Mazda6 / CX5 Park Shifter Switch / sensor Repair -Car stays on after turning off, won't shut off

- Does your Mazda6 or CX-5 stay on (radio and displays stay on) after turning the car off?
Then the issue is with your shifter switch. The car won't recognize that you have shifted you car into "Park" and it won't turn the car off. It results in keeping the radio and display on and tells you to put the shifter in park even though you can see on the dash and shifter indicator light is in Park.
This video shows you how to replace the shifter switch and how to repair the existing one so you don't need to spend any money on the part itself.
This repair applies to both Mazda6 and CX-5...from 2013 to 2016 models I believe. If you want to replace the part, it is part:

Did the job in under 30 minutes, no need to remove all the side covers if you use an offset screwdriver. Just remove the beverage cover and the shifter cover and the side access you have to the switch is enough for the offset screwdriver. Plug and play.

Thank you! Our 2014 CX-5 was a little different. The two screws in the rear of the console are on the sides underneath decorative covers. You have to move the front seats far forward to get to them. The mar-free way to remove the decorative covers is by shoving the edge of a credit card under either the top or bottom edge (not the sides), and pulling outwards. Other than that, everything was the same, and your instructions helped me a LOT. Thanks so much!
This problem is ridiculous and annoying. They need to recall these vehicles for this problem. I had the dealership fix the problem but after 2 months it started doing the same thing. Other mechanics warranty their work but not the Mazda dealership. I love my car but having to turn it off and on multiple times has me hating it. And hating Mazda, even though I love my Miata.

that switch only lets the car know that it can now shut down..
i would remove the stuff and see what is causing the shifter not to shift...that doesn't make sense to me.

that is when you depress it with a key to unlock the shifter, when you remove the key, it pushes the tab back up to lock the shifter
Why would they put a soft rubber on a part thats going to get alot of contact...seems really stupid. My car has 112k miles and ive noticed it happen a few times over the past few years. Approx how many miles are many of these failing I wonder? Ill do the repair If I have to since the part still actually works.
my car started close to 90+k...it varies, long trips vs short trips. must be a function of temperatures of location and how many times it got pushed on...
Our 2014 Mazda 6 had it happen once every 10 trips and we are only at 49,000 miles. It does seem to matter how often you shift into park more than the mileage.
@@Whaderder Yea alot of city miles more shifts into park than a all highway car I guess. I did the replace no issues works fine now.

@@footprintsinconc Btw I ended up just using a piece of double sided tape folded over the top rubber section. This was held in place with some thread looped tightly around the tape. It's only been a few days but I think it will hold.

Great video, helped me a ton when repairing my wife's car! Found myself wondering, though, why in the world they did this in the first place. There are many better ways to implement this simple function - shifter is in park - that don't require moving parts, wear items, springs, etc. A simple, cheap, reliable optical sensor would have been a far better choice.
doing repairs over time, makes me feel like i want to start a consulting firm where they can ask the average DIY joe: what are you thoughts on this?

Good vid, but you can spare yourself half that work and dont remove the tunnel, just pop out the 3x centre bits around the knob, then the one around the AT handle, and the further one and pop out one of the side pins o the side plastics. You can wiggle your way around things there, just pop open whichever plastics you need on the side you work on [for R hand drive the switch is on the right.]
Good points. All the parts are inter twined into one another and to avoid breaking tabs, this is the safest way.
I'm sure that if you are an advanced DIYer, you can get away with that but for beginners, this is probably the most safest.
@@footprintsinconc It wasnt easy, so definitely not for most people, as you have to pry things while trying to get the switch part out. But saved me half day.

This helped me so much! THANK YOU. HOWEVER, when replacing the shift lock spring back I lost the spring. you said that finding a replacement for those may be easy, can you tell me where I can find that??? also, how dangerous is it to drive without it! I replaced the tab but not the spring. :( SOS
i went back and listened to what i said...it sounded confusing.
i meant, that if the spring fell, the area is not wide open, so you should be able to find the spring. there aren't any cracks or crevices that if the spring fell in side, you won't be able to get it.
check under the seat rails and see if it's there.
listen at 7:43, this is needed when you are trying to shift without the key ....there is a tab on the display, that is removed, you stick a key in there, it pushes on the tab, allowing you to shift the car into neutral or what ever as needed.
thinking out loud, when you push down, it should engeage and allow you to shift but that part won't spring back up. so the car might still be able to be shifted even without a key.
test it out and see what happens.

I used tin snips to cut a piece from an old tin can to make the repair. It will probably last longer than if I bought a new part from the dealer.

Yep mine has the same issue Mazda charges 300 for fixing it and there are tons of people reporting it and they dont do a recall.

Thank you for the video! $69 fix and could see the problem with the old one as soon as I got it out. FYI, after getting the first console piece out, I was lucky enough to be able to fit my hand underneath the gear shift plastic piece and undo the 4 snap tabs by hand instead of prying a screw driver in that most fragile section. I didn't think of it at the time. its just a thin sheet metal piece bent over the existing rubber piece. added crazy glue and baking soda to stiffen and adhere the metal piece to the rubber.
Seriously, you should do this for a living. Your attention to detail and how you explained where the tabs were, how the spring went, etc. we're so helpful. I have broken many a trim tab over the years but not today! This video was greatly appreciated.

I made the mistake of buying a new one. I bought a new one and it lasted a month. I fixed the old one instead and it works perfect now. What I did is I cut a metal car fastener just above the round hole. I then pried the U shaped metal piece wide enough to go over the end of the park switch. I then glued it onto the park switch. Reassembled. The metal peace just extends a little further inward to the gear shifter. Hope this tip helps! Best of luck.

I know it's an old video but I think I found an easier way to fix this rather than gluing something back onto it. When you take the switch out just rip the rubber tip off which leaves a hole. Through the hole put a small cable tie making sure the cable tie knob is where the groove was. Then wrap another cable tie around the base to keep the knob facing out. No need to glue anything on.

I'm cheap, so I took the switch apart after I got it out. Thought about 3D printing that worn piece. Turns out it was a little too intricate for my CAD skills. So I took off that little rubber cap and put a blob of JB weld on it sanded it down nicely and reinstalled, has been working great.

This flaw showed up on our 2014 Mazda 6 around 50k miles -- pretty disappointing. I haven't replaced the switch yet (88k), but every single time we shut down we have to slam the shifter left before hitting the off switch. Thanks for the video -- but I'm putting this headache-of-a-repair off as long as possible.
i put it off for the longest time until that rubber piece no longer had any resistance left...then fixed it.
i did this video so that you can see its easy to fix and not worth the time we struggled to get the car to turn off...find some spare time and fix it to avoid it failing when you are swamped :)
I just followed your steps with my 2014 Mazda 6 Grand Touring vehicle and was able to fix my existing shifter switch with a slight modification and I no longer have to start and stop my car (multiple times), jam the shifter in park, until it finally registers and switches off my "all" of my car's accessories. This will save my car's new Interstate battery. You saved me some serious cash. Thanks!! All the best!!

Thanks for the great demonstrating video. I just made the moving part stronger by removing the damaged rubber boot and inserting a short screw inside the plastic hole. There is a small hole that you will see when you pull off the damaged rubber boot. The screw head now acts as the actuator in contact with the shifter. Put some strong adhesive glue to the small screw that you put on to stay there for life. Working flawless.

A great thorough video. I have the "ignition on" problem with my 2017 CX-9. It's very annoying and sporadic - once every few months or sometimes 2 times in a day, ugh. I hope this fixes it. Thanks

The auto on this video may be a Mazda 6 . The same switch on a Mazda CX-5 interference removal is much simpler.

I couldn't finish my question below. In this video between 9:02 and 9:12 you do not show how to disconnect the wiring plug from the part. This is where we are stumped. We have the old part out and new part to replace it but cannot figure how to disconnect the wiring without braking the part or plug! Can you some how show how that is done??
did you take the part off and then try to unplug the plug or are you trying to unplug it before removng the part?
you need to remove the part first...then flip it upwards and then you can see a tab that you'll depress to remove the plug
see like at 19 minutes and you'll see how to remove the part.

Thank you for this very helpful video. I held the shifter to the left before turning the vehicle off for almost 2 years and was fine doing that. My vehicle started having issues with the computer and I took it in for a diagnosis- they came back with voltage draw from the battery because of the shifter. I don't fully understand why still, but that was the error codes. I decided to replace the battery and this shifter piece instead of paying $900 to the dealership for just replacing the shifter. I followed the video to a T for my 2014 Mazda 6 Grand Touring. I spent about $50 for the part online (the rubber piece is now a hard plastic piece on the updated component). I replaced it myself in about 3 hours of total work. The hardest part was getting the plastic around the shifter off, I too lightly damaged part of the trim. It was also difficult getting the AC hose back in place for the armrest portion. The key is definitely to go slow and careful, parts can be frustrating but don't be in a rush.

Very well explained and great help to fix this problem. IMO it should have been a recall from MAZDA. Anyway it took me a bit more than an hour to complete the job but it also included the repair of that particular part of the switch. For those that intend to do it, I took a small piece of thin sheet metal. A used condensed milk can will do, cut a small piece, clean it properly, bend it in a U- shape and slide it over the existing rubber piece. Use a tiny bit of 5 min. Epoxy. It worked great for me. Special thanks to the person that took his time for this Video.

i am not sure. I would assume it would be. Does the shifting pattern look the same as you see in the video on your car? when purchasing a part, use your VIN number to verify if the part will fit.

Did anyone have issues with their fob after? I was reading some other comments on a video similar to this one and that seemed to be an issue.
you aren't doing anything to the FOB, just replacing a switch that lets the car know that it's in park

Do this work for a 2006 mazda 6? My radio turn off when i open the door then turn on by itself when i close the door.
This won't be for a 2006. Those models are equipped with a physical car key that you turn on and off to turn the car off....if the park switch doesn't work, then the key won't come out. if the key won't come out because it isn't recognizing that it's in park, then a similar fix is possible if it's the park indicator switch.
In the push button models, we weren't able to shut the car down completely and not able to lock the car because it still doesn't recognize that we are in park.

I did it in under 2 hours. Well done video. I took another step to try unstuck the phone button. It was stuck down which is why the know the stereo wheel didn't move on the screen

Baking soda and crazy glue? How about epoxy glue?
you can use that as well. super glue was way easier and less mess for me.

You know I bought it because it a Japanese car...I like the handling and it's spacious. I would have stayed away from the turbo ones though. Still I'm not happy with how soon this car needed some needed repairs.
But my 05 accord had 235k miles, original water pump, not a single drop of oil leak...not even the valve cover gasket. Just did the alternator and power steering fluid change and ac recharge only. Much more reliable than my 2014 Mazda in comparison.

i don't think so. there could many reasons for it being stuck in in parking. this issue won't keep it stuck in park.
you might need to do a bit of google search to look for what could be causing your particular issue.
How did you undue the electric connector @12:21?
I just used a small flat blade screwdriver put In and lightly was able to disconnect it. Felt the toughest issue I ran Into. Otherwise did job in under 30 mins.
you can use a screw driver...for me if i can remember, they came off pretty easy by hand...might have had to wiggle a couple of them more than others.

The trick is to push the shift lever toward the steering weel and hold it with the right hand while pushing the starter button with the left hand to get the car shut down completely, Ive months doing that. Today I just ordered the part on ebay for $52.
It can also be the neutral safety switch that might be bad and need replacement
in my case it wasn't the neutral switch... watch through the video and you'll see the issue.
the trick didnt work anymore...been doing this for like almost 2 years...the rubber no longer held
