Hey man, trust me when I say we feel the same way... it comes off as a real money grab and they want u to give more money as donations when u get in. It's very strange but I assume it's a historical landmark and it's for upkeep and maintenance more than anything else... at least I'd like to hope so.
There’s no entrance fee during mass hours or when you specifically come for prayers. However this basilica is a historical monument situated in the touristic zone, entrance fees serve to renovate and maintenance. It also dissuades anyone to freely step in to take a look per curousity disregarding its solemn worshipping place character.
