If you want to do it you self, but in doubt of buying through private car part sales places after measuring pads then always order from dealership genuine parts. Never order aftermarket parts, Brembo is another issue we face as many people order Brembo brake parts and experience good to bad faults. Biggest of all is incorrect alignment, and often occur through ordering new pins that are too short or to big in size. Ionised water is just quick tip on cleaning the rust off before priming, spraying and painting to lubing back on.
As a service advisor for a Mazda dealership in california, this is only semi accurate. Recalls fix the DLR and Liftgate damper. As for the windshield, parking brake, and uneven wear of brakes, I've yet to see it. I personally oversee thousands and thousands of repairs to Mazdas (a large percentage of which are this era, but the cx5 is definitely very popular) over the course of a even just a year, which tells me if these are a "common" issue, its relatively non existent based on stats. All in all in my experience, these are great commuter cars and very reliable
2015 75k miles, so far brake rotors, front struts, serp belt + tensioner. Not too bad. Fog lights come aimed uselessly low but can easily be readjusted.
Yes that was my thought. All Mazda’s post Ford are very reliable. They went back to Japanese engineering. My 2017 CX-9 is 99% parts from Japan, made in Japan. Even the master branded oil filter and windshield wiper blade refills are made in Japan. It’s been rock solid, even as a first model year car after a full redesign.
Yes. I bought mine brand new in April 2017, 118k miles now (yea, horrible, but im in transportation business)... never had any issues, or had to fix anything besides normal maintenance (brakes, tune up, battery..etc)
Yes it is, I have the 2016 gt and it's amazing, I never liked a car like this one before, so fun to drive and it still looking good for a 5 years vehicule, other than regular maintenance, only the brake was done on it and The headlight changed on a recall The only downside it's that the drl LEDs replacement are weaker than the OEM.
Made in Japan! I own a 16 cx5 and that is why I was not nervous stepping into my used 2016 6. Great vehicles forged crank forged rods aluminum pistons and a smooth transmission. Like I texted MADE IN JAPAN!!😍
Love my mazda cx-5!!! I watched this video thinking you were going to talk about an engine problem or something serious like that, but then I remembered you were talking about a mazda ;)
THAT’S IT?? That is a great SUV and I owned 2 of those models and I never experienced any of those problems, the only issue I’ve had was with the infotainment system. GREAT vehicle!! I purchased a CX-30 now.
I've had the 1st gen CX-5 since 2013: 1- I got the standard with no day time running lights 2- Never had this windshield problem 3- Never had the liftgate problem 4- I remember only changing my breaks literally once only because they were squeeking 5- I have a crank break :) Actual problem I had: 1- I had damaged the front radiator for the A/C (I think a stone hit it or something) which cause the compressor to fail due because there was no A/C gas(Feron) 2- The mass airflow sensor failed which cause some weird issues and random car turnoff, replacing it was the fix 3- There is a switch inside the gear changer that detects when you are in P. Now I need to push the gear lever towards the P because it wont get detected properly and allow the car to turn off, Its a cheap part you need to replace. I think that's all the problems I had. I have 195000 Kilometers on it
I have mazda cx 2013 AWD. I encountered the same problem as what you had.... 1. The Mass air flow sensor issue which was replaced at the mazda service center for approx $120 for parts and labour 2. The gear switch sensor that cost $200 in the mazda service center for parts and labour 3. The righthand side mirror motor folding issue. Mazda 2013 CX5 AWD at 158, 000 kms
When you say standard what do you mean by that? I was thinking you had a manual transmission but after you're mentioning the park I'm figuring it was not a manual transmission.
Bought my 2014 (with a stick shift!) used a few years ago. No major issues, just hit 100k miles and going strong. I drive 60/40 highway/city and noticed the oil gets too dark for my liking before the 7,500 manufacturer recommended change interval. I change it every 5,000 instead.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the front door speaker failure. Mazda did not seal the speakers from the moisture that the windows bring in when they are rolled down, so the glue holding the speaker cone to the speaker frame eventually disintegrates. Actually kind of an easy fix if you're ok taking the door panel off and applying proper speaker glue to the edges of the cone. But the speakers will rattle like crazy with any amount of bass if you don't apply this fix, and too much glue while applying the fix can also make the speakers too dull or prevent them from calibrating with Bose's on-the-fly equalization. I did one speaker a year or so ago and the second one started rattling recently so I'll be fixing that soon.
Got a 2016.5 Grand Touring with 48K miles on it, still drives like a gem. Give it to my daughter for school and work and she loves it! Great C.U.V for the money..
I just bought a 2014 CX-5 GT with 158k miles from the original owner. It had cold start misfires, a bad coil, needed rear brakes, and a set of tires, but that was all. A carbon cleanup of the intake fixed the misfires and now the acceleration is much improved.
The DRL and liftgate piston issue were both in a recall. Our 2014 CX-5 Touring was affected by the liftgate piston recall and the recall happened about a month after we got it.
You don’t have to replace the rotors just because you’re replacing the pads. Pads are disposable items, rotors aren’t. You can machine them if uneven but otherwise leave them alone until they become too thin.
I've got a 2016 cx-5 256K miles on it, daily driver and work vehicle. So far I've had no issues that I didn't cause in one way or another and I'm very thankful for that. I wasn't even aware these issues existed. My only complaint is my model doesn't have any LED lights.
My wife and I love our 2016 Mazda CX-5 .The only issue has been the broken latch on the central consile and now at 75000 the radiator developed a bit of play, front to back 1/4 inch maybe.
The issue with the lift gate was taken care of with a factory recall. The dealer fixed it for free. I did also notice the issue with the calipers. I had to replace my pads earlier than I should have. I also had to replace all the rotors. This was on my 2015 CX-5.
2008 mazda 3 that I got 120k miles out if it. Moved up to a 2014 mazda cx5, got 147k miles. Went back to a mazda 3 in 2017 and currently have 111k on it with not problems. The only thing I replaced on any of my mazda vehicles was the oil, tires, and brakes. Never touched the transmission on any of these vehicles.
I have a 2016 model CX5, only problem I had is the torn bushing in the front control arms...it got damaged due to the poor road condition here in Toronto. Huge pot holes. Overall, this car is solid. I would say they are very close to Toyota standards when it comes to reliability, gas efficiency and performance. Its fast enough with good power so I dont get bullied in the highway too. I love the interior as well, it looks good and looking like a bmw x5. My daughter is going to uni and im planning to give her this can and I upgrade to a 2018 model CX5.
I had a 2014 Cx5. My biggest issue is under body rust of the suspension parts, calipers and rotors. I put 122,000 miles on it. No engine ,electronic or transmission issues. The bracket holding the SCB system on windshield became loose. I now have a 2016.5 Cx5 and hope that parking brake and LED drl don’t crap themselves.
There are two major issues hitting the early CX-5 1st Generations with a 2.0L: 1) Exhaust manifold failure. Mazda welded about 8" of exhaust PIPE to the end of the manifold and welded the first hanger here. It is through that weld these are rotting through. Repairing this requires replacement of the exhaust manifold (an $1800 part IF you can find one) and a very long repair (drop the engine), 2) The power steering motor failing. A part that runs $1400, very hard to obtain and is a very long, involved repair. I love my CX-5s (I have 3: 2013, 2015, 2018 as well as a CX-30), but the parts pricing is ridiculous (with no aftermarket solutions)
This video covers things that are not part of my 2013 CX-5 Touring. It does not have LED daytime running lights or electronic parking brakes. The lift gate pistons were a recall replacement. The rear brakes wore normally until they needed replaced at 93K miles. The windshield did not have that cracking problem before it was replaced due to a golf ball sized piece of Michigan road salt. At 248K+ miles, it is still a great car. Fixed the door speaker issue myself. The HID headlights were a $1K repair after continuous ON over 200K miles.
My 2013 Sport AWD with 101,000 miles has been freakin awesome. Bought it with 15,000 miles on it. Only issues have been a bad parking switch sensor and the serpentine belt broke. Both fixed myself. I have upgraded the exhaust (Corksport), added roof rails and a roof basket, aftermarket headlights, aftermarket suspension, front sway bar, some bad ass breaks and new wheels with offroad tires. It's underpowered but I love the gas mileage. Its so reliable driving through snow I cannot believe it sometimes. I've driven through 3' of snow in blizzards here in Colorado and no problem. My next vehicle will be a CX-5 100%.
I've had my 2015 Mazda CX5 for 9 years and the only major problem I've had is the MAF sensor. My car would turn over maybe once and not start. I disconnected the MAF sensor, and the car started fine. Do yourself a favor and try that if you're having a similar issue. Also, use OEM parts. I've heard too many complaints about cheaper sensors.
250k on mine. Everything original. Trailer and camper 10% of the mileage. 20k oil change Mobil 1 long range. Awesome car. Live in quebec canada so a good brake cleaning every spring. That's it.
Thank you! In May 2024, there's a 2016 CX-5 Grand Touring for sale near me with about 150,000 miles on it. Less than $13,000 sounds good. But I wonder about reliability at this age / mileage. I will definitely mention this areas of concern to the dealer in the morning!
We had the dreaded headlight flicker and soon went fully dead. We ended up getting a fix it ticket. Took it to the dealership and they quoted $1000 per light but luckily mazda did a recall for them and we got two brand new headlights installed for free 😀
I’ve had this car for 2016 and this guy is spot on. I’ve had all of these problems with the cx5 2016. How did he know. Also the headlights were replaced free via recall. All that said. This car has been amazing. I have no complaints about it even though I think there should have been a windshield recall. It’s a super common problem. I know three people with this car. All have broken windshields
We have a 2013 and a 2015 CX-5 Grand Tourings and have had none of these problems. We HAVE run into the nightmare of the exhaust pipe rotting out about 6" up on the exhaust manifold (at the hanger weld). Got to love this 2 piece cat setup! The repair is going to cost us $2000!!!
2016 AWD automatic with 2.2 diesel: very reliable up to about 80k miles, then 1) transmission started to change down at too high a road speed while descending hills on engine over-run, and when it did so, lots of warning lights came on all at once, and braking and gear changes became very rough and jerky. Everything re-set to normal when you turned off the engine, and re-started. Happened more and more frequently. Cure (so far): gear change module software re-installed. 2) windscreen wipers suddenly died (front only). The fuse was OK, and fault diagnosed by Mazda as front body control module, and by local motor engineer (as opposed to parts fitter) as a relay sticking within the FBCM. This was a dealer recall issue on the Mazda 3, but not on the CX-5, though they have since fitted different relays, or so I'm told. Mazda main agent claimed to know nothing about the fault on the CX-5, but knew far too much about the symptoms without being told, so I don't believe them. No FBCM in the UK at the time of asking, and no idea what delivery time might be. Cure (so far): when the wipers stop working, open the bonnet, get out, open the fuse box, and give the FBCM a series of sharp taps with your knuckle until the relay unsticks. 3) engine warning light came on and car went into limp-home mode. Fault reader indicated excessive engine oil temperature and other issues. Oil and filter change (not overdue by any means) didn't cure it for long, and it came back a couple of months later. Cure (so far): drop sump, replace oil pickup strainer which was clogged with carbon, also replace assorted gaskets, pipework &c. Anecdotally, these engines appear to be very, very intolerant of short journeys, and I've been told that they need motorway / dual carriageway blasts of 20 minutes above 2000 rpm at least weekly to prevent fouling. I have been advised (by a former service training manager for a major manufacturer) to add Forté oil flush or similar a month or so before scheduled oil changes.
I have a 2016 CX-5 Touring that I bought new. It's by far the best car I've ever owned. I haven't had any problems whatsoever with it in almost 6 years. All I've done is oil changes and tire rotations every 5k miles. Also replaced the factory battery at about 5 years. As for what was listed in this video: 1) My touring luckily didn't come with LED headlights. 2) My windshield has never cracked. I've heard its mostly a problem occuring on the GT's because the electronic sensor is pressing against the top middle of the windshield causing stress. 3) My liftgage pistons never had a problem. However they did get replaced free under a Mazda recall. 4) Haven't had any brake problems yet. Still on the originals. 5) Haven't had any problems with the electronic parking break.
Have you still haven’t any problems with your cx-5 yet? I want to buy a 2013 Cx-5 but the only one I can afford for 7k has 141,500 miles so I’m worried that it won’t last too long!! I would like to use it for 4-5 years with minimal mechanical issues
@@georgelopez9517 No I have not had any problems with it to this date. How ever I have had this vehicle since it was new so I always made sure that I did the routine maintenance. I have also always used full synthetic oil.
I guess I've been lucky. I have an 8 year old , 2016 CX-5 and haven't had any of these issues or any others. The brakes are original and they have 96k miles. I drive it like I stole it so I am baffled too!
I did have to replace 2 windshield, just replaced it with a non-Mazda windshield no problem since. I also had to replace infotainments system. 2016 172,000 miles
I have 2014 cx5. In northern latitudes with lots of snow rust will begin to form around fuel pump on the fuel tank. This causes the gasoline vapor to escape into the cabin or around the rear of the vehicle. Mazda tech says it’s an issue with first ten cx5s but currently no recalls to fix the issue. Cost to fix is 3k. FYI
These are a great Era CX-5 Common ones I've found are Brake switch going bad causing no start High pressure fuel pump failure stored dtc p0192 and rough idle Clunk in the front end due to loose wiper cowling Power seat cable noise (not motor) Other than that basic maintenance
My 2013 has 179,928miles and it runs fine even has the original spark plugs I'm also surprised he didn't talk about the accessory parking sensor that doesn't work sometimes which means your radio stays on when you cut off
Yup, I replaced mine myself. Took me a while to figure out the issue. Part was like 50 bucks and took 15 minutes to put in. Dealership quoted me $400 lol. RUclips for the win 🏆
Lol I use a screwdriver. I place it next to the stick shift, put it on park first then next to it the screwdriver and turns off without a problem. Unlike before I had to go back and forth back and forth until the car realized it was in park and be able to turn it off 🤷♂️
Have a 2015 CX-5, at about 80K miles (manual parking brake lever) I heard a noise when getting off the highway. Stopped and felt all rims and the right rear was much hotter. Had calipers locked up due to corrosion and had the rear two replaced. I took off the front pads and cleaned them up and made sure the the contacts and pins were well lubricated so it didn't happen in the front. No other problems so far except I am surprised how much rust is underneath and on the engine bolts.
I have a 2017 Mazda CX-5 it has only 45,100 miles on it. The stereo system computer screen sometimes will turn on and off by itself constantly until I switch from the (Settings Display) screen. Other than that, I like Mazda.
In the uk I own a 2014 cx5 and so far none of these problems have occurred. The only issue was at less than 4years old and 35000 miles the heater failed to warm up. A new unit at the cost of 700£ was fitted and apparently this was a common fault in this country. Mazda have not seen fit to assist in any way with the cost of this but have upgraded the heating unit on later models so are aware of the problem.
I have a 2016 CX-5 GP with about 70K miles it, and fortunately I have not had any of these problems (knock on wood). Only issues have been the things I caused myself, like i broke the fancy passenger side mirror glass (and that would have been costly to replace, but I replaced it myself, and so was less than $100), and other normal maintenance.
The biggest issue for this vehicle (I have a 2013 Touring AWD) is the engine going into "limp mode". I just changed out the spark plugs and now it's even worse. I'm going to try replacing the ignition coils next. Praying that works. This serious problem is all over Mazda blogs/discussion threads. I'm praying that I don't have to replace the PCM. You'll be driving, and with no warning, the engine light comes on and you stop accelerating. I could keep the car up to 40 mh as long as I pressed down on the gas, but as soon as I let up, the car slowed down and stopped. I could rev the engine in Park, but when put in Drive, it happened again. Other warning lights that come on at the same time are the TPS OFF, Master Warning, and Tire Warning. No recall for this problem, of course. 🙄
Current CX-5 owner. Did not experience any of these issues. However, earlier 2013-14 models like mine had also: 1. Hood vibration issue. Not dangerous or a real problem, but very visible for the driver. Fixed after the cowl was replaced. 2. Driver side mirror excessive vibrations, especially with wind. Mostly fixed in mine, still a little bit of vibration left There were some limited reports of issues with the automatic transmission, also in 15 and maybe 16 model years: 1. Whine which could deteriorate into an actual mechanical breakdown and full replacement 2. "Christmas tree" light-up of all indicators in the car and the transmission going into limp mode Still, overall fairly reliable vehicle
I have a 2016 CX5 and the valve cover gasket has failed at 70k which caused oil to go in spark plug socket #1. Also there is a hairline crack in the aluminum engine block nearby the alternator belt area.
Let me add one problem on the Mazda CX 5. I have a 2014 CX 5 GT, everytime I parked the car on the different ground level and all doors aren't easy to open or to shut. It looks that the shell isn't rigid enough to hold the car when park the different ground level. Overall it's a good and excellent car.
Only ever had issues with rear brakes. Took it back to dealer 3 times for squeaky brakes. They always told me nothing was wrong. I finally bought good aftermarket rotors and pads and put them on myself , problem solved. I'd buy another one
With my caliper, and rotor disc then I always make sure to clean thoroughly behind disc and rotor. Making sure there is also rust primer on calipers, after l use copper wire brush for sanding them down with eye shield and mask on. It is a tough job, but respraying coats on caliper with primer anti rust agent and blue UHD colour really make caliper long last against the wear and tear coming from old to highly dangerous brake dust when scraping off. Ionised water is just quick tip on cleaning the rust off before priming, spraying and painting to lubing back on.
Me too! At 125,00 miles on original brake pads, I was a little concerned I hadn't had any indication of needing to change and rotors looked good. Took it to my shop for them to check, and they said I was still good to go for another 20,000. Unbelievable.
We bought a 2014 CX5 new and our windshield actually cracked on the bottom. I eventually stopped and I haven't replaced it yet. Liftgate pistons were recalled so they replaced them. And I'm actually replacing the front and rear pad and rotors now. 57k miles on the car, easy driving, very good car. The only electrical issue I've had was the break switch, under the pedal, that interloks with the push button start had stuck. Easy replacement and it was an 11 dollar part.
I'm surprised the A/C Blower problem did not make the list. I had to change mine twice in less than 5 years on my 2016. The problem starts with the blower making noise for a few months, then just quits working all together. So basically you will need a new blower every 2.5 years. The first time this happened, I searched on the net and found that it was common problem on this generation. The Mazda 3 also has the same problem since it uses the same blower. The CX5 2017+ uses a different blower, so hopefully this is not a problem on those models. Other than the blower, the car is great and I would by another one (Newer generation) again.
My mechanic said it's an easy fix, he just bypassed the internal selector to fresh air all the time and it worked for 7 years. $65.00 was all. The only issue is when your behind a big truck and you have to huff it's fumes.
Unfortunately, I can not say the same for Mazda reliability. Based on all the information that I could find at the time, the 2015 Mazda CX-5 seems like a winner in the area of performance, style and dependability, so I purchased one. Outside of a stiff ride, blind spots, and the uncomfortable seats, I was good with the car (until I hit the 74k mark). For those who don’t know, there is a service bulletin on 2014-2016 CX-5 regarding defective transaxle units. In a certain serial number range (most of them) the casing of the trans was improperly machined which leaves a critical bearing misaligned. This misalignment causes the bearing to prematurely wear and fail in approximately 70-90k miles. Mine was one of those affected by this issue. Luckily, I still had 3 months left to the power train warranty otherwise I would be paying for the manufacturers incompetence (approx $5k). I am still waiting on the back ordered new unit, but will probably sell it the vehicle the moment the repair is complete. Not impressed!
Correct. The problem is the differential assembly. I went down under my car while changing a snapped coil spring and saw my differential casing with cracks. Like metal cracks, no leaks yet so im good but im like wtf why would a very big metal bulb have cracks. This supposed to outlast any part of the car and yeah when i saw the tsb. Im like wtf man. Also i checked the part, its $1200 American dollars brandnew, so perhaps $2000 all in all with labor. I checked for used parts and a pre owned costs $1000 canadian. I bought my 2015 used and yeah this is will be out of pocket, im out of the 60,000 warranty or 5 year whichever comes first as im on the 80,000 mileague now.
I’ve had the following issues on my 2014 CX-5 w/ 52k miles on the clock as of today: 1) MAF failure w/ check engine light 2) Windshield stress fracture crack 3) Both rear door inner carrier assemblies broke/cracked/failed at the window regulator bolt attach points, which causes the window regulator bolts to pull through the plastic carrier assembly piece. With those bolts pulled through the plastic, the window regulator no longer has the contact with the assembly that it needs to fully close the window, and it causes the window to drop open approx 1 inch. If rolled down & back up, the window will continue to fail to fully close until a new carrier assembly is replaced. The carrier assembly is about $50 from a Mazda dealer. 4) Vehicle is greatly affected by sidewinds and moves noticeably side to side even in moderate sidewinds(literally seems as if this vehicle had zero windtunnel testing) 5) excessive hood fluttering at highway speeds(see windtunnel testing comment above) 6) excessive side mirror vibration(see windtunnel testing comments above) 7) Sirius satellite radio became inoperable
I have the 2016.5... the sales guy said they re made the 2016 half way through, due2 some issues... I thankfully havnt had any of these problems, at 118k. My back brakes only in reverse do squick, but Mazda said the brakes r fine, was just dust.. but the noise came back.
@@1AAuto just reached 175k miles on my Mazda cx -5 changed the break pads at 135k now at 175k whenever I break the whole steering wheel shakes hard and the front of the tires vibrates like crazy just woke up this morning and the tread on half of the front tires is gone like wooosh ... can you give me a hand ? What do you think is the problem is it the rotors ?
+CcOLaGeN We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I've got all these problems. The rear brake burning stuck same side two times. The cars been good otherwise the 4 years we've had it but when I hear the cost of the parts I think it's time to trade it in.
Liftgate pistons take 10 mins to replace. My #1 issue, GT should have a full size spare with alloy Rim, remote start and a mechanical eBrake. I never put the ebrake on.
Have you still haven’t any problems with your cx-5 yet? I want to buy a 2013 Cx-5 but the only one I can afford for 7k has 141,500 miles so I’m worried that it won’t last too long!! I would like to use it for 4-5 years with minimal mechanical issues
I have a 2014 with 187,000 km. It's been wonderful aside from some minor issues. Two rear strut mounts and just yesterday, I discovered the right rear brake caliper was leaking out the emergency brake lever.
Nice informative video. Thank you. My problem is with my 2013 CX5 "Current MPG" readings. Sometimes on a level road at 40 mph, my current mpg reads 12.5 mpg then later it'll jump to its normal 52 mpg. Can you assist me?
Were these fixed on the 2nd gen? I have a 2019 CX-5. Also my passenger mirror assembly motor is broken and I have a schedule to get that replaced for free. The motor that moves just the mirror is fine, it's the whole side mirror assembly that is broken. Is there any way to turn off the auto side mirror fold thing when locking the car?
One thing that should be added is a dying battery can cause all sorts of issues from decreased fuel economy to the emergency braking system not working to the transmission shifting weird when cold. I replaced the battery in mine because it wouldn't start one day. That was a year ago and it's been perfect.
Not only can your electronic parking brake engage due to failure, but you can't use your emergency brake in case of emergency because there's no way to modulate it like you can with a real emergency brake.
We have noisy power driver seat, known issue. Replaced the parking sensor because some rubber part wore out and it couldn't tell when it was in park, replaced pistons. But fine vehicle for the most part
You stated that the rear brakes tend to wear out fairly quick. And so obviously the pads need to be replaced. But then you also said that if you change the pads, to change the rotors too......why? I've had quite a few cars in my lifetime and have found that my rear rotors will typically last close to, or beyond 100,000 miles. If the CX-5 pads wear out "early", say at 40,000 miles, why would I change the rotors?
2014 Touring - I've done rotors and pads all the way around at 70k...otherwise no issues except a rattle in the rear hatch due to a loose nut falling off the rear spoiler down into the hatch that I can't locate.

Is the noise issue mostly only in the rear due to the rust on the hardware? Did a brake job and still hear a noise.

Was thinking about getting a 2013 CX-5 but I'd prefer a manual transmission because those CVT things worried me to death

MAZDA FIXED MY LIGHTS FOR FREE EVEN WHEN I PURCHASED CAR SECOND HAND - This is the company I am willing to get in love with.
Own a 2015 CX5 grand touring with 65k miles. been absolutely rock solid, zero issues.
I’ve got 126k on my 2015. Great vehicle!
2015 75k miles, so far brake rotors, front struts, serp belt + tensioner. Not too bad. Fog lights come aimed uselessly low but can easily be readjusted.
impressive how reliable this thing is
So in other words the CX-5 is a very reliable vehicle.
Loving my Mazda CX-5 with new tires
they are but the dealers always want to sell you nonsense like liquid flushes or unnecessary scans
Yes. I bought mine brand new in April 2017, 118k miles now (yea, horrible, but im in transportation business)... never had any issues, or had to fix anything besides normal maintenance (brakes, tune up, battery..etc)
Yes it is, I have the 2016 gt and it's amazing, I never liked a car like this one before, so fun to drive and it still looking good for a 5 years vehicule, other than regular maintenance, only the brake was done on it and The headlight changed on a recall
The only downside it's that the drl LEDs replacement are weaker than the OEM.
Made in Japan! I own a 16 cx5 and that is why I was not nervous stepping into my used 2016 6. Great vehicles forged crank forged rods aluminum pistons and a smooth transmission. Like I texted MADE IN JAPAN!!😍
My '16 CX-5 has been flawless. Zero complaints !!!!!!!!
Same here
Love my mazda cx-5!!! I watched this video thinking you were going to talk about an engine problem or something serious like that, but then I remembered you were talking about a mazda ;)
+Anna W. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
THAT’S IT?? That is a great SUV and I owned 2 of those models and I never experienced any of those problems, the only issue I’ve had was with the infotainment system. GREAT vehicle!! I purchased a CX-30 now.
I've had the 1st gen CX-5 since 2013:
1- I got the standard with no day time running lights
2- Never had this windshield problem
3- Never had the liftgate problem
4- I remember only changing my breaks literally once only because they were squeeking
5- I have a crank break :)
Actual problem I had:
1- I had damaged the front radiator for the A/C (I think a stone hit it or something) which cause the compressor to fail due because there was no A/C gas(Feron)
2- The mass airflow sensor failed which cause some weird issues and random car turnoff, replacing it was the fix
3- There is a switch inside the gear changer that detects when you are in P. Now I need to push the gear lever towards the P because it wont get detected properly and allow the car to turn off, Its a cheap part you need to replace.
I think that's all the problems I had.
I have 195000 Kilometers on it
+Ali modz Thanks for the feedback!
I have mazda cx 2013 AWD. I encountered the same problem as what you had....
1. The Mass air flow sensor issue which was replaced at the mazda service center for approx $120 for parts and labour
2. The gear switch sensor that cost $200 in the mazda service center for parts and labour
3. The righthand side mirror motor folding issue.
Mazda 2013 CX5 AWD at 158, 000 kms
1. I am now having daytime issues fliking light on one side.

5. -
When you say standard what do you mean by that? I was thinking you had a manual transmission but after you're mentioning the park I'm figuring it was not a manual transmission.
i have a 2013 GT CX5,
problem free, have had zero issues .
love this vehicle 😎
Both the DRL issues and the liftgate struts are the subject of recalls, so don’t pay any money when you can get it fixed for free at the dealer!
189,000 miles and have pretty much only changed the oil and done reg maint.
This guy even gives sound effects, bravo!
My 2014 Mazda CX5 has 180'000KM and so far..... I have changed the shock, front arm and breakes.... No problem so far! Love my CX5 :)
Electronic Parking Brake - a expensive and complicated solution to a non existent problem.
There are two major issues hitting the early CX-5 1st Generations with a 2.0L:
1) Exhaust manifold failure. Mazda welded about 8" of exhaust PIPE to the end of the manifold and welded the first hanger here. It is through that weld these are rotting through. Repairing this requires replacement of the exhaust manifold (an $1800 part IF you can find one) and a very long repair (drop the engine),
2) The power steering motor failing.
My moms 2013 only problem that was taken care of due to recall was the lift gate piston over all 10/10 reliable
250k on mine. Everything original. Trailer and camper 10% of the mileage. 20k oil change Mobil 1 long range. Awesome car. Live in quebec canada so a good brake cleaning every spring. That's it.
Live in QC too and indeed the brake cleaning come spring time is MANDATORY!
My 2014 has over 100k now and has only needed tires and front pads.
The lift gate struts were done in a recall.
Have one since 2013 and never have have a single problem. Just stick to service schedule, and your car will be good.
Love my 2016. No issues aside from general maintenance in 8 years.🥰
So no mechanical problems 🤔 engine and transmission are perfect ?
2016 AWD automatic with 2.2 diesel: very reliable up to about 80k miles, then
1) transmission started to change down at too high a road speed while descending hills on engine over-run, and when it did so, lots of warning lights came on all at once, and braking and gear changes became very rough and jerky.
Had to spend 800 on repairs this year on my Mazda cx5 2016. New discs, rear shock bracket snapped.
How many miles?
I have a 2016 CX-5 Touring that I bought new. It's by far the best car I've ever owned. I haven't had any problems whatsoever with it in almost 6 years. All I've done is oil changes and tire rotations every 5k miles. Also replaced the factory battery at about 5 years. As for what was listed in this video:
1) My touring luckily didn't come with LED headlights.
+Cabo Wabo Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
I have a 2013 to this day. It has never had anything more than routine maintenance done. It is a tank.
Have you still haven’t any problems with your cx-5 yet? I want to buy a 2013 Cx-5 but the only one I can afford for 7k has 141,500 miles so I’m worried that it won’t last too long!! I would like to use it for 4-5 years with minimal mechanical issues
@@WasteMyTime- It's just the 4 cylinder skyactiv
@@georgelopez9517 No I have not had any problems with it to this date. How ever I have had this vehicle since it was new so I always made sure that I did the routine maintenance. I have also always used full synthetic oil.
is it petrol
Drive a 2016 cx5 sport twenty 8 thousand 99 miles,, runs like a champ👊😎
I guess I've been lucky. I have an 8 year old , 2016 CX-5 and haven't had any of these issues or any others. The brakes are original and they have 96k miles. I drive it like I stole it so I am baffled too!
I did have to replace 2 windshield, just replaced it with a non-Mazda windshield no problem since. I also had to replace infotainments system. 2016 172,000 miles
Very useful. I’m looking at buying a used one.
2016 CX-5 GT FWD Soul Red
So there is no way of fixing the windshield problem other than replacing the glass?
I have 2014 cx5. In northern latitudes with lots of snow rust will begin to form around fuel pump on the fuel tank. This causes the gasoline vapor to escape into the cabin or around the rear of the vehicle. Mazda tech says it’s an issue with first ten cx5s but currently no recalls to fix the issue. Cost to fix is 3k. FYI
These are a great Era CX-5
Common ones I've found are
Brake switch going bad causing no start
High pressure fuel pump failure stored dtc p0192 and rough idle
Clunk in the front end due to loose wiper cowling
Power seat cable noise (not motor)
Other than that basic maintenance
My 2013 has 179,928miles and it runs fine even has the original spark plugs
I'm also surprised he didn't talk about the accessory parking sensor that doesn't work sometimes which means your radio stays on when you cut off
+James Thanks for the feedback!
In europe the biggest problem is the EGR & DPF in the 2.2 Diesel. If you remove them and decarbonise the engine then you have a great vehicle.
My 2016 CX5 has 122k miles on it. The transmission died at 40k but was replaced under warranty. Has been solid otherwise.
Current CX-5 owner. Did not experience any of these issues.
However, earlier 2013-14 models like mine had also:
1. Hood vibration issue. Not dangerous or a real problem, but very visible for the driver. Fixed after the cowl was replaced.
2. Driver side mirror excessive vibrations, especially with wind. Mostly fixed in mine, still a little bit of vibration left
There were some limited reports of issues with the automatic transmission, also in 15 and maybe 16 model years:
1. Whine which could deteriorate into an actual mechanical breakdown and full replacement
2. "Christmas tree" light-up of all indicators in the car and the transmission going into limp mode
Still, overall fairly reliable vehicle
I have a 2016 CX5 and the valve cover gasket has failed at 70k which caused oil to go in spark plug socket #1. Also there is a hairline crack in the aluminum engine block nearby the alternator belt area.
Glad my 2015 cx 5 has non of these. No electric emergency brake, no daytime running lights, my brakes wear evenly, tailgate lift shocks work fine.
2016.5 Mazda cx-5. 60.000 km.
My only problem now (high pressure fuel pomp), $1500 part and labour. Fixed under warranty cover. 🙏
LoL Man these dealerships are a rip off. Most likely under $500 at a reputable auto shop.
I have a 2016 cx5 with 63,000 thousand miles and have zero issues.
I’m considering purchasing a CX5 for the first time.
+jaylosix Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
It's the Mazda pads, they suck. I switched to Akebono.
If you in doubt, and feel you cant change pads due to worry that you can't get them on then never change you pads, only get that done through service.
I own my cx5 8 years without any problems
Me too! At 125,00 miles on original brake pads, I was a little concerned I hadn't had any indication of needing to change and rotors looked good. Took it to my shop for them to check, and they said I was still good to go for another 20,000. Unbelievable.
@@mrleger45 I got 100k miles on my mazda 3 brakes.
@@mrleger45 wow!! Had both my front and rear changed this year, front around 65K, rear about 70k and I thought that was a long time.!
@@mrleger45 ...so you only drive up hill ?
We bought a 2014 CX5 new and our windshield actually cracked on the bottom. I eventually stopped and I haven't replaced it yet. Liftgate pistons were recalled so they replaced them. And I'm actually replacing the front and rear pad and rotors now. 57k miles on the car, easy driving, very good car. The only electrical issue I've had was the break switch, under the pedal, that interloks with the push button start had stuck. Easy replacement and it was an 11 dollar part.
Been driving mine for a few years and it's real reliable but constantly driving over bloody nails!
So 🤔 no issues with the engine and transmission?
I'm surprised the A/C Blower problem did not make the list. I had to change mine twice in less than 5 years on my 2016. The problem starts with the blower making noise for a few months, then just quits working all together. So basically you will need a new blower every 2.5 years. The first time this happened, I searched on the net and found that it was common problem on this generation. The Mazda 3 also has the same problem since it uses the same blower. The CX5 2017+ uses a different blower, so hopefully this is not a problem on those models. Other than the blower, the car is great and I would by another one (Newer generation) again.
+ilmjcxj Thanks for the feedback!
I own a cx 5 no problem like this
My mechanic said it's an easy fix, he just bypassed the internal selector to fresh air all the time and it worked for 7 years.
Hi, do you have a link to further info on this please? Was yours auto or manual? Many thanks
I’ve had the following issues on my 2014 CX-5 w/ 52k miles on the clock as of today:
1) MAF failure w/ check engine light
2) Windshield stress fracture crack
3) Both rear door inner carrier assemblies broke/cracked/failed at the window regulator bolt attach points, which causes the window regulator bolts to pull through the plastic carrier assembly piece.
4) Vehicle is greatly affected by sidewinds and moves noticeably side to side even in moderate sidewinds(literally seems as if this vehicle had zero windtunnel testing)
5) excessive hood fluttering at highway speeds(see windtunnel testing comment above)
6) excessive side mirror vibration(see windtunnel testing comments above)
7) Sirius satellite radio became inoperable
I have the 2016.5... the sales guy said they re made the 2016 half way through, due2 some issues... I thankfully havnt had any of these problems, at 118k.
My back brakes only in reverse do squick, but Mazda said the brakes r fine, was just dust.. but the noise came back.
Have you heard of any carbon build up on intake valves due to carbon build up on the skyactiv engines?
Boot straps are on recall, rear calipers are on recall. Other things are normal maintanance.
My cx5 has 175000 on it only has needed brakes and sparkplugs

Have you still haven’t any problems with your cx-5 yet? I want to buy a 2013 Cx-5 but the only one I can afford for 7k has 141,500 miles so I’m worried that it won’t last too long!! I would like to use it for 4-5 years with minimal mechanical issues
There's a recall for the driving light, free fix, call madza.
I have a 2014 with 187,000 km. It's been wonderful aside from some minor issues. Two rear strut mounts and just yesterday, I discovered the right rear brake caliper was leaking out the emergency brake lever.
Do you have engine problems?
@@irvingotgame5258 No engine issues at all.
Nice informative video. Thank you. My problem is with my 2013 CX5 "Current MPG" readings. Sometimes on a level road at 40 mph, my current mpg reads 12.5 mpg then later it'll jump to its normal 52 mpg. Can you assist me?
So why didn't they do a recall on the headlight stuff? Of course I couldn't care less if my running lights weren't working doesn't bother me at all.
Were these fixed on the 2nd gen? I have a 2019 CX-5. Also my passenger mirror assembly motor is broken and I have a schedule to get that replaced for free. The motor that moves just the mirror is fine, it's the whole side mirror assembly that is broken. Is there any way to turn off the auto side mirror fold thing when locking the car?
if i recall, only the 16 has the electric brake
Excellent review mate, learnt a lot about fine details on the potential shortcomings and breakdowns.

One thing that should be added is a dying battery can cause all sorts of issues from decreased fuel economy to the emergency braking system not working to the transmission shifting weird when cold. I replaced the battery in mine because it wouldn't start one day. That was a year ago and it's been perfect.
+Robert NES816 Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
Has anybody had any problems with starting their cx-5 or battery issues
Have 2014 model no problem for the engine zero
Only for the single auto side light
Would you recommend the 2018-20 or newest model?
