Funny to think that ponyta doesn’t learn anything new until level 30 because you can’t catch them lower than 28. So a level 5 ponyta shouldn’t exist in gen 1. Pokemon has become so much of a strategic battler collectathon that we can forget how gen 1 was a much simpler RPG adventure.
@@sebastiankulche It's objectively bad. Psychic types overpowered, random misses, some moves like focus energy literally don't work, moves like fire spin being super annoying, random misses on 100% accuracy, and the list goes on.
@@stevenclark5173 Normal types were way more powerful than psychic, moves accuracy is way more realistic (why a move would never miss, lol), attacks like fire spin compensates with low pp and damage so i wouldnt recommend it, and i agree with focus energy being one of the few real flaws (although not an attack that you really need). Even if all of that was true it still wouldnt be bad. Being incredible revolutionary and still playable and yet is a portable game released in 1996. If its a bad game for having some few unbalanced aspects then Final Fantasy is bad, Earthbound is bad, Chrono Trigger is bad, etc...

Constantly having to narrate the radio tower portion would get pretty monotonous after a while too. Gen 2 has a huge chunk of boring battles at the halfway point
@@PeterJohnBolgert It's because the story arc of the challenge is weird. There's a rising action in the first act, so to speak, until rockets. Then there's another rise from Claire until the elite 4. Then there's a drastic fall in Kanto. Then a huge rise for Blue and Red. It just doesn't work well.
46:30 fun fact: in gen 1, ohko moves can only hit if you're faster than the opponent. The level mechanic was added at gen 2 or 3 if I remember correctly

Get hit with stat reducing move after gym 1? reset. Weird things that aren't supposed to happen happen? reset. You're allowed to save. Good luck.
I have watched a video talking about this idea recently and I remember that video says that it is impossible to not encounter a glitch. Basically in the introduction of the game, there is a nidorino shown and the game plays nidorina’s cry instead of nidorino’s cry. (Also I saw jrose’s comment in that video and he said he does not want to attempt this)

there's a video on lowest percent about this. i would argue the wrong cry being used in the intro is not a glitch since it's the game acting directly how it's programmed, they just used the wrong cry sound ID. but everything else is solid
not only that, but you can only use 100% accurate moves because if you use another move, it could have been a Gen 1 miss and you wouldnt know. same goes for having accuracy lowered.
Having old throwback memes like The Count is good because you can always sneak in references to them down the line and the OGs will flip while the new kids will ask questions in the comments which is good for the algorithm.
Awesome to see you back! I think Bellsprout would be a fun run to see. It has very limited attacking moves, but it gets both Growth (at Level 1!) and Swords Dance. Also, I feel like maybe skipping the Agility on Gyarados and just trying to 2HKO with Body Slam may have been a more consistent option.

Only possible reason would be if the Dragonair has Thunder Wave (making it too risky to set up on, as even though Agility bypasses the Thunder Wave speed drop you still have a 25% chance of not moving each turn) but I don't think it does. So if he has to set up Agility it would be much better on Dragonair and instead go straight for Body Slam on Gyarados.
I nearly beat red at minimum battles with Bellsprout, jrose style. Final moveset was growth/sleep powder/mimic/acid, if I remember correctly. The early game is pretty tough, until you get through Mt. Moon. First bug catcher has the most resets, you have to hope that it just keeps using string shot. Can take a while, but growth really helps. I got stuck on the Elite 4. It seemed very doable, I just didn't have the resources. And I kept getting frozen by the damn lapras. Lorelei is easy if you don't get frozen. Bruno is Bruno. Agatha depends a bit on sleep luck. I mimicked dream eater and put them to sleep with sleep powder. As long as you hit with sleep powder, Agatha isn't tough at all. There's just a lot of little luck things with Agatha and Lorelei, I swear I got frozen by ice beam 5 times in a row before I rage quit. As long as the gyrados doesn't use hyper beam, you should be able to take it down though.
Seriously how are these videos still so good. You'd think maybe doing the same run over and over would get boring but no, still my favourite series on RUclips, by far. Gen 2 has so much going against it when it comes to these challenge videos. The rival fights are all easy save Azalea town, the rocket plotline is a slog, and the kanto boss rush is usually incidental at best. It's a real shame, Johto is my favorite region.

It’s always great to see a new Jrose video! Regarding the Lance fight, I wonder if it would have been viable to 2HKO the Gyarados and then set up against the Dragonair rather than Gyarados. Without badge boosts, it certainly would be harder to take out Gyarados, though. With that said, this was a really fun watch and I’m excited to see what you have in store for us next!

Bro I love your challenge videos, they have the perfect balance between commentary, jokes, math, strategy... everything. I have watched a few other youtubers that do challenge runs of not only pokemon but other games as well, and none of them pull it off as well as you do.
I'm glad you always mention the badge boost glitch because when I was a dumb kid I'd literally never use moves that raised my stats because I thought they were useless garbage, I inadvertently made the games much harder for myself without knowing it

These are actually the only videos I click immediately when I get the notification. That's how I excited I get about each and every single one. Plus, I cheered when he won the final battle. as another gen 1 fun fact, you WERE safe against rhydons fissure but not for the reason you think. the level check for ohko moves was a gen 2 in addition. in gen 1, the moves instead always have 30% accuracy, but do an extra check. if the targets speed stat (and thats actual speed, not base speed) is higher than the user's, ohko moves will fail. this is particularly funny because as far as i can tell the only time youll see the ai use pokemon with these moves is rhydon (giovannis and the rivals) who are crazy slow. typical gen 1 design though in that sense.
My thought was "Bulbasaur and Squirtle are both slow and bulky, maybe this is a meant to counter a Super Effective starter pokemon or just to generally make sure you're training a variety" But no, Blastoise more than doubles Rhyhorn so I don't see how you could reach those fights with a team comp that'd be slow enough to fall for it

These are some of my favorite runs to watch. A pokemon like Ponyta isn't immediately thought to be some crazy insane S+ tier but it's also not one you really think of being bad either. I think it's more interesting to see where average pokemon struggles or succeeds VS an obviously great or obviously bad pokemon where it's a bit more expected.
No one is beating Gastly but Tentacool might come close. Swords Dance for badge boost and wrap. But doesn't get water moves till level 22 so Brock will slow it down.
I agree that gen 2 is pretty lackluster but I actually really like gen 5. I thought the Pokémon variety and quality was great, the quality of life changes like reusable TMs, refreshing repels, and abilities being improved were really nice. The story wasn’t anything to write home about, but having the character of N go through a lot of development was pretty neat. Team plasma themselves were pretty boring but ghetsis and N were strong characters
In the grand scheme of things you're right, but for Pokemon standards the story was outstanding. I think Galactic was the most interesting game (just because they didn't even have the same goal as their boss, it was all a lie) but Plasma wasn't bad by any means. Especially the way they're introduced and then the first encounters with their grunts doing bad stuff. It felt more warranted than Rockets "eh, we're gangsters here" or Galactic's "we kidnapped this man and are using him as a slave because reasons"
Honestly, for repeated runs, cutscenes are a big negative. It is just not fun standing there 5 minutes mashing A because at this point you memorized every single line.

A joke being a running joke doesn't make it repetitive, in fact the repetition is what makes it funny. The joke works because you expect it to keep appearing from time to time. As long as you don't run it into the ground there's no need to outright kill it. Just use it whenever you feel like using it.

Funny to think that ponyta doesn’t learn anything new until level 30 because you can’t catch them lower than 28. So a level 5 ponyta shouldn’t exist in gen 1. Pokemon has become so much of a strategic battler collectathon that we can forget how gen 1 was a much simpler RPG adventure.

Yep, because breeding didn't exist back then. It was GSC that introduced level-up moves well below the Pokemon's wild encounter level.

@@sebastiankulche It's objectively bad. Psychic types overpowered, random misses, some moves like focus energy literally don't work, moves like fire spin being super annoying, random misses on 100% accuracy, and the list goes on.
@@stevenclark5173 Normal types were way more powerful than psychic, moves accuracy is way more realistic (why a move would never miss, lol), attacks like fire spin compensates with low pp and damage so i wouldnt recommend it, and i agree with focus energy being one of the few real flaws (although not an attack that you really need).
Even if all of that was true it still wouldnt be bad. Being incredible revolutionary and still playable and yet is a portable game released in 1996. If its a bad game for having some few unbalanced aspects then Final Fantasy is bad, Earthbound is bad, Chrono Trigger is bad, etc...

Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!

Constantly having to narrate the radio tower portion would get pretty monotonous after a while too. Gen 2 has a huge chunk of boring battles at the halfway point
@@PeterJohnBolgert It's because the story arc of the challenge is weird. There's a rising action in the first act, so to speak, until rockets. Then there's another rise from Claire until the elite 4. Then there's a drastic fall in Kanto. Then a huge rise for Blue and Red. It just doesn't work well.
46:30 fun fact: in gen 1, ohko moves can only hit if you're faster than the opponent. The level mechanic was added at gen 2 or 3 if I remember correctly
Not just faster, your base speed needs to be higher. Even with +6 speed your Rhyhorn still can't land a horn drill

New impossible challenge idea: Beat R/B without encountering a glitch. Miss a 100% accurate move? reset. Get hit with stat reducing move after gym 1? reset. Weird things that aren't supposed to happen happen? reset.

I have watched a video talking about this idea recently and I remember that video says that it is impossible to not encounter a glitch. Basically in the introduction of the game, there is a nidorino shown and the game plays nidorina’s cry instead of nidorino’s cry. (Also I saw jrose’s comment in that video and he said he does not want to attempt this)
So waste a bunch of time to avoid things that are fun?
Better idea: Beat R/B with as many glitches in as many encounters as possible

i would argue the wrong cry being used in the intro is not a glitch since it's the game acting directly how it's programmed, they just used the wrong cry sound ID. but everything else is solid
not only that, but you can only use 100% accurate moves because if you use another move, it could have been a Gen 1 miss and you wouldnt know. same goes for having accuracy lowered.
Having old throwback memes like The Count is good because you can always sneak in references to them down the line and the OGs will flip while the new kids will ask questions in the comments which is good for the algorithm.

I think Bellsprout would be a fun run to see. It has very limited attacking moves, but it gets both Growth (at Level 1!) and Swords Dance.
Also, I feel like maybe skipping the Agility on Gyarados and just trying to 2HKO with Body Slam may have been a more consistent option.
Yeah, I too wondered why he didn't at least try not using Agility against Gyarados, if not Lance himself.

Only possible reason would be if the Dragonair has Thunder Wave (making it too risky to set up on, as even though Agility bypasses the Thunder Wave speed drop you still have a 25% chance of not moving each turn) but I don't think it does. So if he has to set up Agility it would be much better on Dragonair and instead go straight for Body Slam on Gyarados.

I nearly beat red at minimum battles with Bellsprout, jrose style. Final moveset was growth/sleep powder/mimic/acid, if I remember correctly.
The early game is pretty tough, until you get through Mt. Moon. First bug catcher has the most resets, you have to hope that it just keeps using string shot. Can take a while, but growth really helps.
I got stuck on the Elite 4. It seemed very doable, I just didn't have the resources. And I kept getting frozen by the damn lapras. Lorelei is easy if you don't get frozen. Bruno is Bruno. Agatha depends a bit on sleep luck. I mimicked dream eater and put them to sleep with sleep powder. As long as you hit with sleep powder, Agatha isn't tough at all. There's just a lot of little luck things with Agatha and Lorelei, I swear I got frozen by ice beam 5 times in a row before I rage quit. As long as the gyrados doesn't use hyper beam, you should be able to take it down though.

Need to get back to my own runs, I did Grimer, Scyther and Shellder back to back about a year ago but haven't done any since.
Gen 2 has so much going against it when it comes to these challenge videos. The rival fights are all easy save Azalea town, the rocket plotline is a slog, and the kanto boss rush is usually incidental at best. It's a real shame, Johto is my favorite region.
On the other hand, you have Whitney.

It’s always great to see a new Jrose video! Regarding the Lance fight, I wonder if it would have been viable to 2HKO the Gyarados and then set up against the Dragonair rather than Gyarados. as another gen 1 fun fact, you WERE safe against rhydons fissure but not for the reason you think. the level check for ohko moves was a gen 2 in addition. in gen 1, the moves instead always have 30% accuracy, but do an extra check. if the targets speed stat (and thats actual speed, not base speed) is higher than the user's, ohko moves will fail. this is particularly funny because as far as i can tell the only time youll see the ai use pokemon with these moves is rhydon (giovannis and the rivals) who are crazy slow. typical gen 1 design though in that sense.
My thought was "Bulbasaur and Squirtle are both slow and bulky, maybe this is a meant to counter a Super Effective starter pokemon or just to generally make sure you're training a variety"
But no, Blastoise more than doubles Rhyhorn so I don't see how you could reach those fights with a team comp that'd be slow enough to fall for it
Time to get a Rhydon to maximum Speed and spam Fissure on everything

These are some of my favorite runs to watch. A pokemon like Ponyta isn't immediately thought to be some crazy insane S+ tier but it's also not one you really think of being bad either. I think it's more interesting to see where average pokemon struggles or succeeds VS an obviously great or obviously bad pokemon where it's a bit more expected.

I agree that gen 2 is pretty lackluster but I actually really like gen 5. I thought the Pokémon variety and quality was great, the quality of life changes like reusable TMs, refreshing repels, and abilities being improved were really nice. The story wasn’t anything to write home about, but having the character of N go through a lot of development was pretty neat. Team plasma themselves were pretty boring but ghetsis and N were strong characters
In the grand scheme of things you're right, but for Pokemon standards the story was outstanding. I think Galactic was the most interesting game (just because they didn't even have the same goal as their boss, it was all a lie) but Plasma wasn't bad by any means.
Especially the way they're introduced and then the first encounters with their grunts doing bad stuff.
It felt more warranted than Rockets "eh, we're gangsters here" or Galactic's "we kidnapped this man and are using him as a slave because reasons"
Honestly, for repeated runs, cutscenes are a big negative. It is just not fun standing there 5 minutes mashing A because at this point you memorized every single line.

I wish someone would reprogram red and blue in the original 90's GB digital style and include a gen 1 battle tower, a pvp battle mode, and more challenging AI battles, new areas, gyms and npc's.
