 g. So 14-4 is 10 and 10-3 equals seven. I don’t understand how they’re coming up with three net carbs . It just doesn’t make any sense can you please help me?
Thank you for this video. :) The only thing which confuses me, though thankfully, it isn't all that common, is when there's a nutrition label that has more fibre listed than the value of the carbs (e.g. The Foodie Market's Almonds: 9.1/100 carbs; 13/100 fibre?) I suppose it could be a misprint, though I have seen this quite a few times before.
I hardly ever eat anything processed any more. But, I am a little confused about the sugar alcohols. I sometimes use xylotol, and eurythritol, and allulose. You didn't mention allulose, which is what I have been using most recently. But, I am almost out of it, and money is kind of tight this month, so I was going to use the xylotol that I had before...until next month. I don't really use that much sweetener anymore. I used it when I first gave up sugar, and it really helped me get over the cravings gradually. Now, I hardly ever crave anything sweet. Just once in a great while. I made a little bit of a treat a couple of days ago with pure cocoa powder, coconut cream, xanthan gum, and a little allulose. But, that was the first time I made a sweet treat in I don't know how long. I am wondering about allulose now. About how it effects the blood sugar and insulin. I have been using it for at least 2 or 3 months, and my blood sugar seems a lot better than it was before. The last time I checked, it was 96. I don't use that much, though. Usually lately, I've just been putting a couple of scoops in a whole pot of coffee, and I've been drinking it otherwise black for almost a week. Sometimes it takes me two days to drink the whole pot of coffee.
Hi Dr. Maggs. Generally speaking, should people with Hashimotos (taking Levothyroxine) - and thinking of starting a low carb or keto diet - add salt to their meals when cooking and eating them? And if so, what type of salt should that be? e.g. Table salt, or Sea Salt? Fortified with Iodine or without Iodine? Finely ground or crystals? Many thanks in advance for your help.
excellent explanation, I use carb manager application that instantly reduces the fiber from the total carbs, but I have been told that in the UK the labels already indicate the net carb. Is this true?
yep - here's (count whole and processed foods differently) is where I've been tripping up. I have been using "(almost) zero net carb" tortillas. (5g total, 5g fiber) They do this by adding cellulose back into the dough. They still have a 1/3 of the total carbs than of regular tortillas, but if I do count the total carbs, I will be able to "get away with" a lot fewer of them and still stick to my very low carb goal. I've been in very light ketosis for a long time while having a couple of these with my breakfast. If I'm going to use this little crutch, I'll need to use it less - and I'll bet this will change things. This is really the only processed food I've been using.
Lucy Griffiths Cool! Interesting topic! Could do a series on this actually! What are antioxidants, X foods high in antioxidants, can you eat too many antioxidants etc... That kind of thing?
Thanks for the video it's really helpful. How do I know how many carbs is correct for me? I think I saw something about lean muscle and weight. My muscle is under fat at the moment 🤔
How many net carbs will I know to consume for a specific # in weights loss?? I want to lose 30lbs so how could I tweak my net carbs to better reach this goal?
Oh Boy Dan-- You Just Messed me up with that sugar alcohol stuff :-) I was not counting those , and I drink A LOT of bai drinks, which have stevia and erythritol....yikes ! thanks for info !
+Eli Magids Erythritol is probably the only one that isn’t absorbed from the gut! So you’re probably good with that one! Didn’t want to overload with info in the video!
Good video thanks for sharing. I follow the equation Net Carbs= Total - (fiber + 1/2 sugar alcohol) as well as monitor my glucose level so see how sugar alcohol effects me personally.
Oh what have I done wrong? I’ve been doing keto 5 months lost around 12 kilo..I was 75 kilo at the time I’m as skinny as I like :) ..all my life with full blood work every two year ( almost 60 yo) always had cholesterol come back about 4.5 my test this time after starting keto is now 7.8 grr I thought I had it all worked out and watched so many vids with info
In addition to my below comment, I want to relate something that just happened. It was either last night or the night before that I was watching this video of this rather young woman wo is in really good shape and lost weight using the CICO method. In my case it took decades. I wrote a whole long thing filled with knowledge I have learned from a combination of sources. One of those sources was the effects of metabolic damage that I caused myself over decades of eating the wrong things...sometimes out of ignorance and sometimes just negligence. And, the other sources are several doctors on RUclips who are well versed in nutrition. Those include Ken Berry, Eric Berg, Sten Ekberg, and most recently you. This woman read my entire comment out loud, and then went on to tell me that I am totally full of it, that carbs are necessary, that elevated blood sugar and insulin is perfectly natural, and that we need carbs for energy. She also admitted that she is no doctor or nutritionist. She insisted that if I am not losing weight...which I am actually starting to now...that I must be eating too much. The quantity that I have been eating is similar to what I am about to relate. I have never been a binge eater, but lately...the last few months, a typical day would be a can of spam for the entire day. Occasionally, I can't even finish the whole can. I haven't had fast food for about 2 years. I have given up bread and cereal and potatoes and sugar and pasta, etc. But, I was drinking too much milk up until 2 or 3 or maybe 4 months ago. Since, I gave up milk, my sugar has started coming down, and I have actually started losing weight. Not as fast as I would like, but losing none the less. The reason I am telling you all this, is because that woman made me really angry. That CICO crap always makes me angry when I hear it, and it also makes me angry when people put out lies and Misinformation while claiming that I am the one doing that. She can keep on eating bananas and other high sugar crap all she wants, but she will no doubt learn the hard way, just like I did. In her case, though, it might be even worse, she could end up with full fledged diabetes instead of pre-diabetes, and it could happen a lot quicker than it did with me, because I wasn't ever really that regular a fruit eater. It was just a once in a while thing for me. She could also end up with non alcoholic fatty liver disease, because she thinks bananas are healthy and that there is nothing wrong with elevated insulin. She thinks that is a perfectly natural thing. I must apologize for the rant. But, like I already said...she made me angry, so I kind of needed to vent about it to someone who doesn't agree with her.

I appreciate your explanation of only using net carbs with real foods; and, total carbs for any processed foods. Very helpful.
Huh, you know if tortillas are considered processed? I've been using them daily on keto, a really specific type with 15g carbs but 5g bet
Brian Crosby, Unfortunately, with your tortillas, you’re suppose to only count the total carbs, not the net carbs.
I'm just starting the keto world and was really confused about net carbs versus total carbs but you have absolutely simplified this in such an easy way thank you so much and needless to say I am definitely subscribed

Things like this are so much more straightforward with a formula - I'm sure this info will help people!
Thank You Kinga! :)
I get the calculation, thanks. My only question is, why didn't you include the grams of sugar underneath the fibre in your calculation?
What if the label says "fiber" instead of "dietary fiber" do you still subtract it??
I’ve been doing keto. And this is so helpful! Thanks for sharing! Great video!
Thanks! Appreciate your comment :)

So when you did the broccoli as a example and got 4.4 net carbs, does that mean that’s how many net carbs for the whole broccoli?
No, per 100g

What’s the best way to calculate your macros doing it wrong please help
So for calculating net carbs in the uk do I deduct the ‘of which sugars’ part away from total carbs?
Hi Dr Dan, I read somewhere that the formula is total carbs - finer - had sugar alcohol, can you confirm as your video said just fiber
Isn’t fibre already separated from the carbs on labels in the uk? So, if it says you have 5g carbs and 2g fibre, then you actually still have 5g of carbs?
Can you clear things up for my please. Love the videos and all the information, very much appreciated. Keep up the great work!
Yes, I believe so. That goes for other European countries as well

How do I know how much net carbs I should consume per day
How do you account for added sugar? Kchava 25g carbs, 7g of fiber, and 6g of added sugar.
Added sugar, no specific kind of added sugar listed.
This was very helpful!
what if there is more fiber listed then cabs? ex. cabs 7.5g then bellow: fiber 14.2g
I have protein bread.... 6g carbs and 11g fiber... per 100g... so my carbs are in minus ?
Very clear explanation!
Dover Thank you :-)
