Hey everybody, this video took a lot longer to make then I expected, and to top it off it was about twice the length I thought it would be. I hope you enjoy. The next video is all about my favorite movie of all time "Ed Wood" and the nature of sincerity and mediocrity.
Carole and tuesday is very much an imperfect show, but like the world and music without its imperfection it could not have been as beautiful as it is. In that sense, it is perfect because of it has imperfections, and I love every single seconds of it
I loove this video. I actually have forgotten about Carole and Tuesday so, this felt like something of a reminder to finally watch the show 😂 which i will... when I'm all caught up with my school works which i procrastinated on 🤣
"Mother" is probably probably my favorite song (if not Galatic Mermaid), not because of all the singers are singing it, but because it ties in the 3 main characters struggles. Though "The Loneliest Girl" for me is kinda heartbreaking. Though the show has its flaws, the songs and music will be the thing that sticks with me most. Let me know what your favorite song is.
That's a tough question honestly. I'm really partial to "lay it all on me" "unbreakable" and "army of two". But I love most of the songs on the soundtrack for different reasons.
Somehow your channel fell out of my feed a while ago. Always great to see more love and insight on this show. I knew they placed real songs as the episode names but didn't really know how to connect it to meaning. My fav song is "Someday I'll find my way home"
Great job with this video essay! I really loved how you contextualized many of the episode titles with why they were what they were. This is the first video on your channel that I’ve watched and I’m subscribing :)
Don't know u or this channel, but upvoting b4 I watch just bc I'm happy to see C&T content. (: Edit* Prob best c&t vid I've seen. Loved the extra focus on civil rights movement.
@@MediaIsMythic I had a notification that your post was trending on reddit. It was at 2 upvotes. They weren't wrong; that's a bonafide trend for the C&T subr.
josh, i love seeing the growth in the quality of your vids in the last several years. thanks for giving one of my fave anime in recent years the brain tap treatment... now do the great pretender!
Carole & Tuesday is one of those shows that I think can be somewhat polarizing depending on what your political views are and at the time of its release, especially rang true (and I’m going to apologize in advance because I’m gonna get a bit ranty with this). I both loved and hated the show. I did genuinely love the music as well as the journey that the MC’s (yes, including Angela) went through as well as the general message about diversity being important while at the same time, I think was being a little too “on the nose” with its political statements, especially how inherently obvious the show was clearly trying to reflect Martian politics to the equivalence of American politics during the Trump Administration. It felt as the show was being a little too ham fisted with that part of its message as it was inherently obvious the show was trying to portray Tuesday’s mom as a Trump equivalence. As a political centrist (and feel free to disagree with me because I think everyone is entitled to their opinions), I don’t think there’s so much a rise in racism and xenophobia in the last 5ish years, but rather it has become a politically-motivated focal point in order to drive certain aims. For example, I don’t believe Trump is racist/xenophobic. I think what his aim when he was the President was trying to preserve American economic stability and in order to do that, he needed to create a stronger enforcement of illegal immigration because an influx in illegal immigration both puts a drain on America’s resources and creates an unstable job market. It got turned into a racism/xenophobia issue because the Democrats knew in order to reclaim political power, they had to paint Trump as a racist because they know most Americans aren’t racist and would consider Trump’s antics as deplorable. Needless to say, the strategy sort of worked, although I’d say Trump’s blasé attitude toward the dangers of COVID-19 were likely his biggest downfall toward re-election. While yes, you can make the arguments that there has been a rise in hate crimes, they aren’t so much driven by social movements, but rather media manipulation portraying the movements to be a bigger problem than they actually are. One piece of advice I tell everyone is to steer clear of mainstream news media that has a political leaning because you can bet your ass that is filled to the gills with propaganda to help influence a certain social agenda. I also like to point people toward Chris Wallace’s interview with Morgan Freeman. When Chris asked Morgan how we can stop racism, Morgan clearly stated “stop talking about it.” Instead of making the conversation about race, make it a conversation about people speaking equally. Making the conversation about race is a “divide and conquer” tactic. It’s a method used to try to turn people against each other in order to gain a political aim. I have made friends from people all across the world, of different races and ethnicities. Do you know how often we talk about racial issues? None. I just have perfectly normal conversations with these friends. Things like “what have you been watching lately, or play any good games of late, or man, work has been rough lately.” In the few times the discussions do get political, we don’t really talk about race. Getting back to the show itself, I think those semi-subliminal messages didn’t do the show any favors because I think the issues it was trying to cover are far more nuanced. I felt the writers didn’t have a strong enough understanding of American politics (Martian politics) to realize the issues are not specifically racism and xenophobia. I’d consider those to be more surface layer than anything. I guess here’s my basic take on this. If you grow up in western civilization, there’s a 95% chance that you’re not going to be racist or xenophobic. Granted, I can’t pull an exact number because “how is it possible to case study racism/xenophobia” since it’s a subject you’ll have hardest time getting honest answers for, but I’d say out of all of the people I’ve met in my lifetime, I’d say about 95% aren’t racist or xenophobic. With that in-mind, who is this series aimed for? A western audience? The Eastern (I.e. Japanese) market which is more xenophobic than the western market? As I watched this show, I couldn’t tell what audience it was trying to speak to because for a “relatively normal” western audience, it felt like it was “preaching to the choir” with its message. Perhaps I’m not the intended audience for this show and that’s why I found it’s general message being somewhat preachy and ringing somewhat hollow. Perhaps someone from Japan might find this far more powerful than I would. It’s really hard to say. The only thing I can say is from my perspective, I felt the show’s full message wasn’t fully fleshed out. That isn’t to say the show didn’t have any brilliant writing at all because it did…I just felt like the political messages involved were too shallow and shouldn’t have been such a focus. Now, there is one thing I did want to say that was briefly mentioned in this video and perhaps it’s just Brain Tap’s personal view more than anything else. I didn’t think the sexuality aspect of the show really mattered. We can speculate whether Carole and Tuesday are romantically right for each other until we’re blue in the face, it wasn’t a focal point. Shoot, we can’t even really speculate that they are a potential couple because the show focused more on their friendship than anything else. I think that was far more important than “Carole and Tuesday should hook up.” The fact that it focused on how an affluent, civilian white girl and a poor, refugee black girl can become best friends was far more important and spoke far more to me than Carole and Tuesday being gay, straight or bi. Then again, I’m a straight white male whose best friends with a Bengali immigrant, so perhaps that would speak to me more than the romantic relationship aspects. Either way, there was no “romance” between Carole and Tuesday in this, so I’m not sure how it can even be a focal point. Then again, I think that was more Brain Tap’s personal wish more so than an actual direction of the show.

The music is on another level. This anime is seriously too underrated

Galactic Mermaids' song is part of my work playlist.
