Yes! just watched the whole race. Senna And Lauda are great. Interesting that people have said Lauda didn't like the rain. I met Senna in Adelaide in 85. He went out of his way to give me a sticker (decal) when i approached him in the Pitlane (i sneaked into the heavily guarded Pitlane when an F1-11 Jet did a Fly-over and everyone looked up!..i was 15 yrs old) Senna graciously walked about 10 metres out of his way, to get me a sticker after i'd approached him without a pen for an Autograph. I shook his hand and wished him well for the Raceday. This must have been on a Thurs or Friday before Sunday's race actually. (He was with Lotus at the time) Sidenote- i met Hazel Chapman too, in the Lotus Pit.
@@TheCarsfan4ever i mounted it in a frame under a iconic Senna photo image...but to my horror, my Sister threw it out when Dad passed away and during the ensuing house clear out. (i had it stored at Dads) ps- mark your name on anything you have stored at your parents' house!
I was there in the rain and saw this wonderful race and it was all Senna and Lauda to the very end totally great and one of the best races I have ever witnessed.
I try to imagine the shock that must have been to see lauda left behind the whole race. Who could imagine that happening then?? Today all of us know that only one person could have done that, and thank god there was a lot more to be seeing...#SennaSempre
so did you see the supposed Senna forcing Prost out of the way on the first corner? Did it happen that way ? Also didn't Lauda start from the back and have to work his way to the front?
Hell of a car. I owned one of these for 11 years and loved every minute of it. Sadly (now) I traded it in for an E36 M3 and in retrospect I wish I kept it. I love M3s too but MB had a real winner with this one and not many people know that. This is truly a special car and one I can see owning again someday.
Contrary to the notion that Mercedes recognised the significance of the Senna 190E, I've read stories that the head of Mercedes was actually quite annoyed when Senna won the race. The plan was to display the winning car in the Mercedes museum because the winner was expected to be an F1 World Champion, however Senna hadn't even won a race. When the head of Mercedes questioned the value of the car he was quickly pulled aside and told words to the effect "I'd hold onto that car if I was you".
As a Brazilian let me say this... Rock Paper Scissors is super very competitive in Brasil... Our nature is to be very obnoxious and competitive at something small like that... So that is just to give you all an idea of how serious Senna was taking a race of that nature. Specially with all the names there, and racing the very same car... It is the most ideal race for a professional, everyone using the same equipment. I bet he really wanted to win that more than he ever did want to win a race up to that point
I found your video by chance because I was looking for the complete race from 1984! I came across this short video by chance. I wasn't interested in racing when I was younger, I always found the races boring, until one day I heard the story of Senna. I am very surprised that Mercedes organized this race back in 1984, I was even more surprised that the 190E 2.3L had 185 hp! I always saw the old Mercedes as a grandpa's car, but the way Senna drove this 190E is simply unbelievable! Even from today's perspective! Greetings from Germany ;)
A wonderful piece to say the least and great homage to one the greatest men to ever get behind a steering wheel: Aryton Senna. Though that now storied 1984 race with Senna behind the wheel of a 190e cosworth has commanded attention from automotive journalists and car enthusiasts alike, it fell into much obscurity for years. It's nice to see a tv program shed light on what was an historic race foreshadowing the f1 success of Senna. Plus, the 190 cosworth is more interesting than an e30 m3.
I have had 4 2,3-16 in my opinion : Best car ever built , compact fast, sporty, handling, comfort, realiable, 4seater sunrroof aircondition not very expensive and above all, goodlooking what more to wish C Denmark i
Senna wasn't the only one TRYING to win that irrelavent race. But he was the only one TALENTED enough to win it in that group. He had to pass Prost and Lauda in order to win. I can guarantee you that neither of those two LET Senna pass them for the win. Yes the race was meaningless. But the best driver still won!! A word of advice......Don't EVER question Senna's greatness. You'll lose EVERY TIME!!!
I dont think you have any business telling anyone to "stop fawning" over a man who won in Monaco five times, was a maestro in wet weather, and was probably the greatest ever at qualifying laps. But yes, of course drivers like Prost, Piquet, and Mansell deserve their fair share of praise
Excellent Video! Ex 2.5 16 owner here - sadly missed. Have to say I was a bit surprised to read (and now hear) that you didn't know what the SLS fluid/system was! Engine aside - the SLS suspension is what 'makes' the 16V.
Seeing this brings back so many memories of quasi-road battles I had with my friend in the early 90's. He (my friend) in his 190E 2.3-16 and me in my E30 M3. Last few months I've been looking for a low mileage E30 M3 to buy and if necessary restore so that it looks like new.
..oh, and don't forget; i'm sure someone else has mentioned it..Senna hired as Merc 190 and drove it around Monaco for a few days before this race, to get used to this car.
190e. Fabulous cars. I have four.ablue limited edition ablack one also a silver one originally supplied to Lehmann brothers and a white one. All 2 litre models. Rog. Pacific sunset records.
Is there a difference between a gear ratios in Senna's 190 and a roadgoing 2.3-16? Because the speedo shows max speeds on each gear. Top speed on 4th gear as shown on 9:20 is 155kph (just). In any other picture of 2.3-16 interior I found the speedo-indicated top speed in 4th is over 200kph. So maybe this car was far more from stock than just seats and rollcage?
I always wished Senna was expelled from F1. This corroborates my theory of stock car racing being more excitong than F1. this should of been a annual one off race for everyone in the same car each year. its fair, its competitive and exciting. once Senna drove this, no one else should have. rip Senna.
I purchased a 2.3 16 when I was 20 for 500 dollars I didn’t know what it was other than it was a stick shift Mercedes with rear bucket seats! It ran but was an electrical nightmare and in 2001 I didn’t have the money to take care of it I was offered 2500 bucks for it and I sold it thinking I was getting over on them! But they got over on me!! And now I can’t find another unless I sell my organs!!! I can say it was an awesome vehicle and one of the best driving cars I’ve ever driven!! Its history is unreal, and the car that made the m3 a necessity for bmw!!
The biggest regret of my life...I had a black one back in 1995 for 2 years and loved it dearly.I traded it in for a brand new Saab 93 aero.Mistake. Great memories though and would love to try and buy another.
I really do wish people would stop fawning over Ayrton Senna, yes he was a fantastic driver, but he was one of a number of fantastic racing drivers from that era, let's not forget that another driver died that weekend, he also was fantastic as touring car fans from the eighties can a test, and that was Roland ratzenberger
Well im pretty sure that Senna was the one that took hardest the death of Ratzenberger. But lets not compare none of that era to Senna, i bet anytime, any amount of money that if Senna lived for more like, 5,6 years he would be till today the most F1 world champion winner.
To my eyes the old 190e 2.3 16 looks far better than the new cla or practically the whole new mercedes lineup. I really wish Mercedes would bring back that angular Bauhaus minimalism.
2.3 even tho it showed less power on paper than the 2.5, was a slightly quicker car through the gears. Both very special cars tho ... I was lucky to own both during late 80's early 90's
16 valve 4cyl engines tuned by cosworth, also some changes in the suspension and interior (bucket seats front and rear...), some had self levelling suspension front and rear, then also a bodykit with aero and some other stuff
Evo & anyone who watches this video: I've searched numerous threads, watched countless videos and no where, I LITERALLY MEAN "NO WHERE" does anyone give the time that Prost, Lauda or Senna set .. Could someone please (if possible) provide the time they set. T.I.A

take the best 20 drivers in the world, give them a few beers, put them in a 200hp saloon that almost anyone could afford and don't mention anything about safety! sounds like the recipe for motoring pleasure! this could be done 25 years ago, why can't it be done today?

@Mega Megatron
Diddo, sounds like Senna was fully passionate about the race community. What a great story.
You are blessed
Senna was a great guy. Thx for sharing!
Have you used the decal or do you still have it?

Dad had a 190E....miss that car. :((
There is the full video of the race on youtube!!
how can anyone dislike this video !
Haters gonna hate.
They don't like cars.
prost & schumacher fans!
I'm glad that despite not listening to the story at all, you still found something worthwhile to point out.
Shit still brings a tear to my eyes, Imagine Schumie and Senna going head to head in the 90's.
Where did you find all of those pictures? What is this book?
great vid guys. I own a 190 2.3-16 which I have also ran round the nordschliefe, and am a big fan of the senna legend.
Cheers
Daniel Caine i currently own a volvo 240 but i will save to afford a 2.5 16

makes me want to buy one of those now
if they had recorded this race, it would have been one of the greatest videos ever. world champions from the 60's- 90 all racing against eachother
They did...
They did i will send you a link
SENNA=RESPECT
Ive recently purchaed a 2.516v in smoke silver.
Been dry stored for 23 years..
Soo tempted to make it into a evo2 spec.
..oh, and don't forget; i'm sure someone else has mentioned it..Senna hired as Merc 190 and drove it around Monaco for a few days before this race, to get used to this car.

Great peace Evo. Thanks very much
The leather on the seats still looks perfect.
Indeed. The gearing was altered to top out at 120mph.
Great feature guys, really well put together.

Reminds me of my dad's 190e sportline edition with the black and red leather interior.

Who owns the 190E now???? heard it was auctioned recently but can't remember who bought it???

2 questions:
Is that Olly Murs older brother on the left?
How big are Mike Duff's conkers that he has to sit with this legs that far apart?
race is now only nearly in full
I think the race can be watched on a dvd that you can buy on shop.motorsport-dvd.de but I'm not sure if its the whole race.... dvd goes 70min
Senna = Best Race car driver of all time.
I think there still the best looking Mercedes @Resnorth. Personally I prefer them to the BMW
You mean to say that Mike is only 37 in this film- My goodness, time has not been kind to him!
AYRTON SENNA NO. 1
Not really, watch the '84 Monaco Grand Prix. Car = Toleman TG184
Full length video of this race is now available on Vimeo: vimeo.com/151235709
Thank you so very much!
FUCK YEA!
what is the difference from the usual 190e
Aleksandr Halas i think this one has been tuned by coswort
16 valve 4cyl engines tuned by cosworth, also some changes in the suspension and interior (bucket seats front and rear...), some had self levelling suspension front and rear, then also a bodykit with aero and some other stuff
Erm, the last Race of Champions had Vettel, Grosjean, Schumacher and Coulthard competing.
Red Mercedes!
Alain Prost was on pole position. He was forced out by the typical aggressive style of senna driving during the race.
does anyone have sennas lap time in this car at the nurburgring?
2:13:54 was his fastest lap
Should check Prost lap time because he was the pole setter!
Great History Magazine Evo !
Senna wearing Casio G-Shock square!
LOL at 11:10
"...a German mechanic told me in no uncertain terms, making it clear I was an idiot..."

I think this guy Mark is the most English guy in existence. Great story. But he needs to look at this body language.
It's called being alpha male, marking his territory and taking as much space as he can. It is working, he is the man!
those mercedeses were the best looking cars on the planet (after BMW). as well as future german style of 90s
edit this and remove the commentary and the nobodies presenting it, just show us the engine and the specs
The light was going down...never heard that one before. Oh wait, it's a trademark of the british journalist.
