I've been trying to sell 4-doors like this for a while. Just sold a 1939 Chrysler. Finally have my last one to sell, a 1938 Plymouth, cannot get it out yet. Your car survived the duration (of WWII) but the straight 8 didn't handle gas rationing well. Yours has updated (nonorginal) sealed beam headlights, probably the amber parking/directional signals added at that time, the windshield and back window seals are not original, probably the glass was replaced, which required new gaskets. 1939 was the last Oldsmobile before the Hydromatic automatic transmission was offered. The tires are old, keep the speed down because the tread could easily separate. The final year for the floor shift, with column shift introduced in 1939. Aftermarket alternator.

It was quite common after 1940 for people to retrofit sealed beam headlamps to cars built before 1940. 40 was the first year sealed beam headlamps were legal, and they were pretty much universally adopted. The gaiters (covers) on the rear leafs were more to hold in grease than to keep out debris... Packed full of grease they minimize squeaking from the leaf springs as they compress and the individual leafs slide over each other.

Agreed. You could get these covers for a lot of british cars, they were made of leather or faux leather, filled with grease and then strung to the spring packets. I think there were even ones with a small nipple where you could put a grease pump on to refill them from time to time.

By the time you've finished working on it, it'll probably be good enough to occupy a museum display, and be worth double what you paid for it, because cars this old in condition as good as this, are, as we say here in the UK, rarer than rocking horse droppings :)

@@JohanNilsson1966 I wash my engines several times a year. Spray it down with the green tire/engine cleaner at the car wash wash, the presoak, then use the spot free rinse to wash it up. 240,000 miles on the vehicle and the engine looks almost new. The belt and hoses last longer because you wash off the oily grime that degrades them, doing things like checking or adding fluids doesn't get you dirty, and even more complex work you stay much cleaner. The best part is that it looks absolutely amazing. It take just minutes.. and makes a huge difference.

Or, if they are removed to be media-blasted, what should they be coated with to help preserve them and give a good finish?

I got curious and looked up the tire brand. Lester Tire Co. is a similar brand to Coker Tires as they're modern reproductions of vintage tires used for doing period correct restorations. That or just using them as a modern replacement for an already original vehicle. You are correct in your guess that they're bias-ply tires. Being a modern reproduction also means that they shouldn't be too old, so they should still be good for future use. The one website I found selling that exact model & size of tire has them listed for $233.00 each, so there's almost $1,000 in just your tires. Best of all, they're Made In USA. :)
