- I duscuss the faulty assembly that resulted in the near destruction of this engine. While the proper treatment of the timing tensioner isn't listed with Mercedes Benz workshop information under cylinder head removal it can be found else where. Sometimes you just gotta know.
From Wales, UK - It's a pleasure to watch you working on this - methodical and gentle. I was surprised how easy the head came off. I have to do the same job on my 97' C250 Turbo Diesel soon. Thanks for the vid and upload. Greetings G.Evans
Thanks for tuning in. Good luck on the Diesel.
i just love these engines. and i would really like to see you pull the engine completely apart and do the piston rings, crank bearings etc. great explanations!
you are a real pro! i have an '84 audi ur quattro coupe that i will be rebuilding. i hope to see more of your videos soon, rob
Wait! You lined up the timing marks on the damper and cam sprockets and took the spring out of the chain tensioner. No problem The camera shot changed and you were removing the head bolts. You skipped over how the cams and sprockets are removed and that's precisely what I was hoping to see.
I don't recommend timing chain replacement unless you are beginning to get some ratteling at start up or after an oil service. To do it correctly the cylinder head must come off. If it does rattle after an oil service, pre-lube the tensioner by removing the coil wire to pump up the tensioner before start up. Then, don't forget to reload or replace the tensioner properly.
Awesome background music 🙏👍
Manual says: Install tensioner case in block (setbolt removed pushing in the working direction) to 15 nm, install setbolt, push in, install spring and cap with ring gasket in place at 70 nm.
The tear down and the reason for the engine rebuild. A few insights into the chain, tensioner and camshaft timing.
WHAT ENGINE IS THIS ONE , I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE APART A 111 ENGINE ABOUT A WEEK AGO AND IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO FIGURE IT OUT THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER . GREAT INFO , GREAT VIDEO.
THANKS
One of the most interesting discoveries I made was that there are EFI systems available out there. Don't know it the Cos head would fit. My guess is that you would pay dearly for one and there are allot of more cost effective options for you out there.
no, only the 2.5-16v have the duplex chain. all the the 2.3 have a simplex chain, that you have to replace every 180k km's and every 90k km's you have to replace the timing tensioner ...
I think ratcheting cam chain tensioner only came out subsequent to the build of your engine? Apparently a not optimal oil pressure relief valve that sometimes jams closed causes hydraulic tensioner to over force tensioners and then ratcheting tensioner locks way to tight. Latest is to eliminate hydraulics and have a simple mechanical tensioner. Did u break the water pipe in the process of removal? Nice video.
realy great! love the project, I also have a 2.3 190 myselft though its just an 8 valve.
I would also like to increase the power of it, so im wondering if maybe a 16 valve top would fit? or might as well turbo charge it. Its realy great you told about that tensioner, I dont think i would have thought of that when taking the block appart :)
You might check out a tech school in your area. We have Bellingham Tech where my good friend Dan Beeson heads up the Automotive Dept.
hope you got more videos.. I got my project started last labor day.. doing the measurements now.. not as bad as that but missing a side chain rail and the lower one is all broken..gots scratch cyl.. will need to do some measurements to see if I can get away with just honing..
Hello! i have a 1998 300 td and the i changed my thermostat and Radiator and coolant but car still over heats, that hose from the coolant in the reservoir is cool the hose where i put the new thermostat is cool, But the hose that comes from the engine back to the radiator (top hose) is burning up in temp. what could make it do that.
I have a 2012 c250 with a broke timing chain. Is this an interference engine? I'm sure I can fix it if it's just the chain I run a shop and we do a lot of builds but I can't find any information on this 1.8 turbo Benz engine. The chain is broke and I haven't taken the timing cover of yet but u can see the tensioner exploded. Long story short. Is the head ruined with bent valves? If so I'm just going to purchase a used engine and part the old one out.
More Mercedes Benz engine rebuild clips on the way sorry for the delay, shop's been busy.
Anyone know the cylinder head bolt torque specs and degrees? My manual says it should be the same as other 102 engine non costworth sohc 2.3? Help!!!
Can someone please tell me if 01mazda B2300 dohc 2.3l is a interference motor and how do u get timing chain cover off!!!!!! Plz HELP!!!
im about to buy i 190e 2.3 16v, but i have to fix the cylinder head and be fore i buy it i would like to know how much i have to pay to fix the cylinder head??
need some help
please could i get some of your insight on this Manner. Thank u !
holes in cams are on 20 degrees as far as i know...
Possible to connect with you via email? I have a 190e 16v and it was driving great!... until it wasn't and developed a horrendous noise. Just wanted to ask a couple q's.
mercedes 190 e cosworth ( evo )
im 17 and i really wish i knew what the **** you were doing
