As an Aussie I agree with the other Aussies, you need to find John’s live performances, his voice, his backing singers, his band, his banter with the audience & just his commanding presence on stage, all that combined & you will fully understand why we Aussies call him “The Voice”.

You haven’t heard this unofficial Australian national anthem until you’re in an Aussie pub at 1am and everyone is singing it together at the tops of their lungs 🇦🇺
"We're not going to sit in silence. We're not going live with fear" 😂 It could be considered the unofficial Australian national anthem before the last three years when Australians bowed down to its national government's and state governments' draconian BS over Covid. The last country in the world that anyone who knows anything about Australia and the attitude that Australians were always famed for would think would agree to be locked down and be injected unnecessarily for a coronavirus. What is Australia now? South China? A coronavirus. Jesus wept! Do you even know what one of those is? You have more chance of dying walking down the stairs than from a coronavirus. "We're not going to sit in silence. We're not going live with fear", my backside!
This was his comeback song in the mid-1980’s. He was considered to be all washed up and couldn’t get funding for the album. His manager mortgaged his own house to raise funds to get the album recorded. It is the second biggest selling album in Australia although had limited success overseas. Farnham still tours and has an amazing stage presence. He is much loved within Australia.
Whispering Jack was in the European charts back in 1986, I could get the album in every shop and the Voice was number one in several countries and at least in the top 20s all over the world. I remeber hearing "The Voice" in one of Germany's chart shows and bought the album. I think Whispering Jack was one of the first albums I have bought myself. After all this years I can still know the lyrics and sing along everytime it is on air. As much as I love "the Voice" I like "Age of reasons" a little bit more.
@@althelas He was Top 10 in Denmark, Germany and lots of other European countries. Everyone was amazed he didn't do America. He said "Why do I want to be a little fish in a big sea". He was happy with the success he had .

And bloody hell ... YES ... he is still alive and still singing in his 70s now. I can't imagine a time we won't hear John's voice. Love him to bits.
"You're The Voice" is wildly popular in Australia, where it is considered the unofficial national anthem. It was written, though, by a team of British songwriters led by Chris Thompson, who was the lead singer in Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Thompson wrote it with Andy Qunta and Maggie Ryder,
John’s smile is so much a part of his great personality and effortless. He is a true Aussie that laughs with you, at you and most importantly, at himself. Ofcourse being the same age I feel I can say, respectfully, “and so badass handsome.”
Yes Matt this song was written especially for John and his incredible voice and BTW he is still alive but retired, I'm so glad you are discovering the wonderful talent we have down under in Australia you must really find some more songs and performances of guy Sebastian who is our current incredible song writer and performer that we have pride in John was active through the 70s 80s and 90s real glad your appreciating the enormous talent we have and being a musician as I am also I'm really enjoying the fact that you can feel and appreciate the depths of the musical talent beyond the surface of the songs thank you for that it's a beautiful thing to have your soul affected by music..
It was written by a team of British songwriters led by Chris Thompson, who was the lead singer in Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Thompson wrote it with Andy Qunta and Maggie Ryder, who were writers from his publishing company. The song was inspired by a protest march for nuclear disarmament that took place in London's Hyde Park on October 25, 1985, the day they started writing the song. Thompson planned on attending the march, but overslept; he, Qunta and Ryder watched it on TV while they were writing the song.
John is retired, but still doing gigs in regional areas and special events. He is in his 70s now but his voice has never changed. He's still awesome to listen to no matter what the song.
Yes John Is still alive and well down under. He is affectionally known as "The Voice" here. The song You're the voice is our unofficial National Anthem here in Australia "" is a song written by Andy Qunta, Keith Reid, Maggie Ryder and Chris Thompson, and recorded by the Australian singer John Farnham and released as a single in September 1986 ahead of his album . "You're the Voice" was one of the biggest hits of 1986 in Australia, topping the Kent Music Report singles chart for seven weeks from 3 November to 21 December. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1987 it won Single of the Year.
The song is from the album Whispering Jack, which is the second-best selling album in Australia and best by an Australian artist. It sold 1.7 million copies in 1986 when the population was only 16 million. Australia's current population is 26 million.
As every Aussie will tell you, we love John, a legend here in Oz, Lol this song back in the day would have me winding the car window down, volume up full throttle and wanting the world to hear this message...just sad that it's still so irrelevant today!! His such a humble beautiful soul as well.
I watched another music channel break this song down and explain why it's so difficult to sing. John makes it sound easy but it's not, and that is obvious when you hear anyone else attempt it. And yes, always worth seeking out live performances of John.
Yes alive yes a living legend yes his song and voice will live in forever with this song and many many many many other beautiful and meaningful songs he has done. Great Australian.
John Farnham was born in England, move to Australia when he was very young. He was trained as a plumber, but decided to became a singer. He is retired, but still performed here and there. Thank you, Matt for your reaction. We loved John Farnham in the Land of Aussies.
There are so many great Australian artists, check out The Angels, Hoodoo Guru's, Midnight Oil, Rose Tattoo, The Divinyls, Paul Kelly, Nick Cave, Jimmy Barnes, Pseudo Echo......... and so many more.
It was written by Andy Qunta who played the keytar with another great Aussie band Icehouse. This was his comeback song and has since been known simply as The Voice
You're the Voice " is a song written by Andy Qunta, Keith Reid, Maggie Ryder and Chris Thompson, and recorded by the Australian singer John Farnham and released as a single in September 1986 ahead of his album Whispering Jack.
John Farnham is that greatly overused word - he is a true icon of Australian music. And as amazing as his voice is, he is an even more amazing person. So proud to have been a Farnham fan for many years. YES, he is still alive.
He is known as "The Voice" and you can see why. His concerts are just amazing and he is much loved here in Oz. I think John is about 70 now and gave his last concert about 2 years back before Covid struck. He sang with Queen and was as great as ever!
Love John Farnham. He still sings as brilliantly as he did when he was young. We Aussies love him. He’s in his early 70’s now. Still as funny and lovely as ever. Tina NEILSEN.♥️
The song was written by Andy Qanta (Keyboardist in the popular Aussie band, Icehouse), Maggie Ryder (musician and backing singer for bands such as Queen and Eurythmics), and English guitarist Chris Thompson.
He had announced his retirement a number of times before that. One of his comeback was as the support act for Whitney Houston in the 1980s. She was awful. He was brilliant.
we all turn up - who doesn't love a good farewell tour - a standing joke for a bloke we all love - bring back the farewell tour one last time haha - John would love taking the P155 on himself
You need to View live performances, his reactions with his audiences. John always pays tribute to his fans & his band who are all talented professionals in their own right. Get the feeling that John he is well loved yes definatly Still going strong
No he didn't write it...English artist Chris Thomson who also sings it wrote it with 3 other writers. 1986. John's most successful recording was a hit in UK, Germany, Scandinavia, Canada and of course Aust NZ. Also popular in some South American countries.
Hmm, the scene with the couple arguing is a younger Jackie Weaver; an Australian actor best known overseas for "Animal Kingdom" (2010), "Silver Linings Playbook" (2012), and "Bird Box" (2018). The guy she's arguing with is her ex-husband one-time Australian radio star and later an Australian federal politician, Deren Hinch. This is like a trip down memory lane.
John Farnham is very much still alive. He was born in 1949 in Dagenham, Essex, England and moved to Australia with his family when he was ten years old.
Yes he still very much alive, and sings as good as ever . John is the best singer Australia has ever had, with Guy Sebastian not far behind him ,which you really need to check out.
You have to check out Johnny Farnham - Sadie (The Cleaning Lady) (1967) his first television performance.. He was a plumber here in Adelaide my Grandfather worked with his Dad and John plumbing and he told me stories about John Farnham but i never met him i was not born at that time..
It was written by Chris Thompson (lead singer of Manfred Mann's Earth Band) with Andy Qunta and Maggie Ryde. It was written while they watched a protest march for nuclear Disarmament.
"" is a song written by Andy Qunta, Keith Reid, Maggie Ryder and Chris Thompson, and recorded by the Australian singer John Farnham and released as a single in September 1986 ahead of his album .
This is an 80s song, when us Australians, Americans and Kiwis were still trying to come to terms with our involvement in Vietnam but with the Cold War still front and centre. John Farnham is an extremely talented vocalist! Can I suggest Redgum/John Schumann’s “I was only 19”? A very lyrically powerful song based on one man’s real experiences…
That's his natural sound! At 70 yrs of age he sang early last year as part of a benefit concert after the Australian catastrophic bushfires over our Summer: he can still sing like that! Absolute legend!! His 1985 anthemic hit "You're the Voice" was huge in the former Communist bloc in the late 80s/early 90s as the Soviet Union was in the process of collapse and the satellite states took it on as an freedom anthem. Check out his songs "You're the Voice", his cover of Cold Chisel's "When the War is Over", and go from there down the rabbit-hole - enjoy, peace x
Chris Thompson was the Writer of this Song He sent John a Copy of it and Then John got to work He tried the whole song in falsetto and Said it was extremely Poor and Weak so he tried it again with just his normal Natural Singing Voice and Boom it Worked Then a music Legend was Born But John Farnham is the Original Singer of this Song But Chris Thompson Wrote the Song ....I personally think No one does this song Better than John Farnham lots of people have Tried American Rock Band HEART made a version of You're the Voice but Their Version didn't gain as much success as John's original The Alan Parsons Project Did a Version of it but It wasnt a Successful hit for them so lots of People Have Tried pulling this song off and Failed Miserably This song is only Fit For John Farnhams Voice No one elses ❤
I’m just gonna suggest you watch live performances first because you’ll be disappointed with the recording. He’s an absolute legend and is better live then recorded so much more powerful puts his whole heart into each song.
Emily you are bang on with this comment! His live performances are equally as good if not better in my opinion. I've actually been to see him live in concert twice and I was blown away by how good his voice is! He legitimately sounds as good live as he does in his recordings.
Your the voice was written by Andy Quinta, Keith Reid, Maggie Ryder and Chris Thompson, of BMG music I believe it was given to John Farnham in Australia and I think Heart in the US.
Co written by Chris Thompson ex Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Lead on their hit Blinded By The Light in the mid 1970s. Andy Qunta from Icehouse is another writer.

Or singing with Tom Jones.....powerful stuff. You won't regret it and I hope it makes you feel great. All the best and keep up the good work (and keep those Aussie artists coming lol). Thanks.
John was dubbed 'The Voice' after this release. We love John in Aus ... his voice, his passion and interpretation are perfect. Thanks for reacting to this. Classic piece of music and timeless lyrics. And bloody hell ... YES ... he is still alive and still singing in his 70s now. I can't imagine a time we won't hear John's voice. Love him to bits.
This brings me back to 80s too...I spent my childhood listening to this. You're right...good times!
"You're The Voice" is wildly popular in Australia, where it is considered the unofficial national anthem. It was written, though, by a team of British songwriters led by Chris Thompson, who was the lead singer in Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Thompson wrote it with Andy Qunta and Maggie Ryder,
Greatest Aussie artist ever. If you can, react to his live videos. Studio doesn’t do him justice.
He is known as the Voice down under check out him n jimmy Barnes singing together when something is wrong with my baby. Barnsey is a rock legend
I thought I was the Only one on this planet who felt the impact of "Barnsey and Farmsey!!👏❤
I love that one with Barnsey and Diesel... very compelling viewing
John’s smile is so much a part of his great personality and effortless. He is a true Aussie that laughs with you, at you and most importantly, at himself. Ofcourse being the same age I feel I can say, respectfully, “and so badass handsome.”
Love love this song!!!
The year Michael Jackson toured...Farnham outsold him for concert tickets! He is a legend.
Yes he's still alive. And it was such a joy hearing you pronounce his last name correctly. You have no idea how many US reactors say it wrongly
This never gets old. It's magnificent ❤️
As every Aussie will tell you, we love John, a legend here in Oz, Lol this song back in the day would have me winding the car window down, volume up full throttle and wanting the world to hear this message...just sad that it's still so irrelevant today!! His such a humble beautiful soul as well.
This song from the Melbourne live concert is an absolutely amazing performance . . . . Sooooo much better live.
He's a class act our John 💕💕
Farnsy is a legend! He is the voice.
I watched another music channel break this song down and explain why it's so difficult to sing. John makes it sound easy but it's not, and that is obvious when you hear anyone else attempt it.
And yes, always worth seeking out live performances of John.
He's still with us God bless him
So funny that you saluted the bagpipe player because in one of his live performances he did exactly that!
A friend was the bagpipe player at one of his gigs
The lyrics of this song have huge meaning during this time we are currently living in.
He's only retired from touring, he still does small appearances
Great song, grew up with him. Love your view on it.
He is known as "The Voice" and you can see why. His concerts are just amazing and he is much loved here in Oz. I think John is about 70 now and gave his last concert about 2 years back before Covid struck. He sang with Queen and was as great as ever!
Yes, he is still alive he just turned 71 I think or 72. He is still with us. Thank goodness. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🇦🇺
Love John Farnham. He still sings as brilliantly as he did when he was young. We Aussies love him. He’s in his early 70’s now. Still as funny and lovely as ever. Tina NEILSEN.♥️
We Aussies have a bunch of songs we all know the words to and sing them at the top of our lungs. We call them pub anthems. This is one of them.
He is still alive. He is 73 and sings this song for charity benefits and amazingly his voice has not changed at all. He is the GOAT.
John Farnham is a legend here in Australia. Check out his live video of the Beatles song Help.
Agreed. Great performance.
The song was written by Andy Qanta (Keyboardist in the popular Aussie band, Icehouse), Maggie Ryder (musician and backing singer for bands such as Queen and Eurythmics), and English guitarist Chris Thompson.
John originally announced his retirement with a farewell tour in 2002 and there have been many farewell tours since then, lol.
No he didn't, he announced his retirement from regular touring.
Like all Aussies we love live music that's what we do best, farnham is amazing live
No he didn't write it...English artist Chris Thomson who also sings it wrote it with 3 other writers. 1986. John's most successful recording was a hit in UK, Germany, Scandinavia, Canada and of course Aust NZ. Also popular in some South American countries.
Coward. Dick.
John Farnham is the Voice 🇦🇺
John Farnham is very much still alive.
He was born in 1949 in Dagenham, Essex, England and moved to Australia with his family when he was ten years old.
Yes he still very much alive, and sings as good as ever . John is the best singer Australia has ever had, with Guy Sebastian not far behind him ,which you really need to check out.
That’s not just a song; that’s an ANTHEM!
You have to check out Johnny Farnham - Sadie (The Cleaning Lady) (1967) his first television performance.. He was a plumber here in Adelaide my Grandfather worked with his Dad and John plumbing and he told me stories about John Farnham but i never met him i was not born at that time..
Thanks mate!.
He is a dead set legend!.
Zebedee,
Aussie.👍
It was written by Chris Thompson (lead singer of Manfred Mann's Earth Band) with Andy Qunta and Maggie Ryde. It was written while they watched a protest march for nuclear Disarmament.
"" is a song written by Andy Qunta, Keith Reid, Maggie Ryder and Chris Thompson, and recorded by the Australian singer John Farnham and released as a single in September 1986 ahead of his album .
Been listening to this for 40 years and just realised that those long, pure vocal notes did not have the benefit of autotune.
Written by Andy Qunta, Keith Reid, Maggie Ryder and Chris Thompson, all are established musicians and songwriters.
Please do Burn For You by John. Beautiful
Another Australian Legend
It was written for John specifically for his "Whispering jack Album"... Album is so 80"s lol
How do you make Elvis leave the stage with his tail between his legs?
Put John Farnham on the stage.
It’s not only war it’s also telling people not to put up with abuse whether it’s domestic or bullying at school or the work place
Co written by Chris Thompson ex Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Lead on their hit Blinded By The Light in the mid 1970s. Andy Qunta from Icehouse is another writer.
Go live, never this way, go live.
Hey matey I’m
Australian and yeah john Farnham is our music hero. Your video came up on my recommended. You Sir are a bit cute I most say. Beautiful smile. Cheers 🥂
good to see Yanks starting to appreciate Aussie music
I think it was written for him. He definitely was the first to record it!
John didn't write the song.. it was written by Andy Qunta, Keith Reid, Maggie Ryder and Chris Thompson. But, it suited him perfectly. I'm proud to be an Australian with such a timeless artist such as John Farnham.
