Can you beat Pokemon Red/Blue with just a Venonat?

- Venonat is a weak Pokemon with a bad movepool and bad typing. Surely this run will be easy!

Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch. - Игры
Venonat wiping out viridian forest's bug pokemon population during training seems like an invasive species situation lmao
Venonat even looks like one.
Like the aisan long horned beetle 🪲 😂
I could totally imagine an episode of the anime about that
It makes 0 sense why venonat n paras werent viridian forest like viridian forest encounters should be here's your bugs
Have onix instead of paras in Mt moon also Mt moon should have allowed reentry from cerulean city
Have rhyhorn in the rock tunnel instead of safari zone
Have drowzee in lavender tower because they're creepy in a creepy tower instead of route 13
Throw some sandshrew n sandslash in diglett cave but make it low encounter rate
And why just tentacool n tentacruel on surf add a gyarados seaking poliwhirl
And why raticate in the mansion instead of fuschia or cycling road the mansion should have all the fire types be it's one stop shop
Victory road should have chansey to allow easy grinding for a full playthrough with 6
I agree with most of this, the mansion I think is pretty well stacked though
Venonat has got to be the most "just a little guy" Pokemon in the entirety of Gen 1. Just a round little dude that you could probably put into any RPG without it looking out of place.
Kuriboh if he was more buggy
yep it's even in that yugioh game
@@corenlavolpe6143oh...oh my gods...
I can't unsee it now.😮
@@jakecanningThe Sabrina episode, right?
Funny because in Stadium it is like really big.
I love how on the winning attempt of the champion, Venonat takes absolutely no damage

I cant wait to see a 45 min elite four run
It's much worse than that... Nearly halfway through and he still hasn't even gotten 6 badges...
It was literally 43 minutes , LIAR
Hey now it was 23 minutes. Put some respect on the name.
Wasn't that pidgey?
PRETTY sure when you pick this mon as a starter 8badges are gifted the elite 4 kneel and the credits begin running for a 120second run
You could have used Mimic on Agatha to learn Dream Eater and spare some Psychic’s PP. you were already using Sleep Powder and Dream Eater is both super effective and restore HP.
Dream eater is only 10 more base power and requires an extra turn of set up. Plus no 33% chance of lowering special. Granted it could've made the battle more consistent.
@@cherry9787Don't matter, it's still the better choice, he was even risking with Leech Life just to restore health to stay outside Night Shade range, risking wake ups. Dream eater negates all that risk.
I always find it interesting to see which pokemon will struggle against Brock. That being said, I expect that venonat would have done way worse. Either way, this was a fun run to watch.
This run honestly made me wonder how much faster/easier the run would be if
1. Venonat started with Leech Life instead of Tackle and didn't learn a move at level 23
2. Venonat started with Leech Life instead of Tackle and e.g. learned Confusion at level 23.
Since the two things that made the early run quite miserable were Brock brick walling your tackle and not having psychic until level 43.
One bit of feedback as the tier list keeps getting l longer, it would be nice if you could highlight the one being added. It can be hard to find them on the screen sometimes. Something as simple as a colored box around the cell in the table would be great
I agree but also we can zoom in
@@eanoworro1028not on mobile
@@eanoworro1028 even when we zoom in if the list is so big it's pixelated it'll be impossible to read upon zoon lol
Bide could have potentially been used to take out Misty's Starmie earlier on or help against Charmeleon at Rival 3. Venonat could live 2 embers at max hp and bide always hits, so sand attack wouldn't have interfered provided you could get to that point.
Not sure if either of these changes would have mattered in the long run though.
Bide's one of those moves that you try your hardest to forget about and end up not realizing the usefulness of it until its too late 😂
@@rarestpepe98 🤣
Venonat and Venomoth are so underrated, always loved them since gen I.
Really have to agree. Such an ideal design for a fun cartoon critter!!
I always REALLY liked the Venomoth from the original trading card game (also the TCG Gameboy game).
It still bothers me how obviously they swapped Venomoth's and Butterfree's families, given the eye similarities between Venonat and Butterfree. I do still like the design of both families though... well, except Metapod...
If by underrated, you mean garbage, then I agree.
Moth might be underrated, but Nat is not
This Venonat run gets the OG Bug Catcher official stamp of approval! 👍
Sure am glad Jrose is gonna do a separate video for every pokemon in every generation in which they appear!
venonat not getting confusion in R/B really hurts its viability. no wonder this run was pain.
Oh yeah it gets Confusion in Yellow doesn't it
@@joefarrow1599not sure about yellow but in gen 2 it definitely does, poor little dude. One of my fav mons
@@sniperfoshoAnd then it waited 7 generations to be in a regional dex again after that. Poor dude indeed.
Gen 1’s balancing is so bad one wonders how the series ever got off the ground.
@@EresirThe1stim still surprised how badly the pokemon games are balanced even in the modern era... bloody hell...
I spent my weekend in a bit of a rut and your videos were such a comfort watch throughout. Re-watching so many of the solo runs and other various challenges so to see a fresh episode added today is such an unreal treat. Thanks as always Jrose 🙌
Hey man keep your head up.
@@MrPladdy really appreciate it man! ❤
Don't let this distract you from the inevitable full length caterpie film
Caterpie cant get past the channeler in pkmn tower.

Lance: "Hey, where's the guy who keeps coming around and beating us with a single pokemon? He's really late!"
Sabrina: >.>
I finished my attempt at this level 77 and I was still using leech life. Can't wait to see how this unfolds
Double edge, leech life, sleep powder, psychic
Real one for still using leech life (my level 58 Parasect also using it)
@@enderluckjarmg985 literally all for Agatha and Alakazam
I think this is the first time in my life that I've seen Venonat's back sprite, and I played Red as a kid when it came out! Thank you JRose for the hours of frustrating entertainment and showing us everything we missed in this great game of all our childhoods.
Also, love the sly Nat King Cole reference with the names
Ohhh, that's what that was!
When JRose finishes this series, I would love to see him simply build his favorite team. Not strongest necessarily, but favorites.
@@eanoworro1028 Like the ones he had the most fun playing throughout the series and take them all through a legit playthrough?
Colour palette was on point here. Was like grape pop and cream soda, really pretty!
Absolutely miserable run though. That string of bad luck on the Sabrina and Blaine attempts hurt (not even counting the champion and Brock). I think Venomoth will be shockingly good too, so here's hoping!
It's always a good day when Jrose uploads a video

Aww and the the little edit against rival 6 charizard
I’m so used to Venonat learning Confusion that I was waiting for Jrose to say “and this is when we get Confusion and make Brock trivial” but sadly that part never came…
I had the same thought lol
I think the reason bug is so underpowered in gen 1 because it's actually great against a large portion of the game. Ive done scyther and Pinsir runs where I would change cut to a bug type move and it makes both of them hilariously overpowered
Erika, Sabrina, Misty, the rival's Alakazam and Exeggcuteor, and Koga..... Not bad, considering
Iirc wasn't Bug strong against poison in gen1, weirdly, so it's literally all the rockets too. (aside obvs weakness to them, but poison bug esp, back to neutral)
scyther and pinsir are the only ones with good stats and neither of them learn any bug moves 💀
@@DJFracus bet they are talking about frlg
@@rajkanishuNo they literally just used a GameShark or the like to turn cut into a bug type move. Cut is not a strong base power move so it just goes to show how ridiculous these mons would be if they had access to any bug type move at all.
1:28
It's those reactions to the gameplay that makes me wonder if Jrose records the audio after or during the gameplay... or maybe both.
His response to getting two crits in a row is just so genuine lol
I think he records so many of these that there's a backlog so then his later commentary is kinda reacting to moments he doesn't fully remember
no chance he remembers exactly everything that has happened in every battle on every attempt, he simply genuinely reacted to that moment during voiceover
AJ has been killing with his editing lately! It makes these great videos even better!
Video Idea
Tier lists for each Pokémon type and how they performed during each of these runs once you’ve done all Pokémon of that type in each generation.
Followed up by that 3 hour grand finale tier list when you’ve used every Pokémon!
He's been actively keeping a tier list for the whole series. 1:00:47
This is basically "if Weedle/Caterpie had actual moves".
Leech Life being useful was the last thing I expected, nice job; I wouldn't have thought of it.
I feel like most of gen 1 is designed to teach you to play Pokemon games and Weedle/Caterpie are meant to teach you to evolve cuz in early game Beedrill and Butterfree slay. But then again, in the whole game metapod and kakuna are trash which might make you second guess evolving. So. Idk. Good talk, bro 😅
I can't begin to explain how happy these videos make me.
Always love getting to Elite Four and seeing over 20 minutes left on the video xD
Thank you for continuing this series. I've seen every one and always enjoy the new episodes. ❤️
Great job Jrose and keep up the amazing job
One of my favorite 'mons!! Tracy's Venonat in the anime was cute. Also cute: the additional AJ-content in these videos!
I always kind of cheer for Leech Life to stay up until the end, it is a bad move overall, but considering the lack of bug moves and how it's not often bug types get stab, it feels nice to see it until the end, like cheering for the underdog to overperform.
“Venonat gets Psychic movesand Sleep Powder. How bad can it be?”
I love how you can hear the madness settling in during the E4 runs. This is probably one of the most painful runs I’ve ever seen done with this sheeeesh
So funny to see a run where Blain's Superpotions really make a difference haha
AJ adding the count during Rival 6 was priceless
Tried this challenge in Yellow and even that took me ages before the first gym and until the mid 90s to beat the game, I can’t imagine how hard red/blue will be
I love how the 2 geodude + graveler hiker has become such an infamous trainer that he gets his own designated segment in these videos
You’re my favorite RUclipsr! Always stoked when you upload, keep it up man!
In the future, if another Pokémon takes a long time on Brock it would be cool to have the Mewtwo run play in the corner to show have far it progressed in the same time
P.S. Great run, as always!
That is a brilliant idea
Seconded. This is a great idea
Jrose videos just make me forget everything bad in life for the time it’s on
I miss the GBA intro so much lol... I love watching your older videos with that as your intro... gets me back into my childhood seeing it
Ah. As a kid I wouldn’t even bother catching a Venonat because I thought it was useless. When Fire Red/Leaf Green came out I decided I was going to try a team of Pokémon I hadn’t used before, and ended up falling in love with 3 of the “useless” Pokémon I spent years neglecting.
I still have a soft spot for Cloyster and Exeggutor, but Venomoth has been on every team I’ve used since then. This video brought back so many happy memories.
I love Venonat, it's my favourite bug mon, if not my favourite overall, so cute, so funny looking.💜 If I could have any Pokémon as a pet, I would choose it.
Paras
I still to this day think that the Oddish run was the worst lol. Jrose is just getting some of the WORST luck I've ever seen! Love the content xD
That Mirror Move from a missed Sleep Powder was painfully funny.
"We get Leech Life, that's gonna suck"
I see what you did there JRose 😉
Mimic once again carrying the run. Without it soo many would drop like flies
No wonder mimic was nerfed lmao

I'm not one to enjoy your pain normally but the champion fight was super entertaining for just how bad the luck was this go around. looking forward to your next video!
Haaii JRose, sleep hasn't been with me, insomnia is kicking my beehind. Thanks for the uploads lately, that sweet dose of nostalgia has kept me entertained and engaged on long form content! Thank you for being (basically) back and hope you are doing way better than me, altough doing this with a Venonat sounds like hell 😅
As somebody who struggles with delayed sleep phase disorder I understand your struggle and I hope you manage to find the sweet release of sleep soon
@@bronwaith Thank you so much for the kind comment, hope you can also sleep well when you do. Bless you 🙌🏽
Before watching, I just wanna say that this has always been my favourite pokémon ever since gen 1 when I was 3 years old, so this is a big day for me! :D
Edit: ok, this was a nightmare. I'm so sorry and I'm not sure who to direct it towards more, Jrose or Venonat.
Venomoth is one of my favourite pokémon aswell, and I was actually baffled that I hadn't used it in any run yet - turns out this is very easy to explain since I just realized that aside from Kanto/Johto, it literally never was available before the national dex until *finally* Scarlet/Violet. What a shame.
@@youtube-kit9450 Huh, I didn't even realise. Tbf, there are a lot of early route bug pokemon that have cooler evolutions, so I don't think it's that much of a shame, but it would be nice if they gave Venonat something nice soon. Like a branched evolution or even a third one that resembles the first stage a little more :)

Great upload, thanks JRose!
OH YEAH LET'S GO AN HOUR LONG EPIC FOR THE AGES
This is such a cool series. A little late in the game- but you should do a randomizer at the end of each video to choose which one you do the next run with (depending how far ahead you are compared to the videos that are released I suppose). That would give it another layer of excitement and challenge!
Omg earliest I've ever been! Love the colour pallete as always! Length of video is scary haha
Legit venonat is my favourite Pokémon, such an adorable little floof, glad to see him getting the spotlight for once !! Amazing run btw !
I know that it was very frustrating to play, but I don’t think it was overly unlucky? Needing to sleep powder 5 of the rival’s pokemon, plus avoiding them waking up too early, crits, and other rng like leer, I think the strategy was just doomed to be miserable. Maybe at level 90 or something it’d be more consistent, but that’s also a huge time sink.
Venonat is one of those Pokemon I wish was available a little earlier in Gen 1. It's so cool!
By the time it becomes available it's already irrelevant.
Let’s go another Jrose video! Came in thinking maybe it would be good since it probably got physic. But looking at the length and stats at beginning it’s not looking great…we shall see. Anyways thanks for another quick video, you’re the best! Time to enjoy
The best part of my day was getting the notification about this video I love ur content so much Jrose!!
Anyone who plays Dungeons and Dragons can tell you that 1/16th isn't that unlikely.
I found Venomoth to be surprisingly good (at least for what I was expecting) but Venonat is a very rough time
Need more AJ and Jrose banter an communication. Those little tidbits are always so fun
Hi Jrose!
I love to watch your videos while knitting since I don't really have to focus that much on them, but I still enjoy your experiences :)
I just so happened to get a Shiny Venonat in Violet once i saw this video, so what timing that a solo run about Venonat gets uploaded
That's super nice. I got one in Fire Red. The timing was great!
Any chance we can get a spreadsheet of what you named your character and your rival for each pokemon you used?
Whoo another video! Happy to see it.
YES! Been waiting so long for this one!
A ralts solo run would be epic
Basically abra
I can feel the video release pace picking up. Will there be a month of jrose to look forward to?
Man I love your narrations, watching you I feel like watching a world cup final
When I saw Venonat on the thumbnail I already knew the video would last 1 hour long
Man, could you imagine how different this run would be with the version of Leech Life in the newer era games where it has way more base power (if I recall it has 80 instead of gen 1’s 20 base power)?
The Brock section would still have been suffering, but the improved Leech Life would basically be the “Body Slam” this run needed until getting Psychic.
This should be a interesting run. I honestly might have took Psybeam over Psychic here just to for the confusion as well not many moves it can have . Iam interested again to see what you come up with to win again
Sure, a million people will watch Jrose vids for big name, powerhouse pokemon like Mewtwo, or Bidoof. But thank you Jrose for being a completionist. I do love watching these random pokemon get time in the spotlight.
