Hey everybody, sorry about the wait on new videos but my working on the Dracula video, combined with the release of the new consoles has made work insane. So far the Dracula video is sitting around 30 minutes long and there's still so much more to go so that one is being worked on simultaneously with other stuff going forward. This video was fun to work on even though it took a bit longer than expected. I wish more people could see this movie, it deserves to be more widely known as we near its 20th anniversary.
This animation even with scenes out of context makes this a hidden gem even more, especially with the hair sakuga. And the song, "I Can't Stop Loving You" to top it off gives me goosebumps and makes this ending kinda...melancholic.
When I first saw this movie, I was really little and only saw the tail end where the city started to fall apart and “l can’t stop loving you” played. For ages I had this scene plastered in my mind and had no clue to the life of me what this movie was called or about. Then I saw it for sale in JB and with no hesitation bought it, watched it fully for the first time and was mystified!! Truely a work of art 😌
I have exactly the same story man I remember seeing the end very young and I searched for the movie for a very long time before finally watching it again years later
I've loved this movie since I saw it as a kid. That soft drop into "I can't stop loving you" while the whole city explodes lives rent free in my brain. So damn choice 😤
I remember back in California my brother and I lived not far from a BLOCKBUSTER clone called HOLLYWOOD. They had arcade games so we'd frequent a lot with the quarters we had. One day after renting and watching Princess Mononoke, this anime came up in one of the opening trailers on VHS. We were both fascinated by the gritty yet mysteriois trailer. Once we had enough money saved up (a couple $). We went back to the movie store and started browsing. We found it. It was right there in VHS form, with Tima on the cover. After renting it we ran back home as fast as possible. And boy were our minds blown! The colors, the animation style, the context, the story. It was breath taking. Granted, we were too young to fully grasp what was going on politically in the anime, but it was a movie that opened up me up to my anime journey. Its now been 23 years since Ive seen it. But ive never forgotten it. The music, and the tragic, kind of weird romance between an android and a human, is weirdly nostalgic. And I love it. Oh yeah, this anime made me fall in love with Jazz...and now im a musician. 😂
Oh jeez.....this film seems reeeaallly interesting. Love when people make vids about hidden gems like this. Thanks for talking about it, i definitely wanna throw it on my list of stuff to watch!
They played this movie at a local theater as a classic, and I decided to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did because experiencing it on the big screen was incredible; it's a visual masterpiece that creates an unforgettable experience. Hearing "I Can't Stop Loving You" surround me as chaos was unleashed was honestly one of the most memorable moments I've had at the movies.
I'll never forget the Bandai/Emotion opening, it moved me. It's so strange how most anime lovers haven't watched this, and yes it's hard to find. I was lucky to get from blockbusters as a kid. I'm determined to make younger generations watch it. It's beautiful. The sound track, characters, voice acting, cinematography. This film should be studied.
I personally grew up with this movie, I had it on a VHS, and I would re-watch it so many times, I loved it so much, and personally the style of the animation was beautiful in for my eyes, and I still love it to this day
I can't remember how I first saw it when I was little (I think my dad rented it for us from a Blockbuster or a library?), but I loved it. When I was in my early 20s I found a DVD copy in a dollar store and was super excited. It's definitely my favorite Anime film.
It truly is a hidden gem. I hope it gets some kind of resurgence and becomes more accessible. I'm not mad about the blu-ray copy I ended up having to buy, it's beautiful and I know I'll love having it in my collection, but I do wish it was easier to show to people. Thank you for showing it to us! And a great job on the video essay.
Just saw this movie in theatres last night. Had no idea about the plot or setting and it blew me away. The designs for the city and its early 20th Century aesthetic are prevalent everywhere. The style of the characters and editing are reminiscent of the Golden Age of Animation. The classic music and the cinematography immersed me so much in the type of environment they were trying to convey. Even if you aren’t a fan of the story told, you can’t underplay the incredible value this movie has from a technical and artistic standpoint. I’d highly recommend this movie to everyone as a must see.
I’m glad I was given this for my birthday when it first came out, I’ve always loved it and it was the first time I had really experienced such a melancholic ending to a film.
Thank you very much for sharing this wonderful analysis. To be honest, I was traumatized by this film seeing it back in late 2001. That audio dissonance of that Ray Charles classic song against a terrible image of the Ziggurat falling apart while Kenichi was holding on to Tima's hand was so heartbreaking. It really hit me hard. And after 23 years, I cried again watching it. My wife with a beautiful heart noticed this and got angry at this movie and doesn't want to hear that song "I can't stop loving you".
I had to watch the movie on one of those pirate anime cites, but holy heck did I love watching it. I had only seen a few scenes or frames and had to find a way to watch it myself. The movie is such a gem and it's on my top ten favorite films
Great video! Watched the movie for the first time yesterday and it was absolutely breathtaking. I just wish I'd seen it in theatres as it was clearly made with this in mind - it's very hard to see what's going on in a lot of the super-zoomed-out shots on a TV, for example.
I knew absolutely nothing about this movie when I went to see it in theaters a few weeks back. Wow what a film! It's not perfect, but it has a real heart and soul that shines throughout. Don't even get me started on the amazingly jazzy score!!
I just watched this masterpiece for the first time! So i wanted something more, and them this video came up! Thanks, thats a very nice looking on the hole history about the two metropolis. Cheers From Brazil, buddy.
I first saw this film on Adult swim Saturday night when i was 5 or 6 and fell in love with it. I was lucky enough to find a copy at a anime convention ten years ago
Finally watched this movie today after knowing about it for so long. The first time I was exposed to this film was when I saw the trailer. The trailer was an extra in a dvd for Spider-Man the New Animated Series. Those extras had other trailers for other anime movies such as Memories. Those trailers always stuck with me, but the trailers always freaked me out as a little kid, but having finally watched them, I can say they are one of a kind.
I remember watching this with my family on tv. I don't remember what channel but, we ended up recording it on a VHS, we still have it but now we don't have a VHS player.... My parents and I always discuss the themes and feelings of this movie.
I would love to know what channel it aired on, it aired on adult swim with exclusive content back in the day but the airing isn’t found due to the movies obscurity and a lack of interest from others
I never really understood this film as a child it was always just on in the background however, I recently rewatched it and with all my life experiences, I view it extremely differently, like this film was the crossover point between classic animation and modern Japanese animation and I think like the story represents this shift from analogue to digital.
I still have the DVD from it’s initial US release in the early 200’s. This, along with “Steamboy” from around the same time, helped cement my love of steampunk.
Excellent video man, you hit every point, and this movie definitely deserves to be recognized. I remember when I first found out about it, I was like, why haven't I heard of this before, I watched it soon after, and later on after reading up about more I found out just how unknown it was and I was shocked.
2024 Friday May 10th, 10;58, just finished the movie. I love this movie and I look forward to rewatching this. The colors and animation with these colors is outstanding and I really like the music in it. Highly recommend to everyone else to see this film.
I watched this at an arthouse theater in my town, back in 2000-2001, and after enjoying it so much at the theater, of course I was going to get this as soon as it dropped on DVD. The first press was a nice cardboard, fold design, but as with most paper products it's delicate and colors smudge and chafe after repeated handling. I watched it a total of 2 or 3 times and it has been tucked away for about 20 years. I think about it one in a blue moon and haven't layer eyes on it in years. It's good to know I still have it...now knowing it's not so easy to find on stream or any other method, save from piracy.
I'm currently on that mission man, to widespread this gem. I even struggled to find it in Spanish as most of my close friends don't know English, but I did. Bests
Watched it in my Japanese culture class its one of rhe best films so far 10/10 in my book it felt like i was a little kid again the colors and the music were beautiful lots of emotion ❤
Great gem 💎 & introduced me to True Sadness for the 1st time... Of losing someone you care bout, I never cried the same way - until my father passed away, but I'm ok now & I hope that others can see this movie too

I’m so glad i discovered this movie when i was young. It is such a beautiful work of art and encouraged me to watch more anime films like it and to keep drawing!
I've just finished it, In my opinion one of the best movies similar to akira and many of my favs. Considering this Discussion in this video, I do completely agree it's A true Hidden Gem!
My older brother had this movie when we were younger, he was into drawing so I believe the art style is what interested him. As far as I know we still have it somewhere. SPOILER ALERT: My favorite plot point is how Rock hated the robots so bad that he didn't want them to be the ones to kill his 'father' so Rock himself does it instead by pressing the BOOM button that kills them all including himself. That is one powerful end to a character that i've ever seen personally lol.
Great video and a great movie. The only thing I would nitpick is that the "western anime boom" mentioned in the video is a very US-centric view, which is fine, it's just not representative of "the west". That boom happened in certain parts of Europe in the 70s, with a second wave in the early to mid-90s. The early 2000s were actually pretty quiet on that front by comparison. Again, just a nitpick!
I've got one of a couple of Steelbook versions. Mines got a blu ray and dvd on it with a must attach clear slipcover. 2 of Ghost in the Shell BD steelbooks also require the slipcover. Once one watched this movie I couldn't see how anyone would forget it in truth I though until now it was a rights issue. Didn't know most haven't heard of it. I kept the dvd version as it had the only known dvd material second disc on a 3 inch disc.. Some have it as a full DVD-5 disc. 5 inch disc? no mines 3 inch.. All in a card board wrap.
Ah metropolis, I watched this is in my grandparents house during the weekend, I teared up in the end then my grandpa decided to put on Iron Giant(since I haven't watched this one too), big mistake.
@@MediaIsMythic my grandparents knew I was into robot animes, my parents probably told them I liked Zoids and Gundam. They must've went to the CD/DVD store at a mall back then, the employee must've recommended them those two robot movies since both are not that violent and are really packing good timeless moral messages.
Did we watch the same movie/ Its artistically beautiful, and I would say its up there in animated movies I saw in just the art department. Its story leaves...alot to be desired. On paper it seems straight forward, but theres so many various subplots going on, and they are either left unresolved or poorly resolved. We've been building up to the revolution and now that it happened, its resolution happened in a jump cut. I'll admit I saw the movie a long time ago and maybe I need to watch it again. I can watch it for its visuals, but I cannot say watch it for the story.
Yeah, I find it odd how most reviews of this movie don't mention how it's a veeeeery tedious movie to watch, especially on rewatch. The pacing isn't great, it tries to tackle more themes than it can handle, and the story can be a bit confusing. I know it's trying to be thoughtful, but it comes off as the people behind the film biting on more than they can chew. While the art and direction mostly make up for it (I'll forget everything I dislike abt the film when that climax hits, it's such a satisfying thing to watch), it probably should've stuck to a more linear story.
As far as I know, it's not streaming anywhere. I was able to buy a Bluray copy on ebay. Some other people have told me they've found it at Target and some other stores before but I've never seen it out in the wild ever.
@@Ramonafloyd I also love the original. I recommend this movie because it borrows a lot from it but does something completely different with it. I'd recommend buying a copy only, it's not that expensive despite the fact I've never seen a physical copy in the wild. I think my bluray steelbook special edition only cost me about $25 - $30 on ebay.
it has both flaws and strenghts. I've come to appreciate the style of the anime (old children's style manga) a lot more and notice the coloring and landscape/background designs more then I last watched it in... 2002??
(This comment is mainly for christians who have watched the films akira and metropolis, or anyone with an open mind who is respectful) i must add this! im sure only very few people have caught onto this, but katsuhiro otomo is a prophetic writer, and it seems tezuka and his son are too, and although they arent christians (at least from what we know), and it is fiction, there is a little bit of reality in what he writes, God can and does still speak through whoever and whatever he wants to, and there still is prophetic elements that are actually happening in the predicted time frame, akira predicted the 2020 olympics woukd be held in tokyo, and would be cancelled due to an unforseen event, it also predicted the ammount of voilence and lawlessness we see today accurately, meteopolis seems to predict things that are starting to happen in real life right now as well, including robots being idolized, worshiped, and set up as gods, transhumanism, destructive protests, corrupt politicians, ect, theres also much of the same themes of violence and lawlessness that are seen in metropolis, much like akira, i could go on about the prophetic things i noticed in this film, its a whole list of things i think i could make an entire video about, its all very interesting! There's an even deeper level to it than most may not realize! Prophetic writers tend to really grab peoples attention for a moment, but then are forgotten about because people unconsciously avoid difficult truths, or its hard for people to grasp these things, jules vern was another prophetic writer and wrote about submarines way before they ever existed! If you have read this far, Godbless! 😊
I just saw the movie completely for the first time... That scene of Fifi the Albert II robot sacrificing himself to buy them enough time to run away was burned into my little mind for so many years, hell for damn near 20 years I looked for this anime/movie and I finally found it.
It’s late 1920’s Germany, the Nazis were the villains, the underground rebels are are the communists. And you see them still replicate violence, from a liberation aspect. So it’s not a one sided viewpoint, but the mardukes are most definitely the Nazis and duke red is an obvious hitlerite character. The underground rebels are trying to overthrow Duke red. Even their propaganda is communist themed. Idk how you’d do this video and not even talk about that thematic undertone.
Hidden? Not really. I got a fair amount of publicity. Gem? Definitely not. Big disappointment. Boring, muddled story and ugly, uninteresting characters.
@@ed209onthestairs it sure does it's a nice movie definitely not perfect by any means, there is s story in there but it's never fully developed that's what makes it so life like and a tear jecker it's a tragedy.
By chance I saw a Eureka Entertainment steelbook Blu-ray of this movie being announced a couple of years ago. I'm so glad I bought it, because I think it's out of print. The first time I ever heard about this movie was when I bought a Monty Python VHS, back in the year 2002. The tape contained a Metropolis trailer. After that I didn't hear a thing about this movie, until I saw that Blu-ray online.

I strangely found the blu ray in Walmart for $8 bucks the other day and its already one of my favorites movies of all times.

Fun act atlas was voiced by the actor who played alladin
Ah metropolis, I watched this is in my grandparents house during the weekend, I teared up in the end then my grandpa decided to put on Iron Giant(since I haven't watched this one too), big mistake.
That sounds like a tear jerking combination lol
@@MediaIsMythic my grandparents knew I was into robot animes, my parents probably told them I liked Zoids and Gundam.
They must've went to the CD/DVD store at a mall back then, the employee must've recommended them those two robot movies since both are not that violent and are really packing good timeless moral messages.
I have the Vhs copy of the film, my dad bought it many years ago
Did we watch the same movie/
Its artistically beautiful, and I would say its up there in animated movies I saw in just the art department.
Can you recommend this type of anime?
Wow i must be lucky cuz i found the bluray at my local music store, i got it for $10
I'd say you struck gold yeah, I've never seen it in person other then the copy I ordered online ever.
@@MediaIsMythic wow! Sounds like something is finally worth something in my life lol
You can now get it on blu ray for 10 bucks on Amazon.
Sorry you spent so much...for a dvd version
I actually got the bluray for about 20 bucks
@@MediaIsMythic the metal case one?
Yep
@@MediaIsMythic nice
Where can I find this movie?
As far as I know, it's not streaming anywhere. I was able to buy a Bluray copy on ebay. Some other people have told me they've found it at Target and some other stores before but I've never seen it out in the wild ever.
@@MediaIsMythic I have the original Metropolis but I would love to have this ..
@@Ramonafloyd I also love the original. I recommend this movie because it borrows a lot from it but does something completely different with it. I'd recommend buying a copy only, it's not that expensive despite the fact I've never seen a physical copy in the wild. I think my bluray steelbook special edition only cost me about $25 - $30 on ebay.
one of the best $15 that I've ever spent
first saw this in my aunts house, it was in Japanese and I couldn't read Korean subtitles so it just felt like a mildly horrific and boring acid trip.
it has both flaws and strenghts. I've come to appreciate the style of the anime (old children's style manga) a lot more and notice the coloring and landscape/background designs more then I last watched it in... 2002??
I agree
Maybe you forgot it, i never did
I like how it say "West" when is talking about America,
the whole world already had anime in the 80s, America it was late in the game.
Give this a Hollywood remake in live action. If done right it could work and bring a new light to this film
Does a robot get his head blown off in this movie trying to protect a boy that was being chased by another with a gun?
I just saw the movie completely for the first time... That scene of Fifi the Albert II robot sacrificing himself to buy them enough time to run away was burned into my little mind for so many years, hell for damn near 20 years I looked for this anime/movie and I finally found it.
This film sounds like doremon
Haven't seen it
Yes, it's a similar art style.
Anime
I know this video is old but the mardukes are definitely the Nazis….
Like literal militia brown shirts keeping the status quo by killing robots.
Do you know why this one stays underrated? Bc is simply not a good movie.
Hidden? Not really. I got a fair amount of publicity. Gem? Definitely not. Big disappointment. Boring, muddled story and ugly, uninteresting characters.

@@MediaIsMythic Truth hurts. This isn't on anyone's top ten list.
@@ed209onthestairs Well, it is on mine. Anyway, everyone can have his own opinion and express it. :)
