So as a Porsche owner, it's a little mixed bag for me. Props for doing the work and getting it dialed in properly, massive respect for that. My only thing for me is the sound. I know 300hp isn't mind blowing by todays standards but the car lost some soul compared to a header back exhaust flat 6. That's kind of one of the big points for owning a P car so for me I wouldn't do the swap but I can see why someone would. I'm also someone who doesn't really like the 718 series that are 4 cylinder turbo models, it's got to be a flat 6 in a P sports car personally. But yeah if someone found a roller and did that swap, that's awesome.
Agree 100%. And ya, 355 hp (it’s actually higher, but Porsche always underrates their cars) isn’t a ton by todays standards, that being said, there are still 0-60 times in under 4 seconds, which isn’t exactly slow, and That’s actually the “weakness” of the car, from There the braking, handling, feel and track experience are MUCH better. You aren’t going to find a stock S2K come close to sub 4 sec 0-60 and your not going to find the Gen 1 NSX stock in that range either. I’ve owned a ton of Hondas/acuras but I wouldn’t do this (at the same time, I’d never drive an older boxster/Caymen and would much rather have an S2K with an S2K motor. Even tho the car isn’t crazy quick and even has electric steering, they are a blast to drive. I still have a hard time seeing all the BRZ hype when the s2k is a far superior car and it’s much older.

Yes, even the warning lights for the missing ABS and tire pressure sensors... 😂😁😇
I'm a Porsche crazy... I dont care whats around, name any Hypercar, if I see a Porsche... thats all I care about! xD ...For the most part! But this thing, I love it, you'd think I'd hate this, but it actually still kinda sound Porsche somehow, even if its a totally different engine layout, still has that growling sound, and all the looks, and as he said it has not hurt the car in any way, any can put a Porsche engine back in it later on, so yes, YES! This is sick! And its clearly very fast...! I bet there are a fair few that has a Porsche with a bad engine just sitting and they cant afford to fix it, especially if its older it might be very hard to get parts for it. V8 swaps are fun and cool but it ruins the feel of it, sounds so different, this fits much better. Amazing work!
Well, it *does* raise the center of gravity of that motor quite a bit, probably 12 inches.
@@SteveC-Shaman but looses about 80 lbs of weight. So maybe it balances itself out?
@@driverpsyche Fair enough, maybe it does. Hard to say without driving them both back-to-back.
@@SteveC-Shaman wow. Are you serious? When Porsche went from 997.1 to .2 they were bragging about lowering the engine by less than an inch. 12 inches is a ton. Is it pushed forward at all?
@@KosmicHRTRacingTeam I mean that the K20 has its (very heavy) head assembly and turbocharger much higher than the flat-six does, pushing up the CoG.
Who else would want to put a Honda engine in their Porsche 911?
I thought I would hate this but it is so cool - I love that all the gauges work. So funny to see a Porsche tach hovering at 1500rpm when cold just like every Honda does!
one of my favorite things is even if the engine blows all the hard work is out of the way so you just buy a junkyard motor and swap everything over and drop it in just as easy as oem porsche engine would but at fraction of cost
Is it really that easy?
Can someone tell me. Why not forge the old 997 block. And add a gtx35 to that along with the setups.. those enginea cant be that weak.? Just cant put my head around why youd decide to k20 it.
I can feel the tension and anger and I love it!
🤣
Sound doesn’t match the car.
Dope still has that era Porsche type sound with the k24 it's remain nimble with it unlike a v8 and the has the reliability unlike a boxer motor
Brilliant! If that’s not two fingers up to Porsches engineering team I don’t know what is. A modified 4 cylinder Honda Civic motor which is more powerful than a 3.8 Porsche engine (and more reliable) is fantastic. Credit to you for building it…
Beautiful composition , smooth editing.. and an interviewer who clearly waits and listens..
Very Nice thank you
Wonder if he made the motor mounts himself.. Proprietary perhaps
this does not feel sacrilegious at all... this feels like saving the whole car... amazing.
a GT3 without a flat six is like a gun without bullets, you might as well just ditch the whole car
@@mro9466 So in other words you came to this video just to complain about an impressively skillful build for the sake of being a pompous purist?
I had tracked an SI with that motor for a few years, real good car all around, great motor choice! Fun car and build :)
Yesss Ontario plates !!! Represent 🇨🇦
Centre caps for the alloy wheels. I feel the car really needs them. Love the car. Great job.
Every single time I watch a Larry video I start working on my car haha
This is incredible. New world achievement unlocked! I also live in Ontario, Canada, so I may consider doing this if it becomes available.
I would definitely get myself some "912 Turbo" badging for the back to mess with people 😂
I think it might be a K24. He said at 10:00 it came from a 2014 civic si which comes with a k24. It could be a k24 block with a k20 head. Great video!
The definition of K-swapping the world
I have a 996 4S widebody that just had the engine rebuilt 5000km ago, cost a fair chuck but to the previous owner not me. Nice to know options like this exist.
Yes it's cool and all but that raspy 4 cylinder sound kills it for me. Some people love it but the older you get the more childish it sounds.
I’d say the sound is the only con, for me.
Agree 100%. And ya, 355 hp (it’s actually higher, but Porsche always underrates their cars) isn’t a ton by todays standards, that being said, there are still 0-60 times in under 4 seconds, which isn’t exactly slow, and
That’s actually the “weakness” of the car, from
There the braking, handling, feel and track experience are MUCH better.
What a bad ass ride, and this seems like the most reasonable solution to the problem of bore scoring
Very cool, I would guess the K24 motor is lighter than the 997 motor, so the handling should also very different. Again cool project.
I was just wondering what the weight difference is...
A 2005 997 with the N/A 3.6ltr (dressed) is about 445lbs.
A K24A is about 415lbs (dressed)
Add a turbo manifold, turbo, wastegate, bov, piping, etc to the dressed weight of the K24.
@@Lobby_Bound the stock m96 weighs 497lbs fully dressed. K24 with all turbo accessories with adapter plate and flywheel weighs 416lbs. I weighed both when I did my 996 k swap.
@@baysidefabrication What about CoG? Just curious.
as owner said: It’s almost 200lbs lighter with this new engine setup
I know him! Lol!! Congrats, Nick. Incredible work, as always.
This is so awesome 👍👍 I wish he’d share the build info so this could be replicated, probably quite a few 996’s that could use this when engine is on end of life. Given the shared motors on older boxsters it may work there as well
Correction, he did say he’s working on the kit, great to hear 👍👍
I'm normally not a fan of these swaps however this is one that makes sense and improves the car.
Now I see why Porsche wants to join Redbull-Honda F1 team.
The engine sounds so so good.
this dude playing REAL LIFE FORZA! Honda LEGENDARY ENGINES! with Porsche legendary status, 911, tuning, chasis etc! Imagine a Porshe + Honda engine! SHEESH
Pretty damn cool & for sure an extreme example of "k-swap the world."
Good work, Nick & thanks for bringing it to us Mr. Chen
I need this in my life because of the price of engines I've always steered clear of Porsche, but if I can get a kit so I can do this myself id be all for it.
Cleetus needs to see this video after that Turbo S debacle lol
Cleet just got a crashed Porsche with cracked block, and I immediatley thought K-swap, and low and behold someone already did it.
Hermoso proyecto, los felicito 🙏🏼💪🏼
I have no real experience outside of forza on any k20 or Porsche but I can only imagine this must hurt the Porsche fan boys feelings.
It does and I love it.
Disagreements aside, this guy did a great job.
The porsche purists are dying right now 🤣😂🤣😂😂
I wonder if the swap affects the center of gravity of the car. With boxer motors it sits low and has a lower center of gravity, in turn it gives the car less body roll and better lateral stability. I definitely like this swap and respect it but I would like to see lap times to see if it’s faster.
insignificant. The crankline will be exactly the same and TBH it's probably slightly lighter overall. It would be more noticeable with some fat dude driving!
Alright. Game over, that guy wins. Most perfect car ever.
That's an awesome swap. And very well done.
I had to google K20, first I thougt about a kompressor. You mus be kidding, what a great build you´ve done. M E G A !!!!!
Can you do plugs without dropping the motor?
in another video I think he said he loosens the subframe to lower the engine down some
I saw this car getting built in a shop out in Elmira a few years ago, crazy to see it here on Larry's channel!
It was the best cost effective decision..20k or about 7k to 10k..if that much.. easily decision for me..👍🏽🏁
I always thought the 911s sounded terrible. This sounds great. Such a great swap.
3.8 could Rev to 8000rpm, and will always sound way better than a K24, a supercharger kit would have been better but hey variety of life 🤷♂️ cool vid as ever and can’t knock the install, super professional
Honda engines can also rev very high and clearly it doesn't sound bad at all.
Engine out to change the spark plugs?😁
Would of liked to hear what it actually cost. Very interesting!
Coming back to this and seeing that it's a 997.1 is VERY satisfying.
I totally love it.🤓 It's carefully done and doesn't sound wrong like they said. It's also giving that engine a chance to put its power down properly.😏
As much as I love Porsche 911's as they are I would definitely get one like this as well beautiful!! Awesome vid!
