The sigma 16 mm F1.4 is by far my favorite lens. It just makes me feel good when I edit my videos. Great colors AND great portraits AND the creamy background AND the low light performance AND the auto focus AND the great price AND so on............ Definitely one of the lenses you can keep on saying (And) for all it's positive aspects.

I find the 18-105 to be the one I use especially for video. Versatile focal length, great OSS, constant f4, silent zoom and focus, parfocal, variable zoom toggle switch, internal zoom and focus and best of all you can find them for around $600 or even less today. Its not the sharpest lens for stills and its not a Zeiss but the lens represent a good performance and value.

As I use the a6500 most for family gathering photo, the Sigma 56mm F1.4 stays glued to the mount as it makes the best images of people with amazing separation. For all kinds of general street, travel, and event where you want to pull the whole background into view, the Zeiss 16-70mm f4 is the most versatile lens in the e mount aps-c lineup with lightning fast reliable autofocus, and snappy manual zoom to set the frame without having to move yourself through a crowd. Anyone will be super happy and get major use out of either of those but for different reasons. Any of the 30mm prime lenses are a nifty middle ground between the two, but the whole reason you got an interchangable lens camera was to avoid making compromises right?

  • @joshua4578

Not having OSS isn’t too big an issue for videos on a tripod and stills. For me the only thing stopping me from getting this wonderful lens is the large and heavy body. This lens is larger AND heavier than even the 18-135, making it a really difficult buy since I got the A6400 for its portability. I’ve heard so many good things about it though...

  • @WarChortle

I just traded my 16 mm in yesterday for the 24 mm 1.4 I was thinking that When I owned the 12-24 Sony I was almost always at 24mm and 12 was too crazy wide. The 35 was a little too tight so the 16 mm has been great. I traded it in since it's a 24 equivalent and figured if I use my A7III more than my A6500 it would just make more sense to have a lens that works better with both cameras then using the crop lens on a FF body.

Hi Arthur. Based on your recommendations I've got myself sony sel 18-105 and sigma 16mm. I got tired of kit lens 16-50mm as the image quality is just acceptable but enabled me to develop my skills and see what I like the most about photography. I use 18-105 for all-round shooting and sigma 16mm for night/indoors photography. I use sony a6000 that doesn't have optical stabilization and for nighttime photography with Sigma lens at low shutter speed a tripod is a must. Sigma produces beautiful images if you know how to use your camera properly.

Great video, fantastic production quality. I would pick the Sigma 16mm-1.4 for outdoor work, the Sigma 30mm for indoor work (parties, conventions etc.), and the Sony 18-135 for a mixed environment in the daytime. Now that the Sony A6600 has dropped in price, the addition of IBIS makes the Sigma trio even better. I am blown away with the pictures I've been able to capture in low light with the Sigma 16 and 30mm.

Great video! Since I don’t have the Sigma 16, I have to go with my Sony OSS 18-135. My needs are more travel (some on a motorcycle) and outdoor photography related, and since sometimes I don’t have a lot of time to change lenses on the go having the variable focal length is helpful. I have the a6000 and together this is great for lightweight gear. Pair this with the low light capable 35, and I have it all covered.

This is very tempting, but I bought an E mount in the first place to have a lighter, less bulky / conspicuous camera than my full frame. The Sigma 16 1.4 is significantly heavier & bigger than its competitors, so it can hardly be considered to be an ideal E mount lens. The Rokonin 21 1.4 in particular looks like a good alternative (if you don't mind manual focus :) ).

When I got my first A6000 (added a second later) I watched several of your videos. I'm an old film shooter and naturally went to a Nikon D90 for digital until I really got the bug for smaller, but still great image quality. Seeing some of your lense reviews I started researching those primes more. I ended up with this lens. (And the Sony 35/1.8, and the Sony 50/1/8. the Samyang 12MM MF.) Back in my film days I found the Sigma lenses a bit soft and stuck with Nikon and Canon lenses for the most part. So I was a little leery of the name at first. The Sigma 16 is a very different beast from those of old. Nice glass and fast speed. The costs for sharp, contrasty, fast glass in general and especially for wide angle prime glass at 1.4 in those days was quite expensive. So those qualities in a lens like this in the $400 range is not a bad deal. Lug around a Nikon F4s and the 300/f4.0 lens a little and the Sony A6000 with this lens is a pleasant thing.

Another amateur question, I am beginner in videography: why is it better to use constant shutter speed and using ND filter to control brightness instead of let the camera decide the shutter & ISO?
For ISO I understand it is best to keep it at a relative low level to avoid noise in lowlight situations.
What is the effect of keeping shutter at a constant value of 1/2xframerate ?

Arthur, When you take pictures of your son (or any infant) at a close distance, do you disable the red light that the a6400 uses to focus? Or it does not matter.

I was thinking of this exact lens as my only lens also but was worried about portrait distortions... but as you said, you can step back from the subject. I think this lens is the most versatile but portrait shots i feel would be better with the 35mm sigma

Sorry to inform that he was wrong about the portrait, this is not a portrait lens. Sigma 50mm is a true portrait, to some extent 30mm might still do but not this. You will have to take a photograph and then edit by cropping in to make it a portrait perfect frame.

I am having serious flaring issues with my 16mm 1.4. I’m not sure if it’s a defective glass or if wide angle high aperture lenses have the tendency to do that.

Hi Arthur, love your content! Just purchased the Sigma 16mm recently per your recommendation! What do you think of the K&F variable ND filter you talk about in this video, vs the same one that also includes CPL + variable ND?

I just got my 6400 and use the Sony 18-200 from my Nex VG 30. It is a bit heavy but compact, oss and motorised zoom. The kit lens from the 6400 makes the Nex a very handy videocamera with super microphone and handle.

I got the same lens and took it with me to Alaska. I made my first night sky photos with it. Very impressive and inexpensive lens. A must have for Sony APSC cameras.

Purchased this lens shortly after it was released in 2017 i think? and it pretty much lives on my camera.
If i want some creamy B-Roll I switch to the Sony 35mm as i have no other stabilisation atm, just hand held so owning those 2 lenses is a perfect combination!

Does 6400’s video autofocus work now with sigma mc11 adapter and canon zooms?

  • @michaelkhalsa

My favorite is the sigma 30 f1.4,
followed closely by the sigma 16 f1.4
Next is an adapted canon ef-s 60mm f2.8 macro - which is an incredible and very sharp lens.
For some pics the samyung 12mm f 2 is appreciated.
I love my sigma 150-600 for bird pics and the compression, however it is slow to af when adapted with mc11 onto a6300, so challenging for birds in flight.
I have the sony 18-105 f4, but honestly this lens gets left behind most days as the sharpness and micro contrast can just not compare to the sigmas. I do take it sometimes for a walk around, especially in bright conditions where stopping down helps and the zoom is appreciated. I can see how people would love it for video. Would also have been nicer if it had a closer min focusing distance.
If I had only one lens for apsc, then I would propably look at the new sony 16-55 f 2.8 g, especially when price comes down. if it is close to the sigmas, then that would make a very light hiking, travel combo. Fortunately we are not limited to one lens most of the time.

I have this lens and done some videos on a Weebill Lab gimbal. It balanced very well. But now, I prefer to use Crane M2 for lighter traveling bag and this lens is harder to balance, and impossible to balance with ND filter ON. Now I got used ($500) 24mm 1.8 Sony lens (with v02 firmware) and that is perfect for Crane M2. I would say, that 16mm is too wide for general photography. You are right, it makes faces look exploded. 24mm would be a sweet spot. It is wide enough and not too close. Another thing I noticed, not sure it is a lens fault or A6500, but under low light condition, focusing is a heavier task for Sigma lens and it does more hunting, or not focusing at all.

  • @g43654

I have both the 16mm and 56mm. The 16mm rarely gets used because I like portrait shots so 56mm fits quite nicely. I want to get the 30mm as well, however, I think this lens still have issues.

    Good video, BUT...
I am always annoyed by the choppiness of a slow frame rate (24-30) and high shutter speeds with no motion blur as can be seen at 4:19, etc.

Interesting video. Do you not feel that 16mm or 24mm FF equivalent is a particularly unflattering focal length for portrait work? It's generally not the best focal length for women or men.
Would you say that creating more environmental portraiture pushed your decision. I only ask that because of your demonstrative videography.
    Thoughts....

Bought this sigma16 lens after seeing your video 1 year ago. And i am using the similar k&f 2-in-1 filter (Variable ND +CPL). This combination has since always on my A6000. Love your video reviews.

I acutally bought this lens a week ago, and from the kind of shooting that I do on my a6000 (which is mostly portraits/architecture) I found it to be too close of a focal length to get used to, and almost uncomfortable to use for portraits since you are so close. It was fantastically sharp, and for the pictures I did take with it I was happy, but I didn't end up keeping it. Maybe I'll get the 30 1.4 or trade my sony 50 1.8 for the sigma 56.

Arthur, thanks for the great information on lens. I am getting ready to purchase my first sony the 6600 and will be getting the Sigma 16, but I also want a telephoto type lens. Is the 18-200 a viable choice. Thank you for all your hard work. I do know all the work that goes into the videos! Thanks

Used, but for travelling I prefer the 18-105 f/4, It Is my "all in one lens" . In my opinion is the one that do the best job (just photography) on my a6000. Also it has the OSS that I think on the a6000 it's a "must have" . Anyway, nice new production, I've bought 3 of the lens that you reviewed on this channel and never changed them (the adapted Pentax 50mm and the 7art. 25mm). Thank you, you're doing a nice job 😄😉

Hello, thank you for the video. I just recently got the Canon M50 and started with the 30mm 1.4 lens and picked up the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 (28-80mm equivalent) to cover the ranges although it requires an adapter and is probably 100g heavier than the 16mm f.14 which I have on order to test out. I felt the zoom would be a good one lens for travel, environmental portrait, headshot portrait, food, product, events then the 16mm 1.4 and 30mm can be everyday. Now seeing your video, wondering your thoughts on 16 1.4, 17-50, 56 1.4 setup and swap out the 30mm. Do you think there's too much overlap in focal lengths?
Hope to hear your thoughts thanks!

For me my ideal lense would be a as fast as possible telephoto lense! Currently using the Sony SELL 55-210mm most of the time for planespotting. Sometimes I wish there would be a larger lense for under 500 bucks. Cause the 55-210mm gets seriously dark at 210mm using 1/1000s and upwards (which is required to capture aircraft mid flight).

A year ago your video convinced me to get a sony a6000 and with your lens reviews, I decided to buy a sony 35mm f1.8 prime and a sigma 16mm 1.4 lens. Without question, these two lenses do 99% of the work but if I could pick only one, then I'd go with the 35mm f1.8 lens. And btw, I didn't even bother to buy the kit lens, at f4 they're too limiting during those night shots. Prime lenses all day everyday for me.

Thanks Arthur for your review. I am a non native speaker (from the Netherlands). I really like your style of reviewing, speaking in a way not too fast, and without that terrible dialect that many US and UK reviewers have. At the moment I own a Nex 5, still doing the job well. Next year I want to purchase an A 6600 and the Sigma lens. Thanks for your advice.
