    I think I may have an explanation of why the studies flip flop back and forth on the effects of diet on testosterone. As you said, the most important thing for testosterone levels is cholesterol and it seems from the studies that our body wants to produce around 3000mg per day. But hold on! That is only if the body has the available energy! So if you are not eating at least 3000mg of cholesterol per day, your body has to make up the extra with its own liver conversion via excess calories. On a high carb diet, these calories come from sugar, however on a ketogenic diet you would have to be consuming the cholesterol directly or consuming enough saturated fats to convert to cholesterol. Hence, if any diet fails to provide either the necessary cholesterol or the calories to produce said cholesterol then testosterone will drop. This points to one thing and one thing only. A calorie surplus is the primary driver of testosterone.

    • @kasimirb5155
      @kasimirb5155 4 года назад +1

      Sounds solid. But how is it that in that latest mentioned study the participants ate (assumedly) enough calories (from carbs) and cholesterol and yet they suffered from a decrease in testosterone?

      @@kasimirb5155 I was wondering this too. There’s also another factor at play: since keto induces fat loss, your body has less adipose tissue to produce estrogen from. Less estrogen means your body is diverting the rest of its cholesterol into testosterone production. What I’m still curious about is whether that last group was, presumably, on a calorie surplus or not…

      Keto didn't save you, cutting out the grains did. Carbohydrates are ok to consume in forms of fruit, and some people tolerate a2 dairy and honey, a smaller amount of people do well on sweet potatoes and yams. But the grains were the main issue, since you cut out bread, rice, pasta and all that junk you feel better. Not all carbs are the same

There has been many cases where Keto and Carnivore proponents have LOW testosterone on their bloodwork. But we all have different physiologies and what matters in the end is how much our diets help us fulfill what we want to accomplish in life.

      Exactly. I am on day 3 of the Keto diet and although I am free of PCOS, I wish to balance my hormones even better. I thought that the Keto diet balances the hormones because insulin is low and doesn't mess them up. I wonder if Keto raises testosterone in individuals who had less to begin with. This reminds me of Maca. Left and right I hear that it improves libido. But the doctors I respect claim that it is an adaptogenic herb and if one had a low libido, taking Maca may rase, but for someone with already balanced hormones Maca is not going to increase anything. That is what I've heard so far...but conflicting information is everywhere.

    • @User-pz4re
      @User-pz4re 2 года назад

      @@zauberschurke4012 Cholesterol can only do so much for testosterone, you would have to consume a gigantic amount of cholesterol, almost a pure fat diet, if you want optimal testosterone with just meat. Because too much protein in and of itself kills testosterone, and consuming fat without the protein would be hard to do. So fruit or some honey possibly would help with testosterone levels, I'm not saying eat 20 mangos a day but some would be a good addition. At least it's not grains

    I accept this study but here's the thing carb or insulin plays a vital role in flow of free testorone in blood stream so it can further bind with testosterone receptors. only 1 percent of overall testosterone is used for muscle building no matter how high the testosterone is in general. so i would conclude that a PCF ratio of 30/30/40 of overall calories is one always stick to as at the end it's the consistency that matters most.

    There are 2 types of LDL cholestrol. Type A and Type B. A high Type A comes from Saturated fats which are not bad. A high type B on the other hand comes from too much sugar so being in ketosis will dramatically decrease the type B LDL which when too high is bad. It can clog arteries since it tries to heal your body.

    You state that Keto actually raises testosterone, yet the article you site suggests the complete opposite :
    "Lastly, testosterone production is signaled from the brain via another hormone called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). GnRH itself is regulated by the amount of circulating glucose. Roland et al [6] found in their study that when glucose was present in high levels, GnRH stimulated T production, but when glucose depleted, T synthesis started to decrease."

      That's a good one. my thoughts is that keto diet only lowers testosterone during the adaptation phase. And u need carbs with creatine to load glycogen stores which will then increases DHT levels, as you loose muscle glycogen your DHT decreases, but keto has the ability to make muscles preserve glycogen..
      So so confusing.. YET.

    • @Joao-ur7ey
      @Joao-ur7ey 4 года назад

      Increase fat. Consume fatty cuts of, meat, bacon, eggs until satiation. And wait. On the adaptation process it's normal for you testosterone levels to decrease and your cholesterol rise a little. The time of this process varies from person to person. It can last two weeks or even three months.
      One thing that I suspect that speed up the process is fasting/omad, while doing exercises on the fasting period. Don't overdo it, tho.

    Another great video. After reading comments below, it seems that medicine's next path is to train us to use reliable tests along with a greater ability to read our bodies -- in order to understand what's best for us, e.g., Keto vs Low Carb. There are simply some days that I need to eat a baked potato with the skin on it -- and a few days/2 weeks later that episode does not result in weight gain, if anything it contributes to weight loss and improved sleep. My adrenals are messed up due to poor stress management, and getting back on track has taught me to absorb info, take saliva testing for hormones (don't rely on blood tests because serum is limited in capturing the true hormonal process), and then listen to my body. We all have an amazing doctor inside -- we just need to know how to talk to it.

      Long term keto diet shuts down your thyroid function and increases stress hormones...
      I have high testosterone with a crazy deep voice and I eat about 30 - 40 % fats (mostly saturated and monounsaturated fats) , 40 - 50 % carbs (from whole ripe fruits, raw honey, raw grass fed dairy, white rice, tubers, some sourdough bread etc...) and rest protein.
      I did low/no carb for YEARS and it destroyed my metabolism.
      Keto works at first, because it mimics fasting and cuts out all the gut damaging foods.

    I've seen information on internet that fasting can be detrimental to increasing Testosterone levels. Any truth to that? I am a 54 year old man and have been dealing with low T for some time. I have been doing IF as often as I can and now I have concerns about doing Intermittent Fasting. I would like to try to increase my T level naturally if possible.

      Luis Garcia find your maintenance caloric level and eat there for 21 days to a month. You won't gain nor lose fat, you'll just maintain. Then go back into a caloric deficit by 500 calories and it'll help!

    I appreciate your approach with providing studies backing the potential benefits but as you know not all scientific studies are good studies. A study with 26 participants is difficult to trust as convincing evidence. I am not saying there is not potential to learn from this but I would be skeptical of drawing real conclusions with such a small sample size

      Another pitfall of diet studies is that while it is easy to find subjects in long-term high carb diets, it is very hard to get subjects on long-term (> six months), well-formulated whole foods keto diet. There are just too few of us. This is why you have to look at the options and experiment with your own, find the diet and lifestyle appropriate to your activity and genetics, don't wait for all of the (often biased) studies to deliver the magic One Right Answer.

    Hey Tom read the 2nd half of that first link again, it contradicts what you stated about ketogenic diet. There were numerous studies in the first link. The one you based your claim were 26 college age males lifting weights. Not knocking the survey but adds confusion. It sounds like low carb that isn't full keto

      Fabian Ojeda He did. That leaves you with 2 choices. High carb or full ketosis? The 30% study was 1 of 6 studies in the link. The conclusion was keto lowered T. Eating a banana or apple can knock you into a whole negative bio chain. Just confused.

      Thomas is great, and also most other Keto presenters. But they are not objective.
      Keto/IF can't be the golden solution for everything. Life just isn't so simple.
      Still, let's engineer a solution 😋...continue Keto (I like it due to my bs/insulin levels stay low) but remember the minerals supplements and add ashwagandha which lowers cortisol. Long shot, right?
