- Carole & Tuesday was one of my most anticipated anime of 2019, and it finally finished last week. After some reflection, this is my review on it - an ambitious project nearly overflowing with potential, with incredible production values, that is unfortunately bogged down by a messy plot in the second half.

Synopsis: It has been 50 years since mankind began its migration to the terraformed Mars, where they live by in the comforts of advancement in AI. Carole lives in the metropolis of Alaba City, working part-time by day and playing keyboard by night. Tuesday has run away from her home in Hershell City to escape the grip of her wealthy family, and instead hopes to pursue music with her acoustic guitar.
After a fateful encounter, the two decide to perform music together. Up against the AI singers that dominate the music world, the two of them believe that together they can convey their feelings through their songs. Will hard work and luck be enough for the duo to create the biggest miracle that Mars has ever seen?
What did you think of Carole & Tuesday? And what was your favorite song from the soundtrack? Mine was "Mother" followed by "After The Fire"!

I can’t get behind your critique. I love this show for its realism: Angela is a depiction of how abusive parenting and fame can lead someone to self destruction. Cybil and the black knight are realistic depictions of the danger of psychotic fans. And Eziekel and Carole are realistic depictions of what could have been. Sometimes things don’t work out how you thought, and this show does an excellent job of depicting that. If it was all sunshine and rainbows, it would have been a forgettable show imo.
THANK YOU
@@quilboy93 First of all, this story isn't only about the two main characters, even though the title would have you believe that. It's just as much about these two teenagers, as it is about the social and societal pressures of stardom. That much should be clear from the way Watanabe chose the finale to include all the musicians from Mars and all of them singing about a political topic. It's not that I think the show is perfect or anything. I just feel like you pick the wrong parts to criticise, because those little stories you mentioned are really good character building moments, especially for Tuesday.
I personally think the pacing of this show is lacking. Especially in the first part of the second part. What I don't like about this video though is that right of the bat he makes it out to be some kind of trainwreck, which it surely is not. I'd even say it's one of the better anime I've watched in a while. With wholesome teeny girly characters, who are not overly Japanese and so repressed that they can't even hug one another. The show doesn't get much attention from the anime community as it is. So being out here hating on it right off the bat like that I feel I have to get defensive. It's a good show.
What I don’t understand from the review is that you’re saying the politics was too much, even though it was foreshadowed since the beginning.
I can’t get behind the “it was too political” argument because a lotta shows/media are inherently political in nature, but don’t get the same criticism. Not attacking the reviewer but usually most people with that mindset tend to complain about it because they can’t be bothered with anything challenging certain biases and think it’s an sjw conspiracy.
That being said, I would also agree with the reviewer that a lot of the show could of been executed better in general. Angela out here just randomly popping Xannys and Percs had me ???. I get why she did it, but it felt left field. It’s as if the writers said “how can we make it more intense on top of everything happening “. Some arcs did feel off but for the most part I loved the overall concept.
I think it’s nice that we got a show that gave us more than we asked for. While a lotta folks can’t be bothered with politics I think that part of the series makes you understand the dynamics of their friendship and development.
@@mmjflorida509 It's only "politics" if it leans left. If it leans right then everything is a-okay, since *clearly* fascism is the natural order of things.
domino2515 shhh don’t say the part we both know 😂
On the real tho, most people just salty the politics aren’t masked with big tittys and tropes. Not talking about the reviewer, but to most anime audiences. Tons of people love FMA for its magic and characters, but if you look at the message and philosophy of the show it is very political and goes deep into government corruption.
Then again the second part of Carole and Tuesday made me feel like I was re living 2016 😂 I guess people are bothered by the parallels of the show and real life. That being said the “it was political” argument still sucks lol
I will give the review this. Execution was done a lil meh at certain parts.
You already lost when you assumed it was solely about Human Emotion vs AI. It’s way deeper than that. It’s about ALL of the struggles artists face in the entertainment industry.
FACTS!
Over his head, simple as that lol
I don't disagree that it's about all of the struggles artists face. That was very clear in the second half of the show between Angela's problematic "fans", drug and alcohol abuse, artistic suppression by police and politics, etc. And those are certainly deep and important topics, especially in today's society.
What I was upset about is that the first half of the show doesn't include any of those. They're not even foreshadowed (aside from Cybelle being a "fan" of Tuesday's). The first half has the emotion vs AI battle and, to an extent, the difficulty of being discovered in a crowded industry despite being passionate about your craft. Politics wasn't really present aside from saying Tuesday's mom is a presidential candidate. So when the second half suddenly threw all these new struggles in your face and dropped the initial topics, to me it felt sudden and disjointed. If they had been introduced in the first half (or at least more heavily foreshadowed) and then gradually developed rather than going from 0-100, I think it could have resulted in C&T being a better executed show overall. So it's not the content itself but rather the execution of the content I was disappointed with. I hope that helped clarify my stance.
And regardless of whether we agree or disagree in the end, thanks for checking out the video!
Clarence Foster This seems like an intended theme, but it’s muddled because almost everything (directly related to the music industry) goes perfectly for C&T as they climb up the ranks.
It is because he is a typical pretentious anime "I am so into anime, watch me prove it with eye roll worthy shallow basic bitch rhetoric about the uber obvious to pass myself off as a superfan.
I disagree with one thing, Cybelle doesn't need to have any redeemable quality, why would she need to? She's a psycothic creepy stalker, nobody should empathize with that sort of person, besides, even in reality they don't have such qualities either, so I see that point more like wining ಠ_ಠ
That's totally fair! I think I made that comment moreso because I enjoy more complex villains/antagonists like Makishima Shougo or Askeladd, whereas Cybelle felt one dimensional in comparison. But like you said, it isn't necessarily a bad thing to have characters like that depending on their role in the story.
@@JDefenseAnime you have a point there* I get your point, but for the little amount of episodes I think it's ok not developing her, it could take time the show didn't have 🤔
At least we talked like normal people* 😁👍 that's good to find in this platform
Also she can sing and she's sexy. 2 redeeming qualities
@@Toaster_luvin just because she looks good and sings good doesn't mean shes any less of a creep didnt she also give something to Tuesday that burnt her hand and she hasn't been able to perform on her guitar? She also bit her in the neck.
@XDranzer000 That creep has nothing to do with Kybele, she's the goddess of nature's power and life!
As a whole, I think Carole and Tuesday was a great show. While yes it has some minor problems here and there, I don’t agree with your criticism of the show. I think the point you pointed out is a very shallow understanding of the nuances that the show presented.
Firstly, the Cybelle arc is a necessary step in the whole show as it shows the reality of having a toxic relationship. I think it is used as a test of the bond created between Carole and Tuesday.
Secondly, your opinion about the kidnapping of Tuesday. I disagree with what you said, because this problem has been built up since the start of the show. You might’ve forgotten or just not paying attention, but since Tuesday ran away, her mother has been trying to get her back. This is also a way to test the limit of their bond, and to build up the future conflict ( the political portion.) in the second season.
Thirdly, your take on the political portion, is disregarding the tension between Tuesday and her mother, which you only understood poorly. The political portion also acts a way to show the opposing nature of Carole and Tuesday’s background, which is to show that background doesn’t matter.
Lastly, and this part is the part that made me leave a comment, the Angela arc. The Angela arc has been built up since the very beginning. Her relationship with her mother, was shown to be an abusive relationship (which you conveniently didn’t mention in your video.) Angela was an example of an artist who claimed the top spot when their young, where her relationship with her mother was abusive, and added with her feeling like Tao was neglecting her ( which also has been built up since season 1) and the stalker is also a realistic insight to a young artist’s mental state, when a psychotic stalker tries to forcefully insert themselves into the artist’s life.
Bonus: You said that you liked the finale of the show, the 7 minute miracle, “Mother”. But you clearly doesn’t understand the meaning of the song, and why Angela was a main singer of the song. The song mother is a song that is meant for Tuesday and Angela, to reach their respective mother’s heart. Tuesday was using it to reach her mother before it’s too late, and Angela used the song to pay respect to her adoptive mother, as a final thank you and to show that she loves her mother, even though all the things that happened. (Well at least that is how I interpreted the song.)
Well at least that is what I picked up from watching Carole and Tuesday, maybe I am reading to deep into some of the meanings, but your arguments are just loosely based on very little understanding on the nuances and storylines that was built up from the start of the show.
Oh and another point that I disagree with is the no character building of extra character. In my opinion Flora was a really well explored character, with a past that brings pain to her due to the regret of betraying a friend.
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
This yes
Exactly! The show is clearly not for him
I am surprised by your dislike of the second part! Everytihing happening there had been prepared in the first part. I was surprised about all the themes they've woven into the over all story of the two girls an their way in the music industrie. They never saw themselves as rivals to angela. All the time it was mentioned they where surprised of it. And the theme of artificiallity vs nature was topped by the fact of Angela beeing a designer baby made to sing songs by a A.I. falling into a deep identity crisis. I thought the second part of this show made it even better and made it more relevant. Without it it would have been way to predictable and the ending less impactful :)
When I was watching, the only thing I felt like was truly foreshadowed in the first part was Tuesday's mom being governor coming back to be a plot point later. That being said, I wonder if some of those later plot threads like Angela's downward spiral and the suppression of music would have more obvious foreshadowing if I were to rewatch it... You make a good point about Angela's identity crisis though, I hadn't considered the angle about her being a designer baby being a parallel to her singing music written by A.I.s. Good catch!
@@JDefenseAnime if that is all you "foreshadowed" (easy on the polysyllabic words - you might hurt yourself) then you definitely have NO business reviewing anime or PRETENDING you are a critic.
They literally hinted to the ENDING in the beginning. They hinted at civil unrest and a unifying event. And so on and so forth.
YOU fixated and some non-existent AI versus old school song writing "theme" where that was merely a TINY piece of exposition for setting the scene (culturally).
Seriously, go eat a banana.you dumb primate.
🙊🙊🤮🤮
I think the anime's main intention is not wheather its Ai vs Real music. But a journey of being a musician or being in a music industry is. Like how Carole and Tuesday were who didnt get the Mars Brightest contract vs Angela who went puppet and got most of the severe consequences.
One of the things i agree with you is when they did add the political drama and stuff. I do understand the intention about it but my main concern is how they didnt execute them properly. like i really disliked how they went go "Oh Mom. this is Jerry did for the bombing" and Whamo! already fixed the issue. It didnt even doesnt shade the fact that Valerie wanted to stop the immigrants without having to show wheather she felt guilty nor had internal conflict. i really just hated that part it lacked essence.
For me Carole had better storyline on the second half and Tuesday was main meh especially when she had a crush on the reporter dude, (like what was that for?)
Angela on the other hand... is actually not that bad but i felt that it did drag out especially on the stalker arc. Other else "Atleast for me" was good, i mean it did already portrayed how people wanted her to stay like the idol figure and how Angela was constantly abused back then by her Mom at the sametime she felt completely useless without her mom. anyways sorry for the english but this was atleast what i wanted to point out.
Yeah, I think you're right in that a major aspect of the show was showing some of the extremities of the music industry. Angela's stalker, the temptation of drugs and impact they have, the amount of stress popular musicians have to deal with, how easy it is to lose everything, etc.
Valerie's switch did feel abrupt, though I think they just wanted to rush all of those plotlines so they could get to the Miraculous 7 Minutes in time. I thought Tao's random reveal to Angela that they were designer babies was out of nowhere too. I also agree on Carole having a better storyline in the second half. I think in the first half, Tuesday got more attention because of running away from home and the Cybelle arc, and Carole was supporting her. But in the second half Carole had the small arcs with her dad and Ezekiel, and this time Tuesday was supporting her.
Don't worry about your English! I thought it was pretty good and I appreciate you leaving a thoughtful comment (and for watching the video in general)!
Angela's arc in the second half was actually really enjoyable to me. She starts the series wanting to move from modeling to singing and would go anything to do become #1. By the end of the first half, shes won mars brightest amd has a huge record deal. In the second half though, we see the cost shes taken to get to the top. Her life in danger because of an obsessed fan, losing her mother, and Tao's perfect AI that could potentially replace her. She's stressed and put under alot of pressure to keep her place at #1, that she's forgotten about why she wanted to be a singer in the first place. Its only after she's lost her mother and overdoses at the mars grammys when she realizes this, and stops looking at Carole and Tuesday as her rivals, but as fellow artists. The 2nd ED "Not Afraid" is Angela finally realizing that she's not afraid of opening herself up to her truth anymore. She doesnt want to be made from an AI algorithm designed to make her the best singer. She wants to sing simply because, she loves it.
My comment probably couldve been worded better, but i just hope my point comes across
I would even argue that it's less Ai Vs Real music but more so stop having a reliance on AI and algorithms. Throughout the show we see the woes of why following such programs is bad and how it takes over almost every facet in life.
You're missing the point with the whole Cybelle arc. Life be like that sometimes. Shit happens, it doesn't need any great meaning or triumph or warm fuzzies, because like Cowboy Bebop taught us, sometimes shit happens and you just move on. I think everyone has been at a high point, or what felt like on the path to a high point, just to have one thing after another go wrong. This is quintessential Watanabe. Life is messy and ugly and random and not here to make you feel good, or make any kind of sense. Shit Happens, scrape it off your shoe and keep walking, because you are the only one that can get you there.
Agreed
god, forbid angela have a character arc and be more than just a rival character for the main duo. I think you were wrong to assume she was just written to be an antagonist.
I agree
theres nothing wrong with having a character arc her arc just sucked
Lol I feel like this guy is nitpicking. This show was REAL. Heartfelt characters, great music, cameos for artists, heck even the characters are based on their real singers. I think the person that made this video was looking for a different story than what was meant to be told. This show is about the dedication that one has for a dream despite the odds. It wanted to show people from different walks of life coming together to share this vision. It starts off as a competition but the show is a journey of friendship and following the music which I personally think was told perfectly.
I loved this anime personally, it really made me emotinal in the best ways, I dont know i just think it's great while i agree the second part seemed a bit iffy i still enjoyed it fully ^^
I'm glad you liked it! I really loved the music, I actually still listen to it a lot haha
I got the impression that the show tried to emulate real life more than writing a cohesive plot. It’s messy, not everything plays out in a satisfying way, and most of the time the story feels like a big improv experiment. But that didn’t bother me so much because, well, that’s what real life is like. It felt more real than if everything was tied up in a neat little bow.
but don't we watch those shows to forget on our real life' problems ?
I had the same feeling watching the „second season“ of Carol and Tuesday. It felt cramped and confusing, hopping from one character to the next one and almost never show what impact it had on both girls, meeting these people. It was a nice show, but it left me with a sweet-sour taste imagining what it could have been.
But in the end, I was suprised and relieved when I read „...in your mind“, that made the series more wholesome to me.
I feel like carole and tuesday deserved more seasons and episodes from the start, we could've dived deep into alot of the characters and really feel their growth. Even after the 7 seconds we've been teased about we could've gotton more episodes and more stuff to focus on. The show had so much potential and it was a shame it had to end so fast.
I really liked what they did with Angela, but the Sybel part and especially the political part....My reaction to the ending was "are you kidding me?"
Tuesday is the daughter of the ""evil"" politician of the moment, it's known but never adressed to put down hers and Caroles career. They could have made a plotlind with people thinking that C&T are just a political tool to make Tuesday's mother more friendly (Carole being an earthling) or talk about how Tuesday's celebrity affects her mother's campaign.....Instead of that they sing a song and magically everyone turns out migrants-friendly ?
2nd half was just as good as the 1st with the lyrics of the songs being apart of the story handled episodically.
To each their own! I'm glad you were able to enjoy it, and I do agree that without the way the story turned in the second half, we wouldn't have been able to get songs like Mother or After The Fire, because the lyrics directly correlate to what was happening. I just didn't like how it felt like it came out of nowhere, especially the stalker and assassination stuff. Thanks for checking out the video!
I would have to disagree. I think it's great that they focus so much on the political development, because it's such an important topic to us nowadays. Especially when they release a song about power for a better time that we need so much. Ezekiel was such a great addition and the whole refugee topic was well done. I think the second half is incredibly strong and follows very realistic struggles. Especially with Angela's storyline. It is something I could partly relate to and I was happy about her finally being able to do what makes her happy
I think you just built up unnessary expectations for this show in the beggining wich made u dislike the direction the plot went to. Its understandable but also sad, it broke a beautiful expirience that you could have had. I personalny dont agree with most of your opinions accept for few characters that indeed have not been developed enough and the stalker plot. I like that you shared your negative opinion tho, aspecialy when most of ather reviews on youtube are only positive. The "honestly what the actual fick did the writers thinking" wasnt very good tbh, what kind of argument is that? Overall good vid bro.Thubs up
That's possible! And haha, I generally try to be more positive in my opinions because constantly being fed negative opinions can get tiring, so in this video I tried to balance out my negative opinions with some more positive takes as well (like how I loved the music, still enjoyed the characters despite everything, and thought it had a great finale). I appreciate the nice comment and I'm happy that you liked the video overall though!
Exactly! I watched it months after debut but I watched it with 0 expectations and left with my mind and heart blown
I actually liked both parts. Part one was setting up much of what happened in part two. I feel the stories flowed together well
I totally agree with the way carole & tuesday come off as side characters. They seemed so plain to me. The only traits that stuck with me was how much of a soft push over tuesday was and how carole fights for what she wants. But other than that i grew no emotional attachment to those characters. On top of that they seemed really ungrateful to me and as if they only cared abt each other and their music because of how they treated Gus. I get that he was seen as a bit of a pervert for comedic relief but it just annoyed me during scenes where he literally went to prison so they could preform and they didnt even give him a thank you. That being said i really liked all the other characters that weren’t carole and tuesday. I think Angelas drug addiction was a good portrayal of musicians turning to drugs like Elton John. I loved Cybelle since she had more character and spice than main characters and the absolute creative art styles of all the other musicians blew my mind. That was probably my favorite part of the anime since it gave me new perspectives for music and help me boost my creativity in my own art works.
I like the second half of the show it showed both side of the music industry in a recognized way the fun hard work and bad about that kind of life
You only made one point in this entire video I agree with. The plot gets iffy with what they wanted to push in the first season. In my opinion cybelle is a fine character because of what she represents. She’s supposed to suck. That is her character so you can’t say it’s bad. Also them not being able to win sets them up as the underdogs so it makes no sense to criticize that.
To continue my comments you don’t make any decent comments about the second half. If you can sum up your opinions by saying “I didn’t like angelas plot” then say that instead of wasting our time with your bullcrap. This is insanely over dramticized and honestly even if I agreed with you I’d still call you stupid for making such a messy video
I was disappointed with the lack of development in Tuesday and Carole’s friendship since the first episode, also I was hoping that the romance tag was for them developing romantic feelings for each other.
Sane
So you selfishly wanted to make it homosexual? Current world logic. Two can’t share the same space unless it becomes sexual. Says a lot about you.
Dude no kidding, and it wasnt even like they put that much into their friendship. Like they just meet, play once and are instantly best friends. What's even worse is that it was really sloppy, Carole posts "our first song" on their Instagram and then Tuesday says "I wanna make more songs with you" like....no fucking shit. Did you decide that when Carole made and Instagram and then posted the picture? I mean they literally have no chemistry either, compare them to Johnny and Dandy. Like those 2 actually seemed like friends who wanted to make music.
@@lucapachee9863 ok well just because two people are friends doesn't mean it has to get romantic.
People in real life have done the same thing carol and Tuesday have done and just started a band overnight, it's supposed to feel rushed because they're both in a ditch and trying to get eachother out of it so they're desperate.
You're being overly picky with it
Basically, the pacing got really weird. To be honest, I genuinely enjoy the realistic depictions that were related to music and the industry. So I cant agree completly because I did like the drama that was being brought up in the 2nd half. I agree comepletly that when it focused more on the characters and music that the show shined the brightest.
Personal opinion, the first part had trouble hooking me. The second half made staying with it worthwhile. I thought it was beautiful and the finale was more powerful because you knew what each character had been through to get there. They humanized the struggles of stories that don’t normally get that type of attention. What to do when your family is hurting people you care about, how stars can use their popularity to elevate new voices, how fame can ruin lives, understanding yourself when you lose the thing that defines you, the trauma child stars can experience, and how success doesn’t automatically mean you’re wealthy. Truly thought it was beautiful.
Wat makes Carole and Tuesday special is the realism they depicted of the world we live in. They showed the ugliness and beauty of the music industry, our media, technology, people, and politics. We may not have ai or live in mars but we will in the next 5 or 10 years, by that i mean, have ai technology.
Tbh, this anime should get more recognition and appreciation for its realistic depiction of our world.
I disagree, not everything has to be sunshine and flowers. The struggles make the finale that much more impacting
Honestly, while I agree with a lot of the points made, in a way I appreciate the fact that they chose to keep a few things open. What I feel is that they just wanted to showcase aspects of this world and leave it be like yeah this stuff happens as well, so move on(especially about the stalker part). Another thing I appreciate is the diversity aspect, at a time when every damn thing tries to showcase their diversity as some achievement, here it is taken as natural aspect of the world and something I really appreciated. The soundtrack tho my god I loved each and every one of it, and the fact that each song in some way or another had a relation to the charecter really helped in building a connection with them. Would love to hear your thoughts on this
And in conclusion

THE MERMAID SISTERS were robbed and about time someone address that!
Carole and Tuesday is a fascinating show in several different facets and like you said, the ending of the show was phenomenal (well, aside from that end card bullshit).
But, much like you, I was REALLY put off by the political messages that were taking over the show in the second half. That’s not what attracted me to the show, it wasn’t a theme I wanted to see in the show and the way it was written, I don’t understand why it had to be in the show. However, even with that aside, I don’t understand how this show needed antagonists…and before anyone says, “doesn’t every story have an antagonist?” No. If this story would have stayed focused on Carole and Tuesday’s journey through the music industry, it would have been perfectly fine. However, since this show went the “political drama” route in the second half, all I could think was “what the hell am I watching?”
The one thing I will disagree with you on though is the arguments about Angela’s story. I personally thought her arc was EXTREMELY well-written, especially when you consider the life trajectory of child stars as they grow older. Was it depressing? Sure, but it did have a solid payoff in the end.
As someone who loves some of Watanabe’s past works, this one me sort of scratching my head when it was over…because I wanted to love it, but there was a lot of bullshit that happened in the second half that kept me from rating it super high. I think I ultimately rated it an 8/10 on MAL.
If I could relate it to something, I’d say it’s more like a gymnastics meet where a gymnast puts together a phenomenal performance in all of their events, but then has an absolute dog shit vault and a really bad balance beams before bouncing back with a perfect floor performance to end the meet. There are a lot of things to remember from it, but due to some faults, it kept it from being a gold medal winning performance.
Oh, and before anyone says the politics plays a key role in the final song, I get that. However, the lead up to it was extremely flawed and the antagonists that I mentioned in my original comment were completely shoehorned in out of nowhere, so when they got their comeuppance, I was just like, “that’s great and all, but I think it would have been a lot more interesting if Tuesday’s mom was the actual antagonist all along.” Or at the very least, if they were going to have her mom have a redemption arc, have it be a lot more substantial. It just felt so shallow and tacked-on. It would have been nice to, oh, idk, have Tuesday and her mom actually have a face-to-face interaction at some point. I mean shit, how the hell does Carole’s dad show up for one episode and he gets more character development than Tuesday’s mom, who is prominent figure throughout the show? Frigging how?!
I’m sure someone will probably ask why I’m focusing on the negatives…it’s because this shit was the difference between C&T from being a great show to a masterpiece like Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo. It’s so damn close, but this stuff just wasn’t forgivable, nor was it something I could overlook.
Im late to this video, but I actually do agree with your critique. Tho, I can understand some peoples approach to your critique in this comment section, rightfully so, since a lot of the direction of the second half with the whole Angela arc was pretty implied at from the start of act 1. Also, I dont necessarily believe that C&T was trying to go for an AI vs. Realism approach, more so the struggles that musicians face in the industry. (You can say that Angela and C&T do contrast eachother tho, with Carole and Tuesday having a sense of their realistic touch and identities with their music, whilst Angela is going on a downwards spiral, with only having known to work for her mom, and let AI produce for her. But it definitely was not an ordeal of Realism vs. AI, at least not inherently) Despite that, I do agree with your critique. Its not necessarily the direction and path that Carole and Tuesday decided to go with, I did appreciate the realism in some of the arcs, like the Angela arc, etc; its moreso how Carole and Tuesday made these arcs feel. (also just a crap ton of subplots getting shoved in within such a short span) Like you said, I definitely did feel like I was watching a soap opera at times, and there were some parts that just didnt feel nuanced enough. Like the whole ordeal of Valerie quitting the presidential race, without having seen much of a preface of what she truly felt before about her political position (apart from Tuesdays and Spencers perspective, "we believe our mother wouldnt truly do this" something along those lines). I feel like Valeries political arc was just shortened because of Carole and Tuesday hosting "Mother" at the immigration hall; still, Valeries arc felt weak lmao.
Also, I feel like Carole and Tuesdays music didnt go too hard in the second half, I noticed they ditched their instruments during some parts, and the backing tracks that accompanied them didnt feel as sensual as it did with their instruments.
one last thing, I did sort of like the interpretative ending of C&T, but i think I wouldve liked it better if things werent so open ended from act 2. I feel like with some character intros, youre just left to wonder what happened to them, even if they arent necessarily important to the plot. Like what tf happens with Ezekiel, or Caroles dad? What happens to any of the immigrants now that Valeries resigned? I feel like these open ended questions could only be best answered if we had another season, the anime just left it at a complete conclusion (rather than the need to answer these questions at all) or if the mangas continue on with these questions. (I havent actually checked out the manga, so I wouldnt know what the content of it is)
This is a very fair critique. I appreciate how you discuss redeeming qualities of the show while also pointing out places where the writing, themes, and foreshadowing start to fall apart. I’m kind of surprised so few people are discussing the weaknesses of C&T because this is getting much more praise than I would have expected. Some of the plot points came off as downright comical to me because of how out of left field they were (e.g., Angela’s mom dying, Tuesday getting kidnapped, political bombings, etc.).
Carole and Tuesday was a masterpiece and I'd never seen anyone say otherwise until now
I would argue that the story line of this anime was telegraphed quite openly by its beginning. After all, would you expect a performance called "The Miraculous Seven Minutes" to just some song? To earn that sort of tag, it's going to have to have some far greater impact. And it does. It is a moment when artists join together to speak against a rising tide of darkness. It is also the moment when two formerly famous stars return to the spotlight. It is also the moment when a singer finds the courage to acknowledge her own desire to express herself. And to get all that, you need all the aspects of this story that the reviewer seems to hate. I think it a good story, and the closing caps it, challenging the veiwer to both carry the story forward in their mind, and perhaps to follow their own creative impulses.
Just watched Carole & Tuesday on youtube and saw your video with 'Fails' on the headline and just came here to say STFU and Carole & Tuesday is da best I watched on Netflix. About 3 times already watched all episodes straight just to enjoy this beautiful story. I strongly recommend watching this to everybody who already hasn't seen it! Really loved it!
I’ve actually never noticed it was on Netflix that’s a fun fact
idk why everyones getting mad at you for sharing your opinion goodbye, we live in a society ig
i always felt they couldve expanded on cybelle especially with all the amounts of reasons why she was so obsessed with tuesday (i.e. calling tuesday her only sollace)
You seem like the kind of guy that wouldn't like Hunter X Hunter. I could see you saying: What point did York New City, Greed Island, and The chimera Ant arc serve. They could have left those out and just had Gon meet his Father. Also the tone of the first episodes is completely different from the tone as the story progresses... But Hunter X Hunter is great and Carole and Tuesday is too. Not everything has to service the end goal, part of the fun is seeing the characters we love in interesting situations. Even if it doesn't always directly relate to the end goal
I don't think Carole and Tuesday went wrong its a wholesome anime and has the best ending
I just wanted to leave a comment to say that I agree with you regarding the tonal shift and overall downgrade in quality of the show. Just like you, I loved the first few episodes and thought that the show could eventually become one of my favorites. However, starting from the music contest arc, seeing the other participants were basically caricatures and the weird, out of place stalker thing happening, I felt very dissapointed about it all. I stopped watching in the middle of episode 13.
Personally I don't agree with much of your points, I do feel like the mother should have gotten a little arc of her realising what's shes doing to her daughter after bringing her home and then continue the plot as it is
The stalker plot I mainly don't agree with, I do think we should have gotten a little info about cyblle (I know I spelt it wrong but I can't exit out of this or it deletes my comment) but the overall thing they went with was good.
In real life there are people who are literally one note people and because of her short life I don't think she needed too much development, she isn't right in the head and I don't exactly see any possible way of understanding how she got into that mentality, fans are fucking crazy and to be honest she was mild compared to people in real life.
What I think they should have done is have Tuesday go to the police station to visit her, not because she's guilty but because she knows that if she doesn't get an answer to why she did it she'll live in fear for when they do get well known and how to spot warning signs
Yeah man...
I see your points and I sorta agree with them, but I fell into blind-love with this show and I just can't say that the show wasn't that great. It was totally great for me. Sure, there were many things I'd like to see more and many things that I'd like to see less, but in an overall I'd give it a full 5 stars anyway.
Long story short: ALL the issues could have been solved if they predicted a longer run time/episode count to develop the characters/storylines more.
I'd have liked it if they made separate arcs instead of cramming overlapping arcs into each episode together. Like in Ertegun's episode where they alternated with Kyle's crap. Or how they inserted Valerie's storyline wherever they pleased, like in the middle of Desmond's last song of the episode. A lot of it was an organization error to me, even if I did overall love and enjoy the show, I always felt like something was missing.
Like Tuesdays mom was gonna catch up with her I don't think that was out of left field she was a run away?
I dont think it was supposed to be a comedy.
Cybelle didn't need a redemption she was crazy and stuff like that happens.
Angela is exactly the kind of stuff that happens to chikd stars. I found it pretty realistic tbh. And the songs were so good I was really surprised.
Idk I think you just got disappointed bcuz you assumed what it was gonna be and when that wasn't the story you got you were bummed 🤷🏼♀️
🧡🦇
The first half of season 1 was great, everything after that was still ok but it had so much more potential.
thats the beauty of the movie. things just doesnt go the way you want it to be.
Ok I think your problem is that you want a cliché story. That's not what this anime is. My pet peeve about any story is that you know the ending before you even begun watching the thing. Take any chick flick or sports drama. You know how it ends before it begins. That's what you wanted, and that's why you didn't like this show. You merely came up with some verbose excuses for wanting something derivative, and formulaic. It's actually quite annoying to hear when people like you complain about things being unoriginal, then when something is released that is actually original, you complain when it doesn't follow a predictable formula.
I loved that this anime subverted expectations. I had all of the same expectations you did, but unlike you, I loved that they went in a different direction and didn't give into tired and predictable tropes. Also I take offense to you deriding them touching on the mistreatment of Black people in America in favor a predictable story. It really does your critique no favors when you cow tow to passive racism and a desire to not deal with real world atrocities because you want to make believe they don't exist. Shame on you.
Im still on episode 22. At first i thought tueaday didnt actually knew how to play the guitar, but i was so wrong
Pretty late, but I mostly agree with the second half, but I feel like the direction was great, however, they were working with bad writing as many things in the second half worked even though the overall story lost track of itself. It really felt like they tried to see how much subplots they can fit in 8 episodes.
The second half added subplots not needed to be added (AND rushed at that) such as: Tuseday's crush (surprised you didn't talk more about this as it felt so unnatural, and to be honest if they potrayed him as "bad for leading her on" I might've not completed it), *almost* all the political "messages" (I mostly found it's lack of subtly and a gray area to be jarring, but at least we got an, in my opinion, great character from it), Angella and Toas' origins, the black knight, among more that I probably can't remember at the moment.
For what I personally liked, lets start with the most controversial: Angella's fall. I really liked this only because it was BOTH unpredictable and made sense. While I don't like HOW Tao and Angella's mother left her, to me it left a reasonable reason on why she saw drugs as her way out (but that doesn't make it okay kids). To me it showed how easy it is for a child/teen star to go down the wrong path and ruin their career.
Moving on from that other various "arcs" I liked in "part 2" was Ezikial (probably spelled that wrong), Carole's dad and Tuesday's stalker (specifically, as I felt like Cybil was handled comparatively MUCH better, especially since it was Tuesday's own naivete and lack of assertiveness which escalated it). That's all I can address off the top of my head though, and I'm by *no* means a professional critic/writer as a disclaimer.
For me this anime is a masterpiece
I only watched the first part of the show and probably won't watch the second at this point, but personally I thought the first half of part 1 was great. I was super into seeing them make their way in the music industry and what kind of drama that would bring, along with Tuesday's family and Carole's past. Then the talent show section came along and I didn't one bit of it. My two biggest problems with it are
1. The characters introduced for it were not at all compelling and not very impressive musically. To go on top of that the sound mixing for the songs was pretty bad as well, with the music drowning out the vocals at times.
2. The esthetic of the show until that point was really cool and one of my favorite aspects, then it was pushed aside to spend like 5 episodes in an auditorium and a dressing room with performances that were overdone.
I know a lot of people like this show, and there's nothing wrong with that, but to me it was a huge let down from a show I thought I'd really enjoy.
@C Cherie I might get around to it eventually. I was just very put off by the whole talent show arc. If the music can get back to the level of the op and the first couple songs it would be worth the watch
This review fails to hit the right notes. Psycho-stalker fans exist. I don't get what you were tryina' do.
Seeing Carole look like me who’s black with dreads had me feeling represented and I love it
I can understand why you dislike the 2nd half,no problem with that
Personally,i enjoy it as a whole because of the realism
I like that its not all rainbows and sparkles, there's real issues that happen like crazy fans, addictions or something unrelated to politics suddenly become a problem
Ofc can't forget, that all the songs were great, just amazing
This show isn't even my favorite but it seems like you merely read a plot summary on the first part of the show instead of actually watching it.
- Cybelle is not supposed to, I quote, "have a redeeming quality". She's a psycho like you said, why would she? Some fans are actually psychotic like Cybelle like that in the music industry.
- How is the kidnapping arc totally out of left field? Carole's mom has been clearly trying to find her since episode 1 and finds Carole on TV due to the competition. Obviously
- Tuesday wasn't just a bystander when Cybelle was crossing the line, she was clearly worried about her but largely wanted Carole to resolve things by herself to learn.
This show wasn't perfect but it's like you only were watching for what YOU wanted to see.
(Edit: Spelling errors. Sorry for any that are left, English isn't my first language.)
When I finished Carole and Tuesday I was feeling really conflicted but I couldn't put it into words. I think you summed up a lot of it.
At the beginning of the show I felt like I was picking up the themes: AI vs. Human music, rivalry with Angela in the music industry and the conflict between Tuesday and her mother's expectations. Suddenly, all of it was completely forgotten and the themes made a 180° for the second season and I felt... really lost in between it all.
It was all suddenly about drugs, pression in the industry, racism and immigrants and politics. Of course, these are all awesome to make a take on in a show, but it all came so out of nowhere. That's the complain. It was so so dark all of a sudden...
Appart from that, I was very immersed. The music was simply... incredible. "Mother" was so astonishing. I had no words when it ended. All the characters were very likeable even if underdeveloped as you said.
Overall I'll remember this show fondly (even if it wasn't handled the best way). Thank you for the video! It really helped hearing your opinion about it.
This anime was brilliant! It made me wanna dream again. The soundtrack was fantastic too
Nothing went wrong, I just gave this a 10 out of 10.
I actually really liked dahlias depiction in the series because while at 1st she's set up to be the big bad of the show she not only doesn't end up being so but ends feeling incredibly human. Was she an abusive mother? Absolutely but she's also a remorseful 1 at that if she was not a remorseful mother Angela would not have shed a tear. Dahlia is a very complex she's hardly nice but not exactly evil either with even dahlia herself calling out cybelles behavior as a terrible action. She's done alot of terrible things over the course of the series but also isn't written in a way to suggest we hate her. Infact the type of character dahlia gives to me is a character like bojack someone who is deeply flawed but still beneath the rough exterior is a real human under there. Dahlia may come across like she doesn't care about Angela at all but it's clear multiple times in the series that beneath it all even if she doesn't have the most positive traits the 1 trait she always had was the love for her daughter which became even clearer towards the end. Dahlia is my favorite due to her complex characterization she's at 1st seen as the villain but then later down the line you warm up to her and see why she is the way she is. If you disagree ill completely understand but that's how I interpreted dahlias character
I honestly really like the show. The ending for season two was very sweet. It makes me sad that they won’t do a third season but oh well. I really enjoyed the friendship between Tuesday and Carol
This was an amazing heartfelt anime. Didn’t know I could get so enveloped into an anime about music. It has its moments that you brought up but overall I can’t get on board with your critique.
personally for me, i love the music in the 2nd half more than the first. all of the songs from the second half are really good. 1st half's music is still really good tho. give you the world, message in the wind, lay it all on me, the tower & mother are probably my favorite songs from the whole series.
i agree with you a lot with the plot of the series. the plot is such a mess lmao. the series is like a music video but it also has a plot. i really loved flora's arc in the 2nd half because i'm a whitney houston fan and i'm 95% sure that flora was a reference to her in a way. favorite episode of the whole series will probably either be the finale or flora's episode
now let's get to the vocal collections. they somehow ruined some of the best songs from the 1st half, i don't even know how that was possible lmao. 1st song they ruined, round & laundry. they added this loud beat in the song which is annoying at times but i somehow got kinda used to it. 2nd song they ruined, someday i'll find my way home. this was my favorite song from the 1st half and now probably my 10th favorite because they messed up bad, they added this clicking noise to it that is not in sync with the beat and it's so annoying to listen to, they also added a crowd at the end and it blocks out carole & tuesday's voice. 3rd song they ruined, galactic mermaid. the song that got me to watch the series ngl. they pitched up the bass a bit higher and it sounds odd. they also got rid of the snaps. vocal collection vol.2 on the other hand is MUCH better than vol.1 imo. they didn't ruin any of the songs but they added some unnecessary songs like making 2 versions of after the fire and the first one shouldn't have been in the vocal collection. it has the exact same instrumentation, weird mixing and they got rid of crystal. it made listening to the vocal collection repetitive. army of two street scene also didn't need to exist but i'm fine with it. the other songs not mentioned are really good tho in both vocal collections.
i wrote a long ass comment oml
I would agree with the plot getting a little wonky especially during part 2. However, I think thats what makes it entertaining and a good story overall. There was an episode in which one of the characters say, "Music can influence politics" or something like that. This show seems like an aligory (but not in a funny way because aligories are supposed to be funny/dark humor about history) and I feel like he was doing so especially during these times. I liked how he had these themes of acting getting together but a LOT of people hate it.... Idk the music sounds fine to me. I dont think you can ruin a song? I mean, you could just say that you disliked it because of those reasons you said before, but it REALLY doesnt ruin the songs in Part 1
Actually, I was right about the allegory part and it doesnt bave to be funny but its usually told in like jokes lol I feel like the creator definitely wanted to show a message about how it is right now in the music industry and music in general.
Wow, I'm late responding to this haha. I definitely agree with you that the music in the second half was better (though both parts were good tbh). Nice picks for favorite songs!
I actually hadn't noticed a lot of your qualms with the vocal collections, but I'm gonna have to go back and look for those now. Though I did notice the crowd sounds in the Army of Two street scene which felt unnecessary and just make me not want to listen to it - they distract from the actual song quite a bit.
Glad you liked the video though, and thanks for the in depth comment!
I lost it at the start but the show is mostly about artist and there struggles
The best stories aren't driven by a political agenda. I like anime because they don't give a damn for politics especially current American ones mixed in. Valarie represents red, looks like the female version of the current president down to the direction of her hair comb and supported, for the most part, the deportation of immigrants such as the SPANISH speaking friend of Carol. The ending was destroyed for me because C&T took the back seat to 1ep characters that had so little development i didn't give a damn about. Like wtf man! this anime should have ended at 12 eps.
Yeah, while there have been examples of anime mixing well with political themes and messages (Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Code Geass, Attack on Titan, Ghost in the Shell, etc), Carole & Tuesday is not one of them. All of those shows have a darker tone and it's established earlier on, whereas C&T abruptly goes from the lighthearted tone to political drama and it's not executed well whatsoever. I really wish that the second half and the ending reflected the first half more. Thanks for the comment and for watching the video!
@@JDefenseAnime It may be my own bias as an American citizen seeing American crap mixed in to anime lol. I wouldn't be surprised if this reason dosnt apply to watchers outside the US .
Trump didn't invent the immigrant controversy
@@spapolaris6479 if only it stopped just there in the show lol, but then it specified a particular race thats always sparking debate in that subject matter.
If it wasn’t for the political undertones of the whole show, the “7 minute miracle” wouldn’t have even happened. It would have just been a show about two young girls trying to make it big in the music world. And that’s not as interesting.
That is your opinion. For me I love the show. 🙄😪
I loved Carole and Tuesday it had so good bangers
It definitely wasn't perfect but the ending was so fucking nut worthy I can't help but to love it
I agree with you on the fact the two parts of the show are very different and probably too much different, but I think the 2nd part is better. The first one was good but remained simple.
I got lost with your criticism and paused the video from a headache. This anime is good and remains one of my top 5
I absolutely loved this series, 1 of my favorites. My favorite song is probably mother, followed by loneliest girl, both amazingly beautiful songs
The last episode on season 2. Was the most beautiful song i have ever heard it made me cry because it was so beautiful i just can't Express how amazing it was all i know is that it is a masterpiece for me
My favourite song was "Mother"
It's an okay show but it's not a masterpiece. It doesn't say anything new nor does it present it in an innovative, impactful way like Perfect Blue.
I will admit I stopped watching at episode 9 for some of the reasons you outlined.
I understand that some people like storytelling to mimic the randomness of life. I prefer more of the hero's journey. Either way. I would have tolerated the randomness better like when they failed in their first concert. That felt real. I despised the American Idol set up but was relieved the lady judge gave them an accurate critique. The animation and music by then wasn't as good either.
I actually enjoyed Angela's struggle against her mother the most. It felt real. It was exposed in great bits. I was looking forward to the AI vs. Human songwriting battle that I guess from what you said, never came.
I appreciate you posting this video. Thank you.
Part 2 of the show shouldve been it's own 24 episode season. I was fine with the themes and ideas they were trying to make, but it felt like they were trying to do too much for 12 episodes.
I want them to make another season for THIS reason... I want to know caroles present because that was forgotten about, what about the heartbreak with Tuesday?
Does Carole see her dad? What happens after the election? Wtf is the deal with Angela being made in like a lab... I mean these are big things that just kinda got thrown to the side...or Skips relationship with crystal like why did he have a song devoted to her yet we don’t know their story much!?! What about cybelle she was the only one not shown in jail... I find these things unsettling
In my personal opinion, the story is good but the end is anti climatic. From the first I enjoyes the suspense for 7 minute miracle but it dissapointed me so much that I dont come back for it.
Can't agree with you, of course the seven minute miracle is going to be a song, it's the fucking premise of the show
I totally agree. They showed it every episode as this life changing performance but it just kinda fell flat for me.
It all made sense though, the music industry isn't all slice of life and innocent.
I feel that the reason the anime went this way, is to relate this anime more to the hardships of real life.. though very left field but if you think of an anime such as gakkougarashi.. the happy aura seems to melt away... and Dahlia's death is the part that pisses me off.. since there was no redemption arc in my opinion.. the last few episodes did upset me.. but I overall really liked this anime.. honestly we had a lot of similar opinions on this, I hate when things get political
I feel the same ....it had great ideas but failed to execute them well
That's a good way to TL;DR it, and I completely agree. I think if the second half had continued in the vein of the first half, it would've truly been amazing. But then again, if the second half didn't turn into politics and drama, we wouldn't have gotten Mother and After The Fire... Either way, thanks for checking out the video!
Bro the politics in the second half destroyed this show. Like you say, they added so many characters in the second half it feels like they're tripping over one another trying to get adequate screen time for each, rendering the main characters into almost side characters.
Which is a crying shame. It had such a powerful first season and decently good season two... at least the first half of season two.
I have to disagree about the second half. It may not be as good as the first one, but that doesn’t mean it was bad.
The entire purpose of the second half was to show the parallel with the downfall of Angela: (a celebrity with tons of fans working under the decisions of her mother) and the rise of Carole and Tuesday who started as a small broke duet, to become an inspiration for many people and celebrities and are surrounded by good friends instead of fans.
The second half really got to me because it shows the dark side of being a celebrity, and on the other hand it shows that simple things can make you happier.
All of that leads to say that Gus was right not to sign the contract because he didn’t want Carole and Tuesday to end up like Angela or Flora.
Complain about the Mars brightest act was that it wasn't predictable?
You severely did not understand the purpose of this show.
Justice for Roddy (that was his name, right? ;-;)
No, but I really liked all the show. It had some flaws like lack of side character's development and some confusing stuff, but overall it was great. It really shows several sides of the music industry, life and music itself, either subtle or directly. Wait, this comment will continue
In your mind bro
Wow this guy got completely ripped apart in the comments
Good anime and awesome soundtrack but you’re right; shoving a political agenda just for the hell of it was irritating
???? Then how the hell is Tuesday gonna finish her story arc?
i just finished watching the second half i really hope there will be more of this show later. like i want to know will tuesday an her mom make up ? will carol an tuesday visit earth? will angela an the other dude her 'brother' will they see each other again? will Roddy ask tuesday out ? XD man so many what happens next questions
i agree that the characters and music were the strength of the show, and i found that any plot points like the cybele arc and political ones sort of pushed the characters away from eachother which made it hard for me to watch
That's the point though, it intentionally pushed eachother away because all of their past actions had caught up to them
😅 Every thing went to hell when it goes political
It's sad when your contents has more dislikes than likes when you are technically correct
I feel like where always seeing the world threw the characters eyes. So in part one before fame the world around them is every day slice of life having there jam sessions trying to make it big. But it changes in part two once they make it big. The world becomes so much bigger and both Carole and Tuesday and they start to see things as so much bigger than themselves.
And as for Angela it’s the opposite her world that she thought was so big has become just her and she dosent know what to do it’s a interesting turn.
Just came to dislike and read some of the comments, because I already knew hahahaha
I swear the anime betrayle at the end 😭
honestly the whole cybell argument doesn't make sense. Tuesday being meak and not fighting for herself was part of her character development. And consdering this show is meant to be raw, realistic, and not sunshine and rainbows, it makes sense that cybell wouldn't respond properly. Ontop of thatt, Cybell having no redeeming qualities was the point, Shes a horrible person.
Tuesday getting kidnapped and them being disqualified also makes sense for the show. The characters in this show are not meant to always win every battle, and thats been evident from the start, if a character only ever wins then how are they supposed to grow and evolve as a person?
Angela as a character was a rival, but every now and then when we had episodes focusing on her, it was hinted that things aren't going to go right for her either, not to mention she can't just be "carole and tuesdays" rival, her character has more potential and it was used.
The second half of Carole and Tuesday was all ABOUT the human touch and its negative effects (politics), Carole and Tuesday was never a happy go lucky show, it was about two girls fighting against not only discrimination but also the industry and human beings themselves
The political stance of the show was meant to reflect that of the real world at the time, a damn battle field. Critiquing a show on its depictions of politics especially when the show was originally about politics doesn't really make sense. The math isn't mathing.
This show in general is raw, its not puppies and kittens.
Bro must of the stuff your say about the first season is rubbish. honestly the first season is really good and 90% of the second one was good. The ending was quit quick because they had no time and money to animate everything. But that doesn’t mean it was a bad review as I said before the ending of season two was really quickly but first deserve everything you said about the first season.
I feel like your just hating to hate on it
the polotic's completely distracted
Episode 13-16 were to filler like but I like this anime I'm happy I wanted a year to see it
I'm. Not sure why they did part 2 like the way they did
Dude I just finished this show and I had a similar reaction with the plot. It started going a bit crazy towards the end.
I think what they should have done is make Cybele have a redemption arc and watching Tuesday grow because of this.
As much as I disliked Cybelle, this could have been an interesting plot development if she genuinely realized the error of her ways and changed
@@JDefenseAnime I don't agree with that, it would be insanely stupid if she had a redemption plot after LITERALLY CRIPPLING TUESDAYS ARM so she couldn't preform.
It is idiot to think "yeah I know you potentially had a chance to end my existence but nahhh let's be friends"
Angela was the zuko of the series and it works
My opinion: oh yeah seems like ist would Happen like that in Real Life !!!!! Real Life shit 😅 ... so simply unique how they show such a story with so much emotions in that less episodes. I was amazed by this animation and emotionally touched.
i felt like rewatching samurai champloo and remembered the same guy made cowboy bebop so i decided to check out what he’s been up to. this is some garbage. i sincerely regret it.
