Wow! this video helped me a lot, especially with the clear cache step. I had around 21 gb worth of storage and when i cleared it, the lag completely went away

I think the big problem is that Adobe doesn't want to or has the power to not optimize After Effects. Even if people complained, it just would fall on deaf ears since Adobe and people know that there's no other alternative. I've read a person had 128 GB of ram, yet that still wasn't enough.

your video didn't help in my case, but i discovered my problem. don't know if someone will use it but i'll comment anyway. last week i was troubleshooting an error i had with AE and one person told to activate compatibility mode in the program shortcut to open as windows 7, i did that and it didn't work but i left that way. some time later i fixed the thing, then i noticed after effects was taking like 1/2 seconds to respond EACH click i did. it was bad. today, trying to fix it seeing your video, i remembered and deactivated compatibility mode. fixed instantly, i'm reliefed, AE is fast (kinda), all good. probably no one will find this useful (too specific) but that's it!
I am currently on after effects, the preview of my clip is horrible and the audio randomly skips around with the preview fine. It doesnt fix itself even when i replace the clip or interpret the footage. Please help, this is driving me crazy I have found 0 solutions

When I have that template project imported, not even being used, just imported, I make a new comp and a text layer. The text takes 10 seconds to register a key press. I remove the template and it's back to normal. What's processing?

Saddeningly none of these worked. It sucks since I'm trying to make multiple visuals for each little sound in a song, so a waveform wouldn't work well, and hearing by ear is impossible due to the lag. Are there no other last resort cases? Maybe my laptop simply is not good enough for After Effects? I have 8 Gigabytes of ram if it matters, alongside an "Intel Core i5-7300HQ" CPU, and a "Nvidia GTX 1050" GPU. I am using a laptop with 2 GPUs, but I have specifically assigned After Effects to use my more powerful Nvidia CPU. The other CPU is an "Intel HD Graphics 630" CPU.

Sorry, these are the only ways I know to fix the lag. Although the specs say 8GB, I have trouble with lag on my 16GB computer! So maybe it's a RAM issue.

I need help. Everything is good at all but as soon as I try to make a change, the whole thing stops like I push play, but nothing plays at all not even the audio. He only works when I log back out of the app and log back in but as soon as I try to make a change, it goes to a stop. Sometimes it would even play with just the audio and not the video running and sometimes it would just stop completely, and only be a black screen

It seems these solutions did not work for me at all. I'm using a far more superior spec PC compared to my old rig; 2080 ti, i9-9900K, with 16gb ram, and I have nothing, but playback problems with this, compared to when I used After Effects CS6. I tried throwing my video files on an SSD to see if it will help, but unfortuanately not. I have a couple of projects that I made in After Effects, but this problem prevents me from even trying to get back into them. Premiere Pro has been more accommodating to my PC, but it doesn't have the things I want compared to After Effects. Seriously at a loss, as my PC can run many programs at a more powerful setting.
I have a similar but different problem. I just put a 40 second long mp4 video in After Effects, and since then, it lasts three seconds or so to pause it when I click the spacebar. What can I do to avoid that problem?

The fact that your menus react quickly shows me the lag you have is minimal. My lag is so exreme in After Effects the menus don't always respond and clicks only happen after 5 seconds. Not sure if the wacom is making it worse, but its pretty horrific lag. A fresh install doensnt even fix it.

That is DEFINITELY enough RAM. I'm so sorry - I wish I knew more ways to fix it. Unfortunately the ones in the video are all I've got.

Your effect is causing the program to run slowly. I would take it off until the very end, then add it on and export.

8 GB of ram is most likely the problem. That's the bare minimum to run Adobe programs, and AE takes up a TON of ram!!

It still lags really bad for me, the green line is full and the audio is fine but the video is glitchy

It sounds like, if you've tried everything in the video, that your ram might not be high enough.
I TRIED this on my after effects and restarted my comptuer and closed all my applications! This did not work!!!

Fixed it. I have the most powerful Mac Pro (black cylinder) availabe before they discontinued it and AE was excruciating sluggish.

Do you have 8GB of ram? That is the bare minimum for AE, so unfortunately it'll always be slow with that much ram.
