I remember first seeing Memories when I was in middle school, shortly after I first saw Akira. Magnetic Rose really left an impression on me from how beautiful, yet terrifying it was. It helped show me how art can carry such different and delicate balances and show it’s true beauty through it. And Cannon Fodder has only made more and more sense to me as I’ve grown. Im glad you discussed these featurettes ☺️

I really wanted to give you a like, but far be it from me to impose my will, to be the one to destroy the efforts by the finest minds the world has to offer. I humbly put forward this in its place. Nice.
Growing up, at different times, I remember seeing act 3 and act 1 from VHS tapes several years apart. Both excellent works in their own right. I had no idea they were connected and had more to offer until today. Many of the greatest works of our generation, from that golden era of creation. Sooner or later VR will let us go back.
Literally the same experience for me, its been probly 15 years since I saw this last, I'm hyping it up to watch with some friends
Stink Bomb for me is the best of 3
First time I saw Magnetic Rose, I was tripping on shrooms. To that effect, I thought it was the greatest anime I'd ever seen. So absolutely artistic.

Morimoto is a genius, Magnetic Rose is my absolute favorite. I've seen it dozens of times and have 2 tattoos based off of shots from it. Masterpiece.

Yeah Magnetic Rose is amazing. I think a lot of credit should also be given to Satoshi Kon, who wrote the screenplay for Magnetic Rose

The original manga for Akira is just freaking crazy visually. Every panel is crammed with insane drawings. We take it for granted today, but Otomo and his assistants drew it all by hand. Almost every page has at least one item that is extremely challenging to draw by hand and get it to look right:
ships, planes, sci-fi vehicles, and cars in perspective (this is crazy hard because of the curved surfaces on these vessels)
groups of people and crowds interacting with each other over a large space
buildings and shapes offset from the horizon line at strange angles
projecting complicated shapes and patterns onto planes receding into space (windows on a building, signs and text, etc).
crazy architectural renderings which are consistent spaces from page to page (much harder than it sounds, to get the Olympic stadium to appear to be the same size/shape no matter the angle we see it from).
It's just so hard to draw these by hand. Most people getting out of art school, and don't know how to do it. Many professional illustrators don't know how to do it. And it's on every page.
I was offered a tour of the studio that made Akira, but I broke up with the girl who offered before I got the chance to go. Sigh....
It's interesting that you mention this because I read recently that there's barely any animators that know how to draw Mecha nowadays. Studios have been relying on CGI so much that it's become almost a lost art
@@jmiquelmb it's a trip because of how much 3D modeling shortens the distance and does the work for you. I've learned to draw both methods, and just take it from me, drawing a scene with complex perspective by hand is hugely labor intensive, compared to posing a model and drawing over it. Now that the genie is out of the bottle, it just doesn't make sense to return to the old way of doing things.
I would imagine at best, today, you'd have a 3d model, then have an artist draw over it, so you'd have a hand draw looking effect. Today, this is a ubiquitous technique in Manga and comics anyway...
@@wolfumz I mean, I'm not against 3D per se. It's just that considering the state of the industry, it's been used mostly to cut corners to the detriment of the quality. There's a ton of good animes that are properly animated that resort to 3D rendered vehicles that clash stylistically in a pretty bad way. Sometimes it's done in an acceptable way, like in the SSSS series since they mix hand drawn with renders. And there's times when 3D genuinely improves what is possible to do, like the crazy 3D fighting battle against King Bosse in Ousama Ranking S1. This one looks amazing because it's created over a full 3D rendered sequence that makes it much easier for the artist to finish with amazing hand drawn animation. In the end the real problem is the pathetic state of the industry, that barely manages to stay afloat with their crazy production lines. And also it's partially the viewer's fault since they gradually start accepting bad uses of CGI.
@@jmiquelmb I watched anime in the 90's. It was awesome. When I look at the anime on display on Netflix now, I instantly back away. Can't stomach the look. One did catch my interest though: Megalobox.
Between Akira, Stink Bomb, and Roujin Z, Otomo seems to like stories of feeble nobodies suddenly obtaining absurd power out of their control.

Memories was just art, pure art, great craftsmanship coupled with a deep story. Gotta remember works like this to avoid being swept away by the tide of works that are just for entertainment. Nothing wrong with entertainment just itll keep you in place while art will take you somewhere.

Well said...I too was deeply affected by the flims u mentioned..1for thier sheer beauty in execution & stroytelling..& (much like Akira, Ninja scroll, & ghost in the shell) these movies gave me a high respect for the Anime artform!! & stroytelling!!!
@@knowgo411 In Australia we had those 3 and Wicked City in video stores in the 80s early 90s on a distributor called Manga video. Then nothing else got released until Neon Genesis unless you went to China Town and got pirated stuff that might not have subtitles or dubbing available.
Till this day older Aussies call Anime Manga.
Magnetic Rose was poetry visualized. Only sheer imagination could've gave birth to such an prepossessing part of a truly magnificent film.
Every frame of animation has a certain intensity to it you just don't see too often these days. There's something about real paint and sweat on cels that is hard to replicate digitally.
That's not it lol it's the production itself, most aren't in the position to spend years on something like this with three separate teams off the back of what was the most successful Japanese movie of the time, with some of the finest talent in the industry
@@Stevem Right, I totally understand that and agree time and budget are the most important factors in allowing artists to fully utilize their talents and create something incredible. And I'm understanding of the insane work conditions animators face. I don't mean to imply that cels are superior to computer pixels or vectors. Ultimately, it's the art and story that has the biggest impact. What I mean is that there is a certain look to paint on cels that is appealing to me whereas digital art can often look flat. The shift to digital was really noticeable in the early 2000's. The digitally colored characters often would clash with the hand painted backgrounds. Or when CGI vehicles would be incorporated in anime, it would look really awkward (they've gotten a lot better now though). Even something as subtle as film grain adds to keeping a cheaper production visually stimulating. I think about this a lot as a digital animator who tries to emulate the look of more traditional cel animation - and as someone who is all too familiar with working on projects that have strained timelines and budgets.
Love these videos by the way - It's fun to hear a deep dive into these classics.
@@MicahBuzanANIMATION thats fair, nowadays process has changed a lot i like clip studio paint a lot of good brushes but even outside that overlay texture can go a long way or bringing in more traditional medium in certain ways, compositing tricks in after effects etc
Truly ahead of their time. Masterpieces that still hold up by today's standards. Hell, I'd say in many cases they surpass today's standards!

Definitely a classic that was run after the success of Akira on the Sci-Fi channel in the states. Mid nineties brought about the true mainstream perusal of anime here. Of course it obviously blew up to massive proportions and ultimately influenced a generation of artists and creatives. I have a soft spot for these classics because to us in the weirdo underground we had them constantly cycling. Great video on a great subject, as always!
There’s this man who I talk to at my local town’s farmers market: he watched anime since 1991. Now he runs the Farmer’s market. He was telling me how “underground” anime was. I grew up watching anime since 2002. I remember people used to get made fun for liking it. Lol. But I enjoy the history overall

Something I appreciate about Magnetic Rose is the scene where Miguel first sees the hologram of Eva and runs headfirst into it, even though he probably knows what he's seeing probably shouldn't even be spatially possible. It, and the image he builds for himself as a dashing knight throughout the story, foreshadows his doom as he's particularly susceptible to the fantasy this ship proposes to him.

Holy shit, I've been trying to remember the name of this for over 2 decades now and just couldn't remember for the life of me. I watched it back in 2000 when attending a local anime club's weekly meetup in Orlando. Fell in love with it that night but forgot the name of it.

Our taste and interest in anime is so similar, everytime you upload, it feels like you're making videos specifically for me Haha. My Morimoto, Otomo, Kon collection of work and memorobelia all occupy the same shelf, because I feel they define an era. If you ever get the chance, grab yourself a copy of the super rare English print of Memories. I enjoyed the freestyle sections when you're expressing your own opinion in this video, sounds natural and off script.

She brought it home probably after Food City or Fry’s grocery trip some time when I was like 12 years old.

i clicked on it on netflix or tubi or wherever I saw it having no idea what to expect, and I still have no idea what to think! Very cool and weird, all of them were, imo. Watched in subtitles, loved the animations.

The title of this video and the content in it is a very rare blend of content these days. The title draws you in and then the videos story proceeds to build on it rather than just have the title of the video be the culmination of the video. I like this approach way more than any other. It's almost a norm to just post the end question as a video title that it has become redundant. But in your case it's different and the end of the video is still uncertain so you just follow the story to the end eager to find out what's next rather than wait for the expected.
I don't even know how I got here (YT algorithms doing its magic.) but I've absolutely loved your analysis of this. I loved Memories! I remember when I first saw it I was having a migraine of sorts and my recollection of it feels almost dream like. I will watch it again thanks to your video. On a side note, I do remember "stink bomb" being sooo frustrating since the main character seemed like a total dumbass. I enjoyed it though.
That 2nd story about a viral outbreak and inept governments seems far fetched.....
