If you hold the stick in park manually, you dont have to do it hard, then turn it off it will turn off completely. My wife figured it out after a while. Give it a try it is not too frustrating having to do it after a while.

I know it's an old video but I think I found an easier way to fix this rather than gluing something back onto it. When you take the switch out just rip the rubber tip off which leaves a hole. Through the hole put a small cable tie making sure the cable tie knob is where the groove was. Then wrap another cable tie around the base to keep the knob facing out. No need to glue anything on.

Thank you! Successfully did this repair on my 2014 CX-5 with part from Amazon. Felt like open-car surgery with all the little plastic clips to undo.
I found it easier to get at the part by going to the back seat & unscrewing the 2 bottom screws to then shift the center console back. There are other videos that do it this way.
Very challenging to get the electrical part in last step unhinged. I had to borrow needle nose pliers to pry them apart.

Thanks buddy. I just changed the part today and sure as heck that rubbery thing at the tip was worn out. Caution to other folks. The white thing with the spring, be very careful because it has 2 tabs and you can only see one. Be super gentle and put a towel in all open console area. My spring flew out and fortunately fell outside the console area. Phew.

Thank you! I've got a 2014 CX-5 with the same issue since I had noticed it... I checked *and can confirm it is compatible with the 2014 model, the part shown in the video* . Also, for "fun"; It's a $423.49 for/from the Dealership to do the work. The part (from their service dept.) is $118; and of course - aftermarket ones are half that on average with some of the highest being around $70's.
In other words, buy the part & do it yourself or have a savvy friend/family member do it.
You *will* save hundreds of dollars and it's not an exaggeration, I called & went through the process to see (for myself) just how far the Dealership(s) are willing to go, to inflate the price... Enough to give some high blood pressure - I have no doubts lol.

WTF! Any idea why this is?

Thats what RUclips is for, life saver. However I’ve attempted to fix the wearing part by using duct tape to beef up the rubber tip that wears out. So far it’s working but fingers crossed it holds out. At least I know the faulty part and how to get to it now. That little white plastic piece holding the spring is a pain to get back on, partly because I didn’t remove all the console covers, just bent it to the side. I nearly dropped the spring down into the abyss.

I first watched your video in Australia about 6 months ago. I have had this issue for a year or two. You video was amazing! I located the same part for Aussie cars and ordered from a Japan seller (steering wheel on opposite side in Australia, so part number is slightly different - KDY1-46-040). I think the part was about 40 USD including shipping and it was a genuine Mazda part.
Finally after sitting on the part for over 6 months I decided to have a go. I re-watched your video and completed the fix in about an hour. Works perfectly now!!! Between the part and labor here in Australia I saved about 500 USD I'd say. I am not a car guy and have NEVER tried to fix anything on it but you made it look so easy, thanks again!
My only call out in relation to the video is I was not able to wedge my screwdriver in between the console panels to get to the two screws. So I ended up taking the console off from the screws behind the front seats and this made it extremely easy. You don't need to take the whole middle console off, just undo the screws and it slides back easily enough to get the work done. I also found getting the part itself disconnected from the wiring was quite difficult and I was super worried to break it. People should be sure to find where the clip is and somehow wedge it free. In spite of some of these little issues your video got me though all of it, it was great.
Thanks again for saving me about 500 USD and making me the hero of the house:)

I had the same problem ... took it to the dealer's and they replaced it ( $175.00 + labor ) and less than 2 months later same problem again. When I called the dealer he said must be a cable ?? Not sure if this is actually the problem I inquired to what replacement would cost he stated around $600.00. Right now when not shutting off as it should I shift tranny into reverse and then in part ...it works for how long not sure.

    • @bigmurff
      @bigmurff  Год назад

I would say if you are willing to, you can buy another switch unit on Amazon and try to change it yourself and see if that cures the problem. If it doesn't, Amazon has a generous return policy. They almost accept anything back used or not to be honest. But if that fixed your issue, you should go back to the dealer and bring the switch the dealer installed and ask for compensation. Work done at the dealer should be warranted for some time period, 90 days or for a year or whatever.

Thank you! This saved me a lot of money, time and grief. It gave me a great understanding of what pieces needed to be removed, and how. I initially threw a new Optima at it, thinking the issue with not being able to turn it fully off was due to the battery being on the way out. But when the new battery was completely dead a little while later (5.7V), and the jump start setting on our battery charger would get accessories working but not start the car, I dove into the internet and started researching. The switch replacement was fairly painless -- it was more difficult pulling out the dead Optima, getting it replaced by the auto parts store and cleaning all the acid residue from the battery area. It would have been $$ to have the car towed to Mazda for diagnoses and repair.

Recently replaced mine due to this problem. Whilst changing over I noticed that the spring (see at 14.06 in video) did not appear to be positioned properly - one arm of the spring was out of position and visible. I repositioned the spring arm back underneath - I gave it a slight bend to make sure it stayed in position. I feel that the spring might have been the problem, however I now have the new switch installed also.

I fixed it by using following:
    1. Electric tape
    2. Super glue
I cut the electric tape in real slim strip. Then folded it a few times to put this in the spot that has the cut. Then I super glued it and placed electric tape over it and super glued it too. Let's see how long it holds.
RUclips wont let me post image links.
    Hopefully this helps someone.

so you didn't buy the replacement part?

@@Sophia-lc9ow actually I had the new part from Amazon on hand with me. But with the above method, I fixed the existing part and returned the new part. The effort will be the same for removing the old part. Since I was able to fix the original part and the fix is really just about the contact point, I preferred the existing OEM part rather than replace with a new part that may or may not be original 😀. To be honest if you are going to remove the old part yourself, then the I am sure you will be able to fix the rubber contact point yourself. Just get creative. FYI, mine is still holding up fine and its been 5 months.
