I live in Finland and I remember when I turned 18, we had some friends over for drinks. Someone called the police because of the music. They rang the doorbell, told me why they were there and asked if they could come in and take a look around. I was in the middle of a card game with my friend, so I sat back down on the floor, my boyfriend was on the computer and 3 guys were sitting on the sofa. The police were like "Wow, this might be the chillest 18th birthday party we've been called to!" Then he took his flashlight out and pointed it at my cat and was like "Is that a real cat!?" I was confused and said "yes... why?" He was amazed because the cat was sitting so still and just staring at him accross the room! We all laughed about it, and the police were like "yeah, all seems well, just keep the music down and everything's good. Happy birthday!"

@@KukkakukkoThey need a search permit but they can get it fast. It does not have to be a judge if there is a reason why they have to do a search fast and outside office hours. It just have to be someone quite high in the command chain to give permit.

Just a guess, but it's probably a 2 way street as trust usually is. I'm assuming the Finnish police can likely trust the Finnish civilian more than US police can trust the average American. Plus there are disadvantages having to police a larger, much more heavily armed society. The Scandinavians however seem to much more community oriented, or concerned with the good of the many at least, than the average Americans regrettably. We just come off as more selfish.
I'm saying this as someone who worked in EMS in the US for a time. I got to see the some of the good and the bad, but I came to realize the police force we have in the US is as much a product of their environment, socially and politically as most of the rest of the population.
Unfortunately for us, the crime rate per capita for things like murders and rapes in the US is almost twice Finnland's. American police have to police a more heavily armed and more violent people on average, so we end up with what we have.
In Finland we have a lot of guns in homes. Armed society is not problem if its done well. You cant just buy a gun in Finland. There must be always provably(?) reason for gun. Reason from hobby, hunting licence etc, etc. Some proof of need, minimum. Same goes with carrying the gun, you cant carry a weapon just because you have license for it.
And in our language we have saying "police is friend". I think that's says a lot? They look like swat-team members with their practical haulers and they act like that if you dont co-operate. If you comply, you are just client of their job.

I honestly think a majority (not all) of the issues that happens with US police happen because people don't co-operate with US police, for whatever their various reasons are, and things ecilate from there. Such as usually just not complying with police instructions.
Then how do you explain shootings of unarmed individuals who were clearly complying? I'm afraid you might have a little bit of a clouded view on how bad the police are as an institution in America. You know what happens to cops who commit a CRIME on duty? They get paid leave and a transfer to a different state a few months after. That is the core problem, bad cops protecting other bad cops. @@jjohnston9802 Yeah, with the US having such harsh punishments compared to most of Europe, I don't get how people can be so fucking stupid as to not obey simple commands by the police. If they mistreat you, sue them later. They have body cams nowadays. But instead of getting rich people want to act tough and ruin their whole lives. It's just beyond my comprehension.

In the USA, law enforcement is allowed to, and often does, lie to the public. It sounds like police in Finland are not allowed to do that.

The USA police in't allowed to lie to the public. They are allowed to lie in an interrogation of suspect to coheres a confession. If you lie to the public you are very much open to lawsuits.
The salient point is to understand the police are not your friend nor your enemy. I've always had cordial and respectful interactions with law enforcement and find the majority of them to be ethical and decent. That being said; if you're dealing with a serious issue, it's probably best to obtain legal counsel; i.e., an attorney. @@kotkaconforza

@@brandonjohnson1339 But that's a special circumstance. Undercover officer is allowed to lie about his identity, to gather evidence for prosecution. But this is when they are working on a case or a task force that has been granted that avenue. That doesn't mean that a cop n civilian clothes can go around lying to people. Neither an the undercover cop lie about things that could mislead you to act on a crime... or they can but then the case just crumbles before it even makes it to court, so it would a waste of their time.

I think the big reason for happiness overall is that GENERALLY people do follow the law, most policing is for drunk people, nothing too serious.
3:25 to be fair, this guy is probably an exception, most police in Scandinavia (norway makes most money), but Sweden for example, regular police officers have salaries between €2200 - 4500 around there, depending on rank and responsabilities.
Ofc there are people that make €5000+, but its not "the norm" id say. also its important to remember, we dont pay for healthcare really, hospital visits are like €20-30, but if for example you make +5k per month, taxes will take a good 40-50% of that income.
also average cost of living is pretty high in general in Scandinavia, but yea.
yeah the hospital visits for non life threatening things are 20-30€ + if you need ride to the hospital in situations where its not life threatening it has usually been 10€ or more
It's also a country with a small and sustainable population, thanks to the cold climate.

@@jarskil8862 to be fair, the "racism" in the Finnish newspapers you mention, is often just criticism based on the unregulated immigration across Scandinavia, i live in Sweden, and it has completely ruined our country, its horrible.
and before you say "oh how do you know immigrants are at fault?" well, statistics. they dont lie, and they show almost +90% of all violent crime, is done by people with immigration background.....
Sweden used to be a very happy and safe country (in general), but now, Stockholm has a "murder/per capita" that is 50x TIMES HIGHER than London (and from my understanding, London has many stabbings, and almost every night)
the problem is, because there are SOO many immigrants that are swedish citizens now, and they vote for politicians, as soon as a politician even mentions any critique towards the immigration crisis, half the fucking population goes "racist, ill vote other party!", its so fkn braindead its unbelievable.
I truly hope we can fix this mess, and that politicians stopped being so fkn scared, and dealt with the criminals.
(for the record, i am all for immigration, the legal and controlled way. immigration helps countries flourish, blossom and thrive, also develop)
the problem here in Sweden is that we have almost COMPLETELY UNREGULATED immigration, and that shit needs to stop. people dont even have to apply to enter Sweden, all they have to do is say they come from war, whether its true or not, and that they dont have any documents, and the border just lets them through.

in my opinion, there needs to be an application process that spans over at least +3-6 months, then proper background checks, and also just dont allow anyone entering unless they have valid passport or other documents supporting who they are, and where they are from.
also, whenever immigrants that are relatively new to Sweden, commit violent crimes, like assault, rape, murder, etc. there needs to be WAYYYYYY more strict punishments.
because currently, gangs recruit kids as young as 11-12 years old, and whenever they order a 16 year old, to kill another person, commiting cold-blooded murder, this 16 year old can get maximum 4 years in prison, AND inside the prison, they often have access to ipads, internet etc, it is f*cking ridiculous....
then they come out of prison, barely aged many years, and they get a huge sum of money from the drug lord / or whoever controls the gang, their status within the gang goes up alot, and its like nothing happened. meanwhile the victim, the person they killed, they have lost a good +60-80 years of their life, and their whole family shattered, devestated, broken. meanwhile this "kid" moves on, with all of his money like it was just a regular work day.....

In most cases the finnish police talk and de-escalates the aggressive or dangerous situations, citizens are customers.
And the courts decide if they are innocent or guilty, not the police, if a person is arrested. They remain innocent until determined otherwise by a court of law.
Police uphold law and order and even teach people about their legal rights, it is the job of the police to serve us and defend our rights, not the other way around.

In the USA in the same year, the amount was 660,288. This means in Finland the amount of police officers (out of a rounded up 5,6 million population) is about 0.13% of the population. In the USA the same figure (out of rounded down 330 million population) is 0.2%.
Since the USA has more police officers per capita, your comparison means nothing. So wanna try again, what's the real reason crime rates are higher in the USA than Finland?

Life in Finland is incredibly expensive. Taxes are high, salaries are low compared to other European countries. Everything is taxed heavily. Including owned property like houses or fossil fuel powered cars. Alcohol, tobacco and food is heavily monoplised which removes significant competition and promotes cartel prices. Bigger cities are facing economic issues due to poor money management and gang activity is rising. Alcoholics and homeless people as well as scammers litter the streets of Helsinki. Police are inefficient in protecting citizens and our justice system usually protects criminals. Self defense is allowed but it is impossible to determine what amount of force is allowed so good luck with that. All men have to join the army or work for free for a year for the state.
Wokeness is slowly eliminating freedom of speech and removing Finnish culture which is then replaced with western woke thinking. On top of all of this is an ever growing national debt that only gets worse and worse every year and this of course leads to raising even higher taxes. The FInnish government want to save the world with money and resources that it does not have which leads to situations where the only solution is to engage in trade with questionable countries or indeed take out additional loans.
We are a realistic, hard working and traditional people that due to our culture would never think to speak up about the harsh reality of our country. Yes we are doing well all things considered but we already have families who have to decide between heating their home and feeding their children. This video is completely inaccurate and misleading. I was born in Finland and have lived here my whole life, I am 28 years old, I have seen the downward trend my entire life and bow my head in shame on behalf of our selfish political leaders who care more for Africa then they do about our own people.

@@hennakettunen8755 In my opinion a better country to live in right now all things considered would be Germany. Productivity is high, salaries are high, economy is booming, taxes are low, competition between companies is encouraged and people enjoy similar well fare state benefits that exist in Finland. I am unhappy with how our government solves problems and in general manages the country. I am hopeful that someday things may change but I am also a realist.
If we followed Germany's outstanding example of caring for its nation and citizens first, we might have a chance to become an economic powerhouse with well payed workers and fair trade industries. Right now Finland is overworked, underpaid and in rapid decline on most metrics. This is fact, this is not negativity. I personally deal in facts and truths, the truth is Finland is not the country it once was and the scary part is that most people are either clueless of that fact or simply stopped caring long ago.
