What happened is honestly just them following what the more vocal people in the fandom cry for. Endless G1 and MP forever, they cry, so that's what the majority of 3P does. There's a reason Fanshobby's Unicron Trilogy and Planet X's High Moon figures are so hyped and beloved by their respective demographics; there's no one else to turn to for those eras of Transformers.

Don’t forget APC Toys with figures based on Prime, Mastermind Creations with figures based on IDW, and various other companies and figures based on the movies.
But yeah outside of that I’d hardly consider anything else as “original” in the sense of inspirations, except for rare instances like Iron Factory or earlier Mech Fans Toys figures where they sometimes make new styles for the existing characters. They’re mostly if not all still characters largely based on G1 though… I don’t blame third party companies for sticking to actual source material either since it’s what people are more familiar with and gives them more opportunities for crazy engineering. I don’t like the design of Galvatron from Age of Extinction, (Well, I guess I kinda do, just definitely not as a Galvatron design anyways) but I can’t deny that the Unique Toys Nero figure is *fantastic.*

I think what happened is that in the early days 3P was about filling gaps in CHUG. Fansproject with Magus armor and Rodimus armor and Headmasters. TFC with their combiners. Toyworld with throttlebots and a more classically styled Megatron. Perfect Effect with Reflector and Frenzy/Rumble
And then Hasbro started filling the gaps themselves. They started doing Magnuses and less out there Megatrons, whole lines were dedicated to Combiners and Headmasters. They were retail level engineering, but that made them a hell of a lot cheaper. Upgrading those figures was STILL cheaper than buying most 3P offerings.
So the 3P companies looked around for a current line in need of gap filling. Characters who haven’t been done yet.
MP it is! And MP it stays, because those figures take longer for Takara to produce and leave 3P plenty of time to pump out a million versions. MP Trailbreaker and Skyfire just got announced. I’m sure nearly everyone who wants them has a 3P alternative. Masterpiece Shockwave was a release SURROUNDED by 3P alternatives it was endlessly compared to, as was MP-52. The official and Moon studios versions of MP Raiden are having a fight over collectors’ wallets right now.
3P to me has always been about trying to guess what figures collectors need to fill the gaps in their collections right now. In the beginning it was CHUG, and now it’s MP. Movie MP and Beast Wars MP and Japanese G1 MP (mostly FansHobby’s Masterforce stuff) have gotten attention from 3P to, but those figures take time to produce, as do the recent Unicron trilogy MP releases we’re getting.
3P has always chased the trends. That’s where their money is, in their minds.
As for the more unique designs? We got Hearts of Steel and IDW… when they were immediately relevant. When those comics ended, the attention 3P gave them died down. Not completely in the case of IDW, but it definitely shows how 3P Hearts of Steel went the way of the Dodo.
In a weird way, the Legends scale scene of all places is the most exciting. Other than MMC and Kang Toys, Iron Factory is the most willing to experiment with their aesthetics, and they make some great stuff. New age sticks primarily to G1, but their engineering is so inventive that it isn’t a bother. Transform Element has their tiny Beast Wars beauts. Small scale collectors are getting tons of variety, because small scale never had set rules. Legends and Core have gone from Cybertron to Legacy, and that scale will always be around for people who want it.
I don’t know where I was going with this anymore

  • @alexholker1309

I think it's understandable because unlike Games Workshop, Hasbro doesn't have "evergreen" products. It was frustrating seeing GW release their seventh plastic Space Marine Dreadnought when the other six were still in print, but with Hasbro you only have access to what's being released right now and shelfwarmers from the previous toyline. The first party toys also not having a standardised scale and quality also means there's more gaps to fill between Legends, CHUG and Masterpiece, or for better versions of gappy or unposable first party toys.

The WFC trilogy that’s what happened, a real game changer for transformers in general

  • @lexibyday9504
    @lexibyday9504 2 года назад

If I did a third party line I'd take the subteams of transromers, the dinobots, the original predacons, the constructicons etc... and expand them turning them into full factions of their own with leaders, base formers, weapon formers etc...
And, if I did make any existing characters, I'd be sure to include as much of that character as possible. The original dinobots as tripple changers with cybertronian vehicle modes, dino modes, robot modes, and also their volcanicus combination with guns and swords that combine into combine mode weapons; or an Orion Pax with his original alt mode that also upgrades into optimus prime like the POTP figure but then can upgrade again by combining with one of a set of trailers he comes with to use one of Prime's many upgraded modes like Star Convoy, and he can combine with certain other figures for even more power up modes.
In short my priority would be recreating the important play value and adding to it with some of my fan characters rather than just recreating the look.
But I realise transformers aren't toys, they're collectors pieces and the important thing for collectors who aren't even going to take it out of the box isn't how fun it is to play with or how many new characters they can get, it's making sure they have the full collection of the oficial characters looking exactly as they are meant to.

I was never a fan of the overly stylized takes because they don't fit in with anything else, but I do really miss when they'd experiment with new takes on existing characters every now and again. What I'd give for a reimagining of the Stunticons with Prime Breakdown and Knockout, and then another two new characters to beef the other limbs up for example. Or just third party companies doing what Legacy is trying to do but better. Imagine a faithful G1 styled Bayformers Barricade, Blackout Bonecrusher, Ironhide, Bumblebee, Optimus, ect? A G1 styled ROTF Megatron? A G1 styled AOE Hound, Drift and Crosshairs? I miss when third party companies would do things other than just painfully cartoon accurate masterpiece figures.

Okay, lovely review and figure, but I have to say something here:
I have no idea why, but people keep referring to anything with a fixed wing as "jets". A jet is a type of engine, but not the aircraft itself. Most jets are on aircraft, but not all aircraft, not all planes especially, are jets. In this case, it's a propellor-driven airplane. Please, just call a plane a plane and a helicopter a helicopter instead of just saying "jet" all the time? (No idea why this gets to me so much, but it just grinds my gears every time I hear a reviewer say "jet" for every fixed-wing aircraft...)
Regardless, great review on a rather niche figure! I'll admit, I miss the days too when 3P companies came up with original designs or ideas. ToyWorld has been doing WWI/WWII stuff based on TLK, but nobody's heard from them for a while, so that may be gone and done for all we know. Meanwhile, no other third party seems to be touching anything 'conceptual' or different than what you've said recently, and it's a darn shame.
