Indeed he does hold up, specially after they gave him Shell Smash, which lowers your defenses in 1 and raises your attacks and speed in *2* in a single turn. Suddenly, this guy went from being the competitively worst Gen1 starter to being the best, to the point its Mega Evolution was banned to Ubers, the tier of Legendaries, in National Dex. Something that both Venusaur and Charizard have never accomplished. Way to go, tactical turtle, way to go
@@HannibalKantter He didn't hold up in Gen 8 without a mega, compared to Venusaur and Charizard though. Solar Power and Chlorophyll are just way better than Rain Dish sadly.

As much as I feel like the Squirtle run wasn't at full potential, I understand not doing repeat runs for every single mon. So I'll take Blastoise's performance here as redemption for the Squirtle line as a whole. Also, it'll be interesting when you eventually get to the middle forms of the starters and how they compare, both to each other and to their younger and older forms.
Honestly, he should still do it just for Squirtle. Not using the BBG is tremendous. I beat Bulbasaurs time first try and I was just messing around, not even doing the efficient order and at a lower level of 66.
Admittedly, it's still understandable for Blastoise to have a glowup performance: the line is supposed to be a Jack of all trades, and that's somewhat tricky to use as a Squirtle the whole game. But as a Blastoise the whole game, that means you are almost always guaranteed an even match in raw numbers with the enemy, so long as you aren't super underleveled
For real tho. I can't tell you how many times my Milotic in Emerald was "unstoppable" for the Battle Frontier with Surf, Ice Beam, Hydro Pump, and Recover. It wrecked through basically everything until a Vaporeon with Water Absorb showed up and I had nothing to deal with it so I had to rely on Ice Beam 😤

Your videos are a joy to watch and to have on in the background. I love how you explain your thought processes, you match the colors to the star of the run, and your consistently high standards for the runs. I stan the month of JRose.
I recall you doing Gengar with minimum battles and not using all your rare candies, so I think it still should have been ranked above Blastoise on account of that and with its lower finishing level. This run compared to the old Squirtle one really shows the power of the badge boost glitch though.
@@ShinyTillDawn True, but that only starts to throw off the comparisons if it’s a completely clean minimum battles run and you’re accidentally gaining levels you don’t need (which I believe has only happened with 2 Pokémon so far). If there’s any additional battles, the level is a good representation of the power level you need to grind to to finish the game. Time has a lot more issues as a measure since it penalizes a lot of things that may take an extra turn but have a 100% win rate (like a lot of status strategies). So it’s not a great measure of how good something is.
@@Kench154 I tend to view it in the reverse of what you said: If it’s about how easily you can get through the game, then speed is a reasonable factor. But if it’s just a comparison of “who’s the best at winning” (which is usually what we mean when we say a game character is the best), then level captures that a lot more directly. It’s why competitive play has level caps, but no penalties for the speed of battles beyond a generous time limit for choosing moves. One way to think about it: If a Pokémon has a consistent 10% higher win rate than average, we’d say it’s better than average. If a Pokémon ends battles 10% faster than average, we have no idea if it’s better than average or not. It could actually have a lower win rate, but matches end faster (even if the ending is a loss).
@@Kench154 I can understand that. It may be my own limitations, but I can’t imagine any battle gaming genre (fighting, strategy, RPG) where the “best” means something other than winning the most. I know you said you were gonna pump out some content for the rest of the year, did NOT expect blastoise and charizard so soon after venusaur, thanks big dog
Surf, Ice Beam, and Earthquake together provides such great coverage. Fourth move spot could be literally anything and Blastoise would still be a great pokemon.
Yeah I agree with Blastoise being really good. I did a solo run (no items in battle) with it on firered and while I didn't go for a speed run (I battled every trainer I could), I actually didn't lose a single battle throughout the entire game which is pretty crazy.
That's actually not that hard in FRLG. A lot of fully evolved Pokemon can do that because FRLG opens movepools up a lot, so it's only a few of them that lack stats or moves enough for it to be an issue.
Given that Blastoise was the go-to R/B speedrun Pokemon for a long time, it had damn well better be near the top. When you eventually get to Nidoking, it will also be up there.
I've just completed a run with Wartortle and it was very curious. Since it's a Pokémon that learns many powerful moves and because of its stats, it advanced very quickly until Misty. From there, it was necessary to level it up from time to time. However, the outcome was very similar to this one, finishing also at level 63. Even if it looks repetitive, it's surprising you can have a slightly different gameplay when you pick each one.
Absolutely wild to think that we've played this game for so many years, caught and evolved countless Pokémon, and you can stand there and say, that one, Squirtle was my first. brings a tear to my eye
Charmander was the first starter I picked, but I beat the game the first time picking Squirtle. I'm conflicted, but I've always felt a bigger attachment to Squirtle.
I haven't seen the video yet, but I wanted to say happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for your wonderful content. I always look forward to it and this one is even sweeter since Blastoise is my favorite starter.
When you inevitably reach the end of the Kanto dex, excluding the impossible ones, it could be super interesting to get a "what I learned" summation video. It's clear you've learned a lot about what makes these games tick.
The only impossible ones are guys like Magikarp, Caterpie, Metapod, who only know Normal moves. Not very many of those. Weedle is going to be the hardest possible one.
@@kalkuttadrop6371 Weedle is functionally impossible. He tried it on stream and needed insane luck (we're talking about 1 in 1 billion) to get past Lorelei's dewgong. Ditto I think can be done but will be the exact opposite of fun.
You can actually get to the pokemon league with weedle although with insane luck but Lorelei dewgong with infinite rest is a wall that you can't get past.
I'm loving the rankings now that they're really filling up. The end of your videos have that same feel as when Jeremy would call out the lap times of a new sports car on the Top Gear lap time leaderboard.
Blastoise is hands down the best, always knew it (At least in this game). You should totally do Ponyta again, you'll do much better then the last time. I'm not saying "do every pokemon again" I'm just thinking that Ponyta deserves a bit of justice. In my opionion you could get anywhere from 4:30 to 5:30 hours with it
I very much agree with this Raichu was on the team I used to defeat the E4 my very first time but other than thunderbolt I'm sure it's moveset was trash I want to see what it's really capable of on its own and in the right hands
It's gonna be the Pikachu run on steroids : passing Brock will be an absolute nightmare since Raichu doesn't have any move to damage Geodude and Onix (other than Struggle) but will absolutely steamroll the game afterwards.
I actually don't understand why there would be any argument for putting Blastoise second - it got higher time than Alakazam, higher level then Alakazam and, as you mentioned, you keep getting better with these runs, so later runs are kinda expected to go better than earlier ones. Am I missing something here? EDIT: Forgot to mention, that I loved the video ^^ JRose's month is awesome
I enjoyed the slightly different shade of blue! In general I appreciate the work you put into the color-swapping, it helps maintain visual interest through repeated runs of the same game.
Ya know, the only time I would consider even doing a redo would be when all 151 are done and even then, there is so many challenge runs from gen 2, to gen 3 to even more creative runs. If JRose makes it to like a 10 year anniversary after gen 1 is done, maybe we can consider it, but I agree with his point that redoing them now would be a nightmare.
I swear I been waiting on the runs with all 3 Gen 2 Kanto starters fully evolved and to get them back to back to back in the span of a couple of days is a very good thing!!!
Always been a Charizard fan but this makes me respect Blastoise. The run was similar to Vaporeon but with a better starting moveset and an attack stat it can make use of.
Same but it’s not the same playing field at all. Zard has to deal with Lorelei, Gyarados, and the champs Blastoise. Blastoise is weak to grass and electric. There are no electric moves in the elite four/champion and you can use ice on Saur and of course, Lance. Gen 1 heavily favors water
@@dannyt9744Pokemon in general heavily favors water 😂 Just about every water pokemon has Ice coverage and they usually outspeed or outbulk the Grass type. The only other thing that resists water is Dragon and that's also covered by Ice. Basically water's only real enemies are electric and other water pokemon with better coverage. Oh, and the Ice type that has Freeze-Dry.
It’s the gift that keeps on giving. It’s giving thanks. Tis the season of comfort and joy. And that season is in Sagittarius via Jrose uploads. Love you Jrose and thank you for doing all of this!
I've got no problem with blastoise being rated above gengar. Especially because gengar was one of the first runs. I'm sure gengar could shave a few minutes off its time if you tried again.
You are the only Pokémon creator that’s stood the test of time for me and you have me coming back. I think it has to be the not super corny voice most of the rest put on. Also there’s a reason speedrunners use him
I think it's important to also mention that, while squirtle probably would've done a bit better with the badge boost glitch in mind, the same would apply to bulbasaur as well, since it has growth and swords dance, as well as charmander having swords dance itself.
Is the colour scheme really indistinguishable from the default blue one? Either way it looks really good. Your colour game has been really strong for a while now.
I know this upload schedule probably isn’t the best for you as a creator but damn I have felt so lucky to see one of your vids pop up so much recently. Love your content, keep it up! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Damn, well even if it's not quite Top 2, Top 3 remains BALLER for Blastoise to reach and especially for NOT using Psychic moves! Good job, Blastoise! =) And also based on the end of the vid overall in addition to addressing a criticism to a much earlier vid...does that mean NIDOKING is next for the Red/Blue "Challenge Run" series? Again, based on what I'm hearing, I'd really like to know. Also AWESOME hearing all those remixes that MyNewSoundtrack did for you. Amazing to hear! X3
The blue that you used in this video is absolutely gorgeous! I absolutely love that color, and you got Blastoise's color down to a tee! You did a great run as well! Good going!😁✌🏾
Honestly, I think you got so much luck with this run that if anything Blastoise got through easier than it would have normally. Probably not enough to make a difference with Blastoise over Venasaur but enough to possibly make a difference between Blastoise and Gengar and others who were close in time and level.
Surprised at this one, really underestimated Blastoise's movepool. I think Gengar should be above it personally but the fact that it's even in the same league as it and Alakazam is impressive for a starter Pokemon.
I knew my boy blastoise would be the best of the fully evolved starters. Ice beam surf and earthquake is just too good coverage, plus a setup move to boost stats. Love the vids man keep up the good work!
i do like it when runs are optimized, but i also like seeing the runner think on the fly. you can always optimize later, you can never go back. keep on keepin on Jrose
I really hope that you'll do Nidoqueen as well as Nidoking, both to mirror their pre evolution facing off in the same video and to see how their starting movesets will affect the timings. I did a run with both on my own, using the exact same routing, and the result would probably surprise a lot of people.
You misunderstood me. I know that Jrose was talking about Nidoking, as in gen 1 speedruns he's by far the best; what I'm saying in my comment is that, since the two Nidoran were featured in the same video and directly compared, I hope Jrose will do the same for Nidoking and Nidoqueen to see if the result will be the same.
I super appreciate the high quality videos so quickly after another, but I hope you balance it out, or that they're at least easy to create. I'd totally understand a long break after these if neither was possible, though.
My favourite of the Kanto starters! And judging by the video length it'll do better than the other two :D Edit: Wow, I didn't expect it to go *that* well :O
Two things about this run: 1. The Blastoise was definitely overleveled. You can easily take down the champion ending in the mid/high 50s. 2. The movepool was very unoptimal. Blizzard has 90 accuracy so there's no reason not to use it whenever the moveset allows for it. Plus, too much reliance on badge boost glitch made the run slower.
Yooo so glad I could help with some songs!
I hope everyone enjoys the remixes 🎶🎵
They fit well. Good work and thank you.
Oh my God is that the guy from the Mega Man X video?

The only impossible ones are guys like Magikarp, Caterpie, Metapod, who only know Normal moves. Not very many of those.
Weedle is going to be the hardest possible one.
Ditto and Weedle are going to be impossible by his rules as well.
They require items to win...
Especially Weedle.
@@Kanbei11 Ditto has been completed by other runners (check out VanMan for an example)...and "the exact opposite of fun" is right on the money.
Hell yeah! Another great run! I'm enjoying this month so much already. Arguably the best part of the day is seeing the new upload in my feed!
I did a catch 'em all run for Blue/Red recently and I started with Blastoise because I figured it would have the best overall move coverage
Unpopular opinion: I miss the OG Jrose count impression… at the 8th gym all I could hear was “5… 5 surfs! Ah ha ha!” 😂
My expectations were high but Blastoise still surpassed them, outstanding run
I just wanna let you know we appreciate it bro 💯
Blastoise was originally the speedrun option for these games - but that's with items - so I was very interested to see how this run would turn out 😊
Also, starting with a squirtle vs. starting with a blastoise makes a difference.
In my opionion you could get anywhere from 4:30 to 5:30 hours with it
Ah Ponyta, where horn drill is a viable strat
@@Kanbei11 I don't think that's the way
Really should just redo Squirtle only, because it's just an injustice to not use the BBG when he did it with the other two
Love the blue color and the music has improved dramatically.
This is about what i expected with the starters, Blastoise always ftw
Blastoise letsgoooo! Hyped to see if it can beat the others
3rd overall!!! Dam lets go Blastoise!
I feel like you should do Raichu next since you did Pikachu with the starters.
I very much agree with this
Raichu was on the team I used to defeat the E4 my very first time but other than thunderbolt I'm sure it's moveset was trash I want to see what it's really capable of on its own and in the right hands
It's gonna be the Pikachu run on steroids : passing Brock will be an absolute nightmare since Raichu doesn't have any move to damage Geodude and Onix (other than Struggle) but will absolutely steamroll the game afterwards.
JRose is absolutely incredible. Thank you for all of these uploads!
For the level difference maybe Jrose didn't have to use all of his rare candy here.
it only lost twice throughout the whole run and both were due to user error, that's probably why
you forget something, gengar was also a challenge run where he intentionaly gimped his play, i think it was one of those minimal battles as well.
@@marcosdheleno if a Pokemon is extremely good, minimum battles isn't a gimp, it's the fastest route
He doesn't really have to redo any EXCEPT Squirtle. The other Pokémon's times wouldn't change much but Squirtle's changes drastically.
This is so awesome! Thanks for doing all the starters, I can't wait to see starmie next!
I swear I been waiting on the runs with all 3 Gen 2 Kanto starters fully evolved and to get them back to back to back in the span of a couple of days is a very good thing!!!
This was awesome! Makes me proud to have chosen Squirtle my first run through the game as a kid.
Dude these back to back videos are a treat!
as a life long blastoise guy, this was extremely gratifying to watch
Been lurking on your videos for a while. A month of videos is a massive undertaking, and it definitely got me to sub - thank you for the content!
I knew Blastoise would speed through the game lol, he's used in speedruns so it only makes sense
Banger video as always, loving all the content this month!
"Is Blastoise the Best Starter in Pokemon Red/Blue?"
Yes. 😎
I may be a little biased
Bulbachad > Squirchad > Charmancuck.
Chadstoise > Venuchad > Cuckizard.
Squirtle and bulbabros rise up.
Thanks for the the stream of videos recently man hope you’re doing well!
Is the colour scheme really indistinguishable from the default blue one? Either way it looks really good. Your colour game has been really strong for a while now.
what a run!! everything just went perfect for you. love that 🥳
Blastoise is simply too strong due to its good stats and titanic movepool. Awesome run.
Thank you for dropping these videos Jrose. They are always a treat! And as always, be sure to take good care of your health as well!
I'm so hype for the NidoKING run!! 😁
Glad someone stayed till the end of the video and mentioned the king 🤩hyped af too 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Happy thanksgiving Jrose! Thanks for devoting so much time to this marathon content creation. Much love from Boston
I know this upload schedule probably isn’t the best for you as a creator but damn I have felt so lucky to see one of your vids pop up so much recently. Love your content, keep it up! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Water typing, access to strong normal water ice and ground moves. Result honestly unsurprising
Damn, well even if it's not quite Top 2, Top 3 remains BALLER for Blastoise to reach and especially for NOT using Psychic moves! Good job, Blastoise! =)
And also based on the end of the vid overall in addition to addressing a criticism to a much earlier vid...does that mean NIDOKING is next for the Red/Blue "Challenge Run" series?
Thanks for all the videos! I've gotten countless hours of entertainment through your work!
RIP Charizard Stans
letsss gooo im really having a blast with these videos thanks for uploading
Surprised at this one, really underestimated Blastoise's movepool. I think Gengar should be above it personally but the fact that it's even in the same league as it and Alakazam is impressive for a starter Pokemon.
Yeah, I was surprised Blastoise was so high up.
I knew my boy blastoise would be the best of the fully evolved starters. Ice beam surf and earthquake is just too good coverage, plus a setup move to boost stats. Love the vids man keep up the good work!
Didn’t expect blastoise to take the bronze metal away from Gengar, congratulations turtleman
i do like it when runs are optimized, but i also like seeing the runner think on the fly.
you can always optimize later, you can never go back.
keep on keepin on Jrose
I really hope that you'll do Nidoqueen as well as Nidoking, both to mirror their pre evolution facing off in the same video and to see how their starting movesets will affect the timings.
I did a run with both on my own, using the exact same routing, and the result would probably surprise a lot of people.
Pretty sure that he is reffering to Nidoking at the end of the video but we'll see.
And judging by the video length it'll do better than the other two :D
Edit: Wow, I didn't expect it to go *that* well :O
I love these vids and I look forward to watching them after work everyday. I'm making sure I like all these videos! Keep up the good work!
Just watched the venosaur and charizard ones... talk about good timming.
Two things about this run:
