At about the 2 min mark, you were talking about safe shooting at steel. My experience, is if it is a lead core with a copper jacket, straight on to the target steel at 25 feet is more than enough to be safe, especially with the target suspended like you have it from above. the impact will cause the target to move away from the direction of energy (you) and cause the fragmentation to go into the ground. Yes there will be spall going upward, but that will simply rain don from gravity. I have shot 10's of thousands of rounds of jacketed lead, (standard ball stuff) at steel and never have I encountered any issues with stuff flying back at me. Disclaimer; my set up was similar, but I used a "Sheppard's hook" to hold the target. In my minds eye, that is so similar to hanging it with rope, but more durable.
The 223/556 will leave a small sent. More like a crater. Won't deform the shape of the steel but will take a small chip out. For 25 dollars I think it would be worth it to use as a 233 target. Won't last forever though.
I have a mossberg patriot 308 fixed with the vortex crossfire ll 4x12x44 and I couldn't be more happier. Its a low budget rifle that is sighted in at 400 yrds hitting a 6 inch plate every time. But good videos fun to watch.
Well 1/4 inch AR500 is really rated for handguns, there a chart out there that lists what thickness of AR500 you need for what caliber. I have seen 3/4 inch AR500 that was rated for 50 caliber but you have to fire at the target at the correct distance so it has slowed down enough before impact. Still a great video it helps folks understand what is going on.
This was actually about the integrity of the 1/4 in 500 walmart plate. I feel it stood up rather well. A few dents don't hurt. Still would last quite a number of hits over time. Just a nice simple target. Can of spray paint makes it like new again.
I was actually surprised that it held up so well since 1/4" is only rather for pistols. Good information for those of us in the process of setting up our own steel range.

120 years of developing the optimal bullet for the velocity, and no real need to compromise design to handle wide variances in velocity at impact. Same with the 45-70, a bit of arc, and no scorcher, but what a wallop on target.
Ralph Reagan The 30-30 has probably taken more deer in north america than any other cartridge. It is a fantastic caliber for thick woods where shots are rarely over 100 yards. It gets trash talked because everything is now marketed towards magnum calibers and the newest latest and greatest. The old cartridges that are still around are still here for a reason. They work!
Bought one yesterday shooting 243 and 223 from 300 to 500 yards and didn’t put any dents in it. It’s a great target for rifles if your shooting at least 200 yards away
@@WHOTEEWHOWow pretty nice to stop even 308, Have you ever shoot to similar fixed targets?, I am courious on how lower their endurance is considering they wont diver any energy like this ones, as far as i understand
I know this will get lost in the comments but if you want to hang a plate that wont swing badly when you're shooting it. Get a semi truck mud flap and cut it in strips as wide as your steel targets. Bolt the targets to the mud flap and then screw the mud flap into your stand (I use cheap 2x4 saw horses). Works like a charm and can get hit with thousands of misses before they even look like there are holes in it.
I bought this exact target the other day, put around 150 rounds of .40 out of a 16" carbine, about 100 rounds of 7.62 Tokarev, and close to 200 rounds of .380 ACP on it without a ding from ranges of 20-100 yards. Nice target for the price!
Lol my first deer rifle was a 770 in 243 back like 10 years ago when I knew jack about guns. Worst. Rifle. Ever. The bolt stop literally broke so when you pull back to chamber a round the bolt flies out the back of the receiver. Guns accurate enough to get the job done, mostly because of the trigger. Still is terrible tho
The rifle rounds making dents in this target, has NOTHING to do with it being from Walmart. lol It's simply too thin, for high velocity cartridges. 1/4" AR500 pretty much ends at pistol rounds. 3/8" AR 500 is fine for non-magnum rifle rounds, 50 yards, and out. Hope this helps with any confusion...

I use wd40 as a solvent, motor oil as an oil, and high heat bearing grease for rails/bolts. Cheap, extremely effective, and all my guns work... very well actually... thinner lubricants like rem oil (cleaner only, do NOT use as a primary lube, wears too fast and evaporates) and Hoppes just runs and doesn't stay where you need it to. Any grease will work, but for ars there is a lot of heat so bearing grease I’ve found to work best. And any rail, because it stays in place. Motor oil is plentiful and inexpensive, and is thicker so it doesn’t run as bad and doesn’t evaporate. Just my two cents
I actually bought this same one on accident instead of the 3/8ths. ( Shooting .223 / 5.56 ) Honestly i know you aren't supposed to shoot 1/4th with rifles but at 100-110 yards it has held up for over 4 outings to the rock pits. The only time it gets damaged is if you hit the very edge of it. Obviously it will wear faster than the 3/8ths but i think it is okay for an accidental one time purchase
Plate works well with 223 and 556 as long as your not using armor perceing rounds getting the plate to stay up is tricky I made some wooden stands and connect them with lags plate has to remain loose so it swings
Out Of The Pistol Calibers, I Was Really Surprised By The 9MM And How Much It Moved The Plate. The Larger Calibers Performed As Expected. For The Rifle Calibers, I Was Pleasantly Surprised By The Shotgun Slug. The .308, 300 Win Mag And Larger Calibers All Performed As Expected. From A Price Point Perspective, I Think That Folks Using 9MM And 12 Gauge Slugs Or OO Buck For Self Defense Have A Couple Of Solid Performer's In Their Hands. Great Video, Thanks For The Education!
Charlie Otto Puth Jr henry golden boy 500 dollars the (almost) exact same rifle as the regular henry 22 except the golden boy has electroplated golden reciever and an octagonal barrel same length same capacity same sights but the regular is 175 dollars i know i worked at a walmart for 4.5 fucking years saw both of these sitting in the case for that time if you can afford it fine but dont make it seem like its better than it is
I bought mine for $425 at walmart and it is an amazing gun im not saying its better then the regular one because of the differences im just saying that a henry 22 is a good gun im sorry that i cant say a henry goldenboy is a good gun
Earlier this month at the Indiana State Cowboy Shoot, there were birds that kept trying to perch on top of the steel targets on the rifle range. Spalling from a 45-70 cut one of the birds in half. That was at somewhere around 300 yards. A 45 Colt managed to do a bit more damage... But that was on a direct hit at 100 yards. Splat.
You can find guns other than ARs in 223 cheap. Also, 223 does a lot of damage to steel targets. I shot mine with a 270WSM, didn't do crap. 223 hit the edge and went chipped it.
obviously as we already know the 300 winmag is on another level.....but once again if you watch closely you see that BIG LEAD makes a difference..... GREAT VIDEO
Shooting steel is all about fps and ft/lbs of energy at the time of impact. That's pretty much what the directions on the package outline. 30-30's, 12 ga slugs, 450 bushmaster...Yes they all use heavy bullets but they are traveling much slower than ,magnum rifles and therefore do not penetrate the steel. To use magnum cartridges like the 300 win mag you just have to shoot from a far enough distance that the bullet velocity and energy on impact are within what is outlined in the target specs. Good video, I think the Wal-mart AR 500 steel looks to be pretty durable.
I have 2 of these plates and ive shot the hell out of them, surprisingly 556 is the only caliber that will go straight through them my 308 just leaves a divit my 7.62x54r dents it like crazy but still wont go through, def good reliability on these plates, they can take a beating
I have a 3/4" Swinging Plate I Shoot it's made from Mild Steel....The top is a 3" Circle and Bottom is About 5"....The .22 just completely flattens the .22 paper thin and about 3/8" circle...The .357 will flip the Target over and over....The .223 and 30.06 flip the plate and Mushrooms the hole back and I have to weld the hole up and up.....
This is the same plate I used with my 300wm shooting 215g berger hybrids at. This is the perfect sized plate for long range hunting practice.. its about the size of the kill zone. I just shot the plate I have at 505yards and there was hardly a dent.
Lots of fun, however, it is a Champion plate that you bought from Walmart, just like the one I bought at Academy. I am going to buy targets and stick them on for a point of reference, I expect the sound will be a little dull. Great fun
I was thinking about going to the gun range this morning. Now I'm watching this on my phone so I can see my ammo situation. Looks like .308 but I wish I had some 30-30.

Did you ever hear of a hard weld? Its what they use on saw blades. And camshafts.

Thanks Dylan
I buy nice guns so I don’t have to clean them🤣
I’ve never have an issue with 5.56, which I actually like because being poor I can’t afford plate after plate. Lots of fun. Great vid👍
🖒🖒
If you have access to a 7 mm Remington vs the 300 win mag would be an awesome 😎 video
I made a silly edit of shooting it. You can't really tell the distance but its about 110 yards
Try 5.56 greentip
Those will also put dents in Walmart targets
@@ethanmonroe8486 ar500 is still ar500 no matter what store it comes from. they have different thicknesses rated for different calibers.
Plate works well with 223 and 556 as long as your not using armor perceing rounds getting the plate to stay up is tricky I made some wooden stands and connect them with lags plate has to remain loose so it swings
Lol a hi point
two of them!
Sam you must be upset that he hasnt gone through a midlife crisis and spent $800 on a pistol😂
😂😂😂🖒🖒
🖒🖒
Jerimiah McMahon Maybe I shouldn’t tell you how much I spend on my 9 mil, and I’m 15.
That 4570 and the slug rock that plates world 🤣
💪💪
Over priced.
I can get AR500 from eBay that's thicker and shipped for free.
Omg I love the THREE-HUNDRED WIN MAAAAAAG
Got some walmart guns too. HighPoints hahahaha
😂😂😂
Thanks for watching Joe!

Lol
Fun video!!!
I love the sound of ringing steel,
Especially when its someone else's ammo 😉
Do you have a Henry 22? I got a henry goldenboy and it is an amazing lever gun.
I dont have one, but that is a very nice rifle!
🖒🖒 i dig em
Earlier this month at the Indiana State Cowboy Shoot, there were birds that kept trying to perch on top of the steel targets on the rifle range. Spalling from a 45-70 cut one of the birds in half. That was at somewhere around 300 yards. A 45 Colt managed to do a bit more damage... But that was on a direct hit at 100 yards. Splat.
WHOA!
no 223? come on man, always 223
Dont even own a 223. Have never had the itch
WHO_TEE_WHO get the itch, super cheap for ar15s right now
Cheap to me is $100. The cheapest ARS I have seen all around the $500 Mark. I'm just a poor old boy
You can find guns other than ARs in 223 cheap.
Also, 223 does a lot of damage to steel targets.
I shot mine with a 270WSM, didn't do crap. 223 hit the edge and went chipped it.
Yeah but if you're going to get a two to three you might as well get a semi-auto. Bolt gun wouldn't be as much fun
I've been wondering about these plates. This is what RUclips testing used to be. Nice concise video. Thanks for your review.
Thanks for watching Billy!
Great video your the MAN! That 300 win mag is impressive.
Thanks Mark!!! This was a fun one!!!
I’m beginning to love that 45-70 ... amazing power and love lever action looks
Solid brush gun. Really gives the 3030 a run for its money.
Absolutely!
obviously as we already know the 300 winmag is on another level.....but once again if you watch closely you see that BIG LEAD makes a difference..... GREAT VIDEO
Thanks for watching Jay!
WHO_TEE_WHO ahhhhhh..... good vid
Great video who_tee looks like you had a good time in the country. Thanks for the show and God bless you....and Texas!
Thanks Kevin! God bless
Love it! You are just like a kid at Christmas! So glad I found your channel!👍
Thanks for watching!!!
I have 2 of these plates and ive shot the hell out of them, surprisingly 556 is the only caliber that will go straight through them my 308 just leaves a divit my 7.62x54r dents it like crazy but still wont go through, def good reliability on these plates, they can take a beating
💪💪
love that 30/30, also love that 300 win mag, 450 bushmaster rocks too
I have a 3/4" Swinging Plate I Shoot it's made from Mild Steel....The top is a 3" Circle and Bottom is About 5"....The .22 just completely flattens the .22 paper thin and about 3/8" circle...The .357 will flip the Target over and over....The .223 and 30.06 flip the plate and Mushrooms the hole back and I have to weld the hole up and up.....
223 and 556 are able to put a hole in those too after sometimes of shooting.
Thanks Teng
Loads of fun! We appreciate it!
Thanks for watching Jason!
This is the same plate I used with my 300wm shooting 215g berger hybrids at. This is the perfect sized plate for long range hunting practice.. its about the size of the kill zone. I just shot the plate I have at 505yards and there was hardly a dent.
Awesome! I have never shot at 500 yards!
Same i hit that plate with .300 win mag all day long hardly a scratch
Lots of fun, however, it is a Champion plate that you bought from Walmart, just like the one I bought at Academy. I am going to buy targets and stick them on for a point of reference, I expect the sound will be a little dull. Great fun
Thanks Clark!
Lots of fun! Surprised that pallet held out!
I was thinking about going to the gun range this morning. Now I'm watching this on my phone so I can see my ammo situation. Looks like .308 but I wish I had some 30-30.
They are both a lot of fun to shoot! 308 I can normally get cheaper
WHO_TEE_WHO it's an AR 10. I got some new mags to test out anyway.
Nothing beats clay. Great video.
The slug was a great add on, all my favorite rifles was in this videos 🐗
Thanks for watching Chris! Oonk oink!
Love seeing this budget stuff! It shows us all what to get and what to trash! Thank you!
Thanks for watching! Everything i do is on a budget. Lol
1/4" is a rimfire plate. 3/8" is for handguns/rifle.
