You said everything I'd want to say in your MMC vid, all I can do is agree and say I want to be wowed again, like they did with their overlord. Here's hoping....... Great watch as always, thanks man
He does seem to be based on his early IDW model, the one from Spotlight: Drift and the flashbacks in MTMtE... but ultimately it fails to capture that regardless. The proportions -- tiny cockpit, miniscule claws, and bulky shins -- throw him way off, and compromise with the MTMtE arm-fans is especially jarring. I'm a little surprised by the build quality, but not so much considering MMC's track record.
@MythsAndHeroes Hey I have a question.I found a mastermind creations whirl But I found one with Red eye instead of a yellow eye i'm curious if That's the real one or not plus I like the red eye better than the yellow
Great video! As much as I got their Cyclonus (literally and figuratively), I'm surprised that they chose such an iconic character to do in such a way. I think that Generations Whirl captures the essence of the character much better.
One of the reasons I picked this up, is because it had a much closer look to what I want than the Hasbro voyager. I think its a good all around product, and a shame it wasn't full IDW. I'm not dissatisfied at all, it's a lot of fun to handle. I don't think their choice to give this to us instead was bad, but it is definitely puzzling when we look at the IDW track record they have.
I'm pretty sure this is based on the Stormbringer artwork by Don Figueroa. Check out the issue 3 cover (back). Great work as always master Skullface, cheers from the UK.
It may not look like Milne's Whirl, but it definitely carries a lot of Whirl's personality from that comic. The head and finger articulation allow for a lot of poses that really send the character. I would have preferred a Milne-styled Whirl, but I do like this guy better than Generations Whirl, who is just a little too boxy and G1 to evoke MTMTE Whirl that much.
Looking through the comments to see all the people getting angry about how it's supposed to be based on an earlier iteration of Whirl and don't find that at all. You don't lie, Mr. Skullface, your comments page is chock-full of stand-up viewers. Good review, by the way.
"I want my hands back" I cry a little when I think about how tragic this character is... and when I think about how poor a representation this figure is.
I rather enjoy how expressive this mold is, to the point I feel it overcomes the lack of Milne-ness. I've found he looks more Whirl-ey if you flip the nosecone up straight and flip out the gun in robot mode. Not sure who I want on my LL shelf, this or Takara Whirl though.
Well, as someone who likes the character, i think the head is good but i wish you could have an extra swappable head with the squint, and i dont know if i prefer the comic hands or this figures hands, but i do like the way it looks so, I’ll probably get this.
It's like he doesn't know what he wants to be... Revoltech, a stingray, Gundam, WW2 glider, Avatar bird thingy, Halo dropship, can opener, robosmurf, Iron Man 2 movie reject, etc.
Wow! I'd thought this one would be a sure thing. But the points you brought up, I hadn't thought of that... Still, I like this version more then the Hasbro one. Once again thanks for an awesome video buddy!
Very much agree with your points on this guy, I bought him but basically because I don't know if we'll ever get another IDWesc Whirl. Which is such a shame. IDW is getting some love but not nearly enough. Maketoys has basically thrown in the towel on their Manga Mech series, right when I was hoping they'd do a good Rewind and finally give us a Rung. GT is killin the IDW designs, but at an MP scale. SXS may be our last hope for competition against MMC to make more MTMTE styles.
I agree it doesn't really look like Whirl, but honestly I do like the look of it on its own. The thing that did surprise me though is it doesn't really look like a "masterpiece" construction-wise, and that leaves me wondering if some companies are backing away from the whole "masterpiece stand in" position in favor of something more along the lines of voyager-tier construction. Like looking at this the construction does remind me of Generations Voyager Whirl.
I pulled the trigger on whirl cause i can rationalise it as a Stormbringer era iteration of him kinda sorta but i agree that MMC's multi-use molds approach isnt the best way forward. Was disappointed with the way their cyclonus ended up looking
Well, you gave it a "whirl" and it didn't sweep you off your feet. It doesn't sweep me off my feet either. It isn't bad, but I don't care for it for the same reasons you mentioned. It isn't what I see as Whirl. And that's kind of a shame since it could have been pretty cool. Another fair and balanced review. Well done Mr. Skullface.
I think if they're gonna try to use 2 molds. Aside from the slight mods. Make one bigger than the other. This guy seems a little small. Keep the other one that size. But this one a quarter bigger. The Roadbuster bigger than the titanika or what ever her name is. I bought her and I like it. But I'm looking forward to someone else making RB bigger. Maybe FansHobby may make one. I'm looking forward to that one.
He always seemed more inspired by the Stormbringer story, Spotlight Drift, and Last Stand flashbacks to me. The optional "normal" leg position and chest that can angle up and flip out his gun make him look even more like Whirl from those stories. As such, this figure would never go on my Lost Light shelf, but he fits in perfectly with my original Wreckers line up shelf. My main complaints are that I dislike those weird struts on the top back of his alt mode (don't think I've ever seen an air vehicle like that) and that I wish MMC would stop giving us accessories that aren't needed. Whirl uses a sword in like, ten panels, if that. I'd rather have a different gun, or maybe some panel line paint.
that World Class Wrecking Skit almost flatline me LMAO!!!! I am glad that this figure has good shoulder articulation. MMC have been slacking in that area lately. I like the look of this figure but do agree that their philosophy of how to go about figures and trying to make different characters with the same mold is flawed like you said in your previous video.
I like this one, the only thing that bugs me the knee was folding 'the other way' around. Speaking of that, I had an accident where my thumb folded the other way around at the base(second joint) and seeing your thumb folded like that as you pushing the parts is scaring me. Anyway back to that toy, thanks for the review, I might consider buying it.
I mean if the head oddly enough looked more like the Hasbro version, I would have picked him up. Cause I get that because of whirls lankyness he'd be a very difficult figure to pull off. But I'll wait for another company to take a shot
This, and your discussion video, sum up how I feel about MMC. I would go a little further as, comparing this to their own ocular max line, there seems to be a very different value-for-money ratio going on. Their MP line is priced comparably, as much as one could reasonably expect, to other unofficial and official MPs. For them to put out simplified, toy level engineering at the same price point feels like they're attempting to exploit me. I like CHUG so I should want reformatted. I don't because they are not doing well enough on price. Especially when compared to other 3Ps.
Great review Skull Brother!!! He's ok but definitely suffers because he was the after thought to obsidian. BTW you never assume because it makes an ASS OF U AND ME LOL...
Maybe if MMC focused more of their resources on the quality of their figures as opposed to the quality of their packaging they may start impressing people again.
Nice review as usual, I saw your MMC discusion and i agree with you in a lot of way. I looove MMC Im a humble collector (meaning i dont own a huge ton of figure only the ones i think diserve to be in my shelft (I have a tight budget for this) and most of my transformers figure are from them,. This fellow and cyclonus where the ones i was expecting the most, and they are both such a let down :(, you are right they should have been the main mold and addapst the other repaits to them, MMC drop the ball on those two. I also agree with you with part that we are willing to pay more for better figures, but I think MMC should try to look for a balance where they keep doing great figures for a reasonable price, specially for collector like myseflt that are not from the US I usually have to Add between 20 to 30$ more to the price just for shipping and freight, if the price go to high they will lose all there buyers from other regions of the world, or at least that what i think,. We all love MMC but we dont want them to become a mix between hasbro (repaint lords) and playarts kai (there prices are ridiculous now).
"It doesn't really look like Whirl" Agreed! It looks like an awkward robot lying flat on its belly trying to look like it does have a real all mode :/ MMC keeps disappointing me with their latest releases... Otherwise, great honest review as usual, Bobby :)
The decisions are bizarre. It doesn't look a ton like MTMTE Whirl, but with the right paint and the right hands, it would be close enough. It's a fun toy but I don't know why in the world MMC made the decision to make this guy and Boreas not accurate at least a little to MTMTE.
Maybe it's because I'm not overly familiar with Whirl, but he looks good to me. That said, I totally agree with the fact that MMC needs to stop recycling figures and/or parts of other figures. Turben's shoulders are slight retools of their Lockdown mold.
What if I want to rock down to electric avenue instead? LOL Yes, Whirl should have been the priority! That skit... WTH!? lol I guess it could have been worse, you could have been singing "Raining Men!" LOL
This toy looks like he is worth $30.00, and definitely not the asking price. What's going on? This guy doesn't look or feel like whirl. I would love to see both a good idw whirl, and a good mp g1 whirl. Great video man.
I honestly think that the biggest issue, even beyond aesthetics, is just how cheap he feels. This figure has no quality difference than that of Combiner Wars Springer or Sandstorm, and he's about three times the cost. That's what has struck me most about the last few releases from MMC_not that they completely blew the figures themselves, because while this may not be dead on, it's not awful, but the quality and Masterpiece feel just hasn't been there, which is a shame-they are shortchanging themselves, since we clearly already know what they are capable of when their heads are in the game. Also-I'm pretty sure the sword was borrowed from Jaegertron. Out of curiosity, does anyone know what a company like MMC needs to move unit wise for a particular release to be considered a success? I'm wondering how close they dance on that line, and if that's why we've been getting more re-tooled versions of the same basic figure and less high quality feeling figures; if they are basically refilling their coffers with some items they know will sell despite any obvious issues purely because of the characters they are meant to represent. It would be a smart way to do business, but it's kind of a stab in the back of your fans and the people that have been supporting you.
You're probably right-the plastic feels a bit better, but their overall weight and general quality is much closer than it should be at that price point. MMC has been one of my so called "Big Three" 3rd party companies that I've been really happy with-Fans Toys and MakeToys being the other two, with DX9 and KFC coming in right behind them. I'm not jumping ship just yet, but if they keep putting out seemingly lazy, uninspired efforts, they may drop a few notches as far as dollar priority.
Eh, they should have made a new mold for whirl instead of making a slight retool, the mold is good but it still screams obsidian( I forget his 3rd party name) also on the side note did you ever get the rid menasor set, I remember you talking about it in a video a while back, if you have them can you review them, I just want to see you destroy them lol.
Bobby Skullface L I warn you, you will need to see a psychiatrist after reviewing them, I know the rid line is for kids but if I was a kid I would want to play with something else.
Bobby, good overall, thank you, just the final thoughts could have used a bit more.... Before giving your final thoughts on a figure, pls pls pleaaaaase, take 5 minutes off to take a general brake, then give your Emotional Subjective views but follow them by your very Objective opinions (you normally do this part, but not here...). That would greatly help give more value to the video for everyone and being a fair review, which you are renown for, as this figure could really be enjoyed by many fans if they take it as a new take on Whirl and for the 3rd party toy itself. This does not come across, because all we feel at the end, is the disappointment in general that it doesnt look like IDW Whirl, which can easily be determined by looking at pictures, and the fans that want IDW wouldnt buy this anyways for 85$ price tag (vs the generations at 20-30$). For someone that digs the looks though, well, i believe like many of your previous reviews, it should have been mentioned a better than just "soft" recommend for that crowd, and elaborating on that, wouldnt you agree? And I get the wanting to be wowed by a figure and very much agree with it, I myself havent been wowed from their 85$ range reformatted figures since MMC Spartan / Commotus, and it is was a concern for me too actually going in.
Is it just me, or does any transforming figure pass as a The Transformers figure these days? I do get that "artistic freedom" and all that, but sometimes some of these 3rd party figures just look like an attempt of "being one of the crew", if you catch my drift here. To me, there is a difference between a transforming figure and a transformers figure. I know that there is all these alternate universes and all that stuff that I've appearantly missed out on, but jeeeeeez! Man, I'll stick to the G1 official masterpiece figures, as well as that damn Bayformers MPM mess that I've gotten myself into. The official MP's are pride in my collection, but the MPM figures are simply just a shame that I'll have to live with LOL! Don't worry though, because I will seek help if that MPM stuff gets totally out of line! I have the looney house on standby and on speed dial if it goes that far LOL!
I have no attachment to the character at all. But even I know just from pictures, that aint right. Also, just from a figure prospective, the back of the alt mode would scare the hell out of me. There are a lot of really small pieces that I am sure I could break without even trying. I am glad I don't care anything about the figure or I may be tempted to buy it. As it is, I will most definitely pass.
From feedback in TFW forum, I believe this is a well made toy. But I have no reason to buy this, cause I see generation one look more whirl to me than this one.. For I feel it look like fan want an IDW inspired Whirl but they don't want to invest a new mold so they include a sword for convince IDW fan to but it.... which I feel not enough for me....They are going to be another Hasbro at this point....
Well I loved it. I'm not fond of the spindly, flimsy Milne Chicken-walker design and I think when somebody does try to make a slavish toy of that particular look they are going to wish they hadn't - it'll make Sonicron look solid. Just because TF Toy design has achieved some near miracles in recent years doesn't mean EVERY IDW design is possible or even desirable. Whirl may just be one of those like many Film designs that just work in 2D but are a nightmare in real life. And having been disappointed by many of the QC fuckups in the Occular Max line up I'm please personally that MMC still have an A Game that can produce solid figures like this that do what they are supposed to - justify being 2.5X the price of the Hastak toy. He's My Wrecker, even if He isn't yours.
He doesn't look like MTMTE Whirl, sure. But go back and check the comics, you'll see he pretty much nails the Chaos Theory iteration by way of a few other influences.. Regardless, it's still clearly an IDW inspired Whirl.
Cool looking figure but definitely not for me. Word of advice, don't quit your day job. I don't think the world is quite ready to have Bobby Skullface, male sex symbol, take it by storm. All kidding aside, great review and keep em' coming.
*in Robert D derpa derpa voice*...you didn't show the gerwalk mode, it has one!!! Cause Macross is still a thing? Generations Whirl is still fine and was only 20 bucks at the time. Damn son you gots some hairy ass legs.
That hair on Bobbys legs are nothing compared to what I have on my back! Shit, I can't even take my t-shirt off in the summer, because I might be mistaken for a rouge bear and get put down by accident LOL! Bobbys legs looks like a smooth baby butt compared to my back, hahaha!
Generations whirl will stay on my shelf a bit longer.
i hear you
You said everything I'd want to say in your MMC vid, all I can do is agree and say I want to be wowed again, like they did with their overlord. Here's hoping....... Great watch as always, thanks man
thanks for watching
He does seem to be based on his early IDW model, the one from Spotlight: Drift and the flashbacks in MTMtE... but ultimately it fails to capture that regardless. The proportions -- tiny cockpit, miniscule claws, and bulky shins -- throw him way off, and compromise with the MTMtE arm-fans is especially jarring. I'm a little surprised by the build quality, but not so much considering MMC's track record.
........
finally gets to the skit.
skit completes.
closes computer.
walks away.
.......
lol
@MythsAndHeroes Hey I have a question.I found a mastermind creations whirl But I found one with Red eye instead of a yellow eye i'm curious if That's the real one or not plus I like the red eye better than the yellow
Great video! As much as I got their Cyclonus (literally and figuratively), I'm surprised that they chose such an iconic character to do in such a way. I think that Generations Whirl captures the essence of the character much better.
i think both miss the mark by a long shot persoanlly
One of the reasons I picked this up, is because it had a much closer look to what I want than the Hasbro voyager.
I think its a good all around product, and a shame it wasn't full IDW. I'm not dissatisfied at all, it's a lot of fun to handle. I don't think their choice to give this to us instead was bad, but it is definitely puzzling when we look at the IDW track record they have.
agreed
I'm pretty sure this is based on the Stormbringer artwork by Don Figueroa. Check out the issue 3 cover (back).
Great work as always master Skullface, cheers from the UK.
i can see that, but it still remains an odd choice
It may not look like Milne's Whirl, but it definitely carries a lot of Whirl's personality from that comic. The head and finger articulation allow for a lot of poses that really send the character. I would have preferred a Milne-styled Whirl, but I do like this guy better than Generations Whirl, who is just a little too boxy and G1 to evoke MTMTE Whirl that much.
fair point

Great review happy SwivelWeek Skullface.
lol
"I want my hands back"
I cry a little when I think about how tragic this character is...
and when I think about how poor a representation this figure is.
yep
I rather enjoy how expressive this mold is, to the point I feel it overcomes the lack of Milne-ness. I've found he looks more Whirl-ey if you flip the nosecone up straight and flip out the gun in robot mode. Not sure who I want on my LL shelf, this or Takara Whirl though.
thats fair
Well, as someone who likes the character, i think the head is good but i wish you could have an extra swappable head with the squint, and i dont know if i prefer the comic hands or this figures hands, but i do like the way it looks so, I’ll probably get this.
It's like he doesn't know what he wants to be... Revoltech, a stingray, Gundam, WW2 glider, Avatar bird thingy, Halo dropship, can opener, robosmurf, Iron Man 2 movie reject, etc.
agreed
Wow! I'd thought this one would be a sure thing. But the points you brought up, I hadn't thought of that...
Still, I like this version more then the Hasbro one.
Once again thanks for an awesome video buddy!
if you dig the look, i strongly recommend it
Bobby Skullface L Sounds *AWESOME* buddy! Thanks.
SXS may be our last hope for competition against MMC to make more MTMTE styles.
i agree it will probably be our only option
I agree it doesn't really look like Whirl, but honestly I do like the look of it on its own. i agree, i dig the look as well, its just not the look, im looking for
I really like the anime mech look they went with.
then you should buy it because its built well
I pulled the trigger on whirl cause i can rationalise it as a Stormbringer era iteration of him kinda sorta but i agree that MMC's multi-use molds approach isnt the best way forward. Was disappointed with the way their cyclonus ended up looking
i hear you, nothing wrong with that
Well, you gave it a "whirl" and it didn't sweep you off your feet. It doesn't sweep me off my feet either. It isn't bad, but I don't care for it for the same reasons you mentioned. god, i LOVE PUNSSSSS
I'm looking forward to that one.
fanshobby has one coming
13:22 You're gonna' need Leonardo DiCaprio to draw you like one of his French girls if you're gonna' do that pose on your couch.
im up for that

Anyway back to that toy, thanks for the review, I might consider buying it.
hahah yea, double jointed status
I mean if the head oddly enough looked more like the Hasbro version, I would have picked him up. Cause I get that because of whirls lankyness he'd be a very difficult figure to pull off. But I'll wait for another company to take a shot
yea but the lankyness has to be achieved! :)
I believe it goes "Assumptions are the mother of all fuck ups". FYI.
hahaha fair enough
I think the sword is a repaint of generations drift weapon
not the same but certainly in the ball park
Soooooo.......when's the Titanic drawing skit?
lol
Not gonna lie, kinda am digging this figure, looks pretty good as well.
then you should definitely get it because its solid

This does not come across, because all we feel at the end, is the disappointment in general that it doesnt look like IDW Whirl, which can easily be determined by looking at pictures, and the fans that want IDW wouldnt buy this anyways for 85$ price tag (vs the generations at 20-30$). For someone that digs the looks though, well, i believe like many of your previous reviews, it should have been mentioned a better than just "soft" recommend for that crowd, and elaborating on that, wouldnt you agree? And I get the wanting to be wowed by a figure and very much agree with it, I myself havent been wowed from their 85$ range reformatted figures since MMC Spartan / Commotus, and it is was a concern for me too actually going in.
i hear you i think i said, if you like the way it looks its a stronger recommend, only so many hours in a day my friend
DAT VOCAL RANGE DOE
hahahahaha
I have the looney house on standby and on speed dial if it goes that far LOL!
hahahahahah
I have no attachment to the character at all. But even I know just from pictures, that aint right. Also, just from a figure prospective, the back of the alt mode would scare the hell out of me. There are a lot of really small pieces that I am sure I could break without even trying. I am glad I don't care anything about the figure or I may be tempted to buy it. As it is, I will most definitely pass.
they are small but i must say they are surprisingly durable
From feedback in TFW forum, I believe this is a well made toy.
But I have no reason to buy this, cause I see generation one look more whirl to me than this one..
For I feel it look like fan want an IDW inspired Whirl but they don't want to invest a new mold so they include a sword for convince IDW fan to but it.... which I feel not enough for me....They are going to be another Hasbro at this point....
i hear you
Well I loved it. He's My Wrecker, even if He isn't yours.
if you like it, you win
He doesn't look like MTMTE Whirl, sure. But go back and check the comics, you'll see he pretty much nails the Chaos Theory iteration by way of a few other influences.. Regardless, it's still clearly an IDW inspired Whirl.
right
Transformation reminds me of the kfc sharks
i can see a little of that
Cool looking figure but definitely not for me. Word of advice, don't quit your day job. I don't think the world is quite ready to have Bobby Skullface, male sex symbol, take it by storm. All kidding aside, great review and keep em' coming.
hahahah many thanks
Been dying for a MTMTE Whirl for a long time.... this ain't it.
i hear you
*in Robert D derpa derpa voice*...you didn't show the gerwalk mode, it has one!!!
Bobbys legs looks like a smooth baby butt compared to my back, hahaha!
hahahahaha
Great review. I just feel MMC is not kicking out anything special these days. Feels like the Generations line store bought. PASS!
i feel you
👍💀
!!!!!
I like my generation Whirl better LOL.
nothing wrong with liking what you like
Please please please, don't do that again!
no promises
Embarrassing figure.
