I miss playing this game so much. I was in a Thursday night league with a bunch of random people on Xbox live. We would practice all week and tweak our setups. Then Thursday night we would run a 50% distance race. To go back and race one more race with them guys with be awesome
The music sounds like it was made by Limp Bizkit, Korn, Static X, Mudvayne, Deftones, Slipknot, etc. since it has that Nu-Metal, Post-Grunge type of genre to it.
The black Penskes originate from their first foray into the IRL in 2001. Because of the Tobacco MSA, the team couldn't race in two series with a tobacco sponsorship. So for their first IRL race in Phoenix in 2001, the cars that Helio and Gil drove had that black Penske livery, before reverting to the Marlboro chevrons sans logos for the Indy 500. Guess Codemasters reckoned that you couldn't put the chevrons on the cars because they are so closely tied with Marlboro, and rather than make the cars straight white (like what some earlier CART games did), they chose to use the black livery from 2001.
This game basically was: - Labelled as "Indycar Series 2005" - Released in 2004 - Features the 2003 Indy Racing League Calendar and Driver Roster I recently bought a copy of the first Indycar Series by Codemasters released in 2003 and it seems no different from this game. Apart from this game featuring the 2003 IRL Calendar and the first Indycar Series featuring the 2002 IRL Calendar. The Generic Menu Music is the same and Menu Options are the same. It's still an enjoyable game and I hope the upcoming Indycar Racing game in 2023 will be full of promising gameplay.
A couple of things. The first IndyCar Series game covered 2002, this one covers 2003. So the cars are different. And its teeeeeechnically not the last dedicated IndyCar game as Indy 500 Evolution came out in 2009.
First code masters indy car game had the 2002 drivers and teams. The tuturial mode had Eddie cheever narrating. 2005 version had Dan Wheldon Narrating the tutorial mode. I completely forgot that 2005 had 2 year old lineups. I spent more time playing the first edition.
Oh man I loved this game as a kid, I had it on xbox. I know I'm late but I just watched the 2003 season not too long ago. A couple historical notes, the game represents the 2003 season, Ganassi did participate in IRL in 2002 with Jeff Ward in the 9 car, they did win at Texas I believe, however Scott Dixon did drive for Ganassi in 2002 in CART, and 2003 was them fully switching to IRL. Kenny Brack's accident was in fact in 2003. Penske raced that livery in 2001 at Phoenix in a preparation race before Indy. Gil De Ferran did finish 2nd in points, he ended up finishing well at the last race and jumped Hornish and Kanaan who came in with more points however they they fell out with mechanical issues for Hornish and accident damage for Kanaan I believe. De Ferran also won the Indy 500 in 2003 oddly enough in a Panoz G-Force while he ran most other races in the Dallara, Helio ran every race in the Dallara, and yes this was his final year. Dan Wheldon moved to Ganassi in 06 so its kinda doubly lucky that their 2005 titled game had the 500 winner, and title winner from that season in the car he used right before he moved. Bryan Herta is running the 27's livery because he partially drove the 27 car after Dario had hurt his back in a motorcycle accident, he came back for one race and then ended up sitting out the rest of the season with surgery. Herta would get the XM radio, this was before Sirius and XM merged, 7 car in 2004 full time. Also Wheldon initially joined as a replacement for Dario and eventially took over Michael Andretti's ride the 7 car becoming the 26 as depicted on the box. Also re tracks, Miami is the flat version, Indy raced the flat version in the spring, they reconfigured it, and NASCAR raced the high banked version in the fall. Motegi switched from CART to IRL with its owners Honda and was the one calendar addition for 2003. To your note about disappointment in there being no road courses, the 3 road courses you'd be expecting for 2005 are St. Petersburg, Sonoma, and Watkins Glen, a couple changes with ovals, Gateway left the calendar after 2003, Milwaukee joined in 2004 to replace it. In 2005, they added the 3 road course races and removed 2, Nazareth, and the 2nd race at Texas.
The spotter sounds like Sylvestor Stallone, which wouldnt be much of a surprise considering he was in the DRIVEN movie a few years before this game was made.
I played the first one of these games for years and years on my PS2. One of the best racing sim games ever. I loved how it was hard to drive through the field, it felt like an actual race.
It’s nice to hear Wheldon’s voice again, but also funny to get a reminder how much sponsorship there was from Bombardier in this era of indycar. I guess maybe they were hoping to sell Lear jets (which they had acquired recently) or maybe snowmobiles, but the product I associate most with that brand, far and away, is trains, including the one I’m riding as I watch this. Do we think anyone ever bought a train because Bombardier sponsored the Indycar rookie of the year award?
Back in 05/06 I picked this game up as a kid thinking it's like F1. I was between Kingkong and this and I choose IndyCar. Played it once and than forgot about it. My dad played it a lot instead and I tried it againas a teen 10 years ago and I liked it. The videos I made are still up on that old channel here.
2003 was DeFerrans last season he won the Indianapolis 500 that year and also won the Texas race at the end of the season. Kenny Brack had his brutal accident at Texas in 2003. I never got to play 2005 but loved the original. I managed to win the tital despite failing to qualify for the Indianapolis 500
This game was and still is absolutely fascinating to me. It has a full suite of setup options, player controlled pitting and restarts, dynamic tire model, in car adjustments, proper 4 lap qualifying, and even 3 abreast starting for the 500 (iRacing STILL can't hang!!!). The refinement is absurd for a game that would end up being played mostly on consoles. From what I remember you could even create your own team with it's own chassis/engine combo, plus a few different liveries to choose from. If they did that all in 2004 I see no reason modern racing games can't compete.
So pikes peak international raceway is just running street fests and things of that nature. i hope they bring some major events back, the market might be here for it!!
You upload a look at the last IndyCar standalone game there’s been and literally the next day Motorsports Games announce a new standalone IndyCar game. Can you take a look at Touge Max G for me? Since apparently you can will dead licences back into existence lol
Pikes Peak International Raceway is still in operation. But the owners won't hold any big races there 1. For the cost to renovate the facility to standards. 2. I still believe the agreement they had in place with NASCAR to not host national races is still in effect but Idk about that part.
Loved these games! I still have my copies of both the first ICS and 2005 for Xbox. These games could be hard as hell sometimes, I could never win at Texas.
Man this took me BACK. I put so many hours into this, even just on the 500 alone, seeing how long I could last! And trying over and over to win it. The intensity of the racing has probably not been matched or at least the feeling of it is something I've not found again even in the F1 games. you're on the edge at all times. It didn't look great but everything you expect to see is there, all the little details, so I didn't mind. Surprised you didn't mention the painful yellow flag bug where the game couldn't figure out who was supposed to go where on the restart and so kept on switching cars around under yellow for the rest of the race while you nodded off to sleep, gamebreaking at times.
Back in the Dreamcast days CART championship was a favorite of mine, but sadly it was too much of an arcade game, then this released and was the perfect oval sim. Last time i played was on the 360 but i don't think it made the jump as an xbox one backwards compatible, another great game lost in time.
Really wish you could get this on the xbox store or something cos it was very underrated and I really enjoyed playing this as a kid, never expected Codies to nail the feel of oval racing as well as this felt. And possibly one of the last 'XTREME 2000's' style intros to a video game
I started playing racing game with the Papyrus Indycar race game. I loved 2005 game, I used to play with keyboard and got good a it. But i was getting destroyed until I found about setting the car and had to yahoo the setups for every track. I still have the menu song on mp3, Kirdee. Still waiting for an Indycar game that is not just online competing against other people.
I had the first game “Indycar Series” which covered the 2002 series not 2003 like mentioned. However mega game really got me hooked on ovals as a kid living in the uk
The opening music had me looking at the info to make sure I was watching GPLaps. The music was great and went well with the video. I was like WTF this is good but not a metal fan
The song kinda sounds like Limp Bizkit, Korn, Mudvayne, Adema, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Breaking Benjamin, etc. There's no doubt that the creators of this song took inspiration from one of those bands. It's definitely a Nu-Metal type of song and it's a banger.
Loved this game and the prequel to this one which I found to be slightly better. I found the spotter to be glitchy on the second version but the original version flawless.
I dragged out my PS2 copy of the game only barely two weeks ago, I'm going to have to fire the beast up once again. I remember getting medals all throughout the Masterclass (something Danica Patrick could have taken notice of!!!) then in my first race at Indy - crashed out at T1. It was definitely a learning curve for me, having played loads of Codies' TOCA Touring Car games. A very challenging game from Leamington's finest.
I don't know how known it is, but the way IndyCar has been licensing (when I licensed IMS for rF2) in itself makes a full season championship hard to license. I really am sad that there's not been a sim of IndyCar, Champ Car or reunified IndyCar since this.
Also, speaking of included drivers... The original ICS had Dan Wheldon in a second Panther entry. The black Penskes were also in the original ICS game as well, they actually didn't look that bad (a lot better than the white CPR versions), but my favorite not Marlboro livery was the PENSKE signage in the Papyrus games. I'm not sure if it's just me remebering it wrong but I swear for a frame off in the corner you could see the red/white Penske livery in the Indycar Series intro though? Also Brack's huge crash was in 2003 in De Ferran's final race, so yikes. Kenny's band is pretty good though. Mark Taylor vanished due to results/funding, IIRC however. I don't really think that was his fault, he lit up the Infiniti Pro Series in 2002 and ran away with that but had a sttring of bad performances in the IRL at that point
Set up is mostly down to 4 things wings, camber, toe, and tire pressure which it shows your previous runs tire temps and you adjust settings based on that data pretty easy to get a good setup
Loved these games, this one looks much better than it’s predecessor but I really found the earlier one much more playable. Bring on the next one codemasters!!!
I loved these games growing up, I think the first one is better even though the drivers are less known due to the handling and setups are a bit better, I spent my summer doing 100% races and loved every second, although I switched the throttle and break to the sticks instead of the buttons so my thumbs didn't die
Holy, that battle against Foyt was a killer! Not into oval simracing but I must say this game makes it look very thrilling. I played the 2003 version on PC and didn't like it, but this video is fun.
Finally someone sheds some light on this game, I had the game that came before as this is Xbox only at least in America for some reason, anyway can’t wait to watch the rest of the video lol
I always enjoyed in the Indy 500 mode oddly enough really. That was way ahead of its time. I swear the original Indycar Series game had a custom driver mode as well with both chassis/engines but I thought ICS05 had that too but not sure.
Best game for me right now for Indycar series is RFactor 2 game. I have all or most of the Ovals and Road tracks. The game does rolling starts and pitting. Cars are not bad. I also do Nascar Racing with RFactor 2. All in all, I have allot of fun with RFactor 2. Last Indycar game I had was Indycar 2 by Papyrus. There was also a Cart Racing game by Sierra or Papyrus. Wasn't to bad at the time. If I remember correctly, They did some special thing with the graphics in one of these games and if you had a special Renditions graphics card which made the game look way better. Does not work on any other graphics cards.
Jake, the first IndyCar game by Codies covered the 2002 season. (The intro for that game shows Hornish Jr. winning the title in 2002.) Not 2003 as you claim.
Great game, got them both for not very much money a few years ago and the amount of time I spent on them was worth it Definitely spent way too much one setting the cars up as even on easy it’s solid to play but that’s what was fun about it!
The music is definitely copyrighted! Im gonna keep the intro anyway! Whatever Joel!
Its just RUclips bots, They even Copyright Quake 1 Soundtrack which has it, Trent hates this shit.

I remember this. Very powerful FFB on my Trustmaster Enzo. I had to search to put it down.
I neeeed this game and I wish there are more IndyCar games today
Video title certainly aged well
What a banger of a theme song lmao
Holy, that battle against Foyt was a killer! Not into oval simracing but I must say this game makes it look very thrilling. I played the 2003 version on PC and didn't like it, but this video is fun.
Finally someone sheds some light on this game, I had the game that came before as this is Xbox only at least in America for some reason, anyway can’t wait to watch the rest of the video lol
“Dan Wheldon teaches you how to drive like a pro” 😖
I have the Xbox Indy Car Series game. Eddie Cheever was the player coach/menu narrator. I loved it back then, but never could qualify for the 500.
Daaamn superb intro song!!
this video aged phenomenally
I always enjoyed in the Indy 500 mode oddly enough really. That was way ahead of its time. I swear the original Indycar Series game had a custom driver mode as well with both chassis/engines but I thought ICS05 had that too but not sure.
This aged well
Very mixed emotions from me hearing Dan Wheldon's voice again.
When I was a kid I thought Dan Wheldon was not just a successful IndyCar driver but also the voice of the Geico Gecko.
Ah good to know! Still, hard to see 2003 in 2005!
wew that spotter is straight outta Arma 1
Great game, got them both for not very much money a few years ago and the amount of time I spent on them was worth it
Definitely spent way too much one setting the cars up as even on easy it’s solid to play but that’s what was fun about it!
I absolutely loved this game, pretty sad it was the last Indy car game. That intro song is peak 00s reminds me of Breaking Benjamin.
Or even Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Linkin Park, Static X, Korn, Adema, etc.
It just screams Nu-Metal.
The Texas in this is almost as cursed as it currently is in real life.
what a great timing
