'67 Porsche... With Subaru STI Power!? The 912 RSTI

- Although they're both flat motors, it's pretty wild to hear the difference between Porsche's take and Subaru's take on the same engine layout. And while this may be blasphemous to a lot of Porsche heads, there's no denying that Subaru's JDM STI engine is a nice piece of kit that puts down respectable power. Mike Davidson wanted a real driver's car that he could put through its paces, so the powertrain choice was obvious.

Larry Chen out here carrying Hoonigan content on his weary back during this whole pandemic.
Donovan Salgado I only watch hoonigan for Larry, I can’t stand the other channel if I’m being honest
@@jayjohnson7185 Agreed. While I like Ken Block, the Hoonigan people are way too immature. To each their own.
I wonder how many more reviews does Larry have..lol
.
@@jayjohnson7185 Larry is hands down my favorite, but I do enjoy the other channels. Rowdy boys will be rowdy.
@@donovansalgado8098 Larry is my favorite too. Close contenders are Hert and Suppy Sensei
This car deserves a build breakdown once back to regular content!
It's a Tesla now, not a waist !
Right on Mike, great to keep seeing your car get the credit it deserves. I really miss my 912/STIspec-C v1.0, the BOV and 8k rev was just so intoxicating. thanks Larry for another cool vid and featuring this Frankenstein. Mikes and my build brings out a few haters but the majority of peeps, even in the R Gruppe just smiled getting rides on Treffens and track/AX days.
AutoFocus has become my favorite Hoonigan videos
me too Larry seems like such a nice dude
#MeToo
I actually can't stand a lot of the other Hoonigan content, but Larry Chen is always awesome.
As a Porsche fan I 100% stand behind this amazing build!
Amazing job!
Larry, you make me and all the viewers smile when you smile driving that beauty!
It always amaze's me at how good the locations are for all of larry's videos. It's got me looking everywhere with a different perspective when im out now.
Amazing car!!! Also the ending always gives me a bit of the chills. Love the editing and music
Keep it up, Larry! Your content is killer man, we all thank you!
Man i love well done swaps, i have an e30 swap with 1jz vvti turbo, and i love my car, some people love it, others(purist) hate it, but its my car and is great
Larry! Your content is very informative and not obnoxious. Keep up the good work. I was wondering if this car ever had its oil filter damaged from debris?
Really like this owner being so open with the help he has got, what he has been inspired by, and what he has copied. Very cool!
Larry once again carrying Hoonigan lol!! Best channel on RUclips I tune in for EVERY video!! Wont find a guy more committed to his job then Larry!! Epic
He did a great job! I love the respect he has for driving other peoples cars and he is great at judging the cars clutch. He has a great feel.
I’m originally from Brazil and I learned how to drive a manual when I was 10 years old and the feel is everything
Cool! congrats on the feature Mike!
Love those wheels! Also love unique car features like this that were built in a garage over a long period of time and out of pure love and passion, and actually get driven and tracked to boot!
Larry, I saw this most immaculate / fully restored orange Z driving the other way from me in NorCal on the 5 the other day. I almost got off to to turn around to see if was you but then doubted myself being so north of sac.
Very cool car. I also saved a 914 from the junkyard and put a VW 1.8t into it with a gt28rs turbo, the reason being that a Boxster transmission will bolt to it so you can push those horse power numbers.
Sheesh, dat outro. Gave me chills, everytime. Thanks, Larry!
That outro says so much about the flavor & style you carry, bro. If I've ever forgot to hit the like button, it's for certain reminder!
Fan of both old Porsche's and Subies, this is so cool!!! such a sick build!!
Impressive shots! Larry Chen you are the best!👍👌🤘
Larry, I used to love Dt the most but since you started this channel you take the hoonigan crown
Larry. If these new videos were recorded before lock-down, how come the roads are silent and you're using your 1dx Mark III camera, which you unboxed in April and said you were looking forward to using it after the lock-down is lifted? Just call me Columbo LOL. Also - you make this the best channel on RUclips. Your passion for the cars is matched by your skills with a camera.
Saw this first at Cooled collective and been obsessed since. Keeps the essence of the 912 with the flat 4
The guy.. and his brother built an "Enthusiast's car with Enthusiasm.
The energy is UP THERE.
This is one of those " GREAT Builds " where it is built out of excitement !!!
Bravo " AND Driven !
Larry Chen kills it with the "RIPEST" Cars.
This car is very high on the "Enthusiast's Resto mod"
The proof was the smiles, so big ,so authentic,so constant your jaw hurts !!!
I want that plaid style seat for my shifter in my Mustang. It would look nice in my opinion.
Finally someone who knows that it's a duck tail not a duck bill
never heard anyone call it a duck bill before...
Never heard that and he called it a duck lid
idiots it’s a gurney flap or wicker bill that’s the motorsport name.
first used my American racing driver dan gurney. in the 60s
I agree. I've always felt the term duck bill was used for the front lower lip and duck tail for the rear. It's common sense.
this got me smiling for 30 mintues, u don't know how much i need that, autofocus is the best.
LOVE this car!!! I can go on and on. I'm more of a purist but still Love this car top to bottom!! Great job finding it! Even better job building it!!! 👏 👏 Keep up the great work guys!
Same here!
The Porsche 912 used the 1600cc/1.6 liter Type 616/36 engine from the Porsche 356. It was rated at 89 horsepower and 90 ft lbs of torque. It had a curb weight of 2134 lbs and handled better than the more powerful 911 it shared it’s chassis and many other components with. It also cost thousands less than the 911 which is why it outsold the 911 by a pretty good margin.
Perfect flat-four replacement for the tired Porsche engine! I wanna sti powered 914 🏁🏁🏁
Love it! 👌🏻
Btw, these ports are called
OBD (on-board-diagnose),
Not to be mistaken with
ODB (Ol' Dirty Bastard)...
Wink. 🐿️💨💨
I love it. Just needs a side skirts to cover the h20 pipes or better routing of the rad plumbing
i guess i'm in between on this...i love subaru's, love short wheel based porsche's, but not a fan of the TMIC. i love seeing nice trumpets and ITBS's, and the intercooler just hides the heart of this unique looking car.
outstanding!!! love it!!! love to see more swaps!!
I love that he kept the Subaru dipstick/cap visible so when he pops the engine bay those who know will spot it immediately
I love saving cars from the wreckers
Love tht "not a garage queen cars are meant to be driven"
So Nice ❤🇨🇦
If those ATS wheels are currently undesirable, I guess I should look around for a few sets to stockpile. These wheels will one day be incredibly hard to find AND VERY EXPENSIVE. I might as well get some now while they can still be had. Thanks for the information.
This is my favourite build ever! I love it exactly what I would’ve done… I think
I think it was back in 2016 when Louis featured this for speedhunters? awesome build!
This is my exact dream set up. a resto mod 912 with a subi engine
...Does anyone know what song it is that plays at the end of these things? I'd google the lyrics but, well...
That ride checks all the boxes. I like it.
300hp 270lb/ft, and 2000lbs??!!! Not crazy numbers but still fast
Beautiful build. But isn’t the rear mounting of the seatbelt harness a bit high? Thought it needs to be a bit below the shoulder height.
Love it! I have a 944 with cookie cutters. They look great on the 912. The Subi motor is a great choice.
nice setup. Been spotting beetles for my 1985 subaru rx engine.. (would love to know which one of 500 it is..) I like the boxers. It is fitting (pun) as subaru bought from borgward in europe for their design. seems these projects are just putting older dna back together.
Love the Suby engine in this. Awhile back I thought of this but with a custom Pauter engine with a turbo! Either way cool ride but for me Nardo Grey!
Wider wheels & tires and KYB COILOVERS and she would be golden...good review 🏁
I lpvd everything about this build it's perfect and 300hp is the right amount of power for that car
Ready for Full Accelerations
Kaji653 there is a reason that they called Porsche Turbos widow makers.
I have a 68 912 and just aquired a suburu out back.... References please on building the engine and adapting it to my car
Nice stills Larry (and Louis)!
As a Porsche owner, I could bitch and moan like alot of these "never owned a porsche, but somehow I'm a fucking purist" commenters, but I love this car because it is living it's best (second) life going on adventures with a reliable, fast engine (I presume) and an owner who cares more about driving the car than maintaining its heritage.
Good for you, Porsches were meant to be driven not be some museum piece.
Awesome build 🤙🏻
San Pedro! Excellent stuff!
Love the build and saving the car! Would love to hear what mister vape boy Lewis himself thought of the car? LOLOL Would love to see one with all wheel drive too.
0:50 for da rasp
This is fantastic and the owners seems like a genuine car guy 👍
He appears to really know what he is doing, he has probably been rebuilding cars for a while. There may be some unsaid thing, but this is a Frankenstein car and it seems to run well, putting all these mismatched parts together and being able to drive it like he does is amazing.
What a great build, beautiful car
Great to see your using the EJ207 and not the EJ257.
I want to love a project as much as this guy loves his.
Gute Arbeit, seht nachhaltig! (:
Please can somebody tell me the tune at the end of Larry’s videos??
This is awesome why aren't more tuners doing this motor swap too more older Porsche's
Mega👌 Greetz from Europe🤠 ps: when can we expect your Guys at the Nordschleife?🚗😱😎👍
When you said duck tale; I couldn’t help but woooo-whooo.
Wonder if his friend is Ron Wolfe who has the blue 912. I use to watch his videos over and over trying to convince my dad to do the same to his 912
Ha, I have the same "Speaker System" in my CRX
works wonders!
Spencer Hunter i use a jbl in my old truck, I made a spot to hang it from the roof, right in between the driver & passenger , it’s perfect. I’ve been thinking about getting another one and putting them on the back of the head rests, but idk if you can get 2 to work together or not lol.
What does he use for transmission or trans axle?
I can’t tell when this was filmed just by the progress on the new bridge lol
When you determine your mileage by oil changes...That's love.
Very cool There is nothing quite like a well used Porsche.
hell yea! you guys are in my city!
Top ten by virtue of most appropriate power plant for a most perfect chassis match...next please....
Dude those rims are amazing
Cool build. 25:49 - you could put in the 4cyl from the 718 if you wanted to keep it all-Porsche.
I thought of that too! How about a VR6 from the Cayanne, I know that it's originally a VW motor but it was put into a Porsche making it PCA legal, and use the 996/986 Boxster S transmission they make adapter plates.
Coolant pipe outside under the sill? why not run them inside the tranmission tunnel
l love it l wish we did this to ours !! Sadly it now has a new owner :( PS l hate you guys for having summer yr round and all the kool cars !!
anyone have any info on his tire specs?
even the price of boxster is going up.....few years ago its easy to find one around $3000
Sounds so good.. not the music.
Nice , good save
I've always wanted to see it the other way around. I wanna see a Porsche 911 swapped STI
honestly not a fan of old style porsche wheels but these are really nice
i have that same stereo system in my s13
25:52 You can install a Volkswagen Type-4-Engine in it and bring it up to 3,0-Litre and get 250-NA-HP out of it! Put a modern ECU (like Haltech) on it or even use 48-Weber-IDF - so, there are ways to power it very close to original - best regards from Germany ;-)
Hanging out at ports o call noice
I love that car, scary to ride in when he punches it. lol.
Shoot his brother's 914 when it's ready! haha.
Also, I'm a wuss I wanna build one with my little n/a BRZ/86 motor haha.
Okay, question: Why would one need easy access to the ECU?
hahaha love the shoutout to iwire hahaha
dude holy fucking shit thats so sick! 300 hp 270+ torque to the wheels and 2000 lbs
Pretty sure I saw that car at the Rally . I saw all the cars pull in in CAbo. .
this thing with the rwb kit? woweeee
Zach, I'm still waiting for proof of Oingo Boingo being in Ken's Focus. If provided I will buy something.
Nice Pubaru!!
A sought after Porsche with a sought after subie engine in it, way to piss off both groups. I love it though.
Are those seatbelts safe?
I’ve got a 911 and I must admit this is exactly what I would do if I was in his situation, beautiful car. That said if this dude sits any closer to that steering wheel it’s gonna end up leaving imprints on his T-shirt😂
