How Fast Can You Beat Pokemon Red/Blue with just a Magmar?

  • For the first time, I made a huge mistake during the run! Can I recover? Is the tier list ruined? What animal is Magmar actually supposed to be? All these questions.... won't be answered, but some will!

    Rules and Explanations
    Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
    Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

    Anecdote: magmar is one of the two pokemon that can exploit the confusion/counter glitch, where using counter on the same turn an opponent hurts itself will do double the self-inflicted damage. It's just the way counter works, but the only other pokemon that learns confuse ray & counter is gengar (haunter can't learn counter). Not a lot of applications for it tbh, but it does make magmar more viable on "no offensive moves" playthroughs, compared to the alternative, ninetales, who can learn confuse ray, but not counter

      The oddest thing about this "assurance" interaction is that it almost seems intentional. After all, gengar can't even be hit by normal or fighting types, which are the only types of attacks counter can actually counter in RBY. So despite being able to learn it, the only way Gengar can actually use it, is on a confused foe who hurts themselves

      Psychic(the move, not type) is only really overpowered due to the special drop. In runs relying on outspeeding and 1/2 shotting your foes this doesn't come into play too often. Also don't forget the lack of STAB which actually makes a big difference on high base power moves like Psychic.

    • @JustaGuy_Gaming
      @JustaGuy_Gaming Месяц назад +1

      @@Owlr4ider Yup early pokemon especially really boils down to two things. Are you faster than the enemy, and can you kill it in one or two turns. If your faster you can kill enemies before they have a chance to damage or status you. If you can kill things within two turns and are faster than them you effectively only get hit once.
      It's basically made nearly all other pokemon stats useless as defense, HP, etc rarely ever makes a difference. Even the highest defense pokemon still tends to die in 2 or 3 turns against super effective attacks. Mean while their offense is so bad they take forever to kill their enemies.

    The side-by-side comparison of runs made for a very interesting video. I was surprised how little difference Psychic made until I remembered that not very effective Fire Blast (120/2 then 1.5x for STAB = 90) has the same base power as a neutral Psychic. Obviously Psychic still helps by being more reliable, having the chance to drop special, and giving you more PP, but its benefits are a lot more situational than I initially thought.

    Good to see a Jrose video again after all this time 😁
    Lance's Gyarados is such a massive WALL for fire-types. I have been doing a few fire-type runs myself at this point and I can't state enough how bad that battle is.
    1. You either need to be really lucky and hope that Hydro Pump misses at least twice, and that the HP range does not go below the treshold for Lance to use Hyper Potions.
    2. You need to be at such a high level that one of your moves can knock it out in two hits, and that you have enough HP to survive even a critical hit.
    3. Pray that you don't get any misses.
    My two fire type runs are the following:
    Ninetales - Ended up at level 68, with a time of 3:23, and a moveset comprised of Fire Blast, Body Slam, Mimic and Dig. Lance was not that big of a problem for Ninetales due to its high Special stat, and ability to withstand Hydro Pump.
    Growlithe - Ended up at level 83! with a time of 6:53, and a moveset comprised of Flamethrower, Body Slam, Mimic and Dig. Lance proved extremely difficult, but once I got past his Gyarados, the run was essentially over.
    Now, I have been asking for a while about this, but is there a possibility that you could rank Dewgong? I think this one will surprise you. I re-ranked it recently, and got within striking distance of Mewtwo (by two minutes of game-time)

    • @aftertheelectrike1847

      I did several of these in Yellow. Ninetales was my fastest run overall (5:37) and still had quite a few issues overall. It beat out Vaporeon (5:44).
      Obviously, Jolteon was dead last for evolved dogs (9:40)

      @Skarfar90 9 месяцев назад

      @@aftertheelectrike1847 The "Punk-Rock Doggo" (thanks Scott for that amazing nickname) does indeed struggle quite a bit compared to its counterparts.
      As for the fire-types, I will do a full ranking of all of them to see which one is the very best, and as a bonus run, I will do Moltres, with actual good moves (starting out with Flamethrower and Drill Peck)
      My top surprises out of my 11 runs so far (following a mix between Jrose and Scott's Thoughts routes, itemless of course), has been:
      Muk - As a poison type, it did surprisingly well. Clocking in at 3:39, at level 65, it was pretty fast through the game, despite being a little slow in the beginning vs. Brock.
      Haunter - Amazing performance for being the middle stage. Ended up with a time of 3:01 at level 64, and had really no issues with beating the game pretty fast.
      Dewgong - Easily one of the best Pokémon that I have ever used in a run. Underrated and well balanced. It clocked in with a time of 2:42 at level 64 (granted, Mewtwo had a time of 2:40 at level 53). Only Agatha being a little bit troll'ey in the end, but other than that, it was a real walk in the park.

    Even tho you messed up with psychic, the video edit and explaination made up for it hundredfold.
    Idk why, but it made the whole "plot" more interesting with some different stuff to talk about x)
    And you know what they say, "you're a human, after all" :)
    Ty Jrose and AJ to never bore me with your videos ;)

    When I was a kid I liked Mega Punch? Probably because of the name? Even though the accuracy is garbage.
    But this reminded me of when I discovered Body Slam. I always hated recoil moves and I guess I just lumped Take Down, Double-Edge and Body Slam together because they were high power normal type moves that I thought all had recoil damage. Then one day I noticed that Body Slam paralyzes and doesn't have recoil and I was just like "😵...Why do those other moves even exist?!?"

    I actually love the "not using psychic" vs. "using psychic" of this run. Made this one of the most interesting gen 1 runs imo. It would be kind of cool to go back and try some other pokemon without a move or two to see how much changes it (porbably some of the better ones, maybe zapdos without thunder or something) also would be cool to revisit old runs and see if your current knowledge of routing and strategies improve their runs by a significant margin

  • @roamingnyiad
    @roamingnyiad 9 месяцев назад +5

    That's a bit brutal an error in moveset management alters the run a bit, but thankfully seems like you damage controlled the situation well enough to prevent the tier list from crumbling. Still was interesting you were honest about this and admitted the error. It's nice to know we can count on you to not withhold information. =)
    But yeah, interesting run even if Magmar wasn't exactly top tier regardless.
