That is true. A person, I think Germany or somewhere in Europe, drank nothing but beer during Lent. At the end, he lost a decent amount of weight. Beer is loaded with carbs and calories so I think the reason he lost weight was because his body wasn't using them. He probably (assumption) was malnourished. I started keto to lose weight but the more I learn about it, I am sticking with it for health reasons.

If it's what goes in your bloodstream, then net carbs *do* count. If you're eating something wit 5g of net carbs and 4g of that is fiber, only 1g will hit your bloodstream, aka 1g of net carbs. And, if it's about getting to zero carbs, how can you say vegetables are free?!? They have carbs that enter your mouth, and a bit fewer that enter your bloodstream.

Let's take a typical avocado. 17 grams of carbs - 10 grams of fibre = 7 net carbs. That's what I count. Otherwise my avocado/kale/arugula salad puts me over 20 total carbs, and kicks me out of ketosis. Which it doesn't. The lesson, as always is eat real food and avoid ANY processed food (including pre-packaged keto snacks), along with starchy vegetables and sweet fruits.

  • @ryanpertusio
    @ryanpertusio 4 года назад +14

I'm supportive of your work, and your great interviews on the "Low Carb MD" podcast!
However, I think you're over-simplifying that "your body doesn't calculate net carbs". Your body can't do math (you're right), but it certainly handles various carbohydrate in different ways.
Example: Manufacturer XYZ invents a 'SawDust Bar" made up of 20g of sawdust and 2g of artificial sweetener:
    22g total carbohydrate
    - 20g insoluble fiber
    - 2g of artificial sweetener
    = 0 net carb
Your video says that my body is going to treat the 20g of sawdust the same way as the 2g of artificial sweetener.
Here's where I think you're right (this and other videos): The 2g of artificial sweetener is the problem...
    * Insulin rises from the sweetener (causing you to eat more SawDust bar)
    * Dopamine 'hit' (causing you to go to the cabinet between meals for your SawDust bar)
In my opinion, your video should really be saying:
    * It's the "innocent 2g of sweetener" that is the problem (it isn't a 'free' sweetener)
    * Manufacturers treat all non-nutritive alcohols/sweeteners as if they truly have 0 net carbs, but it's a sliding scale
    * Sweeteners have different psychological/addictive and physiological effects for different people
    * It's a considerable amount of (often wasted) effort/time to find out what your body can handle
    * Therefore, be careful, and it's highly recommended to stick to "total carbs" (to be sure, and make it easier for yourself), OR travel down the difficult path of meticulously deriving what works for your body.

Remember, this is a channel about carb addiction, not perfecting the Keto diet. I see the doctor’s point, using his alcoholic analogy. If you struggle with obesity and/or Type 2 diabetes, you should probably look at total carbs and make the binary decision whether or not to put something into your mouth. Net carbs becomes a slippery slope that may get a carb addict off track.

I completely agree that Keto snacks, bars with sugar alcohols and processed Keto items that give you net carbs are false and will get you into trouble on your weightloss journey. However, if 100% of your carbs come from moderate fruits and veggies the fiber in them netted out never got me in trouble. I also think your statement that veggies are free is a slippery slope if you are following Keto. Too many veggies does slow you down, causes bloat and will definitely slow down your weightloss and ketones. I think many people eat a lot of the so called Keto products and incorporate the fake sugars and that is tough for the body to handle when you are insulin resistant.

I am not trying to make excuses here This is a legitimate question. Are you saying that counting net carbs is a way that people eat the ready-made keto snacks that are available? I only eat real foods, homemade stuff. But again, if I counted total carbs, my avocado, nuts, and vegetables would put me over the top of my limit. I lost 36 pounds in 30 days doing Atkins new diet revolution in the 90s (20 TOTAL carbs). Ive been doing todays "keto" for 4 months (20 NET carbs) and just reached 36 pounds. Keto is more flexible in food options but is flawed as it doesnt account for total carbs. I dont care what your macros are; if you eat more than 50 total carbs it will be very difficult to maintain ketosis. Ive had days where net was under 20 but total was over 90! I just started lowering to under 50 total and am losing a half pound a day.

I have to drink 2 heaping tablespoons of Psyllium Husk 2 times a day. If I count the 14 grams of carbohydrates - there is little other vegetables I can eat. Net Carbs would assign 2 carbs for this amount of Psyllium Husk. Do you see the problem with counting all carbs???

So don’t eat avocados, flax or chia seeds because they’re high in total carbs? They’re mostly non digestible fiber and have a negligible impact on blood sugar or insulin levels. No offense but this is why people say keto is a cult. I think your recommendation should be to avoid processed “keto” foods where the label has been manipulated to suggest they’re low carb. Telling people to go carnivore or restrict fiber intake is completely insane.

It is currently just too difficult for people to stay keto without at least eating some products that are "net carbs". Yes, if I had the luxury of being home for the rest of my days and making food from scratch, I would get rid of net carbs. But I don't. I have to leave my home and eat outside of it. And given the durth of options out there... net carb foods are a life saver. I expect to retire within 10 years and then, you bet it will be homemade food without processed food.

I will still overeat on calories, most likely, but I‘ll still be in ketosis at least and can seamlessly go back to my regular food. But as part of my regular everyday diet? No way. I’d never manage, to loose any weight, if I had artificially tempting food like that around.

All I have to say is that I use Net Carbs. The fiber goes right through you, so why count it? Also, going by your total carb approach, I would being eating a lot smaller portions. And I don't eat big portions now. Using Net Carbs I have lowered my A1C from 6.3 to 5.1 as tested by my doctor. I have also lost 65lbs. I don't give a hoot about Ketosis. I just want to no longer be pre-diabetic. Are you also gonna tell me that I am still Pre-Diabetic? I have met my goals and am healthier. My goal was to lower my A1C and using Net Carbs did it for me.

I'm not hearing a convincing argument, though you say there are many, as to why we shouldn't be counting net carbs. You acknowledge that carbs from the fiber aren't utilized by the body but are a "magical number." If the number of fiber carbs is a magical number, so must the total carbs be a magical number. I don't get it.

Fiber wasn't even on packaging back them. • @Puglover130

I get the concept and know you are correct for the most part re: net carbs. To the extent that you’re eating a keto lookalike “brownie” or “protein bar” or ANYthing you’re prone to overeat or eat when not hungry, is bad no matter how few net carbs it has.
However I have a question. In some other videos you say low cal sweetener is fine in coffee or crystal lite . Well, I don’t care for Equal or sweet n low or stevia. I use erythritol or erythritol/ monkfruit or sometimes Splenda syrup.
The erythritol is a SA and therefore has “total” carbs . so would it be fine in coffee as long as I don’t use it as a crutch in fake foods ? I don’t over drink coffee or drinks for a sugar alcohol buzz , I just think other sweetener have a gross flavour.

Mostly agree but in my experience total net calories do absolutely make a difference. I track calories in and calories out through exercise. When my daily net calories creep up so does my weight, so by all means go Keto but you still need manage how much food you consume. Also get off your butt and move!

Dr. Cywes, I like your other videos, but you need to make it more clear if you are talking about moving away from net carbs vs total carbs to meet your carb addiction diet or for good health in general. What about people that are not carb addicted, or do you think everyone is carb addicted? Also, in order for me to believe someone on the internet, I don't care about their degrees. I only care about strong evidence. Thus, please cite randomized controlled studies that measure ketones and their results regarding net vs total carbs. If you can't cite evidence, then it is just one person's assumptions.
